Abstract:We answer a question of Calderoni and Clay by showing that the conjugation equivalence relation of left orderings of the Baumslag-Solitar groups $\mathrm{BS}(1,n)$ is hyperfinite for any $n$. Our proof relies on a classification of $\mathrm{BS}(1,n)$'s left-orderings via its one-dimensional dynamical realizations. We furthermore use the effectiveness of the dynamical realizations of $\mathrm{BS}(1,n)$ to study algorithmic properties of the left-orderings on $\mathrm{BS}(1,n)$.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented simple groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. Our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, have infinite geometric dimension, and admit a nontrivial homogeneous quasimorphism (and hence have infinite commutator width).

Abstract:We prove that the finitely generated simple left orderable groups constructed by the second author with Hyde have vanishing second bounded cohomology, both with trivial real and trivial integral coefficients. As a consequence, these are the first examples of finitely generated non-indicable left orderable groups with vanishing second bounded cohomology. This answers Question 8 from the 2018 ICM proceedings article of Andrés Navas.

Abstract:We propose a criterion for preserving the regularity of a formal language representation when passing from groups to subgroups. We use this criterion to show that the regularity of a positive cone language in a left-orderable group passes to its finite index subgroups, and to show that there exists no left order on a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group such that the corresponding positive cone is represented by a quasi-geodesic regular language. We also answer one of Navas' questions by giving an example of an infinite family of groups which admit a positive cone that is generated by exactly $k$ generators, for every $k \geq 3$. As a special case of our construction, we obtain a finitely generated positive cone for $F_2 \times \mathbb{Z}$.

In particular, we construct left orderings of inductive limits of amalgamated free products by using isolated left orderings of the groups appearing in the inductive system. Moreover, we show that they are no longer isolated orderings.

Abstract:The notion of left-symmetric bialgebra was introduced in [C. M. Bai, Left-symmetric bialgebra and an analogue of the classical Yang–Baxter equation, Commun. Contemp. Math. 10(2) (2008) 221–260] which is equivalent to a parakähler Lie algebra which is the Lie algebra of a Lie group G with a G-invariant parakähler structure. In this paper, we study a conformal analog of left-symmetric bialgebras. The notions of left-symmetric conformal coalgebra and bialgebra are introduced. Moreover, the constructions of matched pairs of Lie conformal algebras and left-symmetric conformal algebras are presented. We show that a finite left-symmetric conformal bialgebra which is free as a ℂ[∂]-module is equivalent to a parakähler Lie conformal algebra. We also obtain a conformal analog of the S-equation (see [C. M. Bai, Left-symmetric bialgebras and an analogue of the classical Yang–Baxter equation, Commun. Contemp. Math. 10(2) (2008) 221–260]), and give a construction of the conformal symplectic double.

Abstract:We show that no left-ordering on a free product of (left-orderable) groups is isolated. In particular, we show that the space of left-orderings of free product of finitely generated groups is homeomorphic to the Cantor set. With the same techniques, we also give a new and constructive proof of the fact that the natural conjugation action of the free group (on two or more generators) on its space of left-orderings has a dense orbit.

Abstract:We develop new tools to analyze the complexity of the conjugacy equivalence relation $E_\mathsf{lo}(G)$, whenever $G$ is a left-orderable group. Our methods are used to demonstrate non-smoothness of $E_\mathsf{lo}(G)$ for certain groups $G$ of dynamical origin, such as certain amalgams constructed from Thompson's group $F$. We also initiate a systematic analysis of $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$, where $M$ is a $3$-manifold. We prove that if $M$ is not prime, then $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ is a universal countable Borel equivalence relation, and show that in certain cases the complexity of $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ is bounded below by the complexity of the conjugacy equivalence relation arising from the fundamental group of each of the JSJ pieces of $M$. We also prove that if $M$ is the complement of a nontrivial knot in $S^3$ then $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ is not smooth, and show how determining smoothness of $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ for all knot manifolds $M$ is related to the L-space conjecture.

Abstract:Let G be a group and H be a subgroup of G. We say that H is left relatively convex in G if the left G-set G/H has at least one G-invariant order; when G is left orderable, this holds if and only if H is convex in G under some left ordering of G. We give a criterion for H to be left relatively convex in G that generalizes a famous theorem of Burns and Hale and has essentially the same proof. We show that all maximal cyclic subgroups are left relatively convex in free groups, in right-angled Artin groups, and in surface groups that are not the Klein-bottle group. The free-group case extends a result of Duncan and Howie. We show that if G is left orderable, then each free factor of G is left relatively convex in G. More generally, for any graph of groups, if each edge group is left relatively convex in each of its vertex groups, then each vertex group is left relatively convex in the fundamental group; this generalizes a result of Chiswell. We show that all maximal cyclic subgroups in locally residually torsion-free nilpotent groups are left relatively convex.

Abstract:Decomposable ordered structures were introduced in \cite{OnSt} to develop a general framework to study `finite-dimensional' totally ordered structures. This paper continues this work to include decomposable structures on which a ordered group operation is defined on the structure. The main result at this level of generality asserts that any such group is supersolvable, and that topologically it is homeomorphic to the product of o-minimal groups. Then, working in an o-minimal ordered field $\mathcal R$ satisfying some additional assumptions, in Sections 3-7 definable ordered groups of dimension 2 and 3 are completely analyzed modulo definable group isomorphism. Lastly, this analysis is refined to provide a full description of these groups with respect to definable ordered group isomorphism.

Characterizing the Residual Finiteness of Conjugation Quandles on the Baumslag-Solitar Groups

Abstract:This article fully characterize the residual finiteness of conjugation quandles of the Baumslag-Solitar groups. The key difference between groups and their derived conjugation quandles is that many conjugation quandles are infinitely generated even when their underlying groups are finitely generated. Notably, we prove that the conjugation quandles of Baumslag-Solitar groups are always infinitely generated. Moreover, we show that if a conjugation quandle is Hopfian, then its underlying group is also Hopfian. From this, we identity the conditions for non-Hopfian conjugation quandles of Baumslag-Solitar groups.

Left-orderability of Groups Acting on Bifoliated Planes

Abstract:We prove that any group acting faithfully on a bifoliated plane while preserving the orientations of both foliations is left-orderable. The proof utilizes a construction of a linear order on the set of ends of the leaf spaces, which takes advantage of the additional structure coming with a bifoliation. Moreover, we build an identification between ends of leaf spaces of the bifoliation and subsets of the boundary circle at infinity, and use it to give a condition for the equivalence between a faithful group action on a bifoliated plane and a faithful group action on the set of ends of the leaf spaces.

Abstract:We define what it means for a condensed group action to be open (following Scholze) and show that for open subgroups, many elementary results about abstract modules hold for condensed modules, such as the existence of Mackey's Formula for condensed groups. We also indicate how these results can be "solidified" to obtain their solid versions.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:We show that if a nontrivial group admits a locally invariant ordering, then it admits uncountably many locally invariant orderings. For the case of a left-orderable group, we provide an explicit construction of uncountable families of locally invariant orderings; for a general group we provide an existence theorem that applies compactness to yield uncountably many locally invariant orderings. Along the way, we define and investigate the space of locally invariant orderings of a group, the natural group actions on this space, and their relationship to the space of left-orderings.

Abstract:We study the categorical properties of right-preordered groups, giving an explicit description of limits and colimits in this category, and studying some exactness properties. We show that, from an algebraic point of view, the category of right-preordered groups shares several properties with the one of monoids. Moreover, we describe split extensions of right-preordered groups, showing in particular that semidirect products of ordered groups have always a natural right-preorder.

Abstract:We study the poset of hyperbolic structures on Thompson's group $F$ and its generalizations $F_n$ for $n \geq 2$. The global structure of this poset is as simple as one would expect, with the maximal non-elementary elements being two quasi-parabolic actions corresponding to well-known ascending HNN-extension expressions of $F_n$. However, the local structure turns out to be incredibly rich, in stark contrast with the situation for the $T$ and $V$ counterparts. We show that the subposet of quasi-parabolic hyperbolic structures consists of two isomorphic posets, each of which contains uncountably many subposets of \emph{lamplike} structures, which can be described combinatorially in terms of certain hyperbolic structures on related lamplighter groups. Moreover, each of these subposets, as well as intersections and complements thereof, is very large, in that it contains a copy of the power set of the natural numbers. We also prove that these uncountably many uncountable subposets are not the entire picture, indeed there exists a copy of the power set of the natural numbers consisting entirely of non-lamplike structures. We also prove that this entire vast array of hyperbolic structures on $F_n$ collapses as soon as one takes a natural semidirect product with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. These results are all proved via a detailed analysis of confining subsets, and along the way we establish a number of fundamental results in the theory of confining subsets of groups.

Abstract:Ordering theorems, characterizing when partial orders of a group extend to total orders, are used to generate hypersequent calculi for varieties of lattice-ordered groups (l-groups). These calculi are then used to provide new proofs of theorems arising in the theory of ordered groups. More precisely: an analytic calculus for abelian l-groups is generated using an ordering theorem for abelian groups; a calculus is generated for l-groups and new decidability proofs are obtained for the equational theory of this variety and extending finite subsets of free groups to right orders; and a calculus for representable l-groups is generated and a new proof is obtained that free groups are orderable.
