Abstract:Given $t\geq 2$ and $0\leq k\leq t$, we prove that the number of labelled $k$-connected chordal graphs with $n$ vertices and tree-width at most $t$ is asymptotically $c n^{-5/2} \gamma^n n!$, as $n\to\infty$, for some constants $c,\gamma >0$ depending on $t$ and $k$. Additionally, we show that the number of $i$-cliques ($2\leq i\leq t$) in a uniform random $k$-connected chordal graph with tree-width at most $t$ is normally distributed as $n\to\infty$. The asymptotic enumeration of graphs of tree-width at most $t$ is wide open for $t\geq 3$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial class of graphs with bounded tree-width where the asymptotic counting problem is solved. Our starting point is the work of Wormald [Counting Labelled Chordal Graphs, Graphs and Combinatorics (1985)], were an algorithm is developed to obtain the exact number of labelled chordal graphs on $n$ vertices.

Bounded twin-width graphs are polynomially $χ$-bounded

Abstract:We show that every graph with twin-width $t$ has chromatic number $O(\omega ^{k_t})$ for some integer $k_t$, where $\omega$ denotes the clique number. This extends a quasi-polynomial bound from Pilipczuk and Sokołowski and generalizes a result for bounded clique-width graphs by Bonamy and Pilipczuk. The proof uses the main ideas of the quasi-polynomial approach, with a different treatment of the decomposition tree. In particular, we identify two types of extensions of a class of graphs: the delayed-extension (which preserves polynomial $\chi$-boundedness) and the right-extension (which preserves polynomial $\chi$-boundedness under bounded twin-width condition). Our main result is that every bounded twin-width graph is a delayed extension of simpler classes of graphs, each expressed as a bounded union of right extensions of lower twin-width graphs.

Abstract:We present and study the following conjecture: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and a graph $H$, every even-hole-free graph of large enough treewidth has an induced subgraph isomorphic to either $K_t$ or $H$, if (and only if) $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. The ``only if'' part follows from the properties of the so-called layered wheels due to Sintiari and Trotignon. Alecu, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and the author recently proved the conjecture in two special cases: (a) when $t=4$; and (b) when $H=cone (F)$ for some forest $F$; that is, $H$ is obtained from $F$ by adding a universal vertex. Our first result is a common strengthening: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and graphs $F$ and $H$, (even-hole, $cone(cone (F))$, $H$, $K_t$)-free graphs have bounded treewidth if and only if $F$ is a forest and $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. Also, for general $t\geq 4$, we push the current state of the art further than (b) by settling the conjecture for the smallest choices of $H$ that are not coned forests. This follows from our second result: we prove the conjecture when $H$ is a crystal; that is, a graph obtained from several coned double stars by gluing them together along the middle edges of the double stars. In the first version of this paper, we suggested a strengthening of our main conjecture, that for every $t\geq 1$, every graph of sufficiently large treewidth has an induced subgraph of treewidth $t$ which is either complete, complete bipartite, or $2$-degenerate. This strengthening has now been refuted by Chudnovsky and Trotignon [On treewidth and maximum cliques, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.07471" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.07471">arXiv:2405.07471</a>, 2024].

Succinct Data Structure for Chordal Graphs with Bounded Vertex Leafage

Abstract:We improve the worst-case information theoretic lower bound of Munro and Wu (ISAAC 2018) for $n-$vertex unlabeled chordal graphs when vertex leafage is bounded and leafage is unbounded. The class of unlabeled $k-$vertex leafage chordal graphs that consists of all chordal graphs with vertex leafage at most $k$ and unbounded leafage, denoted $\mathcal{G}_k$, is introduced for the first time. For $k>0$ in $o(n/\log n)$, we obtain a lower bound of $((k-1)n \log n -kn \log k - O(\log n))-$bits on the size of any data structure that encodes a graph in $\mathcal{G}_k$. Further, for every $k-$vertex leafage chordal graph $G$ such that for $k>1$ in $o(n^c), c >0$, we present a $((k-1)n \log n + o(kn \log n))-$bit succinct data structure, constructed using the succinct data structure for path graphs with $kn/2$ vertices. Our data structure supports adjacency query in $O(k \log n)$ time and using additional $2n \log n$ bits, an $O(k^2 d_v \log n + \log^2 n)$ time neighbourhood query where $d_v$ is degree of $v \in V$.

Abstract:A hole in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of length at least four. A graph is chordal if it contains no holes. Following McKee and Scheinerman (1993), we define the chordality of a graph $G$ to be the minimum number of chordal graphs on $V(G)$ such that the intersection of their edge sets is equal to $E(G)$. In this paper we study classes of graphs of bounded chordality.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic distributions of the number of crossings and the number of simple chords in a random chord diagram. Using size-bias coupling and Stein's method, we obtain bounds on the Kolmogorov distance between the distribution of the number of crossings and a standard normal random variable, and on the total variation distance between the distribution of the number of simple chords and a Poisson random variable. As an application, we provide explicit error bounds on the number of chord diagrams containing no simple chords.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is a {\em chordal-$k$-generalized split graph} if $G$ is chordal and there is a clique $Q$ in $G$ such that every connected component in $G[V \setminus Q]$ has at most $k$ vertices. Thus, chordal-$1$-generalized split graphs are exactly the split graphs. We characterize chordal-$k$-generalized split graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. Moreover, we characterize a very special case of chordal-$2$-generalized split graphs for which the Efficient Domination problem is \NP-complete.

On minimally tough chordal graphs

Abstract:Katona and Varga showed that for any rational number $t \in (1/2,1]$, no chordal graph is minimally $t$-tough. We conjecture that no chordal graph is minimally $t$-tough for $t>1/2$ and prove several results supporting the conjecture. In particular, we show that for $t>1/2$, no strongly chordal graph is minimally $t$-tough, no split graph is minimally $t$-tough, and no chordal graph with a universal vertex is minimally $t$-tough.

Dirac-type conditions for spanning bounded-degree hypertrees

Abstract:We prove that for fixed $k$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and of minimum codegree at least $n/2+o(n)$ contains every spanning tight $k$-tree of bounded vertex degree as a sub\-graph. This generalises a well-known result of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi for graphs. Our result is asymptotically sharp. We also prove an extension of our result to hypergraphs that satisfy some weak quasirandomness conditions.

Abstract:A theorem of Frieze from 1985 asserts that the total weight of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph $K_n$ whose edges get independent weights from the distribution $UNIFORM[0,1]$ converges to Apéry's constant in probability, as $n\to\infty$. We generalize this result to sequences of graphs $G_n$ that converge to a graphon $W$. Further, we allow the weights of the edges to be drawn from different distributions (subject to moderate conditions). The limiting total weight $\kappa(W)$ of the minimum spanning tree is expressed in terms of a certain branching process defined on $W$, which was studied previously by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan in connection with the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs.

Abstract:We construct classes of graphs that are variants of the so-called layered wheel. One of their key properties is that while the treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number, the construction can be adjusted to make the dependance grow arbitrarily. Some of these classes provide counter-examples to several conjectures. In particular, the construction includes hereditary classes of graphs whose treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number while the tree-independence number is unbounded, thus disproving a conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel [Treewidth versus clique number. Abstract:The hyperbolicity $ \delta^* \ge 0 $ of a metric space in Gromov's sense can be viewed as a measure of how "tree-like" the space is, since those spaces for which $ \delta^* = 0 $ holds are precisely the set of (metric) trees. Here, we show that any chordal graph equipped with the usual graph metric is in this sense reasonably tree-like. In particular, we prove that the hyperbolicity of any chordal graph is bounded, and is at most two. Moreover, we characterize those chordal graphs with hyperbolicity one.

Abstract:A common task in phylogenetics is to find an evolutionary tree representing proximity relationships between species. This motivates the notion of leaf powers: a graph G = (V, E) is a leaf power if there exist a tree T on leafset V and a threshold k such that uv is an edge if and only if the distance between u and v in T is at most k. Characterizing leaf powers is a challenging open problem, along with determining the complexity of their recognition. This is in part due to the fact that few graphs are known to not be leaf powers, as such graphs are difficult to construct. Recently, Nevries and Rosenke asked if leaf powers could be characterized by strong chordality and a finite set of forbidden subgraphs. In this paper, we provide a negative answer to this question, by exhibiting an infinite family \G of (minimal) strongly chordal graphs that are not leaf powers. During the process, we establish a connection between leaf powers, alternating cycles and quartet compatibility. We also show that deciding if a chordal graph is \G-free is NP-complete, which may provide insight on the complexity of the leaf power recognition problem.
Chordal bipartite graphs, biclique vertex partitions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $1$-subdivision graphs

Abstract:A biclique in a graph $G$ is a complete bipartite subgraph (not necessarily induced), and the least positive integer $k$ for which the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into at most $k$ bicliques is the biclique vertex partition number $bp(G)$ of $G$. We prove that the inequality $reg(S(G))\geq |G|-bp(G)$ holds for every graph $G$, where $S(G)$ is the $1$-subdivision graph of $G$ and $reg(S(G))$ denotes the (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity of the graph $S(G)$. In particular, we show that the equality $reg(S(B))=|B|-bp(B)$ holds provided that $B$ is a chordal bipartite graph. Furthermore, for every chordal bipartite graph $B$, we prove that the independence complex of $S(B)$ is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere, and provide a polynomial time checkable criteria for when it is contractible, and describe the dimension of the sphere when it is not.

Abstract:In 2020, we initiated a systematic study of graph classes in which the treewidth can only be large due to the presence of a large clique, which we call $(\mathrm{tw},\omega)$-bounded. While $(\mathrm{tw},\omega)$-bounded graph classes are known to enjoy some good algorithmic properties related to clique and coloring problems, it is an interesting open problem whether $(\mathrm{tw},\omega)$-boundedness also has useful algorithmic implications for problems related to independent sets. We provide a partial answer to this question by means of a new min-max graph invariant related to tree decompositions. We define the independence number of a tree decomposition $\mathcal{T}$ of a graph as the maximum independence number over all subgraphs of $G$ induced by some bag of $\mathcal{T}$. The tree-independence number of a graph $G$ is then defined as the minimum independence number over all tree decompositions of $G$. Generalizing a result on chordal graphs due to Cameron and Hell from 2006, we show that if a graph is given together with a tree decomposition with bounded independence number, then the Maximum Weight Independent Packing problem can be solved in polynomial time. Eigenvalues and spanning trees with constrained degree

Abstract:In this paper, we study some spanning trees with bounded degree and leaf degree from eigenvalues. For any integer $k\geq2$, a $k$-tree is a spanning tree in which every vertex has degree no more than $k$. Let $T$ be a spanning tree of a connected graph. The leaf degree of $T$ is the maximum number of end-vertices attached to $v$ in $T$ for any $v\in V(T)$. By referring to the technique shown in [Eigenvalues and $[a,b]$-factors in regular graphs, J. Graph Theory. 100 (2022) 458-469], for an $r$-regular graph $G$, we provide an upper bound for the fourth largest adjacency eigenvalue of $G$ to guarantee the existence of a $k$-tree. Moreover, for a $t$-connected graph, we prove a tight sufficient condition for the existence of a spanning tree with leaf degree at most $k$ in terms of spectral radius. This generalizes a result of Theorem 1.5 in [Spectral radius and spanning trees of graphs, Discrete Math. 346 (2023) 113400]. Finally, for a general graph $G$, we present two sufficient conditions for the existence of a spanning tree with leaf degree at most $k$ via the Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ and the spectral radius of the complement of $G$, respectively.

More precisely, we establish several results on the diameter of trees as a function of the number of nodes, as listed below. These results have important consequences on the landscape of locally checkable labelings (LCL) on \emph{unbounded} degree graphs, a case in which our lack of knowledge is in striking contrast with that of \emph{bounded degree graphs}, that has been intensively studied recently. Abstract:We study how the relationship between non-equivalent width parameters changes once we restrict to some special graph class. As width parameters, we consider treewidth, clique-width, twin-width, mim-width, sim-width and tree-independence number, whereas as graph classes we consider $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free graphs, line graphs and their common superclass, for $t \geq 3$, of $K_{t,t}$-free graphs. We first provide a complete comparison when restricted to $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free graphs, showing in particular that treewidth, clique-width, mim-width, sim-width and tree-independence number are all equivalent. This extends a result of Gurski and Wanke (2000) stating that treewidth and clique-width are equivalent for the class of $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free graphs. Next, we provide a complete comparison when restricted to line graphs, showing in particular that, on any class of line graphs, clique-width, mim-width, sim-width and tree-independence number are all equivalent, and bounded if and only if the class of root graphs has bounded treewidth. This extends a result of Gurski and Wanke (2007) stating that a class of graphs ${\cal G}$ has bounded treewidth if and only if the class of line graphs of graphs in ${\cal G}$ has bounded clique-width. We then provide an almost-complete comparison for $K_{t,t}$-free graphs, leaving one missing case. Our main result is that $K_{t,t}$-free graphs of bounded mim-width have bounded tree-independence number. This result has structural and algorithmic consequences. In particular, it proves a special case of a conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel. Finally, we consider the question of whether boundedness of a certain width parameter is preserved under graph powers. We show that the question has a positive answer for sim-width precisely in the case of odd powers.

Abstract:Strict outerconfluent drawing is a style of graph drawing in which vertices are drawn on the boundary of a disk, adjacencies are indicated by the existence of smooth curves through a system of tracks within the disk, and no two adjacent vertices are connected by more than one of these smooth tracks. We investigate graph width parameters on the graphs that have drawings in this style. We prove that the clique-width of these graphs is unbounded, but their twin-width is bounded.
