Abstract:In this article we generalize the theory of minimal models in rational homotopy theory to the context of persistence. Our main motivation is the computation of an explicit finite, cellular presentation of the persistent minimal model that computes persistent rational type of copersistent simply-connected spaces. We give an explicit construction of minimal models of maps between commutative differential-graded algebras, which we use to construct minimal models of tame persistent CDGAs. We then build a model structure on persistent CDGAs for which these minimal models become cell complexes. As an application of our results, we construct an explicit rational Postnikov tower of a simply-connected copersistent spaces.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to generalize minimal models in classical rational homotopy theory to the context of persistence, thereby providing an explicit and finite cellular representation for persistent rational homotopy types. Specifically, the authors hope to construct persistent minimal models that can calculate persistent rational types and apply them to the study of persistent homology and the field of topological data analysis (TDA).
### Main problem decomposition
1. **Construction of persistent minimal models**:
- The authors' goal is to generalize the method of constructing Sullivan minimal models by induction to CDGAs (commutative differential graded algebras) in the context of persistence.
- This involves how to define and implement "cell attachment" in the context of persistence, that is, how to add intervals in persistent CDGAs to maintain a one - to - one correspondence with generators of rational homotopy groups.
2. **Establishment of model structure**:
- To achieve the above goals, the authors introduce a new model structure - the interval - sphere model structure, and study the properties of persistent CDGAs under this structure.
- They also prove that the cell attachment operation under this model structure can be used as a generating fibration for a new type of combinatorial, compactly - generated model structure.
3. **Application: Construction of rational Postnikov towers**:
- As an application, the authors use the developed tools to construct a rational Postnikov tower of a simply - connected persistent space, which provides a specific algebraic framework for understanding the rational homotopy type of persistent spaces.
### Formulas and key concepts
- **Interval decomposition**: Persistent module \( V \sim \bigoplus_{\gamma} I[s_{\gamma}, t_{\gamma}) \), where \( I[s_{\gamma}, t_{\gamma}) \) represents a functor that is identically equal to \( \mathbb{Q} \) on the half - open interval \( [s_{\gamma}, t_{\gamma}) \) and zero elsewhere.
\[
I[s_{\gamma}, t_{\gamma}) =
\begin{cases}
\mathbb{Q} & \text{if } s_{\gamma} \leq t < t_{\gamma} \\
0 & \text{otherwise}
\end{cases}
\]
- **Cell attachment**: The cell attachment operation defined on persistent CDGAs, formally similar to the construction of cell complexes in classical homotopy theory:
\[
M \to M \langle V \rangle
\]
where \( V \) is a graded vector space, and \( d: V[1] \to M \) is a graded linear map that satisfies certain compatibility conditions.
- **Hirsch extension**: The Hirsch extension defined in persistent CDGAs, used to gradually approximate and construct persistent minimal models:
\[
\begin{array}{ccc}
A & \rightarrow & A \langle V \rangle \\
\downarrow & & \downarrow \\
B & \rightarrow & B \langle W \rangle
\end{array}
\]
These formulas and concepts together form the core technical means of the article, enabling the authors to effectively calculate and analyze rational homotopy types in the context of persistence.
