Abstract:It is known that a two dimensional dimerized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model can produce a nontrivial topological phase. It is a simple nearest-neighbor model with either two or four lattice sites in in two dimensions. Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is easy to analyse but neglects important interaction in physical systems. In this work, an extended version of this model is proposed which includes all possible second nearest neighbor interactions in order to make it more feasible to describe realistic systems. The topological phases and properties of the model are characterized using a polarization invariant. It is further shown that second nearest neighbor interactions can be used to evoke a topological phase transition as well.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper This paper aims to explore the changes in the topological phase and properties of the extended 2D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model after introducing Second-Nearest-Neighbor (SNN) interactions. Specifically, the paper addresses the following key issues: 1. **Model Extension**: - The original SSH model only considers nearest-neighbor interactions, neglecting the important second-nearest-neighbor interactions in physical systems. Therefore, the paper proposes an extended SSH model that includes all possible second-nearest-neighbor interactions to better describe actual systems. 2. **Topological Phase Transition**: - The impact of second-nearest-neighbor interactions on the topological phase is studied, particularly whether these interactions can induce topological phase transitions. By analyzing the polarization invariants of the system, the paper explores the topological properties of the system under different parameter conditions. 3. **Symmetry Changes**: - Introducing second-nearest-neighbor interactions breaks chiral and particle-hole symmetry, thereby changing the topological classification of the system. The paper defines a vectorized parity invariant and provides the parity eigenvalues of the model. 4. **Stability of Surface States**: - The impact of second-nearest-neighbor interactions on surface states is studied. Although these interactions have a minor effect on surface states, they cause significant deformation and displacement in bulk states, leading to band gap closure and band inversion, which in turn affects the stability of the topological phase. 5. **Numerical Results**: - Through numerical simulations, the paper verifies the band structure and topological properties of the system under different parameter conditions, especially the localization characteristics of wave functions under non-periodic boundary conditions. This helps confirm the conditions for the occurrence of topological phase transitions. ### Main Findings - **Non-Metallic Fully Topological Phase (NM 11)**: - This phase exhibits the strongest resistance to symmetry-breaking perturbations after introducing second-nearest-neighbor interactions. - **New Topological Phases**: - For larger second-nearest-neighbor interaction strengths, new topological phases appear in the metallic phases of the trivial phase (M00) and partially trivial phase (M01). - **Band Gap Closure and Band Inversion**: - Second-nearest-neighbor interactions lead to band gap closure and band inversion, causing the system to transition from a metallic phase to a non-metallic phase, or from a topological phase to a trivial phase, and vice versa. ### Conclusion By introducing second-nearest-neighbor interactions, the paper successfully extends the 2D SSH model, revealing the significant impact of these interactions on the topological properties of the system. The research results not only enhance the understanding of topological insulators but also provide a theoretical foundation for designing materials with specific topological properties.
