Abstract:In this paper, we study the graph-theoretic analogues of vector Laplacian (or Helmholtz operator) and vector Laplace equation. We determine the graph matrix representation of vector Laplacian and obtain the dimension of solution space of vector Laplace equation on graphs.

Abstract:Nowadays a great attention has been focused on the discrete fractional Laplace operator as the natural counterpart of the continuous one. In this paper, we discretize the fractional Laplace operator $(-\Delta)^{s}$ for an arbitrary finite graph and any positive real number $s$. It is shown that $(-\Delta)^{s}$ can be explicitly represented by eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator $-\Delta$. Moreover, we study its important properties, such as $(-\Delta)^{s}$ converges to $-\Delta$ as $s$ tends to $1$; while $(-\Delta)^{s}$ converges to the identity map as $s$ tends to $0$ on a specific function space. For related problems involving the fractional Laplace operator, we consider the fractional Kazdan-Warner equation and obtain several existence results via variational principles and the method of upper and lower solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with upper bounds of eigenvalues of Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds and finite graphs. While on the former the Laplace operator is generated by the Riemannian metric, on the latter it reflects combinatorial structure of a graph. Respectively, eigenvalues have many applications in geometry as well as in combinatorics and in other fields of mathematics. We develop a universal approach to upper bounds on both continuous and discrete structures based upon certain properties of the corresponding heat kernel. This approach is perhaps much more general than its realization here. Basically, we start with the following entries: 1◦ an underlying space M with a finite measure μ; 2◦ a well-defined Laplace operator ∆ on functions on M so that ∆ is a self-adjoint operator in L(M,μ) with a discrete spectrum; 3◦ if M has a boundary, then the boundary condition should be chosen so that it does not disrupt self-adjointness of ∆ and is of dissipative nature; 4◦ a distance function dist(x, y) on M so that |∇dist| ≤ 1 for an appropriate notion of gradient.

Abstract:We study the differential operator $A=\frac{d^4}{dx^4}$ acting on a connected network $\mathcal{G}$ along with $\mathcal L^2$, the square of the discrete Laplacian acting on a connected discrete graph $\mathsf{G}$. For both operators we discuss well-posedness of the associated {linear} parabolic problems \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=-Au,\qquad\frac{df}{dt}=-\mathcal L^2 f, \] on $L^p(\mathcal{G})$ or $\ell^p(\mathsf{V})$, respectively, for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. In view of the well-known lack of parabolic maximum principle for all elliptic differential operators of order $2N$ for $N>1$, our most surprising finding is that, after some transient time, the parabolic equations driven by $-A$ may display Markovian features, depending on the imposed transmission conditions in the vertices. Analogous results seem to be unknown in the case of general domains and even bounded intervals. Our analysis is based on a detailed study of bi-harmonic functions complemented by simple combinatorial arguments. We elaborate on analogous issues for the discrete bi-Laplacian; a characterization of complete graphs in terms of the Markovian property of the semigroup generated by $-\mathcal L^2$ is also presented.

Abstract:We explore the relationship between lattice field theory and graph theory, placing special emphasis on the interplay between Dirac and scalar lattice operators and matrices within the realm of spectral graph theory. Beyond delving into fundamental concepts of spectral graph theory, such as adjacency and Laplacian matrices, we introduce a novel matrix called an "antisymmetrized adjacency matrix", specifically tailored for cycle digraphs ( T 1 lattice) and simple directed paths ( B 1 lattice). The nontrivial relationship between graph theory matrices and lattice operators shows that the graph Laplacian matrix mirrors the lattice scalar operator and the Wilson term in lattice fermions, while the antisymmetrized adjacency matrix, along with its extensions to higher dimensions, is equivalent to naive lattice Dirac operators. Building upon these connections, we provide rigorous proofs for two key assertions: (i) The count of zero-modes in a free lattice scalar operator coincides with the zeroth Betti number of the underlying graph (lattice). (ii) The maximum count of Dirac zero-modes in a free lattice fermion operator is equivalent to the cumulative sum of all Betti numbers when the D -dimensional graph results from a Cartesian product of cycle digraphs ( T 1 lattice) and simple directed paths ( B 1 lattice).

Edge Laplacians and Edge Poisson Transforms for Graphs

Abstract:For a finite graph, we establish natural isomorphisms between eigenspaces of a Laplace operator acting on functions on the edges and eigenspaces of a transfer operator acting on functions on one-sided infinite non-backtracking paths. Interpreting the transfer operator as a classical dynamical system and the Laplace operator as its quantization, this result can be viewed as a quantum-classical correspondence. In contrast to previously established quantum-classical correspondences for the vertex Laplacian which exclude certain exceptional spectral parameters, our correspondence is valid for all parameters. This allows us to relate certain spectral quantities to topological properties of the graph such as the cyclomatic number and the 2-colorability. The quantum-classical correspondence for the edge Laplacian is induced by an edge Poisson transform on the universal covering of the graph which is a tree of bounded degree. In the special case of regular trees, we relate both the vertex and the edge Poisson transform to the representation theory of the automorphism group of the tree and study associated operator valued Hecke algebras.

Abstract:Formal Laplace operators are analyzed for a large class of resistance networks with vertex weights. The graphs are completed with respect to the minimal resistance path metric. Compactness and a novel connectivity hypothesis for the completed graphs play an essential role. A version of the Dirichlet problem is solved. Self adjoint Laplace operators and the probability semigroups they generate are constructed using reflecting and absorbing conditions on subsets of the graph boundary.

Abstract:We study the Laplacian on family preserving metric graphs. These are graphs that have a certain symmetry that, as we show, allows for a decomposition into a direct sum of one-dimensional operators whose properties are explicitly related to the structure of the graph. Such decompositions have been extremely useful in the study of Schrödinger operators on metric trees. We show that the tree structure is not essential, and moreover, obtain a direct and simple correspondence between such decompositions in the discrete and continuum case.

Fractional Laplace operator and related Schrödinger equations on locally finite graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we first define a discrete version of the fractional Laplace operator $(-\Delta)^{s}$ through the heat semigroup on a stochastically complete, connected, locally finite graph $G = (V, E, \mu, w)$. Secondly, we define the fractional divergence and give another form of $(-\Delta)^s$. The third point, and the foremost, is the introduction of the fractional Sobolev space $W^{s,2}(V)$, which is necessary when we study problems involving $(-\Delta)^{s}$. Finally, using the mountain-pass theorem and the Nehari manifold, we obtain multiplicity solutions to a discrete fractional Schrödinger equation on $G$. We caution the readers that though these existence results are well known in the continuous case, the discrete case is quite different.

Abstract:The Green's function of the discrete Schödinger operator on a finite graph is considered. This setting reproduces Laplacian and signless Laplacian by adjusting appropriate potentials. We show two ways of the expression for the Green's function by using graph structures. The first way is based on the factor of the graph by subtrees which have uni-self-loops; the second way is based on that by odd unicycle graphs.

Abstract:Let G=(V,E) be a locally finite graph, Ω⊂V be a bounded domain, Δ be the usual graph Laplacian, and λ1(Ω) be the first eigenvalue of −Δ with respect to Dirichlet boundary condition. Using the mountain pass theorem due to Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz, we prove that if α<λ1(Ω), then for any p>2, there exists a positive solution to{−Δu−αu=|u|p−2uinΩ∘,u=0on∂Ω, where Ω∘ and ∂Ω denote the interior and the boundary of Ω respectively. Also we consider similar problems involving the p-Laplacian and poly-Laplacian by the same method. Such problems can be viewed as discrete versions of the Yamabe type equations on Euclidean space or compact Riemannian manifolds.
Landscape estimates of the integrated density of states for Jacobi operators on graphs

Abstract:We show the integrated density of states for a variety of Jacobi operators on graphs, such as the Anderson model and random hopping models on graphs with Gaussian heat kernel bounds, can be estimated from above and below in terms of the localization landscape counting function. Specific examples of these graphs include stacked and decorated lattices, graphs corresponding to band matrices, and aperiodic tiling graphs. The upper bound part of the landscape law also applies to the fractal Sierpinski gasket graph. As a consequence of the landscape law, we obtain landscape-based proofs of the Lifshitz tails in several models including random band matrix models, certain bond percolation Hamiltonians on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and Jacobi operators on certain stacks of graphs. We also present intriguing numerical simulations exploring the behavior of the landscape counting function across various models.

Discrete infinity Laplace equations on graphs and tug-of-war games

Abstract:We study the Dirichlet problem of the following discrete infinity Laplace equation on a subgraph with finite width $$\Delta_{\infty} u(x) = \inf_{y \sim x}u(y)+\sup_{y \sim x}u(y)-2u(x) = f(x).$$ We say that a subgraph has finite width if the distances from all vertices to the boundary are uniformly bounded. By Perron's method, we show the existence of bounded solutions. We also prove the uniqueness if $f$ is nonnegative by establishing a comparison result, and hence obtain the existence of game values for corresponding tug-of-war games introduced by Peres, Schramm, Sheffield, and Wilson (2009). As an application we show a strong Liouville property for infinity harmonic functions. By an argument of Arzela-Ascoli, we prove the convergence of solutions of $\varepsilon$-tug-of-war games as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0. Correspondingly, we obtain the existence of bounded solutions to normalized infinity Laplace equations on Euclidean domains with finite width.

A quantum graph FFT with applications to partial differential equations on networks

Abstract:Many natural and manufactured structures can be effectively modeled as networks of one dimensional segments joined at nodes. A new algorithm for the numerical solution of various time dependent partial differential equations on some of these networks is presented. The main novelty is a network version of the Fast Fourier Transform, which provides an efficient technique for expansions with eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator.

Abstract:We analyze various formulations of the $\infty$-Laplacian eigenvalue problem on graphs, comparing their properties and highlighting their respective advantages and limitations. First, we investigate the graph $\infty$-eigenpairs arising as limits of $p$-Laplacian eigenpairs, extending key results from the continuous setting to the discrete domain. We prove that every limit of $p$-Laplacian eigenpair, for $p$ going to $\infty$, satisfies a limit eigenvalue equation and establish that the corresponding eigenvalue can be bounded from below by the packing radius of the graph, indexed by the number of nodal domains induced by the eigenfunction. Additionally, we show that the limits, for $p$ going to $\infty$, of the variational $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues are bounded both from above and from below by the packing radii, achieving equality for the smallest two variational eigenvalues and corresponding packing radii of the graph. In the second part of the paper, we introduce generalized $\infty$-Laplacian eigenpairs as generalized critical points and values of the $\infty$-Rayleigh quotient. We prove that the generalized variational $\infty$-eigenvalues satisfy the same upper bounds in terms of packing radii as the limit of the variational eigenvalues, again with equality holding between the smallest two $\infty$-variational eigenvalues and the first and second packing radii of the graph. Moreover, we establish that any solution to the limit eigenvalue equation is also a generalized eigenpair, while any generalized eigenpair satisfies the limit eigenvalue equation on a suitable subgraph.

For a lattice graph, we prove the upper and lower estimates for the sum of the first $k$ Dirichlet eigenvalues of the fractional Laplacian, extending the classical results by Li-Yau and Kröger.

Abstract:We study harmonic functions on general weighted graphs which allow for a compatible intrinsic metric. We prove an L^p Liouville type theorem which is a quantitative integral L^p estimate of harmonic functions analogous to Karp's theorem for Riemannian manifolds. As corollaries we obtain Yau's L^p-Liouville type theorem on graphs, identify the domain of the generator of the semigroup on L^p and get a criterion for recurrence. As a side product, we show an analogue of Yau's L^p Caccioppoli inequality. Furthermore, we derive various Liouville type results for harmonic functions on graphs and harmonic maps from graphs into Hadamard spaces.

Under different assumptions on potential function $h$, we prove the existence of ground state solutions respectively by the methods of Nehari manifold.
