Abstract:The anomalous $\lambda$-transition of liquid sulfur, which is supposed to be related to the transformation of eight-membered sulfur rings into long polymeric chains, has attracted considerable attention. However, a detailed description of the underlying dynamical polymerization process is still missing. Here, we study the structures and the mechanism of the polymerization processes of liquid sulfur across the $\lambda$-transition as well as its reverse process of formation of the rings. We do so by performing ab-initio-quality molecular dynamics simulations thanks to a combination of machine learning potentials and state-of-the-art enhanced sampling techniques. With our approach, we obtain structural results that are in good agreement with the experiments and we report precious dynamical insights into the mechanisms involved in the process.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily addresses the issue of structural changes and polymerization mechanisms of liquid sulfur during the λ-transition. Specifically, the study focuses on the transition of liquid sulfur from an eight-membered ring structure (S8) to long-chain polymers and its reverse process (i.e., the formation of cyclic structures). The core issues addressed in the paper are as follows: 1. **Detailed description of the polymerization process**: Although there have been many studies on the anomalous behavior of liquid sulfur during the λ-transition, a detailed description of the dynamic polymerization process behind the transition is still lacking. This paper attempts to fill this gap. 2. **Development of simulation techniques**: To better understand this transition process, the authors developed a method that combines machine learning potentials and advanced enhanced sampling techniques to achieve molecular dynamics simulations with near first-principles quality. This method allows for the simulation of nanosecond-scale dynamics of systems with thousands of atoms. 3. **Study of structure and polymerization mechanisms**: Using the aforementioned method, the researchers studied the structural characteristics of liquid sulfur across the λ-transition and the mechanisms of polymerization and depolymerization. Through long-term reactive simulations, they were able to describe the relevant reaction mechanisms for the formation and breaking of sulfur polymers. 4. **Application of enhanced sampling techniques**: To overcome the limitations of rare event sampling in standard molecular dynamics simulations, the study employed enhanced sampling techniques. Specifically, a topological collective variable based on graph theory and machine learning was designed to effectively identify and sample key configurational changes. 5. **Comparison of theoretical results with experimental data**: The structural results obtained in the study (such as radial distribution functions and structure factors) were compared with experimental data, and a good agreement was found between the two, demonstrating the effectiveness and reliability of the methods used. 6. **Exploration of reaction mechanisms**: The paper proposes the dominant mechanisms of polymerization and depolymerization, including the process of converting cyclic structures to polymers and the different ways polymers reform into cyclic structures. These proposed mechanisms help to deeply understand the chemical driving forces during the λ-transition of liquid sulfur. In summary, the main goal of this paper is to reveal the complex structural changes and polymerization mechanisms of liquid sulfur during the λ-transition through advanced simulation techniques, thereby providing an important theoretical foundation for understanding this unique phase transition.
