Abstract:In his study on the geometry of Lie groups, Rosenfeld postulated a strict relation between all real forms of exceptional Lie groups and the isometries of projective and hyperbolic spaces over the (rank-2) tensor product of Hurwitz algebras taken with appropriate conjugations. Unfortunately, the procedure carried out by Rosenfeld was not rigorous, since many of the theorems he had been using do not actually hold true in the case of algebras that are not alternative nor power-associative. A more rigorous approach to the definition of all the planes presented more than thirty years ago by Rosenfeld in terms of their isometry group, can be considered within the theory of coset manifolds, which we exploit in this work, by making use of all real forms of Magic Squares of order three and two over Hurwitz normed division algebras and their split versions. Within our analysis, we find seven pseudo-Riemannian symmetric coset manifolds which seemingly cannot have any interpretation within Rosenfeld’s framework. We carry out a similar analysis for Rosenfeld lines, obtaining that there are a number of pseudo-Riemannian symmetric cosets which do not have any interpretation á la Rosenfeld.

Plücker Coordinates and the Rosenfeld Planes

Abstract:The exceptional compact hermitian symmetric space EIII is the quotient $E_6/Spin(10)\times_{\mathbb{Z}_4}U(1)$. We introduce the Plücker coordinates which give an embedding of EIII into $\mathbb{C}P^{26}$ as a projective subvariety. The subvariety is cut out by 27 Plücker relations. We show that, using Clifford algebra, one can solve this over-determined system of relations, giving local coordinate charts to the space. Our motivation is to understand EIII as the complex projective octonion plane $(\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{O})P^2$, whose construction is somewhat scattered across the literature. We will see that the EIII has an atlas whose transition functions have clear octonion interpretations, apart from those covering a sub-variety $X_{\infty}$ of dimension 10. This subvariety is itself a hermitian symmetric space known as DIII, with no apparent octonion interpretation. We give detailed analysis of the geometry in the neighbourhood of $X_{\infty}$. We further decompose $X={\rm EIII}$ into $F_4$-orbits: $X=Y_0\cup Y_{\infty}$, where $Y_0\sim(\mathbb{O}P^2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ is an open $F_4$-orbit and is the complexification of $\mathbb{O}P^2$, whereas $Y_{\infty}$ has co-dimension 1, thus EIII could be more appropriately denoted as $\overline{(\mathbb{O}P^2)_{\mathbb{C}}}$. This decomposition appears in the classification of equivariant completion of homogeneous algebraic varieties by Ahiezer \cite{Ahiezer}.

Abstract:We study the dimensions of Hadamard products of $k\ge 3$ varieties if we allow to modify $k-1$ of them by the action of a general projective linear transformation. We also prove that the join of a variety not contained in a coordinate hyperplane with a ``nice'' curve always has the expected dimension.

Abstract:In this essay we study various notions of projective space (and other schemes) over $\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}$, with $\mathbb{F}_1$ denoting the field with one element. Our leading motivation is the "Hiden Points Principle," which shows a huge deviation between the set of rational points as closed points defined over $\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}$, and the set of rational points defined as morphisms $\texttt{Spec}(\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}) \mapsto \mathcal{X}$. We also introduce, in the same vein as Kurokawa [13], schemes of $\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}$-type, and consider their zeta functions.

An important concern for us is to define a distance function on the projective space in such a way that the distance between two anisotropic subspaces of the same dimension can be easily calculated and case distinctions are avoided as far as possible.

Abstract:Bernstein-Schwarzman conjectured that the quotient of a complex affine space by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture was proved by Schwarzman and Tokunaga-Yoshida in dimension 2 for almost all such groups, and for all crystallographic reflection groups of Coxeter type by Looijenga, Bernstein-Schwarzman and Kac-Peterson in any dimension. We prove that the conjecture is true for the crystallographic reflection group in dimension 3 for which the associated collineation group is Klein's simple group of order 168. In this case the quotient is the 3-dimensional weighted projective space with weights 1, 2, 4, 7. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the algebra of invariant theta functions. Unlike the Coxeter case, the invariant algebra is not free polynomial, and this was the major stumbling block.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Roudneff's Conjecture in Dimension $4$

Abstract:J.-P. Roudneff conjectured in 1991 that every arrangement of $n \ge 2d+1\ge 5$ pseudohyperplanes in the real projective space $\mathbb{P}^d$ has at most $\sum_{i=0}^{d-2} \binom{n-1}{i}$ complete cells (i.e., cells bounded by each hyperplane). The conjecture is true for $d=2,3$ and for arrangements arising from Lawrence oriented matroids. The main result of this manuscript is to show the validity of Roudneff's conjecture for $d=4$. Moreover, based on computational data we conjecture that the maximum number of complete cells is only obtained by cyclic arrangements.

Abstract:We study rank-two reflexive sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $c_2 =4$, expanding on previous results for $c_2\le3$. We show that every spectrum not previously ruled out is realized. Moreover, moduli spaces are studied and described in detail for $c_1=-1$ or $0$ and $c_3\ge8$.

Abstract:Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements, also known as matroid Schubert varieties, play an essential role in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson conjecture and in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory for matroids. We study these varieties as equivariant compactifications of affine spaces, and give necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize them. We also generalize the theory to include partial compactifications and morphisms between them. Our results resemble the correspondence between toric varieties and polyhedral fans.

Abstract:The projective algebra p(M;F) (i.e the collection of all projective vector fields)of a Finsler space (M;F) is a finite-dimensional Lie algebra with respect to the usual Lie bracket. The projective algebra of Einstein metrics has been perpetually studied from physical and geometrical approaches. Here, the projective algebra of Einstein Matsumoto space of dimension n \geq 3 is characterized. Moreover, Einstein Matsumoto metrics with maximum projective symmetry are studied and characterized.

Abstract:We study the relation between critical exponents and Hausdorff dimensions of limit sets for projective Anosov representations. We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the symmetric limit set in $\mathbf{P}(\mathbb{R}^{n}) \times \mathbf{P}({\mathbb{R}^{n}}^*)$ is bounded between two critical exponents associated respectively to a highest weight and a simple root.

Abstract:Abstract I study several problems about the symmetric space associated with the Lie group . These problems are connected to an algorithm based on Poincaré's Fundamental Polyhedron Theorem, designed to determine generalized geometric finiteness properties for subgroups of . The algorithm is analogous to the original one in hyperbolic spaces, while the Riemannian distance is replaced by an ‐invariant premetric. The main results of this paper are twofold. In the first part, I focus on questions that occurred in generalizing Poincaré's Algorithm to my symmetric space. I describe and implement an algorithm that computes the face‐poset structure of finitely sided polyhedra, and construct an angle‐like function between hyperplanes. In the second part, I study further questions related to hyperplanes and Dirichlet–Selberg domains in my symmetric space. I establish several criteria for the disjointness of hyperplanes and classify particular Abelian subgroups of based on whether their Dirichlet–Selberg domains are finitely sided or not.

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.
Arithmetic and birational properties of linear spaces on intersections of two quadrics

Abstract:We study rationality questions for Fano schemes of linear spaces on smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, especially over non-closed fields. Our approach is to study hyperbolic reductions of the pencil of quadrics associated to $X$. We prove that the Fano schemes $F_r(X)$ of $r$-planes are birational to symmetric powers of hyperbolic reductions, generalizing results of Reid and Colliot-Th\'el\`ene--Sansuc--Swinnerton-Dyer, and we give several applications to rationality properties of $F_r(X)$. For instance, we show that if $X$ contains an $(r+1)$-plane over a field $k$, then $F_r(X)$ is rational over $k$. When $X$ has odd dimension, we show a partial converse for rationality of the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces, generalizing results of Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. When $X$ has even dimension, the analogous result does not hold, and we further investigate this situation over the real numbers. In particular, we prove a rationality criterion for the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces on these even-dimensional complete intersections over $\mathbb R$; this may be viewed as extending work of Hassett--Koll\'ar--Tschinkel.
