Abstract:We study surjective (not necessarily regular) rational endomorphisms $f$ of smooth del Pezzo surfaces $X$. We prove that $f$ can have degree bigger than $1$ only when $(-K_X^2) > 5$. Some structural properties of $f$ in the case $X = \mathbb{P}^2$ are also established.

Abstract:Let $f:X\to X$ be a non-isomorphic (i.e., $\text{deg } f>1$) surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold $X$. We prove that any birational minimal model program becomes $f$-equivariant after iteration, provided that $f$ is $\delta$-primitive. Here $\delta$-primitive means that there is no $f$-equivariant (after iteration) dominant rational map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$ to a positive lower-dimensional projective variety $Y$ such that the first dynamical degree remains unchanged. This way, we further determine the building blocks of $f$. As the first application, we prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for every non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold. As the second application, we reduce the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for $f$ to a terminal threefold with only $f$-equivariant Fano contractions.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.

Abstract:Let $(X,D)$ be an open log del Pezzo surface of rank one, that is, $X$ is a normal projective surface of Picard rank one, and the boundary $D$ is a reduced, nonzero divisor on $X$. We show that, up to well described exceptions in characteristics 2, 3 and 5, the open part $X\setminus D$ admits an $\mathbb{A}^1$- or $\mathbb{A}^1_*$-fibration with no base points on the boundary of the minimal log resolution of $(X,D)$. In characteristic 0, this improves a well-known structure theorem of Miyanishi-Tsunoda. Within the proof, we classify rational anti-canonical curves contained in smooth loci of canonical del Pezzo surfaces of rank one.

Rational maps with smooth degenerate Herman rings

Abstract:We prove the existence of rational maps having smooth degenerate Herman rings. This answers a question of Eremenko affirmatively. The proof is based on the construction of smooth Siegel disks by Avila, Buff and Chéritat as well as the classical Siegel-to-Herman quasiconformal surgery. A crucial ingredient in the proof is the surgery's continuity, which relies on the control of the loss of the area of quadratic filled-in Julia sets by Buff and Chéritat. As a by-product, we prove the existence of rational maps having a nowhere dense Julia set of positive area for which these maps have no irrationally indifferent periodic points, no Herman rings, and are not renormalizable.

A relative orientation for the moduli space of stable maps to a del Pezzo surface

Abstract:We prove orientation results for evaluation maps of moduli spaces of rational stable maps to del Pezzo surfaces over a field, both in characteristic $0$ and in positive characteristic. These results and the theory of degree developed in a sequel produce quadratically enriched counts of rational curves over non-algebraically closed fields of characteristic not $2$ or $3$. Orientations are constructed in two steps. First, the ramification locus of the evaluation map is shown to be the divisor in the moduli space of stable maps where image curves have a cusp. Second, this divisor is related to the discriminant of a branched cover of the moduli space given generically by pairs of points on the universal curve with the same image.

Abstract:A variety X with an action of a finite group G is said to be G-unirational if there is a G-equivariant dominant rational map V -> X where V is a faithful linear representation of G. This generalizes the usual notion of unirationality. We determine when X is G-unirational for any complex del Pezzo surface X of degree at least 3.

Abstract:We prove that the group of birational transformations of a Del Pezzo fibration of degree 3 over a curve is not simple, by giving a surjective group homomorphism to a free product of infinitely many groups of order 2. As a consequence we also obtain that the Cremona group of rank 3 is not generated by birational maps preserving a rational fibration. Besides, its subgroup generated by all connected algebraic subgroups is a proper normal subgroup.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a rational map of degree $d\geq 2$. The moduli space $\mathcal{M}_f$, introduced by McMullen and Sullivan, is a complex analytic space consisting all quasiconformal conjugacy classes of $f$. For $f$ that is not flexible Lattès, we show that there is a normal affine variety $X_f$ of dimension $2d-2$ and a holomorphic injection $i:\mathcal{M}_f\to X_f$ such that $i(\mathcal{M}_f)$ is precompact in $X_f$. In particular $\mathcal{M}_f$ is Carathéodory hyperbolic (i.e. bounded holomorphic functions separate points in $\mathcal{M}_f$), provided that $f$ is not flexible Lattès. This solves a conjecture of McMullen. When $d\geq 4$, we give a concrete construction of $X_f$ as the normalization of the Zariski closure of the image of the reciprocal multiplier spectrum morphism.

Abstract:We classify geometrically integral regular del Pezzo surfaces which are not geometrically normal over imperfect fields of positive characteristic. Based on this classification, we show that a three-dimensional terminal del Pezzo fibration onto a curve over an algebraically closed field always admits a section. Moreover, we prove that the total space is rational if the base curve is rational and the anticanonical degree of a fibre is at least five.

Abstract:Let $\{F_n, n\ge 8\}$ be a family of diffeomorphisms on real rational surfaces that are birationally equivalent to birational maps on $\mathbf{P}^2(\mathbb{R})$. In this article, we investigate the mapping classes of the diffeomorphisms $F_n, n\ge 8$. These diffeomorphisms are reducible with unique invariant irreducible curves, and we determine the mapping classes of their restrictions, $\hat F_n, n \ge 8$, on the cut surfaces, showing that they are pseudo-Anosov and do not arise from Penner's construction. For $n=8$, Lehmer's number is realized as the stretch factor of $\hat F_8$, a pseudo-Anosov map on a once-punctured genus $5$ orientable surface. The diffeomorphism $\hat F_8$ is a new geometric realization of a Lehmer's number.

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1008.3825" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1008.3825">arXiv:1008.3825</a>, Totaro gave examples of a K3 surface such that its automorphism group is not commensurable with an arithmetic group, answering a question of Mazur. We give examples of rational surfaces with the same property. Our examples $Y$ are Looijenga pairs, i.e., there is a connected singular nodal curve $D \subset Y$ such that $K_{Y} + D = 0$.

Abstract:If $X$ is a singular del Pezzo surface of degree $d$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ with only rational double point singularities, does there always exist a smooth $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point on $X$? We show that this is true for $d\geq 3$ and give counterexamples in the case of $d=2$.

Abstract:We show that a very general hypersurface of degree d at least 4 and dimension at most $(d+1)2^{d-4}$ over a field of characteristic different from 2 does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal; hence, it is neither stably nor retract rational, nor $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Similar results hold in characteristic 2 under a slightly weaker degree bound. This improves earlier results by the second named author and Moe.

Abstract:We develop a steady-state analytical and numerical model of the optical response of power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson laser gravitational-wave detectors to thermal focusing in optical substrates. We assume that the thermal distortions are small enough that we can represent the unperturbed intracavity field anywhere in the detector as a linear combination of basis functions related to the eigenmodes of one of the Fabry-Perot arm cavities, and we take great care to preserve numerically the nearly ideal longitudinal phase resonance conditions that would otherwise be provided by an external servo-locking control system. We have included the effects of nonlinear thermal focusing due to power absorption in both the substrates and coatings of the mirrors and beamsplitter, the effects of a finite mismatch between the curvatures of the laser wavefront and the mirror surface, and the diffraction by the mirror aperture at each instance of reflection and transmission. We demonstrate a detailed numerical example of this model using the MATLAB program Melody for the initial LIGO detector in the Hermite-Gauss basis, and compare the resulting computations of intracavity fields in two special cases with those of a fast Fourier transform field propagation model. Additional systematic perturbations (e.g., mirror tilt, thermoelastic surface deformations, and other optical imperfections) can be included easily by incorporating the appropriate operators into the transfer matrices describing reflection and transmission for the mirrors and beamsplitter.

Abstract:We study rationality questions for Fano schemes of linear spaces on smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, especially over non-closed fields. Our approach is to study hyperbolic reductions of the pencil of quadrics associated to $X$. We prove that the Fano schemes $F_r(X)$ of $r$-planes are birational to symmetric powers of hyperbolic reductions, generalizing results of Reid and Colliot-Th\'el\`ene--Sansuc--Swinnerton-Dyer, and we give several applications to rationality properties of $F_r(X)$. For instance, we show that if $X$ contains an $(r+1)$-plane over a field $k$, then $F_r(X)$ is rational over $k$. When $X$ has odd dimension, we show a partial converse for rationality of the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces, generalizing results of Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. When $X$ has even dimension, the analogous result does not hold, and we further investigate this situation over the real numbers. In particular, we prove a rationality criterion for the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces on these even-dimensional complete intersections over $\mathbb R$; this may be viewed as extending work of Hassett--Koll\'ar--Tschinkel.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a rationally connected smooth projective variety of dimension $n$. We show that $X$ is a toric variety if and only if $X$ admits an int-amplified endomorphism with totally invariant ramification divisor. We also show that $X\cong (\mathbb{P}^1)^{\times n}$ if and only if $X$ admits a surjective endomorphism $f$ such that the eigenvalues of $f^*|_{\text{N}^1(X)}$ (without counting multiplicities) are $n$ distinct real numbers greater than $1$.

Abstract:We undertake a study of topological properties of the real Mordell-Weil group $\operatorname{MW}_{\mathbb R}$ of real rational elliptic surfaces $X$ which we accompany by a related study of real lines on $X$ and on the "subordinate" del Pezzo surfaces $Y$ of degree 1. We give an explicit description of isotopy types of real lines on $Y_{\mathbb R}$ and an explicit presentation of $\operatorname{MW}_{\mathbb R}$ in the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}(X_{\mathbb R})$. Combining these results we establish an explicit formula for the action of $\operatorname{MW}_{\mathbb R}$ in $H_1(X_{\mathbb R})$.

Abstract:We prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture (KSC), about the equality of arithmetic degree and dynamical degree, for every surjective endomorphism of any (possibly singular) projective surface. In high dimensions, we show that KSC holds for every surjective endomorphism of any $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Kawamata log terminal projective variety admitting an int-amplified endomorphism, provided that KSC holds for any surjective endomorphism with the ramification divisor being totally invariant and irreducible. In particular, we show that KSC holds for every surjective endomorphism of any rationally connected smooth projective threefold admitting an int-amplified endomorphism. The main ingredients are the equivariant minimal model program, the effectiveness of the anti-canonical divisor and a characterization of toric pairs.
