Abstract:Despite extensive studies on the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model, the variant incorporating next-nearest neighbour hopping remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the ground-state properties of this extended SSHH model using the constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (CP-AFQMC) method. We show that this model exhibits rich topological phases, characterized by robust edge states against interaction. We quantify the properties of these edge states by analyzing spin correlation and second-order Rényi entanglement entropy. The system exhibits long-range spin correlation and near-zero Rényi entropy at half-filling. Besides, there is a long-range anti-ferromagnetic order at quarter-filling. Interestingly, an external magnetic field disrupts this long-range anti-ferromagnetic order, restoring long-range spin correlation and near-zero Rényi entropy. Furthermore, our work provides a paradigm studying topological properties in large interacting systems via the CP-AFQMC algorithm.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of exploring the ground state properties of a one-dimensional extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model that includes next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Although the one-dimensional SSH model has been extensively studied, variants that include next-nearest-neighbor hopping have been less explored. The authors investigate the topological phases of this extended model and their properties under interactions using the Constrained Path Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo (CP-AFQMC) method. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Characteristics of Topological Phases**: Study the topological phases of the extended SSHH model under different parameters, particularly the stability of these phases under interactions. 2. **Properties of Edge States**: Analyze the spin correlations and second-order Rényi entanglement entropy of the edge states to quantify their properties. 3. **Effects of Interactions**: Explore the impact of Coulomb interactions on the topological properties of the system, especially the long-range spin correlations and antiferromagnetic order at half-filling and quarter-filling. 4. **Effects of External Magnetic Field**: Investigate how an external magnetic field disrupts long-range antiferromagnetic order and restores long-range spin correlations and near-zero Rényi entanglement entropy. Through these studies, the authors aim to provide a new paradigm for studying topological properties in strongly interacting systems, utilizing the CP-AFQMC algorithm to address these issues.
