Abstract:We use an equivariant version of the localization formula of Jeffrey and Kirwan to prove a formula for virtual invariants $(\text{DT}$, $\chi_y$, $\text{Ell})$ of critical loci in quotients of linear spaces by actions of reductive algebraic groups. In particular we recover formulae for the invariants of critical loci of potentials in moduli spaces of quiver representations predicted by physicists.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to prove a formula for virtual invariants (such as Donaldson - Thomas invariants, virtual Hirzebruch genus and virtual chiral elliptic genus) of critical points in the quotient of linear spaces by using an equivariant version of Jeffrey and Kirwan's localization formula. Specifically, the paper focuses on the (C\(^*\)-equivariant) virtual invariants of critical points in the quotient of linear spaces under the action of a reductive algebraic group, and these invariants are equipped with a standard perfect obstruction theory. In particular, the paper recovers the invariant formula for critical points of the potential function in the moduli space of quiver representations predicted by physicists. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Calculation of virtual invariants**: - The main objective of the paper is to provide a method for calculating the virtual invariants of critical points in the quotient of linear spaces. These invariants include Donaldson - Thomas invariants, virtual Hirzebruch genus and virtual chiral elliptic genus. 2. **Application of Jeffrey - Kirwan localization formula**: - The author uses an equivariant version of Jeffrey and Kirwan's localization formula to transform the global integration problem into a problem of local fixed - point data. This makes the calculation more feasible and accurate. 3. **Bridge between physics and mathematics**: - The paper aims to place the results of calculating physical quantities through supersymmetric localization in physics on a strict mathematical foundation. In particular, the paper explains how to rigorously mathematize quantities such as the elliptic genus calculated by physicists in two - dimensional gauge theory. ### Formulas and methods The key to the paper lies in using the Jeffrey - Kirwan localization formula to calculate virtual invariants. The specific steps are as follows: 1. **Define key objects**: - Consider a reductive group \(G\) acting on a linear space \(V\). - Select a linearization \(\xi\) such that the quotient space \(A = V//G\) is a smooth orbifold. - Define a \(C^*\) action on \(V\) and make it descend to \(A\) such that \(A^{C^*}\) is compact. - Define a potential function \(\phi: A\rightarrow\mathbb{C}\), and its critical point set \(X = \text{Crit}(\phi)\) is equipped with a standard perfect obstruction theory. 2. **Calculate virtual invariants**: - Use the Jeffrey - Kirwan localization formula to express the virtual invariants as the sum of Jeffrey - Kirwan residues of certain specific functions. For example, the Donaldson - Thomas invariant \(\text{DT}\) can be expressed as: \[ \text{DT}=\frac{1}{|W|}\sum_{P\in M_\xi}\text{JK}_{W_P}\left(\frac{Z_s}{\tilde{\xi}}\right), \] where \(W\) is the Weyl group of \(G\), \(M_\xi\) is the set of stable isolated intersections, \(Z_s\) is a certain specific rational function, and \(\tilde{\xi}\) is a small perturbation of \(\xi\). 3. **Specific examples**: - The paper also provides specific examples, such as the classical invariants of complete intersections, the virtual invariants of Calabi - Yau 3 - folds in \(G(2, 4)\), etc., demonstrating the practical application of the formula. ### Conclusion Through strict mathematical methods, the paper successfully rigorizes the invariant formulas calculated by physicists in supersymmetric theory and provides an effective method for calculating the virtual invariants of critical points in the quotient of linear spaces. This not only deepens our understanding of these invariants but also provides a powerful tool for further research.
