Abstract:Each nontrivial shell (i.e., subconstituent) of the Johnson association scheme J(v,k) is known to be a commutative association scheme which is the product of two smaller Johnson association schemes. The concept of t-designs in one shell of J(v,k) was naturally defined and studied by Martin in the context of mixed t-designs. The purpose of this paper is to try to push this study a bit further. First we give a direct proof of the theorem that if (Y,w) is a relative t-design in J(v,k) on p shells then the part in each shell must be a weighted (t−p+1)-design in the shell. In particular, it is a mixed (t−p+1)-design in one shell if the weight function is constant on each shell. We also present another approach that makes use of the Terwilliger algebra, based on the work of Tanaka. This result is essentially proved by Martin in 1998, but the proof there contains a small gap which is repaired in this paper. We also study the existence problems of tight 2-, 3- and 4-designs on one shell of Johnson association scheme J(v,k) with small parameters, say v≤1000, thereby expanding the range of search in the original paper of Martin in 1998.

Abstract:Relative $t$-designs in the $n$-dimensional hypercube $\mathcal{Q}_n$ are equivalent to weighted regular $t$-wise balanced designs, which generalize combinatorial $t$-$(n,k,\lambda)$ designs by allowing multiple block sizes as well as weights. Partly motivated by the recent study on tight Euclidean $t$-designs on two concentric spheres, in this paper we discuss tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells. We show under a mild condition that such a relative $t$-design induces the structure of a coherent configuration with two fibers. Moreover, from this structure we deduce that a polynomial from the family of the Hahn hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials must have only integral simple zeros. The Terwilliger algebra is the main tool to establish these results. By explicitly evaluating the behavior of the zeros of the Hahn polynomials when they degenerate to the Hermite polynomials under an appropriate limit process, we prove a theorem which gives a partial evidence that the non-trivial tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells are rare for large $t$.

Abstract:The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs has attracted a lot of attention for both directions. It is well known that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. In this paper, by determining the weight distributions of two classes of linear codes, we derive infinite families of $2$-designs from the supports of codewords with a fixed weight in these codes, and explicitly obtain their parameters.

Abstract:In ``Infinite families of near MDS codes holding $t$-designs, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2020, 66(9), pp. 5419-5428'', Ding and Tang made a breakthrough in constructing the first two infinite families of NMDS codes holding $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Up to now, there are only a few known infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct new infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs. We determine the weight enumerators of the NMDS codes and prove that the NMDS codes hold $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Compared with known $t$-designs from NMDS codes, ours have different parameters. Besides, several infinite families of optimal locally recoverable codes are also derived via the NMDS codes.

Abstract:Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$ . In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4-$(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4-$(q+1,5,lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL$(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969.

Spherical designs and modular forms of the $D_4$ lattice

Abstract:In this paper, we study shells of the $D_4$ lattice with a {slight generalization} of spherical $t$-designs due to Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel, namely, the spherical design of harmonic index $T$ (spherical $T$-design for short) introduced by Delsarte-Seidel. We first observe that{, for any positive integer $m$,} the $2m$-shell of $D_4$ is an antipodal spherical $\{10,4,2\}$-design on the three dimensional sphere. We then prove that the $2$-shell, which is the $D_4$ root system, is a tight $\{10,4,2\}$-design, using the linear programming method. The uniqueness of the $D_4$ root system as an antipodal spherical $\{10,4,2\}$-design with 24 points is shown. We give two applications of the uniqueness: a decomposition of the shells of the $D_4$ lattice in terms of orthogonal transformations of the $D_4$ root system, and the uniqueness of the $D_4$ lattice as an even integral lattice of level 2 in the four dimensional Euclidean space. We also reveal a connection between the harmonic strength of the shells of the $D_4$ lattice and non-vanishing of the Fourier coefficients of a certain newform of level 2. Motivated by this, congruence relations for the Fourier coefficients are discussed.

Infinite families $2$-designs from binary projective three-weight codes

Abstract:Combinatorial designs are closely related to linear codes. In recent year, there are a lot of $t$-designs constructed from certain linear codes. In this paper, we aim to construct $2$-designs from binary three-weight codes. For any binary three-weight code $\mathcal{C}$ with length $n$, let $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})$ be the number of codewords in $\mathcal{C}$ with Hamming weight $n$, then we show that $\mathcal{C}$ holds $2$-designs when $\mathcal{C}$ is projective and $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})=1$. Furthermore, by extending some certain binary projective two-weight codes and basing on the defining set method, we construct two classes of binary projective three-weight codes which are suitable for holding $2$-designs.

Abstract:Motivated by the similarities between the theory of spherical $t$-designs and that of $t$-designs in $Q$-polynomial association schemes, we study two versions of relative $t$-designs, the counterparts of Euclidean $t$-designs for $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes. We develop the theory based on the Terwilliger algebra, which is a noncommutative associative semisimple $\mathbb{C}$-algebra associated with each vertex of an association scheme. We compute explicitly the Fisher type lower bounds on the sizes of relative $t$-designs, assuming that certain irreducible modules behave nicely. The two versions of relative $t$-designs turn out to be equivalent in the case of the Hamming schemes. From this point of view, we establish a new algebraic characterization of the Hamming schemes.

Abstract:The question as to whether there exists an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of $t$ -designs for $tgeq 2$ was answered in the recent paper [Infinite families of near MDS codes holding $t$ -designs, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 66(9) (2020)], where an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of 3-designs and an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of 2-designs were presented, but no infinite family of linear codes holding an infinite family of 4-designs was presented. Hence, the question as to whether there is an infinite family of linear codes holding an infinite family of 4-designs remains open for 71 years. This paper settles this long-standing problem by presenting an infinite family of BCH codes of length $2^{2m+1}+1$ over ${mathrm {GF}}(2^{2m+1})$ holding an infinite family of 4- $(2^{2m+1}+1, 6, 2^{2m}-4)$ designs. This paper also provides another solution to the first question, as some of the BCH codes presented in this paper are also near MDS. Moreover, an infinite family of linear codes holding the spherical geometry design $S(3, 5, 4^{m}+1)$ is presented. The new direction of searching for $t$ -designs with elementary symmetric polynomials will be further advanced.

Abstract:We provide a method to construct $t$-designs from weighing matrices and walk-regular graphs. One instance of our method can produce a $3$-design from any (symmetric or skew-symmetric) conference matrix, thereby providing a partial answer to a question of Gunderson and Semeraro JCTB 2017. We explore variations of our method on some matrices that satisfy certain combinatorial restrictions. In particular, we show that there exist various infinite families of partially balanced incomplete block designs with block size four on the binary Hamming schemes and the $3$-class association schemes attached to symmetric designs, and regular pairwise balanced designs with block sizes three and four.

Abstract:It is known that there is a close analogy between the two relations “Euclidean t -designs vs. spherical t -designs” and “relative t -designs in binary Hamming association schemes vs. combinatorial t -designs.” We first look at this analogy and survey the known results, putting emphasis on the study of tight relative t -designs in certain Q -polynomial association schemes. We then specifically study tight relative 2-designs on two shells in binary Hamming association schemes H ( n , 2) and Johnson association schemes J ( v , k ). The purpose of this paper is to convince the reader that there is a rich theory even for these special cases and that the time is ripe to study tight relative t -designs more systematically for general Q -polynomial association schemes.

Abstract: The concept of spherical $t$-design, which is a finite subset of the unit sphere, was introduced by Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel (1977). The concept of Euclidean $t$-design, which is a two step generalization of spherical design in the sense that it is a finite weighted subset of Euclidean space, by Neumaier-Seidel (1988). We first review these two concepts, as well as the concept of tight $t$-design, i.e., the one whose cardinality reaches the natural lower bound. We are interested in $t$-designs (spherical or Euclidean) which are either tight or close to tight. As is well known by Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel (1977), in the study of spherical $t$-designs and in particular of those which are either tight or close to tight, association schemes play important roles. The main purpose of this paper is to show that in the study of Euclidean $t$-designs and in particular of those which are either tight or close to tight, coherent configurations play important roles. Here, coherent configuration is a purely combinatorial concept defined by D. G. Higman, and is obtained by axiomatizing the properties of general, not necessarily transitive, permutation groups, in the same way as association scheme was obtained by axiomatizing the properties of transitive permutation groups. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that Euclidean $t$-designs satisfying certain conditions give the structure of coherent configurations. Moreover we study the classification problems of Euclidean 4-designs on two concentric spheres with certain additional conditions.

Abstract:Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $2$-designs as special cases. Furthermore, we confirmed Conjecture $3$ in Ding and Tang (arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1903.07375" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.07375">1903.07375</a>, 2019).

Projective toric designs, quantum state designs, and mutually unbiased bases

Abstract:Toric $t$-designs, or equivalently $t$-designs on the diagonal subgroup of the unitary group, are sets of points on the torus over which sums reproduce integrals of degree $t$ monomials over the full torus. Motivated by the projective structure of quantum mechanics, we develop the notion of $t$-designs on the projective torus, which have a much more restricted structure than their counterparts on full tori. We provide various new constructions of toric and projective toric designs and prove bounds on their size. We draw connections between projective toric designs and a diverse set of mathematical objects, including difference and Sidon sets from the field of additive combinatorics, symmetric, informationally complete positive operator valued measures and complete sets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) from quantum information theory, and crystal ball sequences of certain root lattices. Using these connections, we prove bounds on the maximal size of dense $B_t \bmod m$ sets. We also use projective toric designs to construct families of quantum state designs. In particular, we construct families of (uniformly-weighted) quantum state $2$-designs in dimension $d$ of size exactly $d(d+1)$ that do not form complete sets of MUBs, thereby disproving a conjecture concerning the relationship between designs and MUBs (Zhu 2015). We then propose a modification of Zhu's conjecture and discuss potential paths towards proving this conjecture. We prove a fundamental distinction between complete sets of MUBs in prime-power dimensions versus in dimension $6$ (and, we conjecture, in all non-prime-power dimensions), the distinction relating to group structure of the corresponding projective toric design. Finally, we discuss many open questions about the properties of these projective toric designs and how they relate to other questions in number theory, geometry, and quantum information.

Abstract:A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive special lower bounds for $t=1$ and $t=2$ by a power moment method. For general $n,t$ we give a %linear programming lower bound . For $n\ge 4$ and $t=2,$ this bound is strong enough to show a lower bound on the size of such $t$-designs of $n(n-1)\dots (n-t+1),$ which is best possible when sharply $t$-transitive sets of permutations exist. This shows, in particular, that tight $2$-designs do not exist.

On a lifting of $t$-adic symmetric multiple zeta values

Abstract:The $t$-adic symmetric multiple zeta value is a generalization of the symmetric multiple zeta value from the perspective of the Kaneko-Zagier conjecture. In this paper, we introduce a further generalization with a new parameter $s$, which we call the $(s,t)$-adic symmetric multiple zeta value. Then, the $(s,t)$-adic version of the $t$-adic double shuffle relations, duality and cyclic sum formula are established. A finite counterpart of the $(s,t)$-adic symmetric multiple zeta value is also discussed.
