Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the role of the shortest distance in time-dependent enclosure method for the inverse problems when the inclusions are embedded in a non-layered or two-layered medium. Furthermore, the regularity assumptions for the boundaries of the inclusions are relaxed.

Abstract:In this paper a wave is generated by an initial data whose support is localized at the outside of unknown obstacles and observed in a limited time on a known closed surface or the same position as the support of the initial data. The observed data in the latter process are nothing but the back-scattering data. Two types of obstacles are considered. One is obstacles with a dissipative boundary condition which is a generalization of the sound-hard obstacles; another is obstacles with a finite refractive index, so-called, transparent obstacles. For each type of obstacles two formulae which yield explicitly the distance from the support of the initial data to unknown obstacles are given.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish the framework of the enclosure method for some class of inverse problems whose governing equations are given by parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. The framework is given by considering a concrete inverse initial boundary value problem for a parabolic equation with discontinuous coefficients. The problem is to extract information about the location and shape of unknown inclusions embedded in a known isotropic heat conductive body from a set of the input heat flux across the boundary of the body and output temperature on the same boundary. In the framework the original inverse problem is reduced to an inverse problem whose governing equation has a large parameter. A list of requirements which enables one to apply the enclosure method to the reduced inverse problem is given. Two new results which can be considered as the application of the framework are given. In the first result the background conductive body is assumed to be homogeneous and a family of explicit complex exponential solutions are employed. Second an application of the framework to inclusions in an isotropic inhomogeneous heat conductive body is given. The main problem is the construction of the special solution of the governing equation with a large parameter for the background inhomogeneous body required by the framework. It is shown that, introducing another parameter which is called the virtual slowness and making it sufficiently large, one can construct the required solution which yields an extraction formula of the convex hull of unknown inclusions in a known isotropic inhomogeneous conductive body.

Abstract:In this article, the inverse problems for the wave equation in a medium in which multiple types of cavities and inclusion exist in a mixture are considered. From the point of view of the indicator function of the enclosure method, there are two types of heterogeneous parts: "minus group" and "plus group." For example, cavities with the Dirichlet boundary condition belong to the minus group, while inclusions with smaller propagation velocity belong to the plus group. The heterogeneous part of the minus group gives a negative sign to the indicator function, and the heterogeneous part of the plus group gives a positive sign. In general, the presence of many types of heterogeneous parts causes cancelation of the sign of the indicator function. Such cases are referred to as "mixed cases." Here, we consider the case that the shortest length obtained from the indicator function is attained only by heterogeneous parts of the same group. This case is called the "mixed but separated case," and it is shown that the method of elliptic estimates developed by Ikehata works well. We also show that the case of a two‐layered background medium with a flat layer can be considered in the same way as the case of a homogeneous background medium.

Abstract:An inverse obstacle problem governed by the Stokes system in the time domain is considered. Two types of extraction formulae about the geometry of an unknown obstacle are given by using the most recent version of the time domain enclosure method in a unified style. Each of the formulae employs only a single set of velocity and the Cauchy stress fields over a finite time interval on the surface of the region where a viscous incompressible fluid occupies.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the numerical implementation of a formula in the enclosure method as applied to a prototype inverse initial boundary value problem for thermal imaging in a one-space dimension. A precise error estimate of the formula is given and the effect on the discretization of the used integral of the measured data in the formula is studied. The formula requires a large frequency to converge; however, the number of time interval divisions grows exponetially as the frequency increases. Therefore, for a given number of divisions, we fixed the trusted frequency region of convergence with some given error bound. The trusted frequency region is computed theoretically using theorems provided in this paper and is numerically implemented for various cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the scattering of a time-dependent electromagnetic wave by an elastic body immersed in the lower half-space of a two-layered background medium which is separated by an unbounded rough surface. By proposing two exact transparent boundary conditions (TBCs) on the artificial planes, we reformulate the unbounded scattering problem into an equivalent initial-boundary value problem in a strip domain with the well-posedness and stability proved using the Laplace transform, variational method and energy method. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is then introduced to truncate the interaction problem with two finite layers containing the elastic body, leading to a PML problem in a finite strip domain. We further verify the existence, uniqueness and stability estimate of solution for the PML problem. Finally, we establish the exponential convergence in terms of the thickness and parameters of the PML layers via an error estimate on the electric-to-magnetic (EtM) capacity operators between the original problem and the PML problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of quasi-linear wave equation outside of star-shaped obstacle in three space dimensions. We study the general case that the nonlinear term may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new weighted space-time L-2 estimates of the linear wave equation for the unknown function itself, we obtained sharp lower bounds of the lifespan T-epsilon >= C/epsilon(2) for the quasi-linear initial boundary value problem.

Abstract:We study an abstract second order inclusion involving two nonlinear single-valued operators and a nonlinear multivalued term. Our goal is to establish the existence of solutions to the problem by applying numerical scheme based on time discretization. We show that the sequence of approximate solution converges weakly to a solution of the exact problem. We apply our abstract result to a dynamic, second order in time differential inclusion involving Clarke subdifferential of a locally Lipschitz, possibly nonconvex and nonsmooth potential. In two presented examples the Clarke subdifferential appears either in a source term or in a boundary term.

Abstract:In this paper we deal with an abstract problem which includes the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow as an example. Recently, a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying to some parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems has been studied. This paper focuses on a time discretization of an abstract problem applying to the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow. Also, this paper gives some parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems as examples.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a bounded time inverse scattering problem for a semilinear Dirac equation with smooth non-linearity $F(x, z)$ depending on spatial location $x$, and scattering map sending initial data at time 0 to the solution at time $T$. We showed that $F(x, z)$ can be determined on $x \in \mathbb{R}^3$ and $|z| \leq M$ for suitable $M$ depending on scattering map, under the assumption that $\partial_z F(x, 0)$ and $\partial^2_z F(x, 0)$ are given.

Abstract:We study the initial-boundary value problem of quasilinear wave equations outside of a star-shaped obstacle in four space dimensions, in which the nonlinear term under consideration may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new $L^{\infty}_{t}L^{2}_{x}$ and weighted $L^{2}_{t,x}$ estimates for the unknown function itself, together with energy estimates and KSS estimates, for the quasilinear obstacle problem we obtain a lower bound of the lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}\geq \exp{(\frac{c}{\varepsilon^2})}$, which coincides with the sharp lower bound of lifespan estimate for the corresponding Cauchy problem.

Abstract:We consider a partial data inverse problem for a time-dependent convection-diffusion equation on an admissible manifold. We prove that the time-dependent convection term and time-dependent density can be recovered uniquely modulo a known gauge invariance. There have been several works on inverse problems related to the steady state convection-diffusion operator in Euclidean as well as in Riemannian geometry settings; however, inverse problems related to time-dependent convection-diffusion equation on a manifold are not studied in the prior works, which is the main aim of this paper. In fact, to the best of our knowledge, the problem studied here is the first work related to a partial data inverse problem for recovering both first and zeroth-order time-dependent perturbations of evolution equations in the Riemannian geometry setting.

Abstract:We consider time-dependent inverse problems in a mathematical setting using Lebesgue-Bochner spaces. Such problems arise when one aims to recover parameters from given observations where the parameters or the data depend on time. There are various important applications being subject of current research that belong to this class of problems. Typically inverse problems are ill-posed in the sense that already small noise in the data causes tremendous errors in the solution. In this article we present two different concepts of ill-posedness: temporally (pointwise) ill-posedness and uniform ill-posedness with respect to the Lebesgue-Bochner setting. We investigate the two concepts by means of a typical setting consisting of a time-depending observation operator composed by a compact operator. Furthermore we develop regularization methods that are adapted to the respective class of ill-posedness.

Abstract:We use Ikehata's enclosure method to reconstruct penetrable unknown inclusions in a plane elastic body in time-harmonic waves. Complex geometrical optics solutions with complex polynomial phases are adopted as the probing utility. In a situation similar to ours, due to the presence of a zeroth order term in the equation, some technical assumptions need to be assumed in early researches. In a recent work of Sini and Yoshida, they succeeded in abandoning these assumptions by using a different idea to obtain a crucial estimate. In particular the boundaries of the inclusions need only to be Lipschitz. In this work we apply the same idea to our model. It's interesting that, with more careful treatment, we find the boundaries of the inclusions can in fact be assumed to be only continuous.

Abstract:We consider an inclusion in a real Hilbert space governed by a time-dependent set of constraints and a history-dependent operator. We introduce the concept of T - well-posedness for this inclusion, associated to a given Tykhonov triple T . Next, we provide a T -well-posedness result that we use in order to deduce the continuous dependence of the solution with respect to the data. Then, we state and prove a convergence criterion to the solution of the inclusion that we use to prove a convergence result for an associate penalty problem. Moreover, we show that this criterion allows us to construct a Tykhonov triple T -which give rise to an optimal well-posedness concept for the corresponding inclusion. Finally, we use these abstract results in the study of a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive law with long memory term and unilateral constraints.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a least squares formulation for ill-posed inverse problems. For example, ill-posed inverse problems in partial differential equations are those such that a solution of inverse problem exists for a smooth data but it does not depend continuously on data, or there is no solution for inverse problem, e.g. the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations and backward solution of parabolic equations. We develop the least squares formulation in which the sum of equations error over domain and data fitting criterion and Tikhonov regularization terms is minimized over entire solutions. In this way we can establish the existence and uniqueness of an inverse solution and establish the continuity of the inverse solution for noisy data in <span class="NLM_disp-formula inline-formula"><math>L2</math></span>. The method can be applied to a general class of non-linear inverse problems and an operator theoretic stability analysis is developed. We describe how one can apply the method for various PDE inverse problems. Numerical tests using backward heat equation and Cauchy problem for elliptic equations are presented to demonstrate the applicability and performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider inverse problems associated with the reduced wave equation on a bounded domain Ω⊂RN(N⩾2) for the case where unknown obstacles are embedded in the domain Ω. We show that, if both the leading and 0-order coefficients in the equation are a priori known to be piecewise constant functions, then both the coefficients and embedded obstacles can be simultaneously recovered in terms of the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map defined on an arbitrary small open subset of the boundary ∂Ω. The method depends on a well-defined coupled PDE-system constructed for the reduced wave equations in a sufficiently small domain and the singularity analysis of solutions near the interface for the model.
