Abstract:Signal reconstruction through software processing is a crucial component of the background and signal models in the PandaX-4T experiment, which is a multi-tonne dark matter direct search experiment. The accuracy of signal reconstruction is influenced by various detector artifacts, including noise, dark count of photomultiplier, impurity photoionization in the detector, and other relevant considerations. In this study, we present a detailed description of a semi-data-driven approach designed to simulate the signal waveform. This work provides a reliable model for the efficiency and bias of the signal reconstruction in the data analysis of PandaX-4T. By comparing critical variables which relate to the temporal shape and hit pattern of the signals, we demonstrate a good agreement between the simulation and data.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the accuracy of signal reconstruction in the PandaX - 4T experiment. PandaX - 4T is a multi - ton - level direct dark matter detection experiment, and the construction of its background and signal models highly depends on signal reconstruction through software processing. However, the accuracy of signal reconstruction is affected by multiple factors, such as noise, dark counts of photomultiplier tubes, impurity photo - ionization in the detector, etc. Therefore, this paper proposes a semi - data - driven method to simulate signal waveforms, aiming to provide a reliable model for evaluating the efficiency and deviation of signal reconstruction in data analysis. Specifically, the paper solves the problem through the following aspects: 1. **Simulation of S1 and S2 Pulses**: - **S1 Pulse**: The S1 signal represents the instantaneous scintillation signal generated by the interaction of particles with xenon shell electrons or nuclei in the TPC detector. The paper adopts a data - driven method, using 220Rn and neutron calibration data (including 241AmBe radioactive sources and deuterium - deuterium neutron generators) to simulate the S1 waveforms of ER and NR events. - **S2 Pulse**: The S2 signal corresponds to the proportional scintillation light generated when the drift electrons reach the gaseous xenon layer of the TPC detector. The shape of the S2 pulse is mainly determined by the longitudinal diffusion of electrons and their propagation in the gaseous layer. The paper determines the propagation time profile of electrons in gaseous xenon by analyzing single - electron waveforms and uses 83mKr calibration data to determine the longitudinal diffusion coefficient. 2. **Simulation of Noise and Dark Counts**: - The paper considers the masking effect of noise and photomultiplier tube dark counts on small S1 signals and the possible mis - pairing resulting therefrom. By superimposing actual segmented waveforms onto the simulated waveforms, these noise and dark counts are incorporated into the simulation framework. 3. **PMT After - Pulses**: - When the PMT detects an optical signal, impurities remaining in the PMT may be ionized due to the acceleration of photoelectrons, resulting in an additional small - delay signal. The paper simulates this process by sampling the average differential probability and average charge of PMT after - pulses. 4. **Photo - Ionization and Delayed Electrons**: - The paper also simulates the delayed S2 signals caused by factors such as electrode photo - ionization, impurity photo - ionization uniformly distributed in the detector, and electron capture at the liquid - gas interface. By stacking selected S2 waveforms and analyzing the stacked waveforms, the probability of delayed electron generation is modeled. 5. **Comparison with Experimental Data**: - To verify the validity of the simulation framework, the paper shows good consistency between the simulation results and the experimental data by comparing the distributions of key variables (such as signal width, pattern, charge, etc.). These key variables include the shapes, patterns of S1 and S2 pulses, and the "dirtiness" of the waveforms. In summary, through the development and verification of a semi - data - driven waveform simulation framework, this paper aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of signal reconstruction in the PandaX - 4T experiment, thereby enhancing the background suppression ability for direct dark matter detection.
