Abstract:In the last 25 years a new understanding has evolved of the role of information in quantum mechanics. At the same time there has been tremendous progress in atomic/optical physics and condensed matter physics, and particularly at the interface between these two formerly distinct fields, in developing experimental systems whose quantum states are long-lived and which can be engineered to perform quantum information processing tasks. These lecture notes will present a brief introduction to the basic theoretical concepts behind this `second quantum revolution.' These notes will also provide an introduction to `circuit QED.' In addition to being a novel test bed for non-linear quantum optics of microwave electrical circuits which use superconducting qubits as artificial atoms, circuit QED offers an architecture for constructing quantum information processors.

Abstract:This chapter briefly describes the basic concepts and principles of quantum computing. Firstly, the concepts of qubit, quantum coherence, quantum decoherence, quantum entanglement, quantum density operators, linear operators, inner products, outer products, tensor products, Hermite operators, and unitary operators are described. Then, the four basic assumptions of quantum mechanics are introduced, focusing on the measurement assumptions of quantum mechanics. Finally, the definition of commonly used quantum logic gates is given including single qubit gates, double qubit gates, and multiple qubit gates. These contents provide the necessary theoretical basis for subsequent chapters.

Abstract:Basic concepts of quantum theory of information, principles of quantum calculations and the possibility of creation on this basis unique on calculation power and functioning principle device, named quantum computer, are briefly reviewed. The main blocks of quantum logic, schemes of implementation of quantum calculations, as well as some known today effective quantum algorithms, called to realize advantages of quantum calculations upon classical, are concerned. Among them special place is taken by Shor's algorithm of number factorization, Grover's algorithm of unsorted database search and, finally, the most promising in application methods of quantum phenomena simulation, particularly quantum chaos. The most perspective methods of experimental realization of quantum computer, namely nuclear-magnetic resonance and trapped ions realizations, are discussed. Phenomena of decoherence, its influence on quantum computer stability and methods of quantum error correction are described.

Abstract:Quantum Computing is a technology, which promises to overcome the drawbacks of conventional CMOS technology for high density and high performance applications. Its potential to revolutionize today's computing world is attracting more and more researchers towards this field. However, due to the involvement of quantum properties, many beginners find it difficult to follow the field. Therefore, in this research note an effort has been made to introduce the various aspects of quantum computing to researchers, quantum engineers and scientists. The historical background and basic concepts necessary to understand quantum computation and information processing have been introduced in a lucid manner. Various physical implementations and potential application areas of quantum computation have also been discussed in this paper. Recent developments in each realization, in the context of the DiVincenzo criteria, including ion traps based quantum computing, superconducting quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computing, spintronics and semiconductor based quantum computing have been discussed.

Abstract:These are the lecture notes of the master's course "Quantum Computing", taught at Chalmers University of Technology every fall since 2020, with participation of students from RWTH Aachen and Delft University of Technology. The aim of this course is to provide a theoretical overview of quantum computing, excluding specific hardware implementations. Topics covered in these notes include quantum algorithms (such as Grover's algorithm, the quantum Fourier transform, phase estimation, and Shor's algorithm), variational quantum algorithms that utilise an interplay between classical and quantum computers [such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the quantum approximate optimisation algorithm (QAOA), among others], quantum error correction, various versions of quantum computing (such as measurement-based quantum computation, adiabatic quantum computation, and the continuous-variable approach to quantum information), the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning, and quantum complexity theory. Lectures on these topics are compiled into 12 chapters, most of which contain a few suggested exercises at the end, and interspersed with four tutorials, which provide practical exercises as well as further details. At Chalmers, the course is taught in seven weeks, with three two-hour lectures or tutorials per week. It is recommended that the students taking the course have some previous experience with quantum physics, but not strictly necessary.

Abstract:Recent developments in quantum computation have made it clear that there is a lot more to computation than the conventional Boolean algebra. Is quantum computation the most general framework for processing information? Having gathered the courage to go beyond the traditional definitions, we are now in a position to answer: Certainly not. The meaning of a message being ``a collection of building blocks'' can be explored in a variety of situations. A generalised framework is proposed based on group theory, and it is illustrated with well-known physical examples. A systematic information theoretical approach is yet to be developed in many of these situations. Some directions for future development are pointed out.

Abstract:Quantum Computing observed a significant rise to public and technologies in past three decades, the reason behind for the development of quantum computing is to solve various problems which are so complex that traditional (classical) computers were not able to solve. New technologies, hardware components and software advancements are being discovered all around the world in order to use this powerful tool. But in addition to the development of technologies and the attempt to scale up the quantum computers, new challenges and problems too came in light which makes it tough for further progress in the quest to unlock the true development of quantum computers. Various methods has been identified for Quantum Information Processing (QIP), but the error rates were more than what we would expect often resulting in inappropriate computations which eventually gives inaccurate conclusions.In this work, we discuss about the prominent hardware and software methods to build the quantum computers with low error rates and better accuracy, we will look onto the topics related to qubits and its principles which are incorporated in Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) which govern the working of quantum computers, the topics of quantum algorithms and its methodology are also been discussed to provide a clear understanding of the manipulation of qubits according to the purpose needed. In addition to that we will talk about the applications like quantum teleportation and cryptography which utilizes the quantum computers, and discuss about the future enhancements which can be done using this technology.

Abstract:We examine information loss, resource costs, and run time from practical application of quantum data compression. Compressing quantum data to fewer qubits enables efficient use of resources, as well as applications for quantum communication and denoising. In this context, we provide a description of the quantum and classical components of the hybrid quantum autoencoder algorithm, implemented using IBM's Qiskit language. Utilizing our own data sets, we encode bitmap images as quantum superposition states, which correspond to linearly independent vectors with density matrices of discrete values. We successfully compress this data with near-lossless compression using simulation, and then run our algorithm on an IBMQ quantum chip. We describe conditions and run times for training and compressing our data on quantum devices, and relate trainability to specific characteristics and performance metrics of our parametric quantum circuits.

Abstract:Attention to the very physical aspects of information characterizes the current research in quantum computation, quantum cryptography and quantum communication. In most of the cases quantum description of the system provides advantages over the classical approach. Game theory, the study of decision making in conflict situation has already been extended to the quantum domain. We would like to review the latest development in quantum game theory that is relevant to information processing. We will begin by illustrating the general idea of a quantum game and methods of gaining an advantage over "classical opponent". Then we review the most important game theoretical aspects of quantum information processing. On grounds of the discussed material, we reason about possible future development of quantum game theory and its impact on information processing and the emerging information society. The idea of quantum artificial intelligence is explained.

Abstract:Since the introduction of quantum mechanics, it has been taught mostly as a theoretical subject. It is also viewed as a theory that provides a best understanding of the nature, but which does not have much practical applications in our day to day life. This notion has been considerably changed in the recent past with the advent of quantum information processing. Further, recently, IBM has introduced a set of quantum computers that are placed in the cloud and can be accessed freely from your class room though your mobile phones, PCs, Laptops having an internet connection. In this article, we will show that the IBM quantum computer can be used to demonstrate many fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics, quantum computing and communication.

Abstract:Quantum information science strives to leverage the quantum-mechanical nature of our universe in order to achieve large improvements in certain information processing tasks. In deep-space optical communications, current receivers for the pure-state classical-quantum channel first measure each qubit channel output and then classically post-process the measurements. This approach is sub-optimal. In this dissertation we investigate a recently proposed quantum algorithm for this task, which is inspired by classical belief-propagation algorithms, and analyze its performance on a simple $5$-bit code. We show that the algorithm is optimal for each bit and it appears to achieve optimal performance when deciding the full transmitted message. We also provide explicit circuits for the algorithm in terms of standard gates. This suggests a near-term quantum communication advantage over the aforementioned sub-optimal scheme. Quantum error correction is vital to building a universal fault-tolerant quantum computer. We propose an efficient algorithm that can translate a given logical Clifford operation on a stabilizer code into all (equivalence classes of) physical Clifford circuits that realize that operation. In order to achieve universality, one also needs to implement at least one non-Clifford logical operation. So, we develop a mathematical framework for a large subset of diagonal operations in the Clifford hierarchy, which we call Quadratic Form Diagonal (QFD) gates. Then we use the QFD formalism to characterize all stabilizer codes whose code spaces are preserved under the transversal action of the non-Clifford $T$ gates on the physical qubits. We also discuss a few purely-classical coding problems motivated by transversal $T$ gates. A conscious effort has been made to keep this dissertation self-contained, by including necessary background material on quantum information and computation.

Abstract:In this note is touched upon an application of quantum information science (QIS) in nanotechnology area. The laws of quantum mechanics may be very important for nano-scale objects. A problem with simulating of quantum systems is well known and quantum computer was initially suggested by R. Feynman just as the way to overcome such difficulties. Mathematical methods developed in QIS also may be applied for description of nano-devices. Few illustrative examples are mentioned and they may be related with so-called fourth generation of nanotechnology products.

Abstract:Quantum Computing is a new and exciting field at the intersection of mathematics, computer science and physics. It concerns a utilization of quantum mechanics to improve the efficiency of computation. Here we present a gentle introduction to some of the ideas in quantum computing. The paper begins by motivating the central ideas of quantum mechanics and quantum computation with simple toy models. From there we move on to a formal presentation of the small fraction of (finite dimensional) quantum mechanics that we will need for basic quantum computation. Central notions of quantum architecture (qubits and quantum gates) are described. The paper ends with a presentation of one of the simplest quantum algorithms: Deutsch's algorithm. Our presentation demands neither advanced mathematics nor advanced physics.
