Abstract:We prove optimal Fourier restriction estimates for the unit sphere in two-dimensional Euclidean space. Our results yield weighted versions of the 2D Restriction Conjecture involving the weight functions $(1+|x|)^\alpha(1+|y|)^\beta$ and $(1+|x|+|y|)^\gamma$ with $\alpha,\beta,\gamma\geq 0$.

Abstract:This article explores weighted $(L^p, L^q)$ inequalities for the Fourier transform in rank one Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. We establish both necessary and sufficient conditions for these inequalities to hold. To prove the weighted Fourier inequalities, we apply restriction theorems on symmetric spaces and utilize Calder{ó}n's estimate for sublinear operators. While establishing the necessary conditions, we demonstrate that Harish-Chandra's elementary spherical functions play a crucial role in this setting. Furthermore, we apply our findings to derive Fourier inequalities with polynomial and exponential weights.

Abstract:In dimensions $d \in \{3,4,5,6,7\}$, we prove that the constant functions on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ maximize the weighted adjoint Fourier restriction inequality $$ \left| \int_{\mathbb{R}^d} |\widehat{f\sigma}(x)|^4\,\big(1 + g(x)\big)\,d x\right|^{1/4} \leq {\bf C} \, \|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})}\,,$$ where $\sigma$ is the surface measure on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, for a suitable class of bounded perturbations $g:\mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{C}$. In such cases we also fully classify the complex-valued maximizers of the inequality. In the unperturbed setting ($g = {\bf 0}$), this was established by Foschi ($d=3$) and by the first and third authors ($d \in \{4,5,6,7\}$) in 2015. Our methods also yield a new sharp adjoint restriction inequality on $\mathbb S^7\subset \mathbb R^8$.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to expose and investigate natural phase-space formulations of two longstanding problems in the restriction theory of the Fourier transform. These problems, often referred to as the Stein and Mizohata--Takeuchi conjectures, assert that Fourier extension operators associated with rather general (codimension 1) submanifolds of euclidean space, may be effectively controlled by the classical X-ray transform via weighted $L^2$ inequalities. Our phase-space formulations, which have their origins in recent work of Dendrinos, Mustata and Vitturi, expose close connections with a conjecture of Flandrin from time-frequency analysis, and rest on the identification of an explicit "geometric" Wigner transform associated with an arbitrary (smooth strictly convex) submanifold $S$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our main results are certain natural "Sobolev variants" of the Stein and Mizohata--Takeuchi conjectures, and involve estimating the Sobolev norms of such Wigner transforms by geometric forms of classical bilinear fractional integrals. Our broad geometric framework allows us to explore the role of the curvature of the submanifold in these problems, and in particular we obtain bounds that are independent of any lower bound on the curvature; a feature that is uncommon in the wider restriction theory of the Fourier transform. Finally, we provide a further illustration of the effectiveness of our analysis by establishing a form of Flandrin's conjecture in the plane with an $\varepsilon$-loss. While our perspective comes primarily from euclidean harmonic analysis, the procedure used for constructing phase-space representations of extension operators is well-known in optics.

Abstract:Let ${{\bf R}_{\mathbb S^{d-1}}}(p\to q)$ denote the best constant for the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)\to L^q(\mathbb S^{d-1})$ Fourier restriction inequality to the unit sphere $\mathbb S^{d-1}$, and let ${\bf R}_{\mathbb S^{d-1}} (p\to q;\textrm{rad})$ denote the corresponding constant for radial functions. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the operator norms ${{\bf R}_{\mathbb S^{d-1}}}(p\to q)$ and ${\bf R}_{\mathbb S^{d-1}} (p\to q;\textrm{rad})$ as the dimension $d$ tends to infinity. We further establish a dimension-free endpoint Stein-Tomas inequality for radial functions, together with the corresponding estimate for general functions which we prove with an $O(d^{1/2})$ dependence. Our methods rely on a uniform two-sided refinement of Stempak's asymptotic $L^p$ estimate of Bessel functions.

Uniform Fourier restriction for convex curves

Abstract:We extend the estimates for maximal Fourier restriction operators proved by Müller, Ricci, and Wright in \cite{MR3960255} and Ramos in \cite{MR4055940} to the case of arbitrary convex curves in the plane, with constants uniform in the curve. The improvement over Müller, Ricci, and Wright and Ramos is given by the removal of the $\mathcal{C}^2$ regularity condition on the curve. This requires the choice of an appropriate measure for each curve, that is suggested by an affine invariant construction of Oberlin in \cite{MR1960918}. As corollaries, we obtain a uniform Fourier restriction theorem for arbitrary convex curves, and a result on the Lebesgue points of the Fourier transform on the curve.

Abstract:This paper studies the Hardy–Littlewood–Sobolev (HLS) inequality and the Riesz transforms for fractional integration associated to weighted orthogonal polynomial expansions on spheres, balls and simplexes with weights being invariant under a general finite reflection group on Rd. The sharp index for the validity of the HLS inequality is determined and the Lp-boundedness of the Riesz transforms is established. In particular, our results extend a classical inequality of Muckenhoupt and Stein on conjugate ultraspherical polynomial expansions. Our idea is based on a new decomposition of the Dunkl–Laplace–Beltrami operator on the sphere and some sharp asymptotic estimates of the weighted Christoffel functions.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that nearly all valid, scale-invariant Fourier restriction inequalities for the paraboloid in R1+d have extremizers and that Lp-normalized extremizing sequences are precompact modulo symmetries. This result had previously been established for the case q=2. In the range where the boundedness of the restriction operator is still an open question, our result is conditional on improvements toward the restriction conjecture.

Abstract:The main result of this note is the strengthening of a quite arbitrary a priori Fourier restriction estimate to a multi-parameter maximal estimate of the same type. This allows us to discuss a certain multi-parameter Lebesgue point property of Fourier transforms, which replaces Euclidean balls by standard ellipsoids or axes-parallel rectangles. Along the lines of the same proof, we also establish a d -parameter Menshov–Paley–Zygmund-type theorem for the Fourier transform on . Such a result is interesting for because, in a sharp contrast with the one-dimensional case, the corresponding endpoint estimate (i.e., a Carleson-type theorem) is known to fail since the work of C. Fefferman in 1970. Finally, we show that a Strichartz estimate for a given homogeneous constant-coefficient linear dispersive PDE can sometimes be strengthened to a certain pseudo-differential version.

Abstract:In this note we improve, for the case of low dimensions, the known range of exponents for which constant functions are the unique maximizers for the $L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ to $L^p_{rad}L^2_{ang}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ mixed-norm Fourier extension estimate on the sphere. Moreover, we show that in the same range of exponents for which constant functions are the unique maximizers for the $L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ to $L^p_{red}L^2_{ang}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ mixed-norm Fourier extension estimates they are also local maximizers for the $L^p(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ to $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ Fourier extension estimates. As a by-product, we obtain that for the cases of dimensions $d=2,3$ constant functions are local maximizers for all $p\geq p_{\mathrm{st}}(d)$, where $p_{\mathrm{st}}$ denotes the Stein-Tomas endpoint, $p_{\mathrm{st}}(d):= 2(d+1)/(d-1)$.

This inequality yields an uncertainty principle of the form min _e∈𝕊^d-1∫ _𝕊^d-1 (1- ⟨x, e ⟩) |f(x)|^2 dσ(x) ∫ _𝕊^d-1| ∇ _0 f(x)| ^2 dσ(x) ≥ c'_d on the sphere for functions with zero mean and unit norm, which can be used to establish another uncertainty principle without zero mean assumption, both of which appear to be new.

Abstract:We present a new proof (based on spectral decomposition) of a bound originally proved by Sidelnikov~\, for the frame potentials $\sum_{ij} \left( {\bf P}_i \cdot {\bf P}_j \right)^\ell $ on a unit--sphere in $d$ dimensions. Sidelnikov's bound is a special case of the lower bound for the weighted sums $\sum_{ij} f_i f_j \left( {\bf P}_i \cdot {\bf P}_j \right)^\ell$, where $f_i>0$ are scalar quantities associated to each point on the sphere, which we also prove using spectral decomposition. Moreover, in three dimensions, again using spectral decomposition, we find a sharp upper bound for $\sum_{ijk}^N \left[ \left( {\bf P}_i \times {\bf P}_j\right) \cdot {\bf P}_k \right]^2$. We explore two applications of these bounds: first, we examine configurations of points corresponding to the local minima of the Thomson problem for $N=972$; second, we analyze various distributions of points within a three-dimensional volume, where a suitable weighted sum is defined to satisfy a specific bound.

Abstract:Conditional on Fourier restriction estimates for elliptic hypersurfaces, we prove optimal restriction estimates for polynomial hypersurfaces of revolution for which the defining polynomial has non-negative coefficients. In particular, we obtain uniform--depending only on the dimension and polynomial degree--estimates for restriction with affine surface measure, slightly beyond the bilinear range. The main step in the proof of our linear result is an (unconditional) bilinear adjoint restriction estimate for pieces at different scales.

Abstract:We prove new Fourier restriction estimates to the unit sphere $S^{d-1}$ on the class of $O(d-k)\times O(k)$-symmetric functions, for every $d\geq 4$ and $2\leq k\leq d-2$. As an application, we establish the existence of maximizers for the endpoint Stein--Tomas inequality within that class. Moreover, we construct examples showing that the range of Lebesgue exponents in our estimates is sharp.

Abstract:The Stein--Tomas restriction theorem is an important result in Fourier restriction theory. It gives a range of $q$ for which $L^q\to L^2$ restriction estimates hold for a given measure, in terms of the Fourier and Frostman dimensions of the measure. We generalise this result by using the Fourier spectrum; a family of dimensions that interpolate between the Fourier and Sobolev dimensions for measures. This gives us a continuum of Stein--Tomas type estimates, and optimising over this continuum gives a new $L^q\to L^2$ restriction theorem which often outperforms the Stein--Tomas result. We also provide results in the other direction by giving a range of $q$ in terms of the Fourier spectrum for which $L^q\to L^2$ restriction estimates fail, generalising an observation of Hambrook and Łaba. We illustrate our results with several examples, including the surface measure on the cone, the moment curve, and several fractal measures.
