Abstract:We present the resummation of one-jettiness for the colour-singlet plus jet production process $p p \to ( \gamma^*/Z \to \ell^+ \ell^-) + {\text{jet}}$ at hadron colliders up to the fourth logarithmic order (N$^3$LL). This is the first resummation at this order for processes involving three coloured partons at the Born level. We match our resummation formula to the corresponding fixed-order predictions, extending the validity of our results to regions of the phase space where further hard emissions are present. This result paves the way for the construction of next-to-next-to-leading order simulations for colour-singlet plus jet production matched to parton showers in the GENEVA framework.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to solve the problem of accurate theoretical prediction in the process of a color - singlet system (such as the Z boson) plus a jet produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Specifically, the paper focuses on the consistent resummation of one - jettiness for the process \(pp\rightarrow(\gamma^*/Z\rightarrow\ell^+\ell^ -)+ \text{jet}\) up to the fourth logarithmic order (N3LL). This process involves the first N3LL - order resummation of three coloured partons at the Born level, which is of great significance for improving the accuracy of theoretical prediction.
### Background and Motivation
In the physics program of the LHC, it is crucial to study the production of color - singlet systems under large recoil. In particular, in order to match the accuracy of the experimentally measured transverse momentum (\(q_T\)) spectrum of the Z boson, higher - accuracy theoretical predictions are required. Combining the next - to - next - leading - order (NNLO) prediction and \(q_T\) resummation can provide an accurate description over the entire momentum range and be used to extract the strong coupling constant \(\alpha_s\) and as a background for new - physics searches.
### One - Jettiness
One - jettiness is an event - shape variable suitable for describing the color - singlet - plus - jet process, which is not affected by leading or non - global logarithms. It is a special case of N - jettiness and has been used in NNLO slicing calculations. In this paper, the authors perform an N3LL - order resummation of one - jettiness, providing the most advanced prediction so far, while previously only the NNLL order was known.
### Methods and Results
1. **Factorization Formula**:
- The paper introduces the general factorization formula for the N - jettiness distribution and details its components and their renormalization group (RG) evolution.
- By solving the RG equations of the hard, soft, beam and jet functions, the resummation of large - scale ratios of these logarithms is achieved.
2. **Hard Function**:
- The hard function satisfies an RG equation, and its solution depends on the anomalous dimension of the Wilson coefficient.
- By including higher - order perturbative terms, the accuracy of the resummation prediction is improved.
3. **Beam and Jet Functions**:
- The beam and jet functions satisfy their respective RG equations, and these equations are solved by transforming them into a simple multiplicative form through Laplace transformation.
4. **Soft Function**:
- The NLO calculation of the soft function has been given in the literature, and this paper extends it to the N3LL order.
- The behavior of the soft function in different reference frames is calculated by analytical and numerical methods.
5. **Final Resummation and Matching Formula**:
- All components are combined to obtain the final resummation formula, and it is matched with the corresponding fixed - order prediction to extend the description of the one - jettiness spectrum.
### Conclusion
The work in this paper lays the foundation for the next - to - next - leading - order simulation of the color - singlet - plus - jet process, especially for matching to the parton - shower algorithm in the Geneva framework. This result not only improves the accuracy of theoretical prediction but also provides an important tool for future LHC data analysis.
