Abstract:Abstract We prove the existence of small amplitude, time-quasi-periodic solutions (invariant tori) for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation on the d -dimensional torus $$\mathbb T^d$$ T d , with a small, quasi-periodic in time external force. We also show that they are orbitally and asymptotically stable in $$H^s$$ H s (for s large enough). More precisely, for any initial datum which is close to the invariant torus, there exists a unique global in time solution which stays close to the invariant torus for all times. Moreover, the solution converges asymptotically to the invariant torus for $$t \rightarrow + \infty $$ t → + ∞ , with an exponential rate of convergence $$O( e^{- \alpha t })$$ O ( e - α t ) for any arbitrary $$\alpha \in (0, 1)$$ α ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) .

Abstract:It is not yet known if the global attractor of the space-periodic 2D Navier-Stokes equations contains non-stationary solutions u(x, t) such that their energy and enstrophy per unit mass are constant for every t is an element of (-infinity, infinity). The study of the properties of such solutions was initiated in [6], where, because of the hypothetical existence of such solutions, they were called "ghost solutions." In this work, we introduce and study geometric structures shared by all ghost solutions. This study leads us to consider a subclass of ghost solutions for which those geometric structures have a supplementary stability property. In particular, we show that the wave vectors of the active modes of this subclass of ghost solutions must satisfy certain supplementary constraints. We also discover a computational way to check for the existence of these ghost solutions.

Abstract:Stationary or self similar solutions with suitable homogeneity often play a crucial role in the regularity theory of nonlinear problems, which are physically or geometrically interesting. This has been manifested in the regularity theory of harmonic maps and minimal surfaces. The local partial regularity theorem in [CKN] implies that there are no self-similar solutions with small local energy (also see [TX] for generalizations). Making use of some arguments in [NRS], Tsai has ruled out the existence of any self-similar solutions with a finite local energy. Yet it is unclear whether or not solutions of the incompressible Navier– Stokes equation in three space dimensions would develop singularities in finite time. Therefore, it may be still interesting to construct special solutions of the 3-dimensional Navier–Stokes equation. In this note, we construct a one-parameter family of explicit smooth solutions of the 3-dimensional impressible Navier–Stokes equation on R\p, where p is any given point. Abstract:We consider the 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) on torus where the viscosity exponent can be larger than the Lions exponent 5/4. For arbitrarily prescribed divergence-free initial data in $L^{2}_x$, we construct infinitely many probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions in the class $L^{r}_{\Omega}L_{t}^{\gamma}W_{x}^{s,p}$, where $r\geq1$ and $(s, \gamma, p)$ lie in two supercritical regimes with respect to the Ladyžhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin (LPS) <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://criteria.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> shows that even in the high viscosity regime beyond the Lions exponent, though solutions are unique in the Leray-Hopf class, the uniqueness fails in the mixed Lebesgue spaces and, actually, there exist infinitely manly non-Leray-Hopf solutions which can be very close to the Leray-Hopf solutions. Furthermore, we prove the vanishing noise limit result, which relates together the stochastic solutions and the deterministic solutions constructed by Buckmaster-Vicol [4] and the recent work [23].

Abstract:Abstract This paper is concerned with the stationary Navier–Stokes equation in two-dimensional exterior domains with external forces and inhomogeneous boundary conditions, and shows the existence of weak solutions. This solution enjoys a new energy inequality, provided the total flux is bounded by an absolute constant. It is also shown that, under the symmetry condition, the weak solutions tend to 0 at infinity. This paper also provides two criteria for the uniqueness of weak solutions under the assumption on the existence of one small solution which vanishes at infinity. In these criteria the aforementioned energy inequality plays a crucial role.

On the existence and structures of almost axisymmetric solutions to 3-D Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:In this paper, we consider 3-D Navier-Stokes equations with almost axisymmetric initial data, which means that by writing $u_0 =u^r_0 e_r+u^\theta_0 e_\theta+u^z_0 e_z$ in the cylindrical coordinates, then $\partial_\theta u^r_0,\,\partial_\theta u^\theta_0$ and $\partial_\theta u^z_0$ are small in some sense (recall axisymmetric means these three quantities vanish). Then with additional smallness assumption on $u^\theta_0$, we prove the global existence of a unique strong solution $u$, and this solution keeps close to some axisymmetric vector field. We also establish some refined estimates for the integral average in $\theta$ variable for $u$. Moreover, as $u^r_0,\,u^\theta_0$ and $u^z_0$ here depend on $\theta$, it is natural to expand them into Fourier series in $\theta$ variable. And we shall consider one special form of $u_0$, with some small parameter $\varepsilon$ to measure its swirl part and oscillating part. We study the asymptotic expansion of the corresponding solution, and the influences between different profiles in the asymptotic expansion. In particular, we give some special symmetric structures that will persist for all time. These phenomena reflect some features of the nonlinear terms in Navier-Stokes equations.

Isolated steady solutions of the 3D Euler equations

Abstract:We show that there exist closed three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds where the incompressible Euler equations exhibit smooth steady solutions that are isolated in the $C^1$-topology. The proof of this fact combines ideas from dynamical systems, which appear naturally because these isolated states have strongly chaotic dynamics, with techniques from spectral geometry and contact topology, which can be effectively used to analyze the steady Euler equations on carefully chosen Riemannian manifolds. Interestingly, much of this strategy carries over to the Euler equations in Euclidean space, leading to the weaker result that there exist analytic steady solutions on $\mathbf{T}^3$ such that the only analytic steady Euler flows in a $C^1$-neighborhood must belong to a certain linear space of dimension six. For comparison, note that in any $C^k$-neighborhood of a shear flow there are infinitely many linearly independent analytic shears.

Rigidity of Steady Solutions to the Navier-Stokes Equations in High Dimensions and its applications

Abstract:Solutions with scaling-invariant bounds such as self-similar solutions, play an important role in the understanding of the regularity and asymptotic structures of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper, we prove that any steady solution satisfying $|\Bu(x)|\leq C/|x|$ for any constant $C$ in $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus \{0\}$ with $ n \geq 4$, must be zero. Our main idea is to analyze the velocity field and the total head pressure via weighted energy estimates with suitable multipliers so that the proof is pretty elementary and short. These results not only give the Liouville-type theorem for steady solutions in higher dimensions with neither smallness nor self-similarity type assumptions, but also help to remove a class of singularities of solutions and give the optimal asymptotic behaviors of solutions at infinity in the exterior domains.

Almost-everywhere uniqueness of Lagrangian trajectories for $3$D Navier--Stokes revisited

Abstract:We show that, for any Leray solution $u$ to the $3$D Navier--Stokes equations with $u_0\in L^2$, the associated Lagrangian trajectories are unique for Lebesgue a.e. initial condition. Additionally, if $u_0\in H^{1/2}$, then pathwise uniqueness is established for the stochastic Lagrangian trajectories starting from every initial condition. The result sharpens and extends the original one by Robinson and Sadowski (Nonlinearity 2009) and is based on rather different techniques. A key role is played by a newly established asymmetric Lusin--Lipschitz property of Leray solutions $u$, in the framework of (random) Regular Lagrangian flows.

Abstract:We study the stationary Navier–Stokes equations in the whole plane with a compactly supported force term and with a prescribed constant spatial limit. Prior to this work, existence of solutions to this problem was only known under special symmetry and smallness assumptions. In the paper we solve the key difficulties in applying Leray’s invading domains method and, as a consequence, prove the existence of D-solutions in the whole plane for arbitrary compactly supported force. The boundary condition at infinity are verified in two different scenarios: (I) the limiting velocity is sufficiently large with respect to the external force, (II) both the total integral of force and the limiting velocity vanish. Hence, our method produces large class of new solutions with prescribed spatial limits. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of D-solutions to this problem in a perturbative regime. The main tools here are two new estimates for general Navier–Stokes solutions, which have rather simple forms. They control the difference between mean values of the velocity over two concentric circles in terms of the Dirichlet integral in the annulus between them.
Inhomogenous Navier--Stokes equations with unbounded density

Abstract:In the current state of the art regarding the Navier--Stokes equations, the existence of unique solutions for incompressible flows in two spatial dimensions is already well-established. Recently, these results have been extended to models with variable density, maintaining positive outcomes for merely bounded densities, even in cases with large vacuum regions. However, the study of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with unbounded densities remains incomplete. Addressing this gap is the focus of the present paper. Our main result demonstrates the global existence of a unique solution for flows initiated by unbounded density, whose regularity/integrability is characterized within a specific subset of the Yudovich class of unbounded functions. The core of our proof lies in the application of Desjardins' inequality, combined with a blow-up criterion for ordinary differential equations. Furthermore, we derive time-weighted estimates that guarantee the existence of a $C^1$ velocity field and ensure the equivalence of Eulerian and Lagrangian formulations of the equations. Finally, by leveraging results from \cite{DanMu}, we conclude the uniqueness of the solution.

Non-uniqueness of admissible solutions for the 2D Euler equation with $L^p$ vortex data

Abstract:For any $2<p<\infty$ we prove that there exists an initial velocity field $v^\circ\in L^2$ with vorticity $\omega^\circ\in L^1\cap L^p$ for which there are infinitely many bounded admissible solutions $v\in C_tL^2$ to the 2D Euler equation. This shows sharpness of the weak-strong uniqueness principle, as well as sharpness of Yudovich's proof of uniqueness in the class of bounded admissible solutions. The initial data are truncated power-law vortices. The construction is based on finding a suitable self-similar subsolution and then applying the convex integration method. In addition, we extend it for $1<p<\infty$ and show that the energy dissipation rate of the subsolution vanishes at $t=0$ if and only if $p\geq 3/2$, which is the Onsager critical exponent in terms of $L^p$ control on vorticity in 2D.

Abstract:We study the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations of steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in arbitrary bounded multiply connected plane or axially-symmetric spatial domains. We prove that this problem has a solution under the sole necessary condition of zero total flux through the boundary. The problem was formulated by Jean Leray 80 years ago. The proof of the main result uses Bernoulli's law for a weak solution to the Euler equations.

Abstract:We investigate the initial-value problem for the incompressible tangential Navier-Stokes equation with variable viscosity on a given two-dimensional surface without boundary. Existence of global weak and strong solutions under inhomogeneous forcing is proved by a fixed-point and continuation argument. Continuous dependence on data, backward uniqueness, and instantaneous regularization are also discussed. Depending on the effect of the inhomogeneous forcing on the dissipative and the nondissipative components of the system, we investigate the long-time behavior of solutions. We prove the existence and properties of the $\sigma$-global attractor, in the case of bounded trajectories, and of the so-called unbounded attractor, for unbounded trajectories.

Abstract:The axially symmetric solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations are considered in a bounded cylinder Ω⊂R3 with the axis of symmetry. S1 is the boundary of the cylinder parallel to the axis of symmetry, and S2 is perpendicular to it. We have two parts of S2. On S1 and S2, we impose vanishing of the normal component of velocity and the angular component of vorticity. Moreover, we assume that the angular component of velocity vanishes on S1 and the normal derivative of the angular component of velocity vanishes on S2. We prove the existence of global regular solutions. To prove this, the coordinate of velocity along the axis of symmetry must vanish on it. We have to emphasize that the technique of weighted spaces applied to the stream function plays a crucial role in the proof of global regular axially symmetric solutions. The paper is a generalization of Part 1, where the periodic boundary conditions are prescribed on S2. The transformation is not trivial because it needs to examine many additional boundary terms and derive new estimates.

Weakly turbulent solution to Schrödinger equation on the two-dimensional torus with real potential decaying at infinity

Abstract:We build a smooth time-dependent real potential on the two-dimensional torus, decaying as time tends to infinity in Sobolev norms along with all its time derivative, and we exhibit a smooth solution to the associated Schrödinger equation on the two-dimensional torus whose $H^s$ norms nevertheless grow logarithmically as time tends to infinity. We use Fourier decomposition in order to exhibit a discrete resonant system of interactions, which we are further able to reduce to a sequence of finite-dimensional linear systems along which the energy propagates to higher and higher frequencies. The constructions are very explicit and we can thus obtain lower bounds on the growth rate of the solution.

Abstract:We consider the steady-state Navier–Stokes equation in the whole space driven by a forcing function f. We show that there exists a constant Mo > 0 such that for any M ⩾ Mo, provided the source terms f are sufficiently small in a natural norm (the smallness depending only on M), and the low frequencies of f are sufficiently controlled then there exists a solution U with bounds . These solutions are unique among all solutions with finite energy and finite Dirichlet integral. Using Fourier splitting tools, the constructed solutions will be shown to be stable in the following sense: if U is such a solution then any viscous, incompressible flow in the whole space, driven by f and starting with finite energy, will return to U.

Stochastic Tamed Navier–Stokes Equations on R: The Existence and the Uniqueness of Solutions and the Existence of an Invariant Measure

Abstract:Röckner and Zhang (Probab Theory Relat Fields 145, 211–267, 2009) proved the existence of a unique strong solution to a stochastic tamed 3D Navier–Stokes equation in the whole space and for the periodic boundary case using a result from Stroock and Varadhan (Multidimensional diffusion processes, Springer, Berlin, 1979). In the latter case, they also proved the existence of an invariant measure. In this paper, we improve their results (but for a slightly simplified system) using a self-contained approach. In particular, we generalise their result about an estimate on the L4-norm of the solution from the torus to R3, see Lemma 5.1 and thus establish the existence of an invariant measure on R3 for a time-homogeneous damped tamed 3D Navier–Stokes equation, given by (6.1).
