Abstract:We study the three-dimensional $SU(2)$ principal chiral model (PCM) using different tensor renormalization group methods based on the triad and anisotropic decomposition of the tensor. The tensor network representation is formulated based on the character expansion of the Boltzmann weight. We compare the average action obtained using these two tensor network algorithms and confirm that the resulting critical coupling and exponent are comparable with the recent estimations from the Monte Carlo methods.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the three - dimensional \(SU(2)\) Principal Chiral Model (PCM) by using different tensor renormalization group methods (tensor network algorithms based on triplet and anisotropic decomposition). Specifically, the author aims to compare the performance of these tensor network algorithms in dealing with the non - trivial \(SU(2)\) Principal Chiral Model and verify whether their results on critical coupling and exponents are consistent with the latest estimates of the Monte Carlo method. ### Research Background - **Tensor Network Methods**: Tensor network methods have the ability to handle large - volume systems. Especially in the presence of translational symmetry, they can handle exponentially large lattice sizes in polynomial time. Moreover, tensor network methods do not have a sign problem, so they are not affected by negative or imaginary weights. - **High - Dimensional Expansion**: Although tensor network methods are very mature in two - dimensional Euclidean space, their application in three - and four - dimensional spaces still faces challenges, mainly because of the poor spatio - temporal dimensional scalability of the algorithms. ### Research Model - **\(SU(2)\) Principal Chiral Model**: This model is a non - linear \(\sigma\) - model, which can be regarded as an effective theory of two - flavor quark high - temperature quantum chromodynamics and an effective theory of high - temperature strongly - coupled four - dimensional \(SU(2)\) gauge theory. - **Model Characteristics**: This model has a certain universality and shares some common features with other physically interesting models. At the same time, this model can be verified by numerical methods or analytical means. ### Tensor Representation - **Continuous - to - Discrete Conversion**: By expanding the nearest - neighbor Boltzmann weights into characters of the irreducible representations (irreps.) of the \(SU(2)\) group, the continuous matrix variables can be transformed into discrete degrees of freedom. - **Local Tensor Construction**: By integrating the original matrix variables, a local tensor can be constructed, which is the same at each position of the lattice. ### Algorithm Comparison - **Triplet TRG (tTRG)**: The initial tensor is decomposed into four smaller tensors and updated using the Higher - Order Tensor Renormalization Group (HOTRG) algorithm. - **Anisotropic TRG (ATRG)**: The initial tensor is decomposed into two parts, and the upper and lower parts of adjacent tensors are exchanged by Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to realize the iterative algorithm. ### Observables and Results - **Free Energy Density**: The free energy density can be obtained by calculating the logarithm of the partition function. - **Average Action and Its Susceptibility**: The average action and its susceptibility can be calculated by the derivative of the free energy density. - **Observable \(X\)**: A quantity \(X\) can be defined by calculating a specific combination of tensors, which is used to identify the phase transition point without explicitly calculating the derivative. ### Conclusions - **Algorithm Performance**: The research shows that both tTRG and ATRG can effectively identify the phase transition point, but ATRG is more accurate at a fixed bond dimension and also has a higher computational cost. - **Phase Transition Properties**: Through the calculation of \(X\), it is proved for the first time that the phase transition in the continuous symmetry model can be identified in a similar way, which indicates that the phase transition may be related to \(Z_2\) symmetry. ### Future Work - **Further Research**: Calculate \(\langle \text{Tr}[U] \rangle\) and its susceptibility, and study the \(SU(3)\) Principal Chiral Model to increase the complexity of the model and explore the character expansion of the \(SU(3)\) group, which is crucial for subsequent research on quantum chromodynamics.
