Abstract:In this paper, we give a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for real Finsler vector bundles with respect to any metric-compatible connection. The key idea is to modify any given metric-compatible connection to be a new metric-compatible connection with some special properties. As a corollary, a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for Finsler manifolds with respect to any metric-compatible connection is established.

Abstract:We describe an algebra of meromorphic functions on the Siegel domain of genus two which contains Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic index six subgroup of the symplectic group, which is closed under three canonical derivations of the Siegel domain. The main ingredients of our study are the moduli of enhanced genus two curves, Gauss-Manin connection and the modular vector fields living on such moduli spaces.

Abstract:We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We define formal Gauss-Manin connection matrices in the Aomoto complex and prove that, for all arrangements and all local systems, these formal connection matrices specialize to Gauss-Manin connection matrices.

Cartan calculi on the free loop spaces

Abstract:A typical example of a Cartan calculus consists of the Lie derivative and the contraction with vector fields of a manifold on the derivation ring of the de Rham complex. In this manuscript, a second stage of the Cartan calculus is investigated. In a general setting, the stage is formulated with operators obtained by the André-Quillen cohomology of a commutative differential graded algebra $A$ on the Hochschild homology of $A$ in terms of the homotopy Cartan calculus in the sense of Fiorenza and Kowalzig. Moreover, the Cartan calculus is interpreted geometrically with maps from the rational homotopy group of the monoid of self-homotopy equivalences on a space $M$ to the derivation ring on the loop cohomology of $M$. We also give a geometric description to Sullivan's isomorphism, which relates the geometric Cartan calculus to the algebraic one, via the $\Gamma_1$ map due to Félix and Thomas.

Characteristic forms of complex Cartan geometries II

Abstract:Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic Cartan geometry (for example, a holomorphic conformal structure or a holomorphic projective connection). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor by allowing noncompact and non-Kähler manifolds and by deriving invariants in cohomology of vector bundles, not just in scalar Dolbeault cohomology, and computing relations involving Chern--Simons invariants in Dolbeault cohomology. For the geometric structures previously considered in its predecessor, this paper gives stronger results and simplifies the computations. It gives the first results on Chern--Simons invariants of Cartan geometries.

Abstract:A natural generalization of a Lie algebra connection, or Yang-Mills field, to the case of a Lie-Kac superalgebra, for example SU(m/n), just in terms of ordinary complex functions and differentials, is proposed. Using the chirality χ which defines the supertrace of the superalgebra: STr (...) = Tr ( χ... ), we construct a covariant differential: D = χ ( d + A ) + Φ, where A is the standard even Lie-subalgebra connection 1-form and Φ a scalar field valued in the odd module. Despite the fact that Φ is a scalar, Φ anticommutes with ( χA ) because χ anticommutes with the odd generators hidden in Φ. Hence the curvature F = DD is a superalgebra-valued linear map which respects the Bianchi identity and correctly defines a chiral parallel transport compatible with a generic Lie superalgebra structure.

Abstract:We describe a Lie Algebra on the moduli space of non-rigid compact Calabi–Yau threefolds enhanced with differential forms and its relation to the Bershadsky–Cecotti–Ooguri–Vafa holomorphic anomaly equation. In particular, we describe algebraic topological string partition functions \({{\bf F}_{g}^{\rm alg}, g \geq 1}\), which encode the polynomial structure of holomorphic and non-holomorphic topological string partition functions. Our approach is based on Grothendieck’s algebraic de Rham cohomology and on the algebraic Gauss–Manin connection. In this way, we recover a result of Yamaguchi–Yau and Alim–Länge in an algebraic context. Our proofs use the fact that the special polynomial generators defined using the special geometry of deformation spaces of Calabi–Yau threefolds correspond to coordinates on such a moduli space. We discuss the mirror quintic as an example.

Abstract:The effective Hamiltonians for chiral supersymmetric gauge theories at small spatial volume are generalizations of the Hamiltonians describing the motion of a scalar or a spinor particle in a field of Dirac monopoles (we are dealing in fact with a certain lattice of monopoles supplemented with a periodic singular potential). The gauge fields in such Hamiltonians belong to the Cartan subalgebras of the corresponding gauge algebras. Such a construction exists for all groups admitting complex representations, i.e. for $SU(N \geq 3), \ Spin(4n+2)$ with $n \geq 1$ and $E_6$. We give explicit expressions for these Hamiltonians for $SU(3)$, $SU(4) \simeq Spin(6)$ and for $SU(5)$. The simplified version of such a Hamiltonian, deprived of fermion terms, of the extra scalar potential and when only one node of the lattice is taken into consideration, describe a $3r$-dimensional motion ($r$ being the rank of the group) in the field what we call a {\it Cartan monopole}. As is the case for the ordinary monopole, the Lagrangian of this system enjoys gauge symmetry, rotational symmetry, and the parameter, generalizing the notion of magnetic charge for Cartan monopoles, is quantized.

Abstract:We define a notion of a homotopy chiral algebra (HCA), which means a chiral algebra up to higher homotopies, and prove that the Cech complex of a sheaf of chiral algebras admits a structure of a HCA.

Abstract:We develop the generalized Cartan Calculus for the groups \( G=\mathrm{S}\mathrm{L}\left(2,\mathrm{\mathbb{R}}\right)\times {\mathrm{\mathbb{R}}}^{+},\mathrm{S}\mathrm{L}\left(5,\mathrm{\mathbb{R}}\right) \) and SO(5, 5). They are the underlying algebraic structures of d = 9, 7, 6 exceptional field theory, respectively. These algebraic identities are needed for the “tensor hierarchy” structure in exceptional field theory. The validity of Poincaré lemmas in this new differential geometry is also discussed. Finally we explore some possible extension of the generalized Cartan calculus beyond the exceptional series.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we investigate a Cartan calculus on the homology of free loop spaces which is introduced by Kuribayashi, Wakatsuki, Yamaguchi and the author. In particular, it is proved that the Cartan calculus can be described by the loop product and bracket in string topology. Moreover, by using the descriptions, we show that the loop product behaves well with respect to the Hodge decomposition of the homology of free loop spaces.

Abstract:We study chiral algebra in the reduction of 3D $\mathcal{N} = 2 $ supersymmetric gauge theories on an interval with the $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Dirichlet boundary conditions on both ends. By invoking the 3D ``twisted formalism'' and the 2D $\beta\gamma$-description we explicitly find the perturbative $\overline{Q}_+$ cohomology of the reduced theory. It is shown that the vertex algebras of boundary operators are enhanced by the line operators. A full non-perturbative result is found in the abelian case, where the chiral algebra is given by the rank two Narain lattice VOA, and two more equivalent descriptions are provided. Conjectures and speculations on the nonperturbative answer in the non-abelian case are also given.

Abstract:Classical two-dimensional Liouville gravity is often considered in conformal gauge which has a residual left and right Virasoro symmetry algebra. We consider an alternate, chiral, gauge which has a residual right Virasoro Kac-Moody algebra, and no left Virasoro algebra. The Kac-Moody zero mode is the left-moving energy. Dirac brackets of the constrained Hamiltonian theory are derived, and the residual symmetries are shown to be generated by integrals of the conserved chiral currents. The central charge and Kac-Moody level are computed. The possible existence of a corresponding quantum theory is discussed.

This work generalises some known results about simple semi-connections for complex vector bundle on compact complex manifold in real algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{X}=[X_1\rightrightarrows X_0]$ be a Lie groupoid equipped with a connection, given by a smooth distribution $\mathcal{H} \subset T X_1$ transversal to the fibers of the source map. Under the assumption that the distribution $\mathcal{H}$is integrable, we define a version of de Rham cohomology for the pair $(\mathbb{X}, \mathcal{H})$, and we study connections on principal $G$-bundles over $(\mathbb{X}, \mathcal{H})$ in terms of the associated Atiyah sequence of vector bundles. We also discuss associated constructions for differentiable stacks. Finally, we develop the corresponding Chern-Weil theory and describe characteristic classes of principal G-bundles over a pair $(\mathbb{X}, \mathcal{H})$.

Abstract:Motivated from target space covariant formulations of topological sigma models and from a graded-geometric approach to higher gauge theory, we study connections on Lie and Courant algebroids and on their description as differential graded (dg) manifolds. We revisit the notion of basic curvature for a connection on a Lie algebroid, which measures its compatibility with the Lie bracket and it appears in the BV-BRST differential of 2D gauge theories such as (twisted) Poisson and Dirac sigma models. We define a basic curvature tensor for connections on Courant algebroids and we show that in the description of a Courant algebroid as a QP2 manifold it appears naturally as part of the homological vector field together with the Gualtieri torsion of an induced generalised connection. Furthermore, we consider connections on dg manifolds and revisit the structure of gauge transformations in the graded-geometric approach to higher gauge theories from a manifestly covariant perspective. We argue that it is governed by the brackets of a Kapranov L algebra, whose binary bracket is given by the Atiyah cocycle that measures the compatibility of the connection with the homological vector field. We also revisit some aspects of the derived bracket construction and show how to extend it to connections and tensors.
