Abstract:We quantify the topological expansion properties of bounded degree simplicial complexes in terms of a family of sublinear functions, in analogy with the separation profile of Benjamini-Schramm-Timár for classical expansion of bounded degree graphs. We prove that, like the separation profile, these new invariants are monotone under regular maps between complexes satisfying appropriate higher connectivity assumptions. In the dimension $1$ case, we recover the cutwidth profile of Huang-Hume-Kelly-Lam. We also prove the seemingly new result that any $1$-dimensional topological expander necessarily contains a graphical expander. In higher dimensions, we give full calculations of these new invariants for Euclidean spaces, which are natural analogues of waist and width-volume inequalities due to Gromov and Guth respectively. We present several other methods of obtaining upper bounds including naïve (yet useful) direct product and fibring theorems, and show how lower bounds can be obtained via thick embeddings of complexes, in analogy with previous work of Barrett-Hume. Using this, we find lower bounds for $k$-expansion of $(k+1)$-fold horocyclic products of trees, and for rank $k$ symmetric spaces of non-compact type. As a further application, we prove that for every $k\geq 2$ there is no coarse embedding (and more generally, no regular map) from the $k$-fold horocyclic product of $3$-regular trees to either any product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^{k-2}\times H \times D$ where $\mathbb{H}^2$ is the real hyperbolic plane, $H$ is a bounded degree hyperbolic graph and $D$ is a doubling metric space, or to any symmetric space whose non-compact factor has corank (dimension minus rank) is strictly less than $k$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to quantify and understand the properties of high - dimensional topological expanders, especially in the framework of coarse geometry. Specifically, the author introduces a new invariant to measure the degree to which a finite sub - complex is close to becoming a q - dimensional topological expander, and explores the behavior of these invariants in spaces of different dimensions. ### Main problems of the paper: 1. **Quantifying the properties of high - dimensional topological expanders**: The paper aims to quantify the topological expansion properties of bounded - degree simplicial complexes by defining a series of sub - linear functions, similar to the separation profile of Benjamini - Schramm - Timár for classical graph expansion. 2. **Studying the monotonicity and applications of new invariants**: The author proves that these new invariants are monotonic for regular maps between simplicial complexes under appropriate high - connectivity assumptions. In addition, the specific calculations of these invariants in Euclidean space and other specific spaces are also explored. 3. **Exploring properties in the low - dimensional case**: In the 1 - dimensional case, the author recovers the cut - width profile of Huang - Hume - Kelly - Lam and proves that any 1 - dimensional topological expander must contain a graph expander. 4. **Specific calculations in the high - dimensional case**: The author calculates in detail the values of these new invariants in Euclidean space and gives several other methods for obtaining upper bounds, including the direct product theorem and the fibration theorem. 5. **Coarse embedding and low - dimensional restrictions**: The author finds the lower bound of \( k \)-expansion through coarse embedding techniques and proves that certain types of coarse embeddings do not exist. ### Key formulas and concepts: - **Sub - linear function \( sTO^q_X(r) \)**: It is used to measure the degree to which a finite sub - complex of a given bounded - degree simplicial complex \( X \) is close to becoming a \( q \)-dimensional topological expander. Specifically, it is defined as: \[ sTO^q_X(r) \leq k \quad \text{if each sub - complex } Z \text{ with } r \text{ 0 - simplices can be continuously mapped to } \mathbb{R}^q \text{ such that the pre - image of each point intersects at most } k \text{ simplices} \] - **Monotonicity theorem**: For bounded - degree simplicial complexes \( X \) and \( Y \), if there is a regular map \( X^0 \to Y^0 \), then for all \( q \geq 1 \): \[ sTO^q_X(r) \lesssim sTO^q_Y(r) \] - **Specific calculations in Euclidean space**: For \( 1 \leq q < n \), we have: \[ TO^q_{\mathbb{R}^n}(r) \simeq r^{1-\frac{q}{n}} \] For \( q \geq n \), we have: \[ TO^q_{\mathbb{R}^n}(r) \simeq 1 \] Through the research of these problems, the author not only expands the application range of graph expander theory, but also establishes an important connection between coarse geometry and high - dimensional topological expanders.
