Abstract:A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is called a 2-distance coloring if any two vertices at distance at most $2$ from each other receive different colors. Let $G$ be a planar graph with girth at least $5$. We prove that $G$ admits a $2$-distance coloring with $\Delta+4$ colors if $\Delta\geq 22$.

Abstract:A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is called a 2-distance coloring if any two vertices at a distance at most $2$ from each other receive different colors. Suppose that $G$ is a planar graph with girth $5$ and maximum degree $\Delta$. We prove that $G$ admits a $2$-distance $\Delta+7$ coloring, which improves the result of Dong and Lin (J. Comb. Optim. 32(2), 645-655, 2016). Moreover, we prove that $G$ admits a $2$-distance $\Delta+6$ coloring when $\Delta\geq 10$.

Abstract:A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is called a $2$-distance coloring if any two vertices at a distance at most $2$ from each other receive different colors. Recently, Bousquet et al. (Discrete Mathematics, 346(4), 113288, 2023) proved that $2\Delta+7$ colors are sufficient for the $2$-distance coloring of planar graphs with maximum degree $\Delta\geq 9$. In this paper, we strengthen their result by removing the maximum degree constraint and show that all planar graphs admit a 2-distance $(2\Delta+7)$-coloring. This particularly improves the result of Van den Heuvel and McGuinness (Journal of Graph Theory, 42(2), 110-124, 2003).

Abstract:A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is said to be a 2-distance coloring if any two vertices at distance at most $2$ from each other receive different colors, and the least number of colors for which $G$ admits a $2$-distance coloring is known as the $2$-distance chromatic number $\chi_2(G)$ of $G$. When $G$ is a planar graph with girth at least $6$ and maximum degree $\Delta \geq 6$, we prove that $\chi_2(G)\leq \Delta +4$. This improves the best-known bound for 2-distance coloring of planar graphs with girth six.

Abstract:A $2$-distance $k$-coloring of a graph is a proper vertex $k$-coloring where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance $4$-coloring for planar subcubic graphs with girth at least 21. We also show a construction of a planar subcubic graph of girth 11 that is not $2$-distance $4$-colorable.

Abstract:A 2-distance $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper $k$-coloring such that any two vertices at distance two or less get different colors. The 2-distance chromatic number of $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a 2-distance $k$-coloring, denoted by $\chi_2(G)$. In this paper, we show that $\chi_2(G) \leq 20$ for every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree at most six, which improves a former bound $\chi_2(G) \leq 21$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider simple undirected graphs without loops. A proper k-coloring of the vertices of a graph G = (V,E) is an assignment of colors from 1 to k such that no two adjacent vertices have the same color. The chromatic number of G, denoted χ(G), is the smallest integer k so that G has a proper k-coloring. In 1969, Kramer and Kramer introduced the notion of 2-distance k-coloring [23] which is a proper k-coloring such that no pair of vertices at distance 2 have the same color. The 2-distance chromatic number of G, denoted χ(G), is the smallest integer k so that G has a 2-distance k-coloring. An example of 2-distance coloring is given in Figure 1a.

Abstract:A graph G is (d1,…,dk)-colorable if the vertex set V(G) can be partitioned into k sets V1,…,Vk such that the subgraph G[Vi] has maximum degree at most di for 1≤i≤k. Montassier and Ochem [11], Choi and Raspaud [5], independently, posed an open question whether every planar graph of girth at least 5 is (1,4)-colorable. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph of girth at least 5 is (1,9)-colorable, which improves the result of Choi, Choi, Jeong and Suh who showed that every planar graph of girth at least 5 is (1,10)-colorable [J. Graph Theory 84 (2017) 521–535].

Abstract:Using computational techniques we provide a framework for proving results on subclasses of planar graphs via discharging method. The aim of this paper is to apply these techniques to study the 2-distance coloring of planar subcubic graphs. Applying these techniques we show that every subcubic planar graph $G$ of girth at least 8 has 2-distance chromatic number at most 6.

Abstract:The \textit{square} of a graph $G$, denoted by $G^2$, is obtained from $G$ by adding an edge to connect every pair of vertices with a common neighbor in $G$. In this paper we prove that for every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $5$, $G^2$ admits a proper vertex coloring using at most $17$ colors, which improves the upper bound $18$ recently obtained by Hou, Jin, Miao, and Zhao.

Abstract:Thomassen (J. Combin. Theory Ser B 128:192–218, 2018) showed that every subcubic planar graph has 2-distance chromatic number at most 7, which was originally conjectured by Wegner (graphs with given diameter and a coloring problem, University of Dortmund, preprint, 1977). In this note, we consider 3-distance colorings of this family of graphs, and prove that every subcubic planar graph has 3-distance chromatic number at most 17, and we conjecture that this number can be reduced to 12. In addition, we show that every planar graph with maximum degree at most has 3-distance chromatic number at most .

Abstract:The concept of DP-coloring of a graph is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 , 38–54, 2018). Multiple DP-coloring of graphs, as a generalization of multiple list coloring, was first studied by Bernshteyn, Kostochka and Zhu (J. Graph Theory 93 , 203–221, 2020). This paper proves that planar graphs without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles are (7 m , 2 m )-DP-colorable for every integer m . As a consequence, the strong fractional choice number of any planar graph without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles is at most 7/2.

Abstract:For a positive integer $k$, the $k$-recolouring graph of a graph $G$ has as vertex set all proper $k$-colourings of $G$ with two $k$-colourings being adjacent if they differ by the colour of exactly one vertex. A result of Dyer et al. regarding graphs of bounded degeneracy implies that the $7$-recolouring graphs of planar graphs, the $5$-recolouring graphs of triangle-free planar graphs and the $4$-recolouring graphs planar graphs of girth at least six are connected. On the other hand, there are planar graphs whose $6$-recolouring graph is disconnected, triangle-free planar graphs whose $4$-recolouring graph is disconnected and planar graphs of any given girth whose $3$-recolouring graph is disconnected. The main result of this paper consists in showing, via a novel application of the discharging method, that the $4$-recolouring graph of every planar graph of girth five is connected. This completes the classification of the connectedness of the recolouring graph for planar graphs of given girth. We also prove some theorems regarding the diameter of the recolouring graph of planar graphs.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

The DP-coloring of the square of subcubic graphs

Abstract:The 2-distance coloring of a graph $G$ is equivalent to the proper coloring of its square graph $G^2$, it is a special distance labeling problem. DP-coloring (or "Correspondence coloring") was introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2018, to answer a conjecture of list coloring proposed by Borodin. In recent years, many researches pay attention to the DP-coloring of planar graphs with some restriction in cycles. We study the DP-coloring of the square of subcubic graphs in terms of maximum average degree $\rm{mad}(G)$, and by the discharging method, we showed that: for a subcubic graph $G$, if $\rm{mad}(G)<9/4$, then $G^2$ is DP-5-colorable; if $\rm{mad}(G)<12/5$, then $G^2$ is DP-6-colorable. And the bound in the first result is sharp.

Abstract:A coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ in which every $K_{1,2}$ is totally multicolored is known as a proper coloring and a coloring of the edges of $G$ in which every $K_{1,2}$ and every $K_{2,2}$ is totally multicolored is called a B-coloring. In this paper, we establish that a planar graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ can be B-colored with $\max\{2\Delta,32\}$ colors. This is best-possible for large $\Delta$ because $K_{2,\Delta}$ requires $2\Delta$ colors. In addition, there is an example with $\Delta=4$ that requires $12$ colors. We also establish that an outerplanar graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ can be B-colored with $\max\{\Delta,6\}$ colors. This is almost best-possible because $\Delta$ colors are necessary and there is an example with $\Delta=4$ that requires $5$ colors.

Abstract:A graph G is called (d1,…,dr)-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into r sets V1,…,Vr such that the maximum degree of the induced subgraph G[Vi] of G is at most di for i∈{1,…,r}. Steinberg conjectured that every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (0, 0, 0)-colorable. Unfortunately, the conjecture does not hold and it has been proved that every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (1, 1, 0)-colorable. When only two colors are allowed to use, it is known that some planar graphs without 4/5-cycles are not (1,k)-colorable for any k≥0 and every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (3,4)-colorable or (2,6)-colorable. In this paper, we reduce the gap for 2-coloring by proving that every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (3,3)-colorable.
