Abstract:The ATLAS detector is installed in its experimental cavern at Point 1 of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. During Run 2 of the LHC, a luminosity of $\mathcal{L}=2\times 10^{34}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ was routinely achieved at the start of fills, twice the design luminosity. For Run 3, accelerator improvements, notably luminosity levelling, allow sustained running at an instantaneous luminosity of $\mathcal{L}=2\times 10^{34}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, with an average of up to 60 interactions per bunch crossing. The ATLAS detector has been upgraded to recover Run 1 single-lepton trigger thresholds while operating comfortably under Run 3 sustained pileup conditions. A fourth pixel layer 3.3 cm from the beam axis was added before Run 2 to improve vertex reconstruction and $b$-tagging performance. New Liquid Argon Calorimeter digital trigger electronics, with corresponding upgrades to the Trigger and Data Acquisition system, take advantage of a factor of 10 finer granularity to improve triggering on electrons, photons, taus, and hadronic signatures through increased pileup rejection. The inner muon endcap wheels were replaced by New Small Wheels with Micromegas and small-strip Thin Gap Chamber detectors, providing both precision tracking and Level-1 Muon trigger functionality. Tile Calorimeter scintillation counters were added to improve electron energy resolution and background rejection. Upgrades to Minimum Bias Trigger Scintillators and Forward Detectors improve luminosity monitoring and enable total proton-proton cross section, diffractive physics, and heavy ion measurements. These upgrades are all compatible with operation in the much harsher environment anticipated after the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC and are the first steps towards preparing ATLAS for the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC. This paper describes the Run 3 configuration of the ATLAS detector.

Abstract:In 2017, ATLAS has been equipped with a new, dedicated detector system allowing measurements of forward protons scattered at small angles in diffractive and electromagnetic processes. These ATLAS Forward Proton detectors (AFP) can operate during the standard high-luminosity LHC runs and collect large amounts of integrated luminosity. This gives a possibility to study rare interactions, in particular, the two-photon processes. The physics programme includes measurements of photon-photon interactions present in the Standard Model, as well as using searches for new physics. In this paper, the AFP detectors and physics goals are briefly presented.

Abstract:The ALICE Collaboration completed the upgrade of the detector and is now commissioning for the beginning of the data taking during LHC Run 3. In parallel, R&D activities and simulation studies are being performed to define the future of the experiment beyond LHC Run 3. Two detector upgrades are foreseen for the next long shutdown (LS3). The first is the replacement of the three layers of the inner tracking system closest to the beam with a novel vertex detector consisting of curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors arranged in perfectly cylindrical layers to improve impact parameter resolution and significantly extend the physics capability for the study of the heavy-flavor production and the low-mass dielectrons. The second upgrade for the LS3 is the addition of a Forward Calorimeter detector at large rapidity consisting of a Si-W electromagnetic calorimeter with pad and pixel readout, that will equip the experiment with unique capabilities to measure small-x gluon distributions via prompt photon production. A proposal of a next-generation heavy-ion experiment for LHC Run 5 is also in preparation and will be discussed. The aim is to perform novel measurements of the electromagnetic and hadronic probes of the QGP, such as the production of multiply-charmed baryons, which have so far been inaccessible, both because of detector performance and luminosity. The concept of the new apparatus foresees an extensive usage of thin silicon sensors for tracking and a modern particle identification system, combining a silicon-based time of flight detector, a RICH detector, an electromagnetic calorimeter and a muon system.

Abstract:In this communication I describe the ATLAS forward physics program and the detectors, LUCID, ZDC and ALFA that have been designed to meet this experimental challenge. In addition to their primary role in the determination of ATLAS luminosity these detectors - in conjunction with the main ATLAS detector - will be used to study soft QCD and diffractive physics in the initial low luminosity phase of ATLAS running. Finally, I will briefly describe the ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) project that currently represents the future of the ATLAS forward physics program.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Long Shutdown 2 (2019–2021), following LHC Run 2, was primarily dedicated to the upgrade of the LHC Injectors but it included also a significant amount of activities aimed at consolidation of the LHC machine components, removal of known limitations and initial upgrades in view of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) to favour the intensity ramp-up during Run 3 (2022–2025). An overview of the major modifications to the accelerator and its systems is followed by a summary of the results of the superconducting magnet training campaign to increase the LHC operation energy beyond the maximum value of 6.5 TeV reached during Run 2. The LHC configuration and the scenarios for proton and ion operation for Run 3 are presented considering the expected performance of the upgraded LHC Injectors and the proton beam intensity limitations resulting from the heat load on the cryogenic system due to beam-induced electron cloud and impedance.

CMS detector: Run 3 status and plans for Phase-2

Abstract:The CMS experiment at the LHC has started data taking in Run 3 at a $\mathrm{pp}$ collision energy of $13.6~\mathrm{TeV}$. In preparation for Run 3, detector systems, such as Pixel Tracker, HCAL and CSC, have been upgraded due to radiation-induced detector aging or to improve performance. A new GEM muon detector layer was also installed. The High Luminosity LHC, will provide unprecedented high luminosity and pileup conditions which require more extensive upgrades under the CMS Phase-2 upgrade project. Fully new tracker and high granularity endcap calorimeter will be installed, as well as additional muon detectors and MIP timing layer. Most current detector electronics will be replaced to handle higher triggering rate of up to 750 kHz and increased latency. The upgrades performed for Run 3 as well as planned Phase-2 upgrades and their current development status are summarized.

Searching for New Physics in Hadronic Final States with Run 2 Proton-Proton Collision Data at the LHC

Abstract:The symmetries of the Standard Model give rise to the forces that act on particles, and the corresponding force mediators. While the Standard Model is an excellent description of particle interactions, it has known limitations; it is therefore important to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model, potentially indicating as-of-yet unknown symmetries of nature. The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have detailed physics programmes, involving a large number of searches for new physics in hadronic final states. As the start of Run 3 of the LHC is imminent, now is a good time to review the progress made and the status of hadronic searches during Run 2 at a centre-of-mass collision energy of 13 TeV. This review provides an overview of the motivations and challenges of hadronic final states at the LHC, followed by an introduction to jet reconstruction, calibration, and tagging. Three classes of searches for new physics in hadronic final states are discussed: di-jet searches, searches for missing transverse momentum in association with another object, and searches for hadronic di-boson resonances. The complementarity of these different analysis strategies is discussed, emphasising the importance of a varied hadronic physics programme in the search for new physics.

Performance of the reconstruction of large impact parameter tracks in the inner detector of ATLAS

Abstract:Searches for long-lived particles (LLPs) are among the most promising avenues for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, displaced signatures are notoriously difficult to identify due to their ability to evade standard object reconstruction strategies. In particular, the default ATLAS track reconstruction applies strict pointing requirements which limit sensitivity to charged particles originating far from the primary interaction point. To recover efficiency for LLPs decaying within the tracking detector volume, the ATLAS Collaboration employs a dedicated large-radius tracking (LRT) pass with loosened pointing requirements. During Run 2 of the LHC, the LRT implementation produced many incorrectly reconstructed tracks and was therefore only deployed in small subsets of events. In preparation for LHC Run 3, ATLAS has significantly improved both standard and large-radius track reconstruction performance, allowing for LRT to run in all events. This development greatly expands the potential phase-space of LLP searches and streamlines LLP analysis workflows. This paper will highlight the above achievement and report on the readiness of the ATLAS detector for track-based LLP searches in Run 3.

The BIS78 Resistive Plate Chambers upgrade of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer for the LHC Run-3

Abstract:Resistive Plate Chambers are used in the ATLAS experiment for the muon trigger and two coordinate measurements in the central region. In preparation for the coming years of LHC running at higher luminosity, besides the New Small Wheel project which is expected to complement the ATLAS muon spectrometer in the endcap regions, a smaller size project, known as BIS78, is being developed with a foreseen installation during the LHC Long Shutdown 2. The BIS78 project will reinforce the fake muon rejection and the selectivity of the muon trigger in the transition region between the ATLAS barrel and end-caps by adding 32 RPC triplets on the edges of the Inner Barrel even sectors (BIS7 and BIS8) as this region is characterized by high rate due to secondary charged tracks generated by beam halo protons and a lack of detector instrumentation. Due to the narrow available space, the project foresees to replace the existing Monitored Drift Tubes, used for the precise position measurement in this area, with muon stations formed by integrated smaller diameter tubes and a new generation of RPCs, capable of withstanding the higher rates and provide a robust standalone muon confirmation. These new RPCs are based on novel design of the gas volume with a thinner gas gap and resistive electrodes, a lower operating voltage and new high gain front-end electronics with respect to the legacy RPCs. Besides the use in Run-3 and onwards, this project is also of particular relevance as a pilot test for the HL-LHC upgrade when an additional full layer of new RPC triplets is expected to complement the full barrel region in the innermost plane. The core of the project is presented, together with a description of the production and the test results. Details on the detector infrastructure and services along with a roadmap towards the final installation and commissioning during the Long Shutdown 2 are also discussed.

The ALICE 3 detector concept for LHC Runs 5 and 6 and its physics performance

Abstract:The LHC Run 5 and 6 data taking phases will bring unprecedented luminosity in high-energy proton-proton and in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Collaboration proposes a next-generation experiment, ALICE 3, specifically designed to operate with the future LHC. ALICE 3 will feature a large pixel-based tracking system covering eight units of pseudorapidity, complemented by advanced particle identification systems. These include silicon time-of-flight layers, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, a muon identification system, and an electromagnetic calorimeter. By placing the vertex detector on a retractable plate inside the beam pipe, a track pointing resolution better than 10 microns can be achieved for the transverse momentum range $p_T$>200 MeV/c. ALICE 3 will be capable of innovative measurements of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and explore new frontiers in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The detailed study of thermal and dynamical properties of QGP will be made possible by measuring low-$p_T$ heavy-flavour production, including beauty hadrons, multi-charm baryons, and charm-charm correlations. Precise multi-differential measurements of dielectron emission will allow for the exploration of chiral-symmetry restoration and the time-evolution of QGP temperature. In addition to QGP studies, ALICE 3 will make unique contributions to the physics of the hadronic phase, through femtoscopic studies of charm meson interaction potentials and searches for nuclei containing charm. This contribution covers the detector design, expected physics performance, and the current status of detector research and development.

Abstract:The Pixel Detector of the ATLAS experiment has shown excellent performance during the whole Run-1 of LHC. Taking advantage of the long shutdown, the detector was extracted from the experiment and brought to surface, to equip it with new service quarter panels, to repair the modules and to ease installation of the Insertable B-Layer (IBL). The IBL is a fourth layer of pixel detectors, and has been installed in May 2014 between the existing Pixel Detector and a new smaller radius beam-pipe at a radius of 3.3 cm. To cope with the high radiation and pixel occupancy due to the proximity to the interaction point, a new read-out chip and two different silicon sensor technologies (planar and 3D) have been developed. Furthermore, the physics performance will be improved through the reduction of pixel size while, targeting for a low material budget, a new mechanical support using light weight staves and CO2 based cooling system have been adopted. An overview of the refurbishing of the Pixel Detector and the IBL project as well as the experience in its construction will be presented, focusing on adopted technologies, module and stave production, qualification of assembly procedure, integration of staves around the beam pipe and commissioning of the detector.

Abstract:During Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) (2026-28), the ALICE experiment is replacing its inner-most three tracking layers by a new detector, Inner Tracking System 3. It will be based on newly developed wafer-scale monolithic active pixel sensors, which are bent into truly cylindrical layers and held in place by light mechanics made from carbon foam. Unprecedented low values of material budget (per layer) and closeness to interaction point (19 mm) lead to a factor two improvement in pointing resolutions from very low $p_\text{T}$ (O(100MeV/$c$)), achieving, for example, 20 ${\mu}$m and 15 ${\mu}$m in the transversal and longitudinal directions, respectively, for 1 GeV/c primary charged pions. After a successful R\&D phase 2019-2023, which demonstrated the feasibility of this innovational detector, the final sensor and mechanics are being developed right now. This contribution will briefly review the conceptual design and the main R&D achievements, as well as the current activities and road to completion and installation. It concludes with a projection of the improved physics performance, in particular for heavy-flavour hadrons, as well as for thermal dielectrons, that will come into reach with this new detector installed.

Abstract:The ALICE Collaboration proposes a completely new apparatus, ALICE 3, for the LHC Runs 5 and 6. The detector consists of a large pixel-based tracking system covering eight units of pseudorapidity, complemented by multiple systems for particle identification, including silicon time-of-flight layers, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, a muon identification system, an electromagnetic calorimeter and a forward conversion tracker. Track pointing resolution of better than 10~$\mu$m for $p_T$ >200 MeV/$c$ can be achieved by placing the vertex detector on a retractable structure inside the beam pipe. ALICE 3 will, on the one hand, enable novel studies of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and, on the other hand, open up important physics opportunities in other areas of QCD and beyond. The main new studies in the QGP sector focus on low-$p_T$ heavy-flavour production, including beauty hadrons, multi-charm baryons and charm-charm correlations, as well as on precise multi-differential measurements of dielectron emission to probe the mechanism of chiral-symmetry restoration and the time-evolution of the QGP temperature. Besides QGP studies, ALICE 3 can uniquely contribute to hadronic physics, with femtoscopic studies of the interaction potentials between charm mesons and searches for nuclei with charm, and to fundamental physics, with tests of the Low theorem for ultra-soft photon emission. This paper will cover the detector concept, the status of novel sensor R&D and the resulting physics performance.

ATLAS IBL: a challenging first step for ATLAS Upgrade at the sLHC

Abstract:With the LHC collecting data at 7 TeV, plans are already advancing for a series of upgrades leading eventually to about five times the LHC design luminosity some 10 years from now in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. The upgrades for ATLAS detector will be staged in preparation for HL-LHC. The first upgrade for the Pixel Detector will be the construction of a new pixel layer, which will be installed during the first shutdown of the LHC machine foreseen in 2013-14. The new detector, called the Insertable B-Layer (IBL) will be installed between the existing Pixel Detector and a new, smaller radius beam-pipe at the radius of 3.2 cm. The IBL will require the development of several new technologies to cope with increased radiation and pixel occupancy and also to improve the physics performance through reduction of the pixel size and more stringent material budget. Two different and promising Silicon sensor technologies (planar n-in-n and 3D) are currently under investigation for the IBL. An overview of the IBL module design and the qualification for these sensor technologies are presented in this proceeding. This proceeding also summarizes the improvements expected to the ATLAS detector at the HL-LHC.
