Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:The heating of magnetized plasma by propagation of Alfven waves is calculated as a function of the magnetic field spectral density. The results can be applied to evaluate the heating power of the solar corona at known data from satellites' magnetometers. This heating rate can be incorporated in global models for heating of the solar corona and creation of the solar wind. The final formula for the heating power is illustrated with a model spectral density of the magnetic field obtained by analysis of the Voyager 1 mission results. The influence of high frequency dissipative modes is also taken into account and it is concluded that for evaluation of the total coronal heating it is necessary to know the spectral density of the fluctuating component of the magnetic field up to the frequency of electron-proton collisions.

Abstract:Chebyshev polynomials and their modifications are attributes of various fields of mathematics. In particular, they are generating functions of the rows elements of certain Riordan matrices. In paper, we give a selection of some characteristic situations in which such matrices are involved. Using the columns and rows of these matrices, we will build the bases of the space of formal power series and the space of polynomials, the properties of which allow us to call them "Fibonacci bases".

Abstract:For $m \geq 3$, we define the $m$th order pyramidal number by \[ \mathrm{Pyr}_m(x) = \frac{1}{6} x(x+1)((m-2)x+5-m). \] In a previous paper, written by the first-, second-, and fourth-named authors, all solutions to the equation $\mathrm{Pyr}_m(x) = y^2$ are found in positive integers $x$ and $y$, for $6 \leq m \leq 100$. In this paper, we consider the question of higher powers, and find all solutions to the equation $\mathrm{Pyr}_m(x) = y^n$ in positive integers $x$, $y$, and $n$, with $n \geq 3$, and $5 \leq m \leq 50$. We reduce the problem to a study of systems of binomial Thue equations, and use a combination of local arguments, the modular method via Frey curves, and bounds arising from linear forms in logarithms to solve the problem.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel direct elementary proof for Fermat's Last Theorem. We use algebra, modular math, and binomial series to develop inherent mathematical relationships hidden within Fermat's Last Theorem. With these derived relationships, we are able to develop general pattern applicable for all positive integers of n. Finally, we are able to confirm and complete the direct proof for Fermat's Diophantine equation for all n.

Abstract:Let {F(n)} be the Fibonacci sequence defined by F0 = 0, F1 = 1, F(n) + 1 = F(n) + F(n-1) (n greater-than-or-equal-to 1). It is well known that F(p-)(5/p) = 0 (mod p) for any odd prime p, where (-) denotes the Legendre symbol. In 1960 D.D. Wall [13] asked whether p2/F(p-)(5/p) is always impossible; up to now this is still open. In this paper the sum [GRAPHICS] is expressed in terms of Fibonacci numbers. As applications we obtain a new formula for the Fibonacci quotient F(p-)(5/p)/p and a criterion for the relation p/F(p-1)/4 (if p = 1 (mod 4)), where p not-equal 5 is an odd prime. We also prove that the affirmative answer to Wall's question implies the first case of FLT (Fermat's last theorem); from this it follows that the first case of FLT holds for those exponents which are (odd) Fibonacci primes or Lucas primes.

Abstract:After the introduction, in section 2 we state the well known parametric formulas that describe the entire family of Pythagorean triples. In section 3, we list four well known results from number theory, used later in the paper. in section 2, we prove two propositions. Proposition 1 says that the diophantine equation z^2=x^4+4y^4, has no solutions in positive integers x,y, and z. We then use Proposition 1, to prove the insolvability of a certain four-variable diophantine system, which is Proposition 2. In Section 5, we present some examplesof pairs of Pythagorean triangles with a common hypotenuse. In Section 6, we use Proposition 2 to prove Theorem 1: There exists no pair of Pythagorean triangles such that the leg of largest length in the first triangle is the hypotenuse of the second triangle; and in addition, with the leg of smallest length in the first triangle; having the same length as a leg in the second triangle. in Section 7, we present information on Pythagorean boxes, and we describe how to generate infinitely many Pythagorean boxes with a face diagonal of integral length. Finally, in Section 8, we apply Proposition 2 to prove Theorem 2: There exists no Pythagorean box with a pair of congruent (or opposite) faces being squares. And with the four diagonals of equal length in another pair of opposite faces, also having integral length.

Abstract:For an arbitrary positive integer $p$, Landen's formula is extended to express theta function with modulus $p\tau$ by $p$ product of theta functions with $\tau$, which is applied to several examples. Next it is shown that double product of theta functions of genus $g=1$ is written by a sum of $g=2$ theta functions, which is a subset having a special period matrix of $\tau_{11}=\tau_{22}$. Several applied examples are shown, which include the cubic identity of Borwein and Borwein.

Abstract:Denote by $\Sigma n^m$ the sum of the $m$-th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^m+2^m+\ldots +n^m$. Similarly let $\Sigma^r n^m$ be the $r$-fold sum of the $m$-th powers of the first $n$ positive integers, defined such that $\Sigma^0 n^{m}=n^m$, and then recursively by $\Sigma^{r+1} n^{m}=\Sigma^{r} 1^{m}+\Sigma^{r} 2^{m}+\ldots + \Sigma^{r} n^{m}$. During the early 17th-century, polynomial expressions for the sums $\Sigma^r n^m$ and their factorisation and polynomial basis representation properties were examined by Johann Faulhaber, who published some remarkable theorems relating to these $r$-fold sums in his Academia Algebrae (1631). In this paper we consider families of polynomials related to the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials which naturally lend themselves to representing sums and differences of integer powers, as well as $\Sigma^r n^m$. Using summations over polynomial basis representations for monomials we generalise this sum for any polynomial $q(x)\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$, encountering some interesting coefficient families in the process. Other results include using our polynomial expressions to state some theorems of Fermat, where in particular, we obtain an explicit expression for the quotient in Fermat's Little Theorem. In the final two sections we examine these sums in the context of the three pairs of Stirling number varieties and binomial decompositions. We also derive an expression for $\Sigma n^m$ in terms of the Stirling numbers and Pochhammer symbols, leading to a seemingly new relation between the Stirling numbers and the Bernoulli numbers.

Abstract:The anomalous properties of High-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates are investigated both in the normal state and in the superconducting state. In particular, we pay atte ntion to the pseudogap in the normal state and the phase transition from the pse udogap state to the superconducting state. The pseudogap phenomena observed in cuprates are naturally understood as a precursor of the strong coupling superconductivity. We have previously show n by using the self-consistent T-matrix calculation that the pseudogap is a resu lt of the strong superconducting fluctuations which are accompanied by the stron g coupling superconductivity in quasi-two dimensional systems [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn . {\bf68} (1999) 2999.]. We extend the scenario to the superconducting state. The close relation between the pseudogap state and the superconducting state is pointed out. Once t he superconducting phase transition occurs, the superconducting order parameter rapidly grows rather than the result of BCS theory. With the rapid growth of the order parameter, the gap structure becomes sharp, while it is remarkably broad in the pseudogap state. The characteristic energy scale of the gap does not chan ge. These results well explain the phase transition observed in the spectroscopi c measurements. Further, we calculate the magnetic and transport properties which show the pseu dogap phenomena. The comprehensive understanding of the NMR, the neutron scatter ing, the optical conductivity and the London penetration depth is obtained both in the pseudogap state and in the superconducting state.

Elementary Formulas for Greatest Common Divisors and Semiprime Factors

Abstract:We present new formulas for computing greatest common divisors (GCDs) and extracting the prime factors of semiprimes using only elementary arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, floored division, and exponentiation. Our GCD formula simplifies a formula of Mazzanti and is derived using Kronecker substitution techniques from our earlier research. By combining this GCD formula with our recent result on an arithmetic term for $\sqrt{n}$, we derive explicit expressions for the prime factors of a semiprime $n=p q$.

The first is to introduce several polynomials of one variable as well as two variables defined on the positive integers with values as congruent numbers. The second is to present connections between Pythagorean triples and the Pell equation $x^2-dy^2=1$ plus its analogous counterpart $x^2-dy^2=-1$ which give rise to congruent numbers n with arbitrarily many prime factors.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the diophantine equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ where $k$ is a positive integer $\geq 2$, and consider its applications. While the complete solution of the equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ in positive rational numbers is already known when $k=2$ or $3$, till now only one numerical solution of the equation in positive rational numbers has been published when $k=4$, and no nontrivial solution is known when $k \geq 5$. We describe a method of generating infinitely many positive rational solutions of the equation when $k=4$. We use the positive rational solutions of the equation with $k=2,\, 3$ or 4 to produce numerical curios involving square roots, cube roots and fourth roots, and as another application of these solutions, we show how to construct examples of geometric series with an interesting property.
