Abstract:A lattice QCD calculation for the four-gluon one-particle irreducible Green function in the Landau gauge is discussed. Results for some of the associated form factors are reported for kinematical configurations with a single momentum scale. Our results show that the computation of this Green function requires large statistical ensembles with 10 K or larger number of gauge configurations. The simulations considered herein have a clear Monte Carlo signal for momenta up to ∼1 GeV . The form factors show an hierarchy, with the form factor associated with the tree level Feynman rule being dominant and essentially constant for the range of momenta accessed. The remaining form factors seem to increase as the momentum decreases, suggesting that a possible log divergence may occur. Abstract:To date, the four-gluon vertex is the least explored component of the QCD Lagrangian, mainly due to the vast proliferation of Lorentz and color structures required for its description. In this work we present a nonperturbative study of this vertex, based on the one-loop dressed Schwinger-Dyson equation obtained from the 4PI effective action. A vast simplification is brought about by resorting to ``collinear'' kinematics, where all momenta are parallel to each other, and by appealing to the charge conjugation symmetry in order to eliminate certain color structures. Out of the fifteen form factors that comprise the transversely-projected version of this vertex, two are singled out and studied in detail; the one associated with the classical tensorial structure is moderately suppressed in the infrared regime, while the other diverges logarithmically at the origin. Quite interestingly, both form factors display the property known as ``planar degeneracy'' at a rather high level of accuracy. With these results we construct an effective charge that quantifies the strength of the four-gluon interaction, and compare it with other vertex-derived charges from the gauge sector of QCD.

Abstract:Several continuum and lattice investigations of the QCD three-gluon vertex have recently exposed its key properties, some intimately connected with the low-momentum behavior of the two-point gluon Green's function and specially relevant for the emergence of a mass scale in this latter, via the Schwinger mechanism. In the present study, we report on a lattice determination of the Landau-gauge, transversely projected three-gluon vertex, particularly scrutinizing an outstanding one of these properties, termed planar degeneracy, exploring its implications and capitalizing on it to gain further insight on the low-momentum running of both the three-gluon vertex and its associated strong coupling.

Nonperturbative four-gluon vertex in soft kinematics

Abstract:We present a nonperturbative study of the form factor associated with the projection of the full four-gluon vertex on its classical tensor, for a set of kinematics with one vanishing and three arbitrary external momenta. The treatment is based on the Schwinger-Dyson equation governing this vertex, and a large-volume lattice simulation, involving ten thousand gauge field configurations. The key hypothesis employed in both approaches is the ``planar degeneracy'', which classifies diverse configurations by means of a single variable, thus enabling their meaningful ``averaging''. The results of both approaches show notable agreement, revealing a considerable suppression of the averaged form factor in the infrared. The deviations from the exact planar degeneracy are discussed in detail, and a supplementary variable is used to achieve a more accurate description. The effective charge defined through this special form factor is computed within both approaches, and the results obtained are in excellent agreement.

Abstract:We report on recent numerical computations of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators as well as of the ghost-gluon vertex function in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory and in full QCD on the lattice. Special emphasis is paid to the low momentum region. In particular, we present new data for the gluon propagator at momenta below 300 MeV. We also discuss different systematic effects as there are finite-size, lattice discretization and Gribov copy but also unquenching effects. A MOM-scheme running coupling \alpha_s(q^2) based on the ghost-gluon vertex is calculated and found to decrease for momenta below 550 MeV, even though the renormalization constant of the vertex deviates only weakly from being constant.

Infrared properties of the quark-gluon vertex in general kinematics

Abstract:In the present work we determine the eight form factors of the transversely-projected quark-gluon vertex in general kinematics, in the context of Landau-gauge QCD with two degenerate light dynamical quarks. The study is based on the set of Schwinger-Dyson equations that govern the vertex form factors, derived within the formalism of the three-particle-irreducible (3PI) effective action. The analysis is performed by employing lattice data for the main ingredients, such as gluon and quark propagators, and three-gluon vertex. The numerical treatment is simplified by decoupling the system of integral equations: the classical form factor is determined from a single non-linear equation involving only itself, while the remaining ones are subsequently computed through simple integrations. The form factors are obtained for arbitrary values of space-like momenta, and their angular dependence is examined in detail. A clear hierarchy is established at the level of the corresponding dimensionless effective couplings, in agreement with results of earlier studies. Furthermore, the classical form factor is found to be in excellent agreement with recent unquenched lattice data in the soft-gluon configuration, while the two non-classical dressings depart substantially from the lattice results. Finally, the accurate implementation of multiplicative renormalizability is confirmed, and the transition from Minkoswski to Euclidean space is elucidated.

The center-symmetric Landau gauge meets the lattice

Abstract:A lattice implementation of the recently introduced center-symmetric Landau gauge is discussed and its predictions confronted with numerical Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the link average and the link correlators computed in that gauge are order parameters of the confinement-deconfinement transition at nonzero temperature. Strictly speaking, this requires a specific treatment of the Gribov copies that we discuss in detail. The numerical simulations comply with the theoretical predictions for the link average computed below and above the deconfinement temperature. Our results show that, within appropriately chosen gauges, one can construct local order parameters for center symmetry, as proxies for the non-local Polyakov loop.

Abstract:Lattice results for the gluon propagator in SU(2) pure gauge theory obtained on large lattices are presented. Simulated annealing is used throughout to fix the Landau gauge. We concentrate on checks for Gribov copy effects and for scaling properties. Our findings are similar to the ones in the SU(3) case, supporting the decoupling-type infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator.

Abstract:Correlation functions are important probes for the behavior of quantum field theories. Already at tree-level, the refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) effective action for Yang-Mills theories provides a good approximation for the gluon propagator, as compared to that calculated by nonperturbative methods such as lattice field theory and Dyson-Schwinger equations. However, the study of higher correlation functions of the RGZ theory is still at its beginning. In this work we evaluate the ghost-gluon vertex function in Landau gauge at one-loop level, in d=4 space-time dimensions for the gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3). More precisely, we extend the analysis conducted in [1] for the soft-gluon limit to an arbitrary kinematic configuration. We introduce renormalization group effects by means of a toy model for the running coupling and investigate the impact of such a model in the ultraviolet tails of our results. We find that RGZ results match fairly closely those from lattice simulations, Schwinger-Dyson equations and the Curci-Ferrari model for three different kinematic configurations. Perturbative analysis of the three gluon vertex in different gauges at one-loop

Abstract:In this study, we present a perturbative analysis of the three-gluon vertex for a kinematical symmetric configuration in dimension $n=4-2\epsilon$ and different covariant gauges.Our study can describe the form factors of the three gluon vertex in a wide range of momentum. We employ a momentum subtraction (MOM) scheme to define the renormalized vertex. We give an in-depth review of three commonly used vector basis for the vertex, and explicitly show the expressions to change from one basis to the other. Although our estimates are valid only in the perturbative regime, we extend our numerical predictions to the infrared domain and show that in $n=4$ some nonperturbative properties are qualitatively present already at perturbation theory. In particular, we find a critical gauge above which the leading form factor displays the so-called zero crossing. We contrast our findings to those of other models and observe a fairly good agreement.

Abstract:Lattice tensor representations are used to investigate the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator for the 4-dimensional pure SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory. Due to the different symmetry structure of hypercubic lattices compared to the continuum space-time, lattice correlation functions are described by different tensor structures. Therefore, form factors describing lattice correlation functions have, in principle, non-trivial relations with the continuum counterparts. The use of several tensor bases respecting lattice symmetries, and the analysis of its completeness allows to quantify the deviations of the lattice results from the continuum theory, and also estimate the theoretical uncertainty in the propagator. Furthermore, our analysis tests continuum based relations with the lattice data and shows that the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator is suitably described by a unique form factor, as in the continuum formulation. Additionally, we identified classes of kinematic configurations where these deviations are minimal and the continuum description of lattice tensors is improved.

Abstract:The properties of the momentum space quark propagator in Landau gauge and Gribov copy free Laplacian gauge are studied for the overlap quark action in quenched lattice QCD. Numerical calculations are done on two lattices with different lattice spacing a and the same physical volume. We have calculated the nonperturbative wave function renormalization function Z(q) and the nonperturbative mass function M(p) for a variety of bare quark masses and perform a simple linear extrapolation to the chiral limit. We focus on the comparison of the behavior of Z(q) and M(p) in the chiral limit in the two gauge fixing schemes as well as the behavior on two lattices with different lattice spacing a. We find that the mass functions M(p) are very similar for the two gauges while the wave-function renormalization function Z(q) is more strongly infrared suppressed in the Laplacian gauge than in the Landau gauge on the finer lattice. For Laplacian gauge, it seems that the finite a error is large on the coarse lattice which has a lattice spacing a of about 0.124 fm.
On the dependence of the Landau gauge ghost-gluon-vertex on the number of flavors

Abstract:The gauge-boson, ghost and fermion propagators as well as the gauge-boson--ghost vertex function are studied for SU(N), Sp(2N) and SO(N) gauge groups. We solve a set of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations in Landau gauge for a variable, fractional number $N_f$ of massless fermions in the fundamental representation. For large $N_f$ we find a phase transition from a chirally broken into a chirally symmetric phase that is consistent with the behavior expected inside the conformal window. Even in the presence of fermions the gauge-boson--ghost-vertex dressing remains small. In the conformal window this vertex shows the expected power law behavior. It does not assume its tree-level value in the far infrared, but the respective dressing function is a constant greater than one.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the Landau gauge ghost propagator is investigated in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory with lattice QCD simulations. Its behavior around the confined-deconfined phase transition temperature, T c ∼ 270 MeV, is investigated. The simulations show that in the deconfined phase, the ghost propagator is enhanced for small momenta, ≲ 1 GeV. Furthermore, the analysis of the spontaneous breaking of center symmetry on the ghost propagator is studied. Similarly as observed for the gluon propagator, the simulations result in a decoupling of the sectors where the phase of the Polyakov loop is either 0 or ±2 π /3 sectors, with the latter remaining indistinguishable. The results point to the possible use of the ghost propagator as an "order parameter" for the confined-deconfined phase transition.

Abstract:The quark-gluon vertex is an important object of QCD. Studies have shown that this quantity is relevant for the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking pattern in the vacuum. The goal of our project is to obtain the quark-gluon vertex at finite temperature around the deconfinement/chiral transition using the tools provided by lattice QCD. It will be the first time that the quark-gluon vertex at finite temperature is determined using lattice QCD. The propagators, which are a by-product of this project, are also of interest in themselves. The configurations used were generated by the FASTSUM collaboration. In this contribution, we describe our motivations and goals, some technical details of the determination and report on the status of the calculation.
