Abstract:In this article we study convex non-autonomous variational problems with differential forms and corresponding function spaces. We introduce a general framework for constructing counterexamples to the Lavrentiev gap, which we apply to several models, including the double phase, borderline case of double phase potential, and variable exponent. The results for the borderline case of double phase potential provide new insights even for the scalar case, i.e., variational problems with 0-forms.

Abstract:We explore the dynamical behavior and energetic properties of a model of two species that interact nonlocally on finite graphs. The authors recently introduced the model in the context of nonquadratic Finslerian gradient flows on generalized graphs featuring nonlinear mobilities. In a continuous and local setting, this class of systems exhibits a wide variety of patterns, including mixing of the two species, partial engulfment, or phase separation. This work showcases how this rich behavior carries over to the graph structure. We present analytical and numerical evidence thereof.

On the singular limit problem in nonlocal balance laws: Applications to nonlocal lane-changing traffic flow models

Abstract:We present a convergence result from nonlocal to local behavior for a system of nonlocal balance laws. The velocity field of the underlying conservation laws is diagonal. In contrast, the coupling to the remaining balance laws involves a nonlinear right-hand side that depends on the solution, nonlocal term, and other factors. The nonlocal operator integrates the density around a specific spatial point, which introduces nonlocality into the problem. Inspired by multi-lane traffic flow modeling and lane-changing, the nonlocal kernel is discontinuous and only looks downstream. In this paper, we prove the convergence of the system to the local entropy solutions when the nonlocal operator (chosen to be of an exponential type for simplicity) converges to a Dirac distribution. Numerical illustrations that support the main results are also presented.

Local integrals of motion in dipole-conserving models with Hilbert space fragmentation

Abstract:Hilbert space fragmentation is an ergodicity breaking phenomenon, in which Hamiltonian shatters into exponentially many dynamically disconnected sectors. In many fragmented systems, these sectors can be labelled by statistically localized integrals of motion, which are nonlocal operators. We study the paradigmatic nearest-neighbor pair hopping (PH) model exhibiting the so-called strong fragmentation. We show that this model hosts local integrals of motion (LIOMs), which correspond to frozen density modes with long wavelengths. The latter modes become subdiffusive when longer-range pair hoppings are allowed. Finally, we make a connection with a tilted (Stark) chain. Contrary to the dipole-conserving effective models, the tilted chain is shown to support either Hamiltonian or dipole moment as an LIOM. Numerical results are obtained from a numerical algorithm, in which finding LIOMs is reduced to the data compression problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a dynamical urban planning model. This leads us to study a system of nonlinear equations coupled through multi-marginal optimal transport problems. A simple case consists in solving two equations coupled through the solution to the Monge-Amp{è}re equation. We show that the Wasserstein gradient flow theory provides a very good framework to solve this highly nonlinear system. At the end, an uniqueness result is presented in dimension one based on convexity arguments.

Abstract:We investigate a highly-nonlocal generalization of the Lindhard function, given by the jellium-with-gap model. We find a band-gap-dependent gradient expansion of the kinetic energy, which performs noticeably well for large atoms. Using the static linear response theory and the simplest semilocal model for the local band gap, we derive a non-empirical generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of the kinetic energy. This GGA kinetic energy functional is remarkably accurate for the description of weakly interacting molecular systems within the subsystem formulation of Density Functional Theory.

Abstract:We propose a machine-learning inspired variational method to obtain the Liouvillian gap, which plays a crucial role in characterizing the relaxation time and dissipative phase transitions of open quantum systems. By using "spin bi-base mapping," we map the density matrix to a pure restricted-Boltzmann-machine (RBM) state and transform the Liouvillian superoperator to a rank-two non-Hermitian operator. The Liouvillian gap can be obtained by a variational real-time evolution algorithm under this non-Hermitian operator. We apply our method to the dissipative Heisenberg model in both one and two dimensions. For the isotropic case, we find that the Liouvillian gap can be analytically obtained and in one dimension even the whole Liouvillian spectrum can be exactly solved using the Bethe ansatz method. By comparing our numerical results with their analytical counterparts, we show that the Liouvillian gap could be accessed by the RBM approach efficiently to a desirable accuracy, regardless of the dimensionality and entanglement properties.

In particular, we consider a not necessarily positive operator which appears in models describing the propagation of flames. A careful adaptation of well known variational methods is required to deal with the possible existence of negative eigenvalues.

Abstract:Integro-differential equations, analyzed in this work, comprise an important class of models of continuum media with nonlocal interactions. Examples include peridynamics, population and opinion dynamics, the spread of disease models, and nonlocal diffusion, to name a few. They also arise naturally as a continuum limit of interacting dynamical systems on networks. Many real-world networks, including neuronal, epidemiological, and information networks, exhibit self-similarity, which translates into self-similarity of the spatial domain of the continuum limit. For a class of evolution equations with nonlocal interactions on self-similar domains, we construct a discontinuous Galerkin method and develop a framework for studying its convergence. Specifically, for the model at hand, we identify a natural scale of function spaces, which respects self-similarity of the spatial domain, and estimate the rate of convergence under minimal assumptions on the regularity of the interaction kernel. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical experiments on a model problem.

Abstract:We present a class of models of elastic phase transitions with incompatible energy wells in any space dimension, where an abundance of Lipschitz global minimizers in a hard device coexists with a complete lack of strong local minimizers. The analysis hinges on the proof that every strong local minimizer in a hard device is also a global minimizer which is applicable much beyond the chosen class of models. Along the way we show that a new proof of sufficiency for a subclass of affine boundary conditions can be built around a novel nonlinear generalization of the classical Clapeyron theorem, whose subtle relation to dynamics was studied extensively by R. Fosdick.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we prove existence of solutions to Schrödinger-Maxwell type systems involving mixed local-nonlocal operators. Two different models are considered: classical Schrödinger-Maxwell equations and Schrödinger-Maxwell equations with a coercive potential, and the main novelty is that the nonlocal part of the operator is allowed to be nonpositive definite according to a real parameter. We then provide a range of parameter values to ensure the existence of solitary standing waves, obtained as Mountain Pass critical points for the associated energy functionals.

Local interpolation techniques for higher-order singular perturbations of non-convex functionals: free-discontinuity problems

Abstract:We develop a general approach, using local interpolation inequalities, to non-convex integral functionals depending on the gradient with a singular perturbation by derivatives of order $k\ge 2$. When applied to functionals giving rise to free-discontinuity energies, such methods permit to change boundary values for derivatives up to order $k-1$ in problems defining density functions for the jump part, thus allowing to prove optimal-profile formulas, and to deduce compactness and lower bounds. As an application, we prove that for $k$-th order perturbations of energies depending on the gradient behaving as a constant at infinity, the jump energy density is a constant $m_k$ times the $k$-th root of the jump size. The result is first proved for truncated quadratic energy densities and in the one-dimensional case, from which the general higher-dimensional case can be obtained by slicing techniques. A wide class of non-convex energies can be studied as an envelope of these particular ones. Finally, we remark that an approximation of the Mumford-Shah functional can be obtained by letting $k$ tend to infinity. We also derive a new approximation of the Blake-Zisserman functional.

Abstract:This paper considers a local and non-local problem characterized by singular nonlinearity and a source term. Specifically, we focus on the following problem: \begin{equation}\label{A}\tag{P} -\Delta_{p} u + (-\Delta)^{s}_{q} u = f(x) u^{-\alpha} + g(x) u^{\beta}, \quad u > 0 \quad \text{in } \Omega; \quad u = 0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^{N} \setminus \Omega, \end{equation} where $ \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N $ is an open bounded domain with a $ C^{2} $ boundary $ \partial \Omega $, and $ N > p $. We assume that $ 0 < s < 1 $ and $ 1 < p, q < \infty $, with the conditions $ q = p $ or $ q < p $, corresponding to the homogeneous and non-homogeneous cases, respectively. The parameters satisfy $ 0 < \beta < q - 1 $ and $ \alpha > 0 $. The function $ f $ is non-zero and belongs to a suitable Lebesgue space $ L^{r}(\Omega) $ for some $ r \in [1, \infty] $, or satisfies a growth condition involving negative powers of the distance function $ d(\cdot) $ near the boundary $ \partial \Omega $. Additionally, $ g $ is a nonnegative function within appropriate Lebesgue spaces. The primary objectives of this paper are twofold. First, we establish the uniqueness of infinite energy solutions to problem \eqref{A} by introducing a novel comparison principle under certain conditions. Second, we derive several existence results for weak solutions in various senses, accompanied by regularity results for problem \eqref{A}. Furthermore, we present a non-existence result when the function $ f(x) \sim d^{-\delta}(x) $ and $ x $ is near the boundary, under the condition $ \delta \geq p $. Our approach leverages the Picone identities on one hand and the interaction between the local and non-local terms on the other hand.
