Abstract:We prove that for fixed $k$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and of minimum codegree at least $n/2+o(n)$ contains every spanning tight $k$-tree of bounded vertex degree as a sub\-graph. This generalises a well-known result of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi for graphs. Our result is asymptotically sharp. We also prove an extension of our result to hypergraphs that satisfy some weak quasirandomness conditions.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}(n,k)$ be the set of $k$-dimensional simplicial complexes $C$ over a fixed set of $n$ vertices such that: (1) $C$ has a complete $k-1$-skeleton; (2) $C$ has precisely ${{n-1}\choose {k}}$ $k$-faces; (3) the homology group $H_{k-1}(C)$ is finite. Consider the probability measure on $\mathcal{C}(n,k)$ where the probability of a simplicial complex $C$ is proportional to $|H_{k-1}(C)|^2$. For any fixed $k$, we determine the local weak limit of these random simplicial complexes as $n$ tends to infinity. This local weak limit turns out to be the same as the local weak limit of the $1$-out $k$-complexes investigated by Linial and Peled.

Abstract:Let $T_n$ be a $2$-dimensional determinantal hypertree on $n$ vertices. Kahle and Newman conjectured that the $p$-torsion of $H_1(T_n,\mathbb{Z})$ asymptotically follows the Cohen-Lenstra distribution. For $p=2$, we disprove this conjecture by showing that given a positive integer $h$, for all large enough $n$, we have \[\mathbb{P}(\dim H_1(T_n,\mathbb{F}_2)\ge h)\ge \frac{e^{-200h}}{(100h)^{5h}}.\] We also show that $T_n$ is a bad cosystolic expander with positive probability.

Abstract:We prove that if a compact $n$-manifold admits a sequence of residual covers that form a coboundary expander in dimension $n-2$, then the manifold has Gromov-hyperbolic fundamental group. In particular, residual sequences of covers of non-hyperbolic compact connected irreducible 3-manifolds are not 1-coboundary expanders.

Abstract:We survey some recent results on a space decomposition problem that has a close relationship to the size of algebraic decision trees. These results are obtained by establishing connections between the decomposition problem and some extremal questions in hypergraphs.Let d, n less-than-or-equal-to 1 be integers. A d-elementary cell is a set D in-set-of R-n defined by a finite set of constraints f(i)(x) = 0, g(j)(x) greater-than 0 where f(i), g(j) are polynomials of degrees not exceeding d. For any set S in-the-set-of R-n, let K-d(S) be the smallest number of disjoint d-elementary cells that S can be decomposed into. It is easy to see that any degree-d (ternary) algebraic decision tree for solving the membership question of S must have size no less than K-d(S). Thus, any lower bound to K-d(S) yields also a lower bound the size complexity for the corresponding membership problem.Let A(n) = {x(1), x(2), ... x(n)/ x(i) less-than-or-equal-to 0}. A well-known result of Rabin states that any algebraic decision tree for the membership question of A(n) must have height at least n. In this talk we discuss a recent result by Grigoriev, Karpinski and Yao [GKY], which gives an exponential lower bound to K-d(A(n)) for any fixed d, and hence to the size of any fixed degree (ternary) algebraic decision tree for solving this problem. The proof utilized a new connection between K-d(A(n)) and the maximum number of minimal cutsets for any rank-d hypergraph on n vertices. We also discuss an improved lower bound by Wigderson and Yao [WY]. Open questions are presented.

Abstract:Let $ a,b \in {\bf Z}^+$, $r=a + b$, and let $T$ be a tree with parts $U = \{u_1,u_2,\dots,u_s\}$ and $V = \{v_1,v_2,\dots,v_t\}$. Let $U_1, \dots ,U_s$ and $V_1, \dots, V_t$ be disjoint sets, such that {$|U_i|=a$ and $|V_j|=b$ for all $i,j$}. The {\em $(a,b)$-blowup} of $T$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph with edge set $ {\{U_i \cup V_j : u_iv_j \in E(T)\}.}$ We use the $\Delta$-systems method to prove the following Tur\' an-type result. Suppose $a,b,s \in {\bf Z}^+$, $r=a+b\geq 3$,{ $a\geq 2$,} and $T$ is a fixed tree of diameter $4$ in which the degree of the center vertex is $s $. Then there exists a $C=C(r,s ,T)>0$ such that $ |\mathcal{H}|\leq (s -1){n\choose r-1} +Cn^{r-2}$ for every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ {not containing an $(a,b)$-blowup of $T$}. This is {asymptotically exact} when $s \leq |V(T)|/2$. A stability result is also presented.

Coboundary and cosystolic expansion without dependence on dimension or degree

Abstract:We give new bounds on the cosystolic expansion constants of several families of high dimensional expanders, and the known coboundary expansion constants of order complexes of homogeneous geometric lattices, including the spherical building of $SL_n(F_q)$. The improvement applies to the high dimensional expanders constructed by Lubotzky, Samuels and Vishne, and by Kaufman and Oppenheim. Our new expansion constants do not depend on the degree of the complex nor on its dimension, nor on the group of coefficients. This implies improved bounds on Gromov's topological overlap constant, and on Dinur and Meshulam's cover stability, which may have applications for agreement testing. In comparison, existing bounds decay exponentially with the ambient dimension (for spherical buildings) and in addition decay linearly with the degree (for all known bounded-degree high dimensional expanders). Our results are based on several new techniques: * We develop a new "color-restriction" technique which enables proving dimension-free expansion by restricting a multi-partite complex to small random subsets of its color classes. * We give a new "spectral" proof for Evra and Kaufman's local-to-global theorem, deriving better bounds and getting rid of the dependence on the degree. This theorem bounds the cosystolic expansion of a complex using coboundary expansion and spectral expansion of the links. * We derive absolute bounds on the coboundary expansion of the spherical building (and any order complex of a homogeneous geometric lattice) by constructing a novel family of very short cones.

Topological expanders, coarse geometry and thick embeddings of complexes

Abstract:We quantify the topological expansion properties of bounded degree simplicial complexes in terms of a family of sublinear functions, in analogy with the separation profile of Benjamini-Schramm-Timár for classical expansion of bounded degree graphs. We prove that, like the separation profile, these new invariants are monotone under regular maps between complexes satisfying appropriate higher connectivity assumptions. In the dimension $1$ case, we recover the cutwidth profile of Huang-Hume-Kelly-Lam. We also prove the seemingly new result that any $1$-dimensional topological expander necessarily contains a graphical expander. In higher dimensions, we give full calculations of these new invariants for Euclidean spaces, which are natural analogues of waist and width-volume inequalities due to Gromov and Guth respectively. We present several other methods of obtaining upper bounds including naïve (yet useful) direct product and fibring theorems, and show how lower bounds can be obtained via thick embeddings of complexes, in analogy with previous work of Barrett-Hume. Using this, we find lower bounds for $k$-expansion of $(k+1)$-fold horocyclic products of trees, and for rank $k$ symmetric spaces of non-compact type. As a further application, we prove that for every $k\geq 2$ there is no coarse embedding (and more generally, no regular map) from the $k$-fold horocyclic product of $3$-regular trees to either any product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^{k-2}\times H \times D$ where $\mathbb{H}^2$ is the real hyperbolic plane, $H$ is a bounded degree hyperbolic graph and $D$ is a doubling metric space, or to any symmetric space whose non-compact factor has corank (dimension minus rank) is strictly less than $k$.

Abstract:We show that the Brownian continuum random tree is the Gromov–Hausdorff–Prohorov scaling limit of the uniform spanning tree on high-dimensional graphs including the d -dimensional torus with , the hypercube , and transitive expander graphs. Several corollaries for associated quantities are then deduced: convergence in distribution of the rescaled diameter, height and simple random walk on these uniform spanning trees to their continuum analogues on the continuum random tree.

On the boundedness of degenerate hypergraphs

Abstract:We investigate the impact of a high-degree vertex in Turán problems for degenerate hypergraphs (including graphs). We say an $r$-graph $F$ is bounded if there exist constants $\alpha, \beta>0$ such that for large $n$, every $n$-vertex $F$-free $r$-graph with a vertex of degree at least $\alpha \binom{n-1}{r-1}$ has fewer than $(1-\beta) \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ edges. The boundedness property is crucial for recent works~\cite{HHLLYZ23a,DHLY24} that aim to extend the classical Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem and the anti-Ramsey theorems of Erdős--Simonovits--Sós. We show that many well-studied degenerate hypergraphs, such as all even cycles, most complete bipartite graphs, and the expansion of most complete bipartite graphs, are bounded. In addition, to prove the boundedness of the expansion of complete bipartite graphs, we introduce and solve a Zarankiewicz-type problem for $3$-graphs, strengthening a theorem by Kostochka--Mubayi--Verstraëte~\cite{KMV15}.

Abstract:The $r$-expansion of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, denoted by $H^{(+r)}$, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained by enlarging each $k$-edge of $H$ with a set of $r-k$ vertices of degree one. The random Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(G^r_{n,p},H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G^r_{n,p}$, where $G^r_{n,p}$ is the Erdős-Rényi random $r$-graph with parameter $p$. In this paper, we prove an upper bound for $\mathrm{ex}(G^r_{n,p},H)$ when $H$ belongs to a large family of $r$-partite $r$-graphs: the $r$-expansion of spanning subgraphs of tight trees. This upper bound is essentially tight for at least the following two families of hypergraphs.

Abstract:We develop a probabilistic approach to the celebrated Jacobian conjecture, which states that any Keller map (i.e. any polynomial mapping $F\colon \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}^n$ whose Jacobian determinant is a nonzero constant) has a compositional inverse which is also a polynomial. The Jacobian conjecture may be formulated in terms of a problem involving labellings of rooted trees; we give a new probabilistic derivation of this formulation using multi-type branching processes. Thereafter, we develop a simple and novel approach to the Jacobian conjecture in terms of a problem involving shuffling subtrees of $d$-Catalan trees, i.e. planar $d$-ary trees. We also show that, if one can construct a certain Markov chain on large $d$-Catalan trees which updates its value by randomly shuffling certain nearby subtrees, and in such a way that the stationary distribution of this chain is uniform, then the Jacobian conjecture is true. Finally, we use the local limit theory of large random trees to show that the subtree shuffling conjecture is true in a certain asymptotic sense, and thereafter use our machinery to prove an approximate version of the Jacobian conjecture, stating that inverses of Keller maps have small power series coefficients for their high degree terms.

High-dimensional expanders from Kac--Moody--Steinberg groups

Abstract:High-dimensional expanders are a generalization of the notion of expander graphs to simplicial complexes and give rise to a variety of applications in computer science and other fields. We provide a general tool to construct families of bounded degree high-dimensional spectral expanders. Inspired by the work of Kaufman and Oppenheim, we use coset complexes over quotients of Kac-Moody-Steinberg groups of rank $d+1$, $d$-spherical and purely $d$-spherical. We prove that infinite families of such quotients exist provided that the underlying field is of size at least 4 and the Kac-Moody-Steinberg group is 2-spherical, giving rise to new families of bounded degree high-dimensional expanders. In the case the generalized Cartan matrix we consider is affine, we recover the construction of O'Donnell and Pratt from 2022, (and thus also the one of Kaufman and Oppenheim) by considering Chevalley groups as quotients of affine Kac-Moody-Steinberg groups. Moreover, our construction applies to the case where the root system is of type $\tilde{G}_2$, a case that was not covered in earlier works.

Abstract:We show that a randomly perturbed digraph, where we start with a dense digraph $D_\alpha$ and add a small number of random edges to it, will typically contain a fixed orientation of a bounded degree spanning tree. This answers a question posed by Araujo, Balogh, Krueger, Piga and Treglown and generalizes the corresponding result for randomly perturbed graphs by Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov. More specifically, we prove that there exists a constant $c = c(\alpha, \Delta)$ such that if $T$ is an oriented tree with maximum degree $\Delta$ and $D_\alpha$ is an $n$-vertex digraph with minimum semidegree $\alpha n$, then the graph obtained by adding $cn$ uniformly random edges to $D_\alpha$ will contain $T$ with high probability.

Sparsification of Phylogenetic Covariance Matrices of $k$-Regular Trees

Abstract:Consider a tree $T=(V,E)$ with root $\circ$ and edge length function $\ell:E\to\mathbb{R}_+$. The phylogenetic covariance matrix of $T$ is the matrix $C$ with rows and columns indexed by $L$, the leaf set of $T$, with entries $C(i,j):=\sum_{e\in[i\wedge j,o]}\ell(e)$, for each $i,j\in L$. Recent work [15] has shown that the phylogenetic covariance matrix of a large, random binary tree $T$ is significantly sparsified with overwhelmingly high probability under a change-of-basis with respect to the so-called Haar-like wavelets of $T$. This finding notably enables manipulating the spectrum of covariance matrices of large binary trees without the necessity to store them in computer memory but instead performing two post-order traversals of the tree. Building on the methods of [15], this manuscript further advances their sparsification result to encompass the broader class of $k$-regular trees, for any given $k\ge2$. This extension is achieved by refining existing asymptotic formulas for the mean and variance of the internal path length of random $k$-regular trees, utilizing hypergeometric function properties and identities.

Abstract:We present a version of the matrix-tree theorem, which relates the determinant of a matrix to sums of weights of arborescences of its directed graph representation. Our treatment allows for non-zero column sums in the parent matrix by adding a root vertex to the usually considered matrix directed graph. We use our result to prove a version of the matrix-forest, or all-minors, theorem, which relates minors of the matrix to forests of arborescences of the matrix digraph. We then show that it is possible, when the source and target vertices of an arc are not strongly connected, to move the source of the arc in the matrix directed graph and leave the resulting matrix determinant unchanged, as long as the source and target vertices are not strongly connected after the move. This result enables graphical strategies for factoring matrix determinants.
