Abstract:If $X$ is a singular del Pezzo surface of degree $d$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ with only rational double point singularities, does there always exist a smooth $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point on $X$? We show that this is true for $d\geq 3$ and give counterexamples in the case of $d=2$.

Abstract:Previous work of the authors showed that every quartic del Pezzo surface over a number field has index dividing $2$, and asked whether such surfaces always have a closed point of degree $2$. We resolve this by constructing infinitely many quartic del Pezzo surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ without degree $2$ points. These are the first examples of smooth intersections of two quadrics with index strictly less than the minimal degree of a closed point.

Abstract:In this paper we study the problem of existence of orbifold Kaehler-Einstein metrics on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 with Du Val singular points. Moreover we compute global log canonical thresholds of del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 with Du Val singularities and of del Pezzo surfaces of Picard rank 1 with Du Val singularities.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.

Abstract:Let $r$ be a positive divisor of $q-1$ and $f(x,y)$ a rational function of degree sum $d$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with some restrictions, where the degree sum of a rational function $f(x,y) = f_1(x,y)/f_2(x,y)$ is the sum of the degrees of $f_1(x,y)$ and $f_2(x,y)$. In this article, we discuss the existence of triples $(\alpha, \beta, f(\alpha, \beta))$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $\alpha, \beta$ are primitive and $f(\alpha, \beta)$ is an $r$-primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, this implies the existence of $\mathbb{F}_q$-primitive points on the surfaces of the form $z^r = f(x,y)$. As an example, we apply our results on the unit sphere over $\mathbb{F}_q$.

Abstract:We prove that for a Q-Gorenstein degeneration $X$ of del Pezzo surfaces, the number of non-Du Val singularities is at most $\rho(X)+2$. Degenerations with $\rho(X)+2$ and $\rho(X)+1$ non-Du Val points are investigated.

Abstract:For each del Pezzo surface $S$ with du Val singularities, we determine whether it admits a $(-K_S)$-polar cylinder or not. If it allows one, then we present an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $D$ that is $\mathbb{Q}$-linearly equivalent to $-K_S$ and such that the open set $S\setminus\mathrm{Supp}(D)$ is a cylinder. As a corollary, we classify all the del Pezzo surfaces with du Val singularities that admit nontrivial $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions on their affine cones defined by their anticanonical divisors.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of singular del Pezzo surfaces with Zariski dense exceptional sets in Manin's conjecture, varying in degrees $1, 2$ and $3$. These examples arise from quasi-étale covers with higher $b$-invariants. We classify all quasi-étale covers of Du Val del Pezzo surfaces up to singularity types, extending earlier works of Miyanishi-Zhang. Then, we identify all potential examples by studying group actions on the pseudo-effective cones, and show that no such example exists in degree $\geq4$. Finally, we prove that Manin's conjecture with proper closed exceptional sets fails for specific examples, for which we also determine the conjectural exceptional set proposed by Lehmann-Sengupta-Tanimoto.

Abstract:We classify geometrically integral regular del Pezzo surfaces which are not geometrically normal over imperfect fields of positive characteristic. Based on this classification, we show that a three-dimensional terminal del Pezzo fibration onto a curve over an algebraically closed field always admits a section. Moreover, we prove that the total space is rational if the base curve is rational and the anticanonical degree of a fibre is at least five.

Abstract:We study intersections of exceptional curves on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1, motivated by questions in arithmetic geometry. Outside characteristics 2 and 3, at most 10 exceptional curves can intersect in a point. We classify the different ways in which 10 exceptional curves can intersect, construct a new families of surfaces with 10 exceptional curves intersecting in a point, and discuss strategies for finding more such examples.

Abstract:Let $(X,D)$ be an open log del Pezzo surface of rank one, that is, $X$ is a normal projective surface of Picard rank one, and the boundary $D$ is a reduced, nonzero divisor on $X$. We show that, up to well described exceptions in characteristics 2, 3 and 5, the open part $X\setminus D$ admits an $\mathbb{A}^1$- or $\mathbb{A}^1_*$-fibration with no base points on the boundary of the minimal log resolution of $(X,D)$. In characteristic 0, this improves a well-known structure theorem of Miyanishi-Tsunoda. Within the proof, we classify rational anti-canonical curves contained in smooth loci of canonical del Pezzo surfaces of rank one.

Abstract:We show first that a generic hypersurface $V$ of degree $d\geq 3$ in the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ has at least one hyperplane section $V \cap H$ containing exactly $n$ ordinary double points, alias $A_1$ singularities, in general position, and no other singularities. Equivalently, the dual hypersurface $V^{\vee}$ has at least one normal crossing singularity of multiplicity $n$. Using this result, we show that the dual of any smooth hypersurface with $n,d \geq 3$ has at least a very singular point $q$, in particular a point $q$ of multiplicity $\geq n$.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2 over a field satisfy weak weak approximation if is a number field and the Hilbert property if is Hilbertian of characteristic zero, provided that they contain a ‐rational point lying neither on any 4 of the 56 exceptional curves nor on the ramification divisor of the anticanonical morphism. This builds upon results of Manin, Salgado–Testa–Várilly‐Alvarado, and Festi–van Luijk on the unirationality of such surfaces, and upon work of the first two authors verifying weak weak approximation under the assumption of a conic fibration.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.

Abstract:We classify all log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one defined over algebraically closed fields of characteristic different from two and three. We also discuss some consequences of the classification. For example, we show that log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one defined over algebraically closed fields of characteristic larger than five admit a log resolution that lifts to characteristic zero over a smooth base.
