Abstract:Magnetic Er3+ is doped into the well-studied frustrated normal spinel ZnCr2O4. Various spectroscopies are employed to prove that Er3+ successfully enters the spinel to form ZnCr2-xErxO4 for x less than 0.005. The low levels of Er3+ doping possible nonetheless have a significant effect on the frustrated magnetism and the ordering that is seen near 12 K in the undoped material.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the impact of Er (Erbium) doping on the magnetic behavior of ZnCr2O4 (Zinc Chromate). Specifically, the researchers observed significant magnetic changes by incorporating a small amount of Er3+ ions (doping concentration less than 0.005) into ZnCr2O4. The successful incorporation of Er3+ ions altered the magnetic behavior of the material, particularly the magnetic ordering phenomenon observed at temperatures close to 12 K. The researchers used various spectroscopic techniques to demonstrate that Er3+ successfully entered the ZnCr2O4 lattice, and even at extremely low doping levels, Er3+ had a significant impact on the material's magnetism. The main objective of the study was to investigate how the doping of rare earth element Er3+ alters the spin glass magnetism in ZnCr2O4. By comparing experimental results under different doping conditions, the study found that the magnetic moment of Er3+ is the primary cause of the magnetic changes, rather than its ionic size or disorder effects. Additionally, the study explored the impact of high-temperature synthesis on the magnetic behavior of the material. Overall, this research provides a foundation for further exploration of the effects of doping other rare earth ions on the magnetic behavior of ZnCr2O4.
