We show that any minimal crossing diagram of a composite flat virtual knot is a connected sum diagram. We also show the crossing number of flat virtual knots is super-additive under connected sum.

Abstract:We give a purely combinatorial proof of a Künneth formula for the minus version of knot Floer homology of connected sums by constructing a quasi-isomorphism of grid chain complexes. The quasi-isomorphism naturally deduces that the Legendrian and transverse invariants behave functorially with respect to the connected sum operation.

Abstract:Let $c(K)$ denote the crossing number of a knot $K$ and let $K_1\# K_2$ denote the connected sum of two oriented knots $K_1$ and $K_2$. It is a very old unsolved question that whether $c(K_1\# K_2)=c(K_1)+c(K_2)$. In this paper we show that $c(K_1\# K_2)> (c(K_1)+c(K_2))/16$.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>We study methods for computing the bridge number of a knot from a knot diagram. We prove equivalence between a geometric and a combinatorial definition of the bridge number of a knot diagram. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we show the following result: Let K i be a knot in a closed orientable 3-manifold M i such that (M i ,K i ) is not homeomorphic to (S 2 ×S 1, x 0 ×S 1), i = 1, 2. Suppose that the Euler Characteristic of any meridional essential surface in each knot complement E(K i ) is less than the difference of one and twice of the tunnel number of K i . Then the tunnel number of their connected sum will not go down. If in addition that the distance of any minimal Heegaard splitting of each knot complement is strictly more than 2, then the tunnel number of their connected sum is super additive.

Abstract:We prove a number of fundamental properties about instanton knot Floer homology. Our arguments rely on general properties of sutured Floer theories and apply also in the Heegaard Floer and monopole Floer settings, where many of our results were already known. Our main result is the connected sum formula for instanton knot Floer homology. An extension of this result proves the oriented skein exact triangle for the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology. Finally, we derive a new model of the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology, which takes the form of a free, finitely generated chain complex over a polynomial ring, as opposed to a direct limit. This construction is new to all of the Floer theories. We explore these results also in the context of Heegaard Floer theory as well.

Abstract:This paper defines a new invariant of virtual knots and links that we call the extended bracket polynomial, and denote by <<K>> for a virtual knot or link K. This invariant is a state summation over bracket states of the oriented diagram for K. Each state is reduced to a virtual 4-regular graph in the plane and the polynomial takes values in the module generated by these reduced graphs over the ring Q[A,A^{-1}]. The paper is relatively self-contained, with background information about virtual knots and long virtual knots. We give numerous examples applying the extended bracket, including a new proof of the non-triviality of the Kishino diagram and the flat Kishino diagram and non-classicality of single crossing virtualizations. The paper has a section on the estimation of virtual crossing number using the extended bracket state sum. Examples are given of virtual knots with arbitrary minimal embedding genus and arbitrarily high positive difference between the virtual crossing number and the minimal embedding genus. A simplification of <<K>> is introduced and denoted by A[K]. This simplified extended bracket, the arrow polynomial, is a polynomial in an infinite set of variables. It is quite strong (detecting the flat Kishino diagram for example) and easily computable. The paper contains a description of a computer algorithm for A[K] and uses the arrow polynomial, in conjunction with the extended bracket polynomial to determine the minimum genus surfaces on which some virtual knots can be represented.

Abstract:A virtual link diagram is called {\em (mod $m$) almost classical} if it admits a (mod $m$) Alexander numbering. In \cite{BodenGaudreauHarperNicasWhite}, it is shown that Alexander polynomial for almost classical links can be defined by using the homology of the associated infinite cyclic cover. On the other hand, in \cite{NaokoKamada} an infinite family of $m$ fold covering over a virtual knot is constructed so that it is mod $m$ almost classical link for all $m$ by using oriented cut point. In this paper, another way to obtain a family of $m$-fold coverings over a given virtual knots, which are mod $m$ almost classical, by using knots in $S_{g} \times S^{1}$.

Abstract:A crown diagram of a smooth, closed oriented 4-manifold can be thought of as the projection of a link in the product of a closed surface and the circle, with chords in the circle direction connecting the strands of each crossing. This paper uses a straightforward assignment of integers to these chords to show that the smooth structures on the topological 4-manifold underlying a pair of Fintushel-Stern knot surgery 4-manifolds which are known to have the same Seiberg-Witten invariant are not isotopic. A natural question is to determine if the argument may be strengthened to show these manifolds are not diffeomorphic.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:A knot is a closed loop in space without self-intersection. Two knots are equivalent if there is a self homeomorphism of space bringing one onto the other. An arc presentation is an embedding of a knot in the union of finitely many half planes with a common boundary line such that each half plane contains a simple arc of the knot. The minimal number of such half planes among all arc presentations of a given knot is called the arc index of the knot. A knot is usually presented as a planar diagram with finitely many crossings of two strands where one of the strands goes over the other. A grid diagram is a planar diagram which is a non-simple rectilinear polygon such that vertical edges always cross over horizontal edges at all crossings. It is easily seen that an arc presentation gives rise to a grid diagram and vice versa. It is known that the arc index of an alternating knot is two plus its minimal crossing number. There are 4878 prime alternating knots with minimal crossing number 13. We obtained minimal arc presentations of them in the form of grid diagrams having 15 vertical segments. This is a continuation of the works on prime alternating knots of 11 crossings and 12 crossings.

New invariants for virtual knots via spanning surfaces

Abstract:We define three different types of spanning surfaces for knots in thickened surfaces. We use these to introduce new Seifert matrices, Alexander-type polynomials, genera, and a signature invariant. One of these Alexander polynomials extends to virtual knots and can obstruct a virtual knot from being classical. Furthermore, it can distinguish a knot in a thickened surface from its mirror up to isotopy. We also propose several constructions of Heegaard Floer homology for knots in thickened surfaces, and give examples why they are not stabilization invariant. However, we can define Floer homology for virtual knots by taking a minimal genus representative. Finally, we use the Behrens-Golla $\delta$-invariant to obstruct a knot from being a stabilization of another.

Abstract:Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called purely cosmetic if their surgered manifolds are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Gordon conjectured that non-trivial knots in $S^3$ do not admit purely cosmetic surgeries. In this article, we confirm this conjecture for connected sums of knots by analysing the JSJ-structures.

Abstract:We present a surprisingly new connection between two well-studied combinatorial classes: rooted connected chord diagrams on one hand, and rooted bridgeless combinatorial maps on the other hand. We describe a bijection between these two classes, which naturally extends to indecomposable diagrams and general rooted maps. As an application, this bijection provides a simplifying framework for some technical quantum field theory work realized by some of the authors. Most notably, an important but technical parameter naturally translates to vertices at the level of maps. We also give a combinatorial proof to a formula which previously resulted from a technical recurrence, and with similar ideas we prove a conjecture of Hihn. Independently, we revisit an equation due to Arquès and Béraud for the generating function counting rooted maps with respect to edges and vertices, giving a new bijective interpretation of this equation directly on indecomposable chord diagrams, which moreover can be specialized to connected diagrams and refined to incorporate the number of crossings. Finally, we explain how these results have a simple application to the combinatorics of lambda calculus, verifying the conjecture that a certain natural family of lambda terms is equinumerous with bridgeless maps.

Abstract:This paper discusses a generalization of virtual knot theory that we call multi-virtual knot theory. Multi-virtual knot theory uses a multiplicity of types of virtual crossings. As we will explain, this multiplicity is motivated by the way it arises first in a graph-theoretic setting in relation to generalizing the Penrose evaluation for colorings of planar trivalent graphs to all trivalent graphs, and later by its uses in a virtual knot theory. As a consequence, the paper begins with the graph theory as a basis for our constructions, and then proceeds to the topology of multi-virtual knots and links. The second section of the paper is a review of our previous work (See <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1511.06844" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1511.06844">arXiv:1511.06844</a>). The reader interested in seeing our generalizations of the original Penrose evaluation, can begin this paper at the beginning and see the graph theory. A reader primarily interested in multi-virtual knots and links can begin reading in section 4 with references to the earlier part of the paper.

Abstract:An upper bound of the superbridge index of the connected sum of two knots is given in terms of the braid index of the summands. Using this upper bound and minimal polygonal presentations, we give an upper bound in terms of the superbridge index and the bridge index of the summands when they are torus knots. In contrast to the fact that the difference between the sum of bridge indices of two knots and the bridge index of their connected sum is always one, the corresponding difference for the superbridge index can be arbitrarily large.
