Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a group acting on with finite stabilizers and finite fundamental domain on a building of type $\tilde A_2$. We prove that any non-trivial normal subgroup of $\Gamma$ is of finite index in $\Gamma$.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma_+$ be a normal subgroup of index $2n$ of a group $\Gamma$ and $\gamma_i \in \Gamma \setminus \Gamma_+$ be involutions. We first prove that if $\Gamma = \Gamma_+ \rtimes (\mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_1) \times \cdots \times \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_n))$ then $\Gamma = (\Gamma_+ \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_1) \rtimes \cdots \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_{i-1})) \rtimes (\mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_{i}) \times \cdots \times \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_n))$, where $i=2,\cdots,n$. Second, we use this result to prove the well-known Fubini theorem for a subgroup of index $2n$ of a compact Lie group. Finally, we present an application to invariant theory.

Abstract:In the current paper we study the groups, whose subnormal abelian subgroups are normal. We obtained a quite detailed description of such hyperabelian groups with a periodic Baer radical. The description of hyperabelian Lie algebras, whose abelian subideals are ideals, is also obtained.

Abstract:We establish two characterizations of an algebraic group scheme $\bigwedge^m GL_n$ over $\mathbb{Z}$. Geometrically, the scheme $\bigwedge^m GL_n$ is a stabilizer of an explicitly given invariant form or, generally, an invariant ideal of forms. Algebraically, $\bigwedge^m GL_n$ is isomorphic (as a scheme over $\mathbb{Z}$) to a normalizer of the elementary subgroup functor $\bigwedge^m E_n$ and a normalizer of the subscheme $\bigwedge^m SL_n$. Our immediate goal is to apply both descriptions in the "sandwich classification" of overgroups of the elementary subgroup. Additionally, the results can be seen as a solution of the linear preserver problem for algebraic group schemes over $\mathbb{Z}$, providing a more functorial description that goes beyond geometry of the classical case over fields.

Abstract:G -character tables of a finite group G were defined in Felipe et al. (Quaest Math, 2022. https://doi.org/10.2989/16073606/16073606.2022.2040633). These tables can be very useful to obtain certain structural information of a normal subgroup from the character table of G . We analyze certain structural properties of normal subgroups which can be determined using their G -character tables. For instance, we prove an extension of the Thompson's theorem from minimal G -invariant characters of a normal subgroup. We also obtain a variation of Taketa's theorem for hypercentral normal subgroups considering their minimal G -invariant characters. This generalization allows us to introduce a new class of nilpotent groups, the class of nMI -groups, whose members verify that its nilpotency class is bounded by the number of irreducible character degrees of the group.

Landau's Theorem on conjugacy classes for normal subgroups

Abstract:Landau's theorem on conjugacy classes asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups, up to isomorphism, with exactly $k$ conjugacy classes for any positive integer $k$. We show that, for any positive integers $n$ and $s$, there exists only a finite number of finite groups $G$, up to isomorphism, having a normal subgroup $N$ of index $n$ which contains exactly $s$ non-central $G$-conjugacy classes. We provide upper bounds for the orders of $G$ and $N$, which are used by using GAP to classify all finite groups with normal subgroups having a small index and few $G$-classes. We also study the corresponding problems when we only take into account the set of $G$-classes of prime-power order elements contained in a normal subgroup.

Abstract:This paper concerns the non-commutative analog of the Normal Subgroup Theorem for certain groups. Inspired by Kalantar-Panagopoulos, we show that all $\Gamma$-invariant subalgebras of $L\Gamma$ and $C^*_r(\Gamma)$ are ($\Gamma$-) co-amenable. The groups we work with satisfy a singularity phenomenon described in Bader-Boutonnet-Houdayer-Peterson. The setup of singularity allows us to obtain a description of $\Gamma$-invariant intermediate von Neumann subalgebras $L^{\infty}(X,\xi)\subset\mathcal{M}\subset L^{\infty}(X,\xi)\rtimes\Gamma$ in terms of the normal subgroups of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a class of finite groups closed for subgroups, quotients groups and extensions. Let $\Gamma$ be a finite simplicial graph and $G = G_{\Gamma}$ be the corresponding pro-$\mathcal C$ RAAG. We show that if $N$ is a non-trivial finitely generated, normal, full pro-$\mathcal C$ subgroup of $G$ then $G/ N$ is finite-by-abelian. In the pro-$p$ case we show a criterion for $N$ to be of type $FP_n$ when $G/ N \simeq \mathbb{Z}_p$. Furthermore for $G/ N$ infinite abelian we show that $N$ is finitely generated if and only if every normal closed subgroup $ N_0 \triangleleft G$ containing $N$ with $G/ N_0 \simeq \mathbb{Z}_p$ is finitely generated. For $G/ N$ infinite abelian with $N$ weakly discretely embedded in $G$ we show that $N$ is of type $FP_n$ if and only if every $ N_0 \leq G$ containing $N$ with $G/ N_0 \simeq \mathbb{Z}_p$ is of type $FP_n$.

Abstract:In a recent paper by A. A. Klyachko, V. Y. Miroshnichenko, and A. Y. Olshanskii, it is proven that the center of any finite strongly verbally closed group is a direct factor. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of finite normal subgroups of any strongly verbally closed group. It follows that finitely generated nilpotent groups with nonabelian torsion subgroups are not strongly verbally closed.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $q$ be different primes and let $G$ be a finite $q$-solvable group. We prove that $\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(G)\subseteq \mathrm{Irr}_{q'}(G)$ if and only if $\mathbf{N}_G(P)\subseteq \mathbf{N}_G(Q)$ and $\mathbf{C}_{Q'}(P)=1$ for some $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$ and $Q\in\mathrm{Syl}_q(G)$. Further, if $B$ is a $q$-block of $G$ and $p$ does not divide the degree of any character in $\mathrm{Irr}(B)$ then we prove that a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is normalized by a defect group of $B$. This removes the $p$-solvability condition of two theorems of G. Navarro and T. R. Wolf.

On closure operations in the space of subgroups and applications

Abstract:We establish some interactions between uniformly recurrent subgroups (URSs) of a group $G$ and cosets topologies $\tau_\mathcal{N}$ on $G$ associated to a family $\mathcal{N}$ of normal subgroups of $G$. We show that when $\mathcal{N}$ consists of finite index subgroups of $G$, there is a natural closure operation $\mathcal{H} \mapsto \mathrm{cl}_\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{H})$ that associates to a URS $\mathcal{H}$ another URS $\mathrm{cl}_\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{H})$, called the $\tau_\mathcal{N}$-closure of $\mathcal{H}$. We give a characterization of the URSs $\mathcal{H}$ that are $\tau_\mathcal{N}$-closed in terms of stabilizer URSs. This has consequences on arbitrary URSs when $G$ belongs to the class of groups for which every faithful minimal profinite action is topologically free. We also consider the largest amenable URS $\mathcal{A}_G$, and prove that for certain coset topologies on $G$, almost all subgroups $H \in \mathcal{A}_G$ have the same closure. For groups in which amenability is detected by a set of laws (a property that is variant of the Tits alternative), we deduce a criterion for $\mathcal{A}_G$ to be a singleton based on residual properties of $G$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and $F$ be a finite field of characteristic $p$. Suppose that $FG$ is the group algebra of the finite $p$-group $G$ over the field $F$. Let $V(FG)$ denote the group of normalized units in $FG$ and let $V_*(FG)$ denote the unitary subgroup of $V(FG)$. If $p$ is odd, then the order of $V_*(FG)$ is $|F|^{(|G|-1)/2}$. However, the case when $p=2$ still is open. In this paper, the order of $V_*(FG)$ is computed when $G$ is a nonabelian $2$-group given by a central extension of the form $$1\longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{2^n}\times \mathbb{Z}_{2^m} \longrightarrow G \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_2\times \cdots\times \mathbb{Z}_2 \longrightarrow 1$$ and $G'\cong \mathbb{Z}_2$, $n, m\geq 1$. Further, a conjecture is confirmed, namely, the order of $V_*(FG)$ can be divisible by $|F|^{\frac{1}{2}(|G|+|\Omega_1(G)|)-1}$, where $\Omega_1(G)=\{g\in G\ |\ g^2=1\}$.
