Abstract:Abstract We prove the existence of small amplitude, time-quasi-periodic solutions (invariant tori) for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation on the d -dimensional torus $$\mathbb T^d$$ T d , with a small, quasi-periodic in time external force. We also show that they are orbitally and asymptotically stable in $$H^s$$ H s (for s large enough). More precisely, for any initial datum which is close to the invariant torus, there exists a unique global in time solution which stays close to the invariant torus for all times. Moreover, the solution converges asymptotically to the invariant torus for $$t \rightarrow + \infty $$ t → + ∞ , with an exponential rate of convergence $$O( e^{- \alpha t })$$ O ( e - α t ) for any arbitrary $$\alpha \in (0, 1)$$ α ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) .

Abstract: This paper concerns with the time periodic viscosity solution problem for a class of evolutionary contact Hamilton-Jacobi equations with time independent Hamiltonians on the torus $\mathbb{T}^n$. Under certain suitable assumptions we show that the equation has a non-trivial $T$-periodic viscosity solution if and only if $T\in D$, where $D$ is a dense subset of $[0,+\infty)$. Moreover, we clarify the structure of $D$. As a consequence, we also study the existence of Bohr almost periodic viscosity solutions.

In this setting, we prove the existence of a family of non-trivially smooth time-periodic solutions at an arbitrarily small distance from the stationary Taylor-Couette flow in $H^s$, with $s<3/2$, at the vorticity level.

Abstract:We consider the incompressible Euler or Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a torus T^d in the functional setting of the Sobolev spaces H^n(T^d) of divergence free, zero mean vector fields on T^d, for n > d/2+1. We present a general theory of approximate solutions for the Euler/NS Cauchy problem; this allows to infer a lower bound T_c on the time of existence of the exact solution u analyzing a posteriori any approximate solution u_a, and also to construct a function R_n such that || u(t) - u_a(t) ||_n <= R_n(t) for all t in [0,T_c). Both T_c and R_n are determined solving suitable "control inequalities", depending on the error of u_a; the fully quantitative implementation of this scheme depends on some previous estimates of ours on the Euler/NS quadratic nonlinearity [15][16]. To keep in touch with the existing literature on the subject, our results are compared with a setting for approximate Euler/NS solutions proposed in [3]. As a first application of the present framework, we consider the Galerkin approximate solutions of the Euler/NS Cauchy problem, with a specific initial datum considered in [2]: in this case our methods allow, amongst else, to prove global existence for the NS Cauchy problem when the viscosity is above an explicitly given bound.

Abstract:Let us consider the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations with the time-periodic external forces in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 2$ and investigate the existence and non-existence of time-periodic solutions. In the higher dimensional case $n \geq 3$, we construct a unique small solution for given small time-periodic force in the scaling critical spaces of Besov type and prove its stability under small perturbations. In contrast, for the two-dimensional case $n=2$, the time-periodic solvability of the Navier--Stokes equations has been long standing open. It is the central work of this paper that we have now succeeded in solving this issue negatively by providing examples of small external forces such that each of them does not generate time-periodic solutions.

Isolated steady solutions of the 3D Euler equations

Abstract:We show that there exist closed three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds where the incompressible Euler equations exhibit smooth steady solutions that are isolated in the $C^1$-topology. The proof of this fact combines ideas from dynamical systems, which appear naturally because these isolated states have strongly chaotic dynamics, with techniques from spectral geometry and contact topology, which can be effectively used to analyze the steady Euler equations on carefully chosen Riemannian manifolds. Interestingly, much of this strategy carries over to the Euler equations in Euclidean space, leading to the weaker result that there exist analytic steady solutions on $\mathbf{T}^3$ such that the only analytic steady Euler flows in a $C^1$-neighborhood must belong to a certain linear space of dimension six. For comparison, note that in any $C^k$-neighborhood of a shear flow there are infinitely many linearly independent analytic shears.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to establish a blow-up mechanism for the forced 3D incompressible Euler equations, with a specific focus on non-axisymmetric solutions. We construct solutions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ within the function space $C^{3,\frac12}\cap L^2$ for the time interval $[0, T)$, where $T > 0$ is finite, subject to a uniform force in $C^{1,\frac12 -\epsilon}\cap L^2$. Remarkably, our methodology results in a blow-up: as the time $t$ approaches the blow-up moment $T$, the integral $\int_0^t |\nabla u| ds$ tends to infinity, all while preserving the solution's smoothness throughout, except at the origin. In the process of our blow-up construction, self-similar coordinates are not utilized and we are able to treat solutions beyond the $C^{1,\frac13+}$ threshold regularity of axy-symmetric solutions without swirl.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the existence of solutions to the quantum Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}^d$, $d\geqslant 2$, with almost constant mass density, displaying energy transfers to high Fourier modes and polynomially fast-in-time growth of Sobolev norms above the finite-energy level. These solutions are uniformly far from vacuum, suggesting that weak turbulence in quantum hydrodynamics is not necessarily related to the occurrence of vortex structures. In view of possible connections with instability mechanisms for the classical compressible Euler equations, we also keep track of the dependence on the semiclassical parameter, showing that, at high regularity, the time at which the Sobolev norm inflations occur is uniform when approaching the semiclassical limit. Our construction relies on a novel result of Sobolev instability for the plane waves of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS), which is connected to the quantum Euler equations through the Madelung transform}. More precisely, we show the existence of smooth solutions to NLS, which are small-amplitude perturbations of a plane wave and undergo a polynomially fast $H^s$-norm inflation for $s>1$. The proof is based on a partial Birkhoff normal form procedure, involving the normalization of non-homogeneous Hamiltonian terms.

Abstract:We prove an extension theorem for local solutions of the 3d incompressible Euler equations. More precisely, we show that if a smooth vector field satisfies the Euler equations in a spacetime region $\Omega\times(0,T)$, one can choose an admissible weak solution on $\mathbf R^3\times (0,T)$ of class $C^\beta$ for any $\beta<1/3$ such that both fields coincide on $\Omega\times (0,T)$. Moreover, one controls the spatial support of the global solution. Our proof makes use of a new extension theorem for local subsolutions of the incompressible Euler equations and a $C^{1/3}$ convex integration scheme implemented in the context of weak solutions with compact support in space. We present two nontrivial applications of these ideas. First, we construct infinitely many admissible weak solutions of class $C^\beta_{\text{loc}}$ with the same vortex sheet initial data, which coincide with it at each time $t$ outside a turbulent region of width $O(t)$. Second, given any smooth solution $v$ of the Euler equation on $\mathbf T^3\times(0,T)$ and any open set $U \subset \mathbf T^3$, we construct admissible weak solutions which coincide with $v$ outside $U$ and are uniformly close to it everywhere at time 0, yet blow up dramatically on a subset of $U\times (0,T)$ of full Hausdorff dimension. These solutions are of class $C^\beta$ outside their singular set.

Abstract:We consider the three-dimensional Euler equations in a domain with a free boundary with no surface tension. We construct unique local-in-time solutions in the Lagrangian setting for $u_0 \in H^{2.5+\delta }$ such that the Rayleigh-Taylor condition holds and $\mathrm{curl}\,u_0 \in H^{2+\delta }$ in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the free boundary. We show that the result is optimal in the sense that $H^{3+\delta}$ regularity of the Lagrangian deformation near the free boundary can be ensured if and only if initial vorticity has $H^{2+\delta}$ regularity of vorticity near the free boundary.

Abstract:We study the convergence to equilibrium for the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations on the torus T3. Under the conditions that both the density ρ and the temperature θ possess uniform in time positive lower and upper bounds, it is shown that global regular solutions converge to equilibrium with exponential rate. We improve the previous result obtained by Villani in (2009) [28] on two levels: weaker conditions on solutions and faster decay rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we perform a careful numerical study of nearly singular solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations with smooth initial data. We consider the interaction of two perturbed antiparallel vortex tubes which was previously investigated by Kerr in [16, 19]. In our numerical study, we use both the pseudo-spectral method with the 2/3 dealiasing rule and the pseudo-spectral method with a high order Fourier smoothing. Moreover, we perform a careful resolution study with grid points as large as 1,536 × 1,024 × 3,072 to demonstrate the convergence of both numerical methods. Our computational results show that the maximum vorticity does not grow faster than doubly exponential in time while the velocity field remains bounded up to T = 19, beyond the singularity time T = 18.7 reported by Kerr in [16, 19]. The local geometric regularity of vortex lines near the region of maximum vorticity seems to play an important role in depleting the nonlinear vortex stretching dynamically.

Abstract:We consider the problem of finding a solution to the incompressible Euler equations $$ \omega_t + v\cdot \nabla \omega = 0 \quad \hbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,\infty), \quad v(x,t) = \frac 1{2\pi} \int_{{\mathbb R}^2} \frac {(y-x)^\perp}{|y-x|^2} \omega (y,t)\, dy $$ that is close to a superposition of traveling vortices as $t\to \infty$. We employ a constructive approach by gluing classical traveling waves: two vortex-antivortex pairs traveling at main order with constant speed in opposite directions.
