Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the ( 1 , 1 ) (1,1) -component of the curvature 2 2 -form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds S 2 n − 1 × S 1 \mathbb {S}^{2n-1}\times \mathbb {S}^1 . We also construct a smooth family of Gauduchon metrics on a compact Hermitian manifold such that the metrics are in the same first Aeppli-Chern class, and their first Chern-Ricci curvatures are the same and non-negative, but their Riemannian scalar curvatures are constant and vary smoothly between negative infinity and a positive number. In particular, it shows that Hermitian manifolds with non-negative first Chern class can admit Hermitian metrics with strictly negative Riemannian scalar curvature.

Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation extends through the singularity in the real-analytic nondegenerate case. Furthermore, we prove that the quadric is a (convergent) normal form for a natural large class of such submanifolds, and we compute its automorphism group. In general, we find a formal normal form in ${\mathbb{C}}^3$ in the nondegenerate case that shows infinitely many formal invariants.

Abstract:For later use in subsequent upcoming <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org">arxiv.org</a> prepublications, basic foundational material on local, smooth or real analytic, CR-generic submanifolds of complex Euclidean spaces is developed from scratch, with strong emphasis on the interplay between extrinsic and intrinsic aspects, a constructive option that commands to perform computational syntheses in coordinates. Mainly, one finds a self-contained proof of the existence of precisely six general classes: I, II, III-1, III-2, IV-1, IV-2 of nondegenerate general CR manifolds up to dimension 5, class III-2 being unobserved untill now.

Basic cohomology of canonical holomorphic foliations on complex moment-angle manifolds

Abstract:We describe the basic cohomology ring of the canonical holomorphic foliation on a moment-angle manifold, LVMB-manifold or any complex manifold with a maximal holomorphic torus action. Namely, we show that the basic cohomology has a description similar to the cohomology ring of a complete simplicial toric variety due to Danilov and Jurkiewicz. This settles a question of Battaglia and Zaffran, who previously computed the basic Betti numbers for the canonical holomorphic foliation in the case of a shellable fan. Our proof uses an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence argument; the key ingredient is the formality of the Cartan model for the torus action on a moment-angle manifold. We develop the concept of transverse equivalence as an important tool for studying smooth and holomorphic foliated manifolds. For an arbitrary complex manifold with a maximal torus action, we show that it is transverse equivalent to a moment-angle manifold and therefore has the same basic cohomology.

Abstract:We generalize the higher Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in the presence of scalar curvature for a (possibly non-compact) smooth manifold $M$. We show that the dg-category of curved $\infty$-local systems, the dg-category of graded vector bundles with projectively flat $\mathbb Z$-graded connections and the dg-category of curved representations of the singular simplicial set of the based loop space of $M$ are all $A_\infty$-quasi equivalent. They provide dg-enhancements of the subcategory of the bounded derived category of twisted sheaves whose cohomology sheaves are locally constant and have finite-dimensional fibers. In the ungraded case, we reduce to an equivalence between projectively flat vector bundles and a subcategory of projective representations of $\pi_1(M; x_0)$. As an application of our general framework, we also prove that the category of cohesive modules over the curved Dolbeault algebra of a complex manifold $X$ is equivalent to a subcategory of the bounded derived category of twisted sheaves of $\mathcal O_X$-modules which generalizes a theorem due to Block to possibly non-compact complex manifolds.

Abstract:Conformally quasi-recurrent (CQR)_n pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are investigated, and several new results are obtained. It is shown that the Ricci tensor and the gradient of the fundamental vector are Weyl compatible tensors (the notion was introduced recently by the authors and applies to significative space-times), (CQR)_n manifolds with concircular fundamental vector are quasi-Einstein. For 4-dimensional (CQR)$_4$ Lorentzian manifolds the fundamental vector is null and unique up to a scaling, it is an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor, and its integral curves are geodesics. Such space-times are Petrov type-N with respect to the fundamental null vector.

Abstract:We classify singular holomorphic vector fields in two-dimensional complex space admitting a (Levi-nonflat) real-analytic invariant 3-fold through the singularity. In this way, we complete the classification of infinitesimal symmetries of real-analytic Levi-nonflat hypersurfaces in complex two-space. The classification of holomorphic vector fields obtained in the paper has very interesting overlaps with the recent Lombardi-Stolovitch classification theory for holomorphic vector fields at a singularity. In particular, we show that most of the resonances arising in Lombardi-Stolovitch theory do not occur under the presence of (Levi-nonflat) integral manifolds.

Abstract:We apply E. Cartan's method of equivalence to classify 7-dimensional, 2-nondegenerate CR manifolds $M$ up to local CR equivalence in the case that the cubic form of $M$ satisfies a certain symmetry property with respect to the Levi form of $M$. The solution to the equivalence problem is given by a parallelism on a principal bundle over $M$. When the nondegenerate part of the Levi form has definite signature, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(2,2)$. When this signature is split and an additional "isotropy-switching" hypothesis is satisfied, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(3,1)$. Differentiating the parallelism provides a complete set of local invariants of $M$. We exhibit an explicit example of a real hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^4$ whose invariants are nontrivial.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:We show that a bi-flat F-structure $(\nabla,\circ,e,\nabla^*,*,E)$ on a manifold $M$ defines a differential bicomplex $(d_{\nabla},d_{E\circ\nabla^*})$ on forms with value on the tangent sheaf of the manifold. Moreover, the sequence of vector fields defined recursively by $d_{\nabla}X_{(\alpha+1)}=d_{L\nabla^*}X_{(\alpha)}$ coincide with the coefficients of the formal expansion of the flat local sections of a family of flat connections $\nabla^{GM}$ associated with the bi-flat structure. In the case of Dubrovin-Frobenius manifold the connection $\nabla^{GM}$ (for suitable choice of an auxiliary parameter) can be identified with the Levi-Civita connection of the flat pencil of metrics defined by the invariant metric and the intesection form.

Modelling a Parasystolic Rhythm in a Heart-Transplant Patient

Abstract:A parasystole from a heart-transplant patient is analysed using a beat-to-beat RR interval time series obtained from an electrocardiogram (ECG). The dysrhythmia, resulting from the co-existence of two pacemakers, the sinus node and an ectopic focus, presents distinctive regular patterns, with transitions from one pattern to another occurring abruptly. It is shown that the parasystolic rhythm can be simulated by a model involving two oscillators firing at fixed rates, under the restriction that neither is allowed to fire during the other's refractory period. It is found that the structure of the generated RR time series is essentially determined by the ratio of the period of the two oscillators. In the case of a heart-transplant patient with a small heart-rate variability as a result of heart denervation, the model predicts the RR intervals with an error of less than 6% for an 80-beat sequence. From a physiological point of view, the results imply that the interaction between the two pacemakers in the heart is fairly weak, and hence the parasystole observed in the heart-transplant patient can be modelled as a pure parasystole.

Examples of Harmonic Foliated Currents and Singular Levi-flats on the Projective Plane

Abstract:We provide examples of foliations on the complex projective plane $\CP^2$ carrying positive foliated harmonic currents whose supports coincide with singular Levi-flats which, in turn, can be chosen real-analytic (but non-algebraic) or merely continuous with fractal transverse nature. Furthermore, non-trivial examples as above can already be found among foliations of degree~$2$ and~$3$. In addition, the space of positive foliated harmonic currents for these foliations is fully characterised and it contains a unique harmonic (non-closed) current supported on the Levi-flat in question. Finally, we also provide examples of foliations carrying diffuse positive foliated closed currents related to a theorem due to Brunella as well as a general criterion for the existence of singular real analytic Levi-flats for Riccati foliations.

Abstract:These notes give an introduction to the equivalence problem of sub-Riemannian manifolds. We first introduce preliminaries in terms of connections, frame bundles and sub-Riemannian geometry. Then we arrive to the main aim of these notes, which is to give the description of the canonical grading and connection existing on sub-Riemann manifolds with constant symbol. These structures are exactly what is needed in order to determine if two manifolds are isometric. We give three concrete examples, which are Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds, contact manifolds and Cartan (2,3,5)-manifolds. These notes are an edited version of a lecture series given at the \href{https://conference.math.muni.cz/srni/}{42nd Winter school: Geometry and Physics}, Snr\'i, Check Republic, mostly based on other earlier work. However, the work on Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds is original research, and illustrate the important special case were our model has the minimal set of isometries.

Abstract:We show that any continuous $\mathbf{C}$-linear Lie algebra splitting of the symbol map from the Atiyah algebra of a vector bundle on a complex manifold is given by a differential operator of order at most the rank of the bundle plus one. Bundles equipped with such a splitting can be thought of as \emph{infinitesimally equivariant} bundles, and our theorem implies these are, in a certain sense, in a categorical formal neighbourhood of vector bundles with a flat connection.
