Abstract:Combinatorial designs are closely related to linear codes. In recent year, there are a lot of $t$-designs constructed from certain linear codes. In this paper, we aim to construct $2$-designs from binary three-weight codes. For any binary three-weight code $\mathcal{C}$ with length $n$, let $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})$ be the number of codewords in $\mathcal{C}$ with Hamming weight $n$, then we show that $\mathcal{C}$ holds $2$-designs when $\mathcal{C}$ is projective and $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})=1$. Furthermore, by extending some certain binary projective two-weight codes and basing on the defining set method, we construct two classes of binary projective three-weight codes which are suitable for holding $2$-designs.

Abstract:Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$ . In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4-$(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4-$(q+1,5,lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL$(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969.

Abstract:In ``Infinite families of near MDS codes holding $t$-designs, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 2020, 66(9), pp. 5419-5428'', Ding and Tang made a breakthrough in constructing the first two infinite families of NMDS codes holding $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Up to now, there are only a few known infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct new infinite families of NMDS codes holding $t$-designs. We determine the weight enumerators of the NMDS codes and prove that the NMDS codes hold $2$-designs or $3$-designs. Compared with known $t$-designs from NMDS codes, ours have different parameters. Besides, several infinite families of optimal locally recoverable codes are also derived via the NMDS codes.

Abstract:The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs has attracted a lot of attention for both directions. It is well known that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. In this paper, by determining the weight distributions of two classes of linear codes, we derive infinite families of $2$-designs from the supports of codewords with a fixed weight in these codes, and explicitly obtain their parameters.

Abstract:Interplay between coding theory and combinatorial $t$-designs has been a hot topic for many years for combinatorialists and coding theorists. Some infinite families of cyclic codes supporting infinite families of $3$-designs have been constructed in the past 50 years. However, no infinite family of negacyclic codes supporting an infinite family of $3$-designs has been reported in the literature. This is the main motivation of this paper. Let $q=p^m$, where $p$ is an odd prime and $m \geq 2$ is an integer. The objective of this paper is to present an infinite family of cyclic codes over $\gf(q)$ supporting an infinite family of $3$-designs and two infinite families of negacyclic codes over $\gf(q^2)$ supporting two infinite families of $3$-designs. The parameters and the weight distributions of these codes are determined. The subfield subcodes of these negacyclic codes over $\gf(q)$ are studied. Three infinite families of almost MDS codes are also presented. A constacyclic code over GF($4$) supporting a $4$-design and six open problems are also presented in this paper.

Abstract:The question as to whether there exists an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of $t$ -designs for $tgeq 2$ was answered in the recent paper [Infinite families of near MDS codes holding $t$ -designs, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 66(9) (2020)], where an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of 3-designs and an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of 2-designs were presented, but no infinite family of linear codes holding an infinite family of 4-designs was presented. Hence, the question as to whether there is an infinite family of linear codes holding an infinite family of 4-designs remains open for 71 years. This paper settles this long-standing problem by presenting an infinite family of BCH codes of length $2^{2m+1}+1$ over ${mathrm {GF}}(2^{2m+1})$ holding an infinite family of 4- $(2^{2m+1}+1, 6, 2^{2m}-4)$ designs. This paper also provides another solution to the first question, as some of the BCH codes presented in this paper are also near MDS. Moreover, an infinite family of linear codes holding the spherical geometry design $S(3, 5, 4^{m}+1)$ is presented. The new direction of searching for $t$ -designs with elementary symmetric polynomials will be further advanced.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a two and three-weight ternary code. Furthermore, we assume that $C_\ell$ are $t$-designs for all $\ell$ by the Assmus--Mattson theorem. We show that $t \leq 5$. As a corollary, we provide a new characterization of the (extended) ternary Golay code.

Abstract:The dual codes of the ternary linear codes of the residual designs of biplanes on 56 points are used to prove the nonexistence of quasi-symmetric 2-$(56,12,9)$ and 2-$(57,12,11)$ designs with intersection numbers 0 and 3, and the nonexistence of a 2-$(267,57,12)$ quasi-3 design. The nonexistence of a 2-$(149,37,9)$ quasi-3 design is also proved.

Abstract:Pseudo-geometric designs are combinatorial designs which share the same parameters as a finite geometry design, but which are not isomorphic to that design. As far as we know, many pseudo-geometric designs have been constructed by the methods of finite geometries and combinatorics. However, none of pseudo-geometric designs with the parameters $S\left (2, q+1,(q^n-1)/(q-1)\right )$ is constructed by the approach of coding theory. In this paper, we use cyclic codes to construct pseudo-geometric designs. We firstly present a family of ternary cyclic codes from the $m$-sequences with Welch-type decimation $d=2\cdot 3^{(n-1)/2}+1$, and obtain some infinite family of 2-designs and a family of Steiner systems $S\left (2, 4, (3^n-1)/2\right )$ using these cyclic codes and their duals. Moreover, the parameters of these cyclic codes and their shortened codes are also determined. Some of those ternary codes are optimal or almost optimal. Finally, we show that one of these obtained Steiner systems is inequivalent to the point-line design of the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,3)$ and thus is a pseudo-geometric design.

Abstract:We construct a ternary [49,25,7] code from the row span of a Jacobsthal matrix. It is equivalent to a Generalized Quadratic Residue (GQR) code in the sense of van Lint and MacWilliams (1978). These codes are the abelian generalizations of the quadratic residue (QR) codes which are cyclic. The union of the [50,25,8] extension of the said code and its dual supports a 3-(50,14,1248) design. The automorphism group of the latter design is a double cover of the permutation part of the automorphism group of the [50,25,8] code, which is isomorphic to $P{\Sigma}L(2,49).$ Other weights in this code, other GQR codes, and other QR codes yield other 3-designs by the same process. A simple group action argument is provided to explain this behaviour of isodual codes.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce some new polynomials associated to linear codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. In particular, we introduce the notion of split complete Jacobi polynomials attached to multiple sets of coordinate places of a linear code over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, and give the MacWilliams type identity for it. We also give the notion of generalized $q$-colored $t$-designs. As an application of the generalized $q$-colored $t$-designs, we derive a formula that obtains the split complete Jacobi polynomials of a linear code over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$.Moreover, we define the concept of colored packing (resp. covering) designs. Finally, we give some coding theoretical applications of the colored designs for Type~III and Type~IV codes.

Abstract:Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $2$-designs as special cases. Furthermore, we confirmed Conjecture $3$ in Ding and Tang (arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1903.07375" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.07375">1903.07375</a>, 2019).

Abstract:For a long time, the literature has demonstrated that designs and codes are exciting topics for combinatorics and coding theory. Linear codes and t-designs are, in fact, closely related. In recent years, significant results have been derived in the connection framework between codes and combinatorial designs. The most relevant recent contribution is the 71-year breakthrough in discovering by C. Ding and C. Tang of an infinite family of linear codes supporting an infinite family of 4-designs. This paper deals with codes from designs. It considers a class of cyclic codes from the support designs of affine invariant codes and studies ternary cyclic codes. These codes hold 2-designs, contain original affine invariant codes and many other affine-invariant subcodes. The dimension and a lower bound of these ternary cyclic codes are determined.
