Abstract:There are complex pressures from many sources in physics for questioning whether space-time is a fundamental structure. Much of the impetus has come from considerations of cosmology and quantum gravity. Theories of quantum gravity almost all describe fundamental structures that are significantly non-spatiotemporal. In that setting, the motivation comes from high-level theoretical concerns that are quite far removed from experience. Much of the discussion is highly technical and has not penetrated into the philosophical literature.1 In philosophy, discussion of the possibility that space is not fundamental has centered on a particular proposal for the interpretation of quantum mechanics: David Albert’s wave-function realism (Albert , ). There, the discussion is conducted in the context of standard, nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and is quite narrowly focused on whether the virtues of wave-function realism outweigh those of, say, GRW or Oxford Everett. The status of space on Albert’s proposal has mostly been treated as a problem, and one that we would rather do without. There hasn’t been, either in the physics literature or in the philosophical literature, a clear articulation of the general impetus provided by quantum phenomena for the move to an ontology in which space is recovered as an emergent structure. That is what I will try to provide. I will suggest that there are signs in the most basic and familiar features of quantum phenomena that space (-time) is not fundamental. I will present simple low-dimensional examples that reproduce aspects of entanglement and complementarity and explore the difference between two kinds of explanation:one that looks for causal processes passing through the space in which the correlated events are situated, and one that derives them as lower dimensional projections of a higher dimensional reality. The chapter is meant to display in a simple setting a form of explanation that connects quantum phenomena to questions about the status of space. For those who

Abstract:In resisting attempts to explain the unity of a whole in terms of a multiplicity of interacting parts, quantum mechanics calls for an explanatory concept that proceeds in the opposite direction: from unity to multiplicity. It concerns the process by which what Sellars called the Manifest Image of the world comes into being. This process consists in the progressive differentiation of an intrinsically undifferentiated entity. By entering into reflexive spatial relations, this gives rise to (i) what looks like a multiplicity of relata if the reflexive quality of the relations is not taken into account, and (ii) what looks like a substantial expanse if the spatial quality of the relations is reified. If there is a distinctly quantum domain, it is a non-spatial and non-temporal dimension across which the transition from the unity of this entity to the multiplicity of the world takes place. Instead of being constituents of the physical world, subatomic particles, atoms, and molecules are instrumental in its manifestation. These conclusions are based on the following interpretive principle: whenever calculating probabilities calls for the addition of amplitudes, the distinctions we make between the alternatives lack objective reality. Applied to alternatives involving distinctions between regions of space, this principle implies that the spatiotemporal differentiation of the physical world is incomplete: the existence of a real-valued spatiotemporal background is an unrealistic idealization. This guarantees the existence of observables whose values are real *per se*, as against "real by virtue of being indicated by the values of observables that are real *per se*." Applied to alternatives involving distinctions between things, it implies that, intrinsically, all fundamental particles are numerically identical and thus identifiable with the aforementioned undifferentiated entity.

Three-space as a quantum hyper-layer in 1+3 dimensions

Abstract:We discuss a formalism where a universe is identified with the support of a wave function propagating through space-time. As opposed to classical cosmology, the resulting universe is not a spacelike section of some space-time, but a hyper-layer of a finite timelike width, a set which is not a three-dimensional submanifold of space-time. We test the formalism on the example of a universe that contains a single harmonic oscillator (a generalization of the curvature-dependent Cariñena-Rañada-Santander (CRS) model). As opposed to the original CRS formulation, here the curvature is not a parameter but a quantum observable, a function of the world-position operator. It is shown that asymptotically, for large values of the invariant evolution parameter $\tau$, one reconstructs the standard quantum results, with one modifiication: The effective (renormalized) mass of the oscillator decreases with $\tau$. The effect does not seem to be a peculiarity of harmonic oscillators, so one may speculate that masses of distant elementary quantum systems are greater from their values known from our quantum mechanical measurements.

Abstract:Hilbert-Space Fundamentalism (HSF) states that the only fundamental structures are the quantum state vector and the Hamiltonian, and from them everything else emerge uniquely, including the 3D-space, a preferred basis, and a preferred factorization of the Hilbert space. In this article it is shown that whenever such a structure emerges from the Hamiltonian and the state vector alone, if it is physically relevant, it is not unique. Moreover, HSF leads to strange effects like "passive" travel in time and in alternative realities, realized simply by passive transformations of the Hilbert space. The results from this article affect all theories that adhere to HSF, whether they assume branching or state vector reduction (in particular the version of Everett's Interpretation coined by Carroll and Singh "Mad-dog Everettianism"), various proposals based on decoherence, proposals that aim to describe everything by the quantum structure alone, and proposals that spacetime emerges from a purely quantum theory of gravity.

The unphysicality of Hilbert spaces

Abstract:We show that Hilbert spaces should not be considered the ``correct'' spaces to represent quantum states mathematically. We first prove that the requirements posited by complex inner product spaces are physically justified. We then show that completeness in the infinite-dimensional case requires the inclusion of states with infinite expectations, coordinate transformations that take finite expectations to infinite ones and vice-versa, and time evolutions that transform finite expectations to infinite ones in finite time. This makes Hilbert spaces physically unsound as they model a potential infinity as an actual infinity. We suspect that at least some problems in quantum theory related to infinities may be ultimately caused by the wrong space being used. We strongly believe a better solution can be found, and we look at Schwartz spaces for inspiration, as, among other things, they guarantee that the expectation of all polynomials of position and momentum are finite, their elements are uniquely identified by these expectations, and they are the only space closed under Fourier transform.

Abstract:We take our world to be an objective reality, but is it? The assumption that the physical world exists in and of itself has struggled to assimilate the findings of modern physics for some time now. For example, an objective space and time would just "be", but in relativity, space contracts and time dilates. Likewise objective "things" should just inherently exist, but the entities of quantum theory are probability of existence smears, that spread, tunnel, superpose and entangle in physically impossible ways. Cosmology even tells us that our entire physical universe just "popped up", from nowhere, about 14 billion years ago. This is not how an objectively real world should behave! Yet traditional alternatives don't work much better. That the world is just an illusion of the mind doesn't explain its consistent realism and Descartes dualism, that another reality beyond the physical exists, just doubles the existential problem. It is time to consider an option we might normally dismiss out of hand. This essay explores the virtual reality conjecture, that the physical world is the digital output of non-physical quantum processing. It finds it neither illogical, nor unscientific, nor incompatible with current physics. In this model, quantum entities are programs, movement is the transfer of processing, interactions are processing overloads and the fields of physics are network properties. It has no empty space, no singularities and all the conservations of physics just conserve processing. Its prediction, that the collision of high frequency light in a vacuum can create permanent matter, will test it. If the physical world has the properties of a processing output, physics must rewrite the story behind its equations.

Abstract:There are pressures that are coming from a number of quarters in quantum cosmology to view space or space-time as an emergent structure. But in recent years in the foundations of standard, non-relativistic quantum mechanics, interpretations have emerged that treat space as emergent. My primary purpose is (i) to make explicit the considerations stemming from quantum mechanics alone, that are pushing in the direction of viewing space (or space-time) as an emergent structure, and (ii)to clarify exactly what it means to say that space is emergent in the sense that this chapter is interested inhere. Itdoes that by presenting some simple low-dimensional models that reproduce central features of quantum phenomena, and analyzing the examples with attention to the difference between two different kinds of explanation: one in which the correlations emerge from a more fundamental (and not ultimately spatial) description and one in which correlations are explained by influences that pass through the space in which the correlated events are situated.

Abstract:Human cognition is a complex process facilitated by the intricate architecture of human brain. However, human cognition is often reduced to quantum theory based events in principle because of their correlative conjectures for the purpose of analysis for reciprocal understanding. In this paper, we begin our analysis of human cognition via formal methods and proceed towards quantum theories. Human cognition often violate classic probabilities on which formal representation of conceptual spaces are built. Further, geometric representation of conceptual spaces proposed by Gardenfors discusses the underlying content but lacks a systematic approach (Gardenfors, 2000; Kitto et. al, 2012). However, the aforementioned views are not contradictory but different perspective with a gap towards sufficient understanding of human cognitive process. A comprehensive and systematic approach to model a relatively complex scenario can be addressed by vector space approach of conceptual spaces as discussed in literature. In this research, we have proposed an approach that uses both formal representation and Gardenfors geometric approach. The proposed model of high dimensional formal representation of conceptual space is mathematically analysed and inferred to exhibit quantum aspects. Also, the proposed model achieves cognition, in particular, consciousness. We have demonstrated this process of achieving consciousness with a constructive learning scenario. We have also proposed an algorithm for conceptual scaling of a real world scenario under different quality dimensions to obtain a conceptual scale.

Abstract:Spacetime is represented by ordered sequences of topologically closed Poincare sections of the primary space constructed of primary empty cells. These mappings are constrained to provide homeomorphic structures serving as frames of reference in order to account for the successive positions of any objects present in the system. Mappings from one to the next section involve morphisms of the general structures. Discrete properties of the lattice allow the prediction of scales at which microscopic to cosmic structures should occur. Deformations of primary cells by exchange of empty set cells allow a cell to be mapped into an image cell in the next section as far as mapped cells remain homeomorphic. If a deformation involves a fractal transformation to objects, there occurs a change in the dimension of the cell and the homeomorphism is not conserved. The fractal kernel stands for a "particle" and the reduction of its volume is compensated by morphic changes of a finite number of surrounding cells. Quanta of distances and quanta of fractality are demonstrated. The interaction of a moving particle-like deformation with the surrounding lattice involves a fractal decomposition process that supports the existence and properties of previously postulated inerton clouds as associated to particles. Experimental evidence and further possibilities of the existence of inertons are proposed.

Abstract:Although the present paper looks upon the formal apparatus of quantum mechanics as a calculus of correlations, it goes beyond a purely operationalist interpretation. Having established the consistency of the correlations with the existence of their correlata (measurement outcomes), and having justified the distinction between a domain in which outcome-indicating events occur and a domain whose properties only exist if their existence is indicated by such events, it explains the difference between the two domains as essentially the difference between the manifested world and its manifestation. A single, intrinsically undifferentiated Being manifests the macroworld by entering into reflexive spatial relations. This atemporal process implies a new kind of causality and sheds new light on the mysterious nonlocality of quantum mechanics. Unlike other realist interpretations, which proceed from an evolving-states formulation, the present interpretation proceeds from Feynman's formulation of the theory, and it introduces a new interpretive principle, replacing the collapse postulate and the eigenvalue--eigenstate link of evolving-states formulations. Applied to alternatives involving distinctions between regions of space, this principle implies that the spatiotemporal differentiation of the physical world is incomplete. Applied to alternatives involving distinctions between things, it warrants the claim that, intrinsically, all fundamental particles are identical in the strong sense of numerical identical. They are the aforementioned intrinsically undifferentiated Being, which manifests the macroworld by entering into reflexive spatial relations.

A Non-Causal Reconceptualization of Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:Quantum field theory currently has a single standard mathematical characterization (the Standard Model), but no single accepted conceptual framework to interpret the mathematics. Many of these conceptualizations rely on intuitive concepts carried over from classical physics (such as "particle" and "causality"). In this paper, instead of relying on classical concepts we attempt to infer a conceptualization directly from the mathematics. This reconceptualization leads to a physical reinterpretation of the paths involved in the Standard Model's action integral as traces of an accumulative process that occurs within an "extraverse", of which our observable spacetime is a single "slice". We briefly outline a rigorous mathematical model which validates the physical reinterpretation, and leads to predictions that are potentially verifiable by experiment. We contrast our model with other popular interpretations of quantum mechanics. We describe some of the metaphysical consequences of our proposed perspective. Finally we present some speculations about an alternative approach that could possibly lead to a more satisfying, intuitively-graspable theory.

Abstract:The question of what ontological message (if any) is encoded in the formalism of contemporary physics is, to say the least, controversial. The reasons for this state of affairs are psychological and neurobiological. The processes by which the visual world is constructed by our minds, predispose us towards concepts of space, time, and substance that are inconsistent with the spatiotemporal and substantial aspects of the quantum world. In the first part of this chapter, the latter are extracted from the quantum formalism. The nature of a world that is fundamentally and irreducibly described by a probability algorithm is determined. The neurobiological processes responsible for the mismatch between our "natural" concepts of space, time, and substance and the corresponding aspects of the quantum world are discussed in the second part. These natural concepts give rise to pseudoproblems that foil our attempts to make ontological sense of quantum mechanics. If certain psychologically motivated but physically unwarranted assumptions are discarded (in particular our dogged insistence on obtruding upon the quantum world the intrinsically and completely differentiated spatiotemporal background of classical physics), we are in a position to see why our fundamental physical theory is a probability algorithm, and to solve the remaining interpretational problems.

Abstract:The quantum world is described by a unit vector in the Hilbert space and the Hamiltonian. Do they, as abstract basis-independent objects, give a complete description of the physical world, or should we include observables like positions and momenta and the decomposition into subsystems? According to "Hilbert-space fundamentalism" they give a complete description, and all other features of the physical world emerge from them (Carroll, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.09780" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.09780">arXiv:2103.09780</a>). This thesis was previously refuted in (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2102.08620" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.08620">arXiv:2102.08620</a>) in full generality. But being an abstract non-uniqueness proof, and not a constructive one, it may not be convincing enough to the busy reader who wants to avoid mathematical details. Here I give a simpler, intuitive and constructive refutation, by showing that concrete physically distinct worlds can be described by the same unit vector and evolve according to the same law.

Quantum Universe and its Elusive Classicality

Abstract:The article explores challenges presented by revelations in physics and the questions they provoke concerning reality. It sheds light on the disparity between the indefinite nature of quantum reality and our perception of classical reality. The necessity for transition from the quantum to classical reality is underscored, alongside difficulties of observer intervention and the complexities introduced by the objective collapse theory. The work introduces a pioneering approach of decoherence within the framework of universal wave function density matrices. It deploys entanglement among three primary quantum subsystems: mass particles, massless particles, and the human body system. This gives rise to a Von Neumann chain of correlated systems, wherein neglecting one system renders the other two in mixed states. Here the cohered massless system and the animate being constitute subjects of our perceptions. Within the body, the distributions of quantum particle wave packets are highly localized due to entanglement and chemical potential, satisfying the Ehrenfest condition, wherein the thermal deBroglie wavelength scale is considerably smaller than their domain in the body. Thus, each microstate of the body quantum particle ensemble can be analogously represented as a statistical mechanics particle ensemble or likened to microstates in the Debye statistical model. In the statistical mechanics perspective, life represents a macrostate characterized by thermodynamics parameters, and chemical potential. The life macrostate autonomously processes an environment corresponding to a mixed state alternative of its entangled quantum world counterpart, which appears in the stream of consciousness. The quantum universe persists, evolving deterministically, and the classical (macroscopic) universe is its realization statistical by the fundamental predicate of life discerned by the brain; our elusive world.

Abstract:We show that the quantum wavefunctional can be seen as a set of classical fields on the 3D space aggregated by a measure. We obtain a complete description of the wavefunctional in terms of classical local beables. With this correspondence, classical explanations of the macro level and of probabilities transfer almost directly to the quantum. A key difference is that, in quantum theory, the classical states coexist in parallel, so the probabilities come from self-location uncertainty. We show that these states are distributed according to the Born rule. The coexistence of classical states implies that there are many worlds, even if we assume the collapse postulate. This leads automatically to a new version of the many-worlds interpretation in which the major objections are addressed naturally. We show that background-free quantum gravity provides additional support for this proposal and suggests why branching happens toward the future.

Abstract:It is argued that important information on the emergence of space is hidden at the quark/hadron level. The arguments follow from the acceptance of the conception that space is an attribute of matter. They involve in particular the discussion of possibly relevant mass and distance scales, the generalization of the concept of mass as suggested by the phase-space-based explanation of the rishon model, and the phenomenological conclusions on the structure of excited baryons that are implied by baryon spectroscopy. A counterpart of the Eddington-Weinberg relation concerning Regge towers of hadronic resonances is noted.

Abstract:An external magnetic field in configuration space coupled to quantum dynamics induces noncommutativity in its velocity momentum space. By phase space duality, an external vector potential in the conjugate momentum sector of the system induces noncommutativity in its configuration space. Such a rationale for noncommutativity is explored herein for an arbitrary configuration space of Euclidean geometry. Ordinary quantum mechanics with a commutative configuration space is revisited first. Through the introduction of an arbitrary positive definite *-product, a one-to-one correspondence between the Hilbert space of abstract quantum states and that of the enveloping algebra of the position quantum operators is identified. A parallel discussion is then presented when configuration space is noncommutative, and thoroughly analysed when the conjugate magnetic field is momentum independent and nondegenerate. Once again the space of quantum states may be identified with the enveloping algebra of the noncommutative position quantum operators. Furthermore, when the positive definite *-product is adapted to the conjugate magnetic field, the coordinate operators span a Fock algebra of which the coherent states are the analogues of the structureless points in a commutative configuration space. These results generalise and justify a posteriori within ordinary canonical quantisation the heuristic approach to quantum mechanics in the noncommutative Euclidean plane as constructed and developed by F. G. Scholtz and his collaborators.

Abstract:We explore the canonical description of a scalar field in 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space as a parametrized field theory on an extended phase space that includes additional embedding fields that characterize spacetime hypersurfaces X relative to which the scalar field is described. This theory is quantized via the Dirac prescription and physical states of the theory are used to define conditional wave functionals |ψφ[X]⟩ interpreted as the state of the field relative to the hypersurface X , thereby extending the Page-Wootters formalism to quantum field theory. It is shown that this conditional wave functional satisfies the Tomonaga-Schwinger equation, thus demonstrating the formal equivalence between this extended Page-Wootters formalism and standard quantum field theory. We also construct relational Dirac observables and define a quantum deparametrization of the physical Hilbert space leading to a relational Heisenberg picture, which are both shown to be unitarily equivalent to the Page-Wootters formalism. Moreover, by treating hypersurfaces as quantum reference frames, we extend recently developed quantum frame transformations to changes between classical and nonclassical hypersurfaces. Does Bell's theorem apply if perceived pseudo-Euclidean space is emergent?

Abstract:Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) showed that it is possible to predict with certainty the value of a property without disturbing the object in question. In contrast, Quantum Mechanics (QM) holds that if different measurement setups cannot coexist, then predictions about those can neither. Using an EPR-inspired experiment with distantly separated measurements on pairs of entangled spinning particles, Bell proved that no local hidden variable (HV) theory can describe reality in more detail than QM. However, it is possible to conceive a viable HV theory based on the assumption that the perceived structure of spacetime is emergent from a hidden curved spacetime. According to this theory, locality can be maintained for each of the measurements while what is perceived as non-locality can be ascribed to the emergence of spacetime correlations between the instruments of the two parties. The theory predicts correlations that agree with QM, provided that the hidden spacetime has three spatial dimensions. If it had fewer than three dimensions, the CHSH inequality would not be violated and if more, Tsirelson's bound would be violated. According to this HV theory, the laboratory frame of reference is a corollary of correlations of the type that are the subject of Bell's thought experiment.
