Abstract:An unavoidable task in quantum information processing is how to obtain data about the state of an individual system by suitable measurements. Informationally complete measurements are relevant in quantum state tomography, quantum cryptography, quantum cloning, and other questions. Symmetric informationally complete measurements (SIC-POVMs) form an especially important class of such measurements. We formulate some novel properties and relations for general SIC-POVMs in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. For a given density matrix and any general SIC-POVM, the so-called index of coincidence of generated probability distribution is exactly calculated. Using this result, we obtain state-dependent entropic bounds for a single general SIC-POVM. Lower entropic bounds are derived in terms of the Rényi $\alpha$-entropies for $\alpha\in[2;\infty)$ and the Tsallis $\alpha$-entropies for $\alpha\in(0;2]$. A lower bound on the min-entropy of a SIC-POVM is separately examined. For a pair of general SIC-POVMs, entropic uncertainty relations of the Maassen-Uffink type are considered.

Abstract:The notion of SIC-POVMs comes from quantum information theory, and they were not on the horizon when I was Lars Brink's student in the early 80s. In the summer of 2022 I told Lars that I know how to use number theoretical insights to construct SIC-POVMs in any Hilbert space of dimension $n^2+3$, and that the construction provides a geometric setting for some deep number theoretical conjectures. I will give a sketch of this development, of what it was like to be Lars' student, and of what his reaction to our construction was.

Abstract:We reconstruct quantum theory starting from the premise that, as Asher Peres remarked, “Unperformed experiments have no results.” The tools of quantum information theory, and in particular the symmetric informationally complete (SIC) measurements, provide a concise expression of how exactly Peres’s dictum holds true. That expression is a constraint on how the probability distributions for outcomes of different, hypothetical and mutually exclusive experiments ought to mesh together, a type of constraint not foreseen in classical thinking. Taking this as our foundational principle, we show how to reconstruct the formalism of quantum theory in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. The central variety of mathematical entity in our reconstruction is the qplex, a very particular type of subset of a probability simplex. Along the way, by closely studying the symmetry properties of qplexes, we derive a condition for the existence of a d-dimensional SIC.

Abstract:As the title indicates, this chapter presents a brief, self-contained introduction to five fundamental problems in Quantum Information Science (QIS) that are especially well-suited to be formulated as Semi-definite Programs (SDP). We have in mind two audiences. The primary audience comprises of Operations Research (and Computer Science) graduate students who have familiarity with SDPs, but have found it daunting to become even minimally conversant with pre-requisites of QIS. The second audience consists of Physicists (and Electrical Engineers) already knowledgeable with modeling of QIS via SDP but interested in computational tools that are applicable more generally. For both audiences, we strive for rapid access to the unfamiliar material. For the first, we provide just enough required background material (from Quantum Mechanics, treated via matrices, and mapping them in Dirac notation) and simultaneously for the second audience we recreate, computationally in Jupyter notebooks, known closed-form solutions. We hope you will enjoy this introduction and gain understanding of the marvelous connection between SDP and QIS by self-study, or as a short seminar course. Ultimately, we hope this disciplinary outreach will fuel advances in QIS through their fruitful study via SDPs.

Group Theoretic, Lie Algebraic and Jordan Algebraic Formulations of the SIC Existence Problem

Abstract:Although symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SIC POVMs, or SICs for short) have been constructed in every dimension up to 67, a general existence proof remains elusive. The purpose of this paper is to show that the SIC existence problem is equivalent to three other, on the face of it quite different problems. Although it is still not clear whether these reformulations of the problem will make it more tractable, we believe that the fact that SICs have these connections to other areas of mathematics is of some intrinsic interest. Specifically, we reformulate the SIC problem in terms of (1) Lie groups, (2) Lie algebras and (3) Jordan algebras (the second result being a greatly strengthened version of one previously obtained by Appleby, Flammia and Fuchs). The connection between these three reformulations is non-trivial: It is not easy to demonstrate their equivalence directly, without appealing to their common equivalence to SIC existence. In the course of our analysis we obtain a number of other results which may be of some independent interest.

Abstract:This paper looks at the intersection of algorithmic information theory and physics, namely quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and black holes. We discuss theorems which characterize the barrier between the quantum world and the classical realm. The notion of a ``semi-classical subspace'' is introduced. Partial signals and partial information cloning can be obtained on quantum states in semi-classical subspaces. The No Synchronization Law is detailed, which says separate and isolated physical systems evolving over time cannot have algorithmic thermodynamic entropies that are in synch. We look at future work involving the Kolmogorov complexity of black holes.

Abstract:We show that naturally associated to a SIC (symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measure or SIC-POVM) in dimension d there are a number of higher dimensional structures: specifically a projector and a complex Hadamard matrix in dimension d squared and a pair of ETFs (equiangular tight frames) in dimensions d(d-1)/2, d(d+1)/2. We also show that a WH (Weyl Heisenberg covariant) SIC in odd dimension d is naturally associated to a pair of symmetric tight fusion frames in dimension d. We deduce two relaxations of the WH SIC existence problem. We also find a reformulation of the problem in which the number of equations is fewer than the number of variables. Finally, we show that in at least four cases the structures associated to a SIC lie on continuous manifolds of such structures. In two of these cases the manifolds are non-linear. Restricted defect calculations are consistent with this being true for the structures associated to every known SIC with d between 3 and 16, suggesting it may be true for all d greater than 2.

Quantum Signal Processing with the one-dimensional quantum Ising model

Abstract:Quantum Signal Processing (QSP) has emerged as a promising framework to manipulate and determine properties of quantum systems. QSP not only unifies most existing quantum algorithms but also provides tools to discover new ones. Quantum signal processing is applicable to single- or multi-qubit systems that can be qubitized so one can exploit the SU$(2)$ structure of system evolution within special invariant two-dimensional subspaces. In the context of quantum algorithms, this SU$(2)$ structure is artificially imposed on the system through highly nonlocal evolution operators that are difficult to implement on near-term quantum devices. In this work, we propose QSP protocols for the infinite-dimensional Onsager Lie Algebra, which is relevant to the physical dynamics of quantum devices that can simulate the transverse field Ising model. To this end, we consider QSP sequences in the Heisenberg picture, allowing us to exploit the emergent SU$(2)$ structure in momentum space and synthesize QSP sequences for the Onsager algebra. Our results demonstrate a concrete connection between QSP techniques and Noisy Intermediate Scale quantum protocols. We provide examples and applications of our approach in diverse fields ranging from space-time dual quantum circuits and quantum simulation, to quantum control.

SIC-POVMs and the Knaster's Conjecture

Abstract:Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Operator-Valued Measures (SIC-POVMs) have been constructed in many dimensions using the Weyl-Heisenberg group. In the quantum information community, it is commonly believed that SCI-POVMs exist in all dimensions; however, the general proof of their existence is still an open problem. The Bloch sphere representation of SIC-POVMs allows for a general geometric description of the set of operators, where they form the vertices of a regular simplex oriented based on a continuous function. We use this perspective of the SIC-POVMs to prove the Knaster's conjecture for the geometry of SIC-POVMs and prove the existence of a continuous family of generalized SIC-POVMs where $(n^2-1)$ of the matrices have the same value of $Tr(\rho^k)$. Furthermore, by using numerical methods, we show that a regular simplex can be constructed such that all its vertices map to the same value of $Tr(\rho^3)$ on the Bloch sphere of $3$ and $4$ dimensional Hilbert spaces. In the $3$-dimensional Hilbert space, we generate $10^4$ generalized SIC-POVMs for randomly chosen $Tr(\rho^3)$ values such that all the elements are equivalent up to unitary transformations.

Quantum Spin Chains and Symmetric Functions

Abstract:We consider the question of what quantum spin chains naturally encode in their Hilbert space. It turns out that quantum spin chains are rather rich systems, naturally encoding solutions to various problems in combinatorics, group theory, and algebraic geometry. In the case of the XX Heisenberg spin chain these are given by skew Kostka numbers, skew characters of the symmetric group, and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As we show, this is revealed by a fermionic representation of the theory of "quantized" symmetric functions formulated by Fomin and Greene, which provides a powerful framework for constructing operators extracting this data from the Hilbert space of quantum spin chains. Furthermore, these operators are diagonalized by the Bethe basis of the quantum spin chain. Underlying this is the fact that quantum spin chains are examples of "quantum integrable systems." This is somewhat analogous to bosons encoding permanents and fermions encoding determinants. This points towards considering quantum integrable systems, and the combinatorics associated with them, as potentially interesting targets for quantum computers.

Abstract:Attention to the very physical aspects of information characterizes the current research in quantum computation, quantum cryptography and quantum communication. In most of the cases quantum description of the system provides advantages over the classical approach. Game theory, the study of decision making in conflict situation has already been extended to the quantum domain. We would like to review the latest development in quantum game theory that is relevant to information processing. We will begin by illustrating the general idea of a quantum game and methods of gaining an advantage over "classical opponent". Then we review the most important game theoretical aspects of quantum information processing. On grounds of the discussed material, we reason about possible future development of quantum game theory and its impact on information processing and the emerging information society. The idea of quantum artificial intelligence is explained.

Abstract:In the standard basis exact expressions for the components of SIC vectors (belonging to a symmetric informationally complete POVM) are typically very complicated. We show that a simple transformation to a basis adapted to the symmetries of a fiducial SIC vector can result in a massive reduction in complexity. We rely on a conjectural number theoretic connection between SICs in dimension $d_j$ and SICs in dimension $d_{j+1} = d_j(d_j-2)$. We focus on the sequence 5, 15, 195, ... . We rewrite Zauner's exact solution for the SIC in dimension 5 to make its simplicity manifest, and use our adapted basis to convert numerical solutions in dimensions 15 and 195 to exact solutions. Comparing to the known exact solutions in dimension 15 we find that the simplification achieved is dramatic. The proof that the exact vectors are indeed SIC fiducial vectors, also in dimension 195, is a long calculation guided by the standard ray class hypothesis about the algebraic number fields generated by the SICs. We conjecture that our result generalizes to every dimension in the particular sequence we consider.

Abstract:We present here various techniques to work with clean and disordered quantum Ising chains, for the benefit of students and non-experts. Starting from the Jordan-Wigner transformation, which maps spin-1/2 systems into fermionic ones, we review some of the basic approaches to deal with the superconducting correlations that naturally emerge in this context. In particular, we analyse the form of the ground state and excitations of the model, relating them to the symmetry-breaking physics, and illustrate aspects connected to calculating dynamical quantities, thermal averages, correlation functions and entanglement entropy. A few problems provide simple applications of the techniques.

Abstract:Quantum information theory is a new interdisciplinary research field related to quantum mechanics, computer science, information theory, and applied mathematics. It provides completely new paradigms to do information processing tasks by employing the principles of quantum mechanics. In this review, we first survey some of the significant advances in quantum information theory in the last twenty years. We then focus mainly on two special subjects: discrimination of quantum objects and transformations between entanglements. More specifically, we first discuss discrimination of quantum states and quantum apparatus in both global and local settings. Secondly, we present systematical characterizations and equivalence relations of several interesting entanglement transformation phenomena, namely entanglement catalysis, multiple-copy entanglement transformation, and partial entanglement recovery.

Non-onsite symmetries and quantum teleportation in split-index matrix product states

Abstract:We describe a class of spin chains with new physical and computational properties. On the physical side, the spin chains give examples of symmetry-protected topological phases that are defined by non-onsite symmetries, i.e. symmetries that are not a tensor product of single-site operators. These phases can be detected by string-order parameters, but notably do not exhibit entanglement spectrum degeneracy. On the computational side, the spin chains represent a new class of states that can be used to deterministically teleport information across long distances, with the novel property that the necessary classical side processing is a non-linear function of the measurement outcomes. We also give examples of states that can serve as universal resources for measurement-based quantum computation, providing the first examples of such resources without entanglement spectrum degeneracy. The key tool in our analysis is a new kind of tensor network representation which we call split-index matrix product states (SIMPS). We develop the basic formalism of SIMPS, compare them to matrix product states, show how they are better equipped to describe certain kinds of non-onsite symmetries including anomalous symmetries, and discuss how they are also well-suited to describing quantum teleportation and constrained spin chains.

Quantum Subspace Correction for Constraints

Abstract:We demonstrate that it is possible to construct operators that stabilize the constraint-satisfying subspaces of computational problems in their Ising representations. We provide an explicit recipe to construct unitaries and associated measurements given a set of constraints. The stabilizer measurements allow the detection of constraint violations, and provide a route to recovery back into the constrained subspace. We call this technique ''quantum subspace correction". As an example, we explicitly investigate the stabilizers using the simplest local constraint subspace: Independent Set. We find an algorithm that is guaranteed to produce a perfect uniform or weighted distribution over all constraint-satisfying states when paired with a stopping condition: a quantum analogue of partial rejection sampling. The stopping condition can be modified for sub-graph approximations. We show that it can prepare exact Gibbs distributions on $d-$regular graphs below a critical hardness $\lambda_d^*$ in sub-linear time. Finally, we look at a potential use of quantum subspace correction for fault-tolerant depth-reduction. In particular we investigate how the technique detects and recovers errors induced by Trotterization in preparing maximum independent set using an adiabatic state preparation algorithm.
