Abstract:We consider the $L^2$-boundedness of the solution itself of the Cauchy problem for wave equations with time-dependent wave speeds. We treat it in the one-dimensional Euclidean space. To study these, we adopt a simple multiplier method by using a special property equiped with the one dimensional space.

Abstract:By assuming certain local energy estimates on (1+3)-dimensional asymptotically flat space-time, we study the existence portion of the Strauss type wave system. Firstly we give a kind of space-time estimates which are related to the local energy norm that appeared in [13]. These estimates can be used to prove a series of weighted Strichartz and KSS type estimates, for wave equations on asymptotically flat space-time. Then we apply the space-time estimates to obtain the lower bound of the lifespan when the nonlinear exponents p and q >= 2. In particular, our bound for the subcritical case is sharp in general and we extend the known region of (p, q) to admit global solutions. In addition, the initial data are not required to be compactly supported, when p, q > 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of quasi-linear wave equation outside of star-shaped obstacle in three space dimensions. We study the general case that the nonlinear term may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new weighted space-time L-2 estimates of the linear wave equation for the unknown function itself, we obtained sharp lower bounds of the lifespan T-epsilon >= C/epsilon(2) for the quasi-linear initial boundary value problem.

Abstract:We study the Cauchy problem for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple propagation speeds in four space dimensions. The nonlinear term in this problem may explicitly depends on the unknown function itself. By some new (LtLx2)-L-infinity estimates of the unknown function, combining with some Klainerman-Sideris type weighted estimates, we get the sharp lower bound of lifespan T-epsilon >= exp (c/epsilon(2)) for the quasilinear system.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove new results on the validity of the limiting amplitude principle (LAP) for the wave equation with nonconstant coefficients, not necessarily in divergence form. Under suitable assumptions on the coefficients and on the source term, we establish the LAP for space dimensions 2 and 3. This result is extended to one space dimension with an appropriate modification. We also quantify the LAP and thus provide estimates for the convergence of the time-domain solution to the frequency-domain solution. Our proofs are based on time-decay results of solutions of some auxiliary problems. The obtained results are illustrated numerically on radially symmetric problems in dimensions 1, 2 and 3.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the initial-value problem of the Kawahara equation. By establishing some crucial bilinear estimates related to the Bourgain spaces X-s,X-b(R-2) introduced by Bourgain and homogeneous Bourgain spaces, which is defined in this paper and using l-method as well as L-2 conservation law, we show that this fifth-order shallow water wave equation is globally well-posed for the initial data in the Sobolev spaces H-s(R) with s> - 63/58. Abstract: In this paper, we discuss a new nonlinear phenomenon. We find that in $n\geq 2$ space dimensions, there exists two indexes $p$ and $q$ such that the cauchy problems for the nonlinear wave equations {equation} \label{0.1} \Box u(t,x) = |u(t,x)|^{q}, \ \ x\in R^{n}, {equation} and {equation} \label{0.2} \Box u(t,x) = |u_{t}(t,x)|^{p}, \ \ x\in R^{n} {equation} both have global existence for small initial data, while for the combined nonlinearity, the solutions to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear wave equation {equation} \label{0.3} \Box u(t,x) = | u_{t}(t,x)|^{p} + |u(t,x)|^{q}, \ \ x\in R^{n}, {equation} with small initial data will blow up in finite time. In the two dimensional case, we also find that if $ q=4$, the Cauchy problem for the equation \eqref{0.1} has global existence, and the Cauchy problem for the equation {equation} \label{0.4} \Box u(t,x) = u (t,x)u_{t}(t,x)^{2}, \ \ x\in R^{2} {equation} has almost global existence, that is, the life span is at least $ \exp (c\varepsilon^{-2}) $ for initial data of size $ \varepsilon$. However, in the combined nonlinearity case, the Cauchy problem for the equation {equation} \label{0.5} \Box u(t,x) = u(t,x) u_{t}(t,x)^{2} + u(t,x)^{4}, \ \ x\in R^{2} {equation} has a life span which is of the order of $ \varepsilon^{-18} $ for the initial data of size $ \varepsilon$, this is considerably shorter in magnitude than that of the first two equations. This solves an open optimality problem for general theory of fully nonlinear wave equations (see \cite{Katayama}).

Abstract:In this paper, we establish global existence of smooth solutions for Cauchy problem of the critical nonlinear wave equation with time dependent variable coefficients in three space dimensions where (g ij (t, x)) is a regular function valued in the spacetime of 3 × 3 positive definite matrix and (g ij (t, x)) its inverse matrix. Here and in the sequence, a repeated sum on an index in lower and upper position is never indicated. In the constant coefficients case, the result of global existence is due to Grillakis [5]; and in the time-independent variable coefficients case, the result of global existence and regularity is due to Ibrahim and Majdoub [7]. The key point of our proofs is to show that the energy cannot concentrate at any point. For that purpose, following Christodoulou and Klainerman [3], we use a null frame associated to an optical function to construct a geometric multiplier similar to the well-known Morawetz multiplier. Then we use comparison theorem originated from Riemannian Geometry to estimate the error terms. Finally, using Strichartz inequality due to [15] as Ibrahim and Majdoub [7], we obtain global existence.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic $m$-th order partial differential equations with coefficients low-regular in time and smooth in space. It is well-known that the problem is $L^2$ well-posed in the case of Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time, $H^s$ well-posed in the case of Log-Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, finite loss of derivatives) and Gevrey well-posed in the case of Hölder continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, infinite loss of derivatives). Here, we use moduli of continuity to describe the regularity of the coefficients with respect to time, weight sequences for the characterization of their regularity with respect to space and weight functions to define the solution spaces. We establish sufficient conditions for the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, that link the modulus of continuity and the weight sequence of the coefficients to the weight function of the solution space. The well-known results for Lipschitz, Log-Lipschitz and Hölder coefficients are recovered.

Abstract:We are interested in the one-dimensional nonlinear wave equations with multiple wave speeds by the energy method. By choosing different multipliers corresponding to the different wave speeds, we show that the one-dimensional nonlinear wave equations also have globally smooth solutions provided that the nonlinearities satisfy certain structural conditions when the initial data are small. Furthermore, we can prove that the global solutions will converge to the solutions of the linearized system based on the decay properties of the nonlinearities.

Abstract:The Cauchy problem for nonlinear elastic wave equations with viscoelastic damping terms is investigated in $L^{p}$ framework. It is proved that the small global solutions constructed in $L^{2}$-Sobolev spaces in our preceding paper [12] satisfies consistency property corresponding to the additional regularity of the initial data. As a result, sharp estimates in $t$ and approximation formulas by the diffusion waves are established.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the boundary stabilization of the wave equation with variable coefficients by Riemannian geometry method subject to a different geometric condition which is motivated by the geometric multiplier identities. Several (multiplier) identities (inequalities) which have been built for constant wave equation by Kormornik and Zuazua [2] are generalized to the variable coefficient case by some computational techniques in Riemannian geometry, so that the precise estimates on the exponential decay rate are derived from those inequalities. Also, the exponential decay for the solutions of semilinear wave equation with variable coefficients is obtained under natural growth and sign assumptions on the nonlinearity. Our method is rather general and can be adapted to other evolution systems with variable coefficients (e.g. elasticity plates) as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the exterior problem of the critical semilinear wave equation in three space dimensions with variable coefficients and prove the global existence of smooth solutions. Abstract:In this paper we consider the wave equations with power type nonlinearities including time-derivatives of unknown functions and their weakly coupled systems. We propose a framework of test function method and give a simple proof of the derivation of sharp upper bound of lifespan of solutions to nonlinear wave equations and their systems. We point out that for respective critical case, we use a family of self-similar solution to the standard wave equation including Gauss's hypergeometric functions which are originally introduced by Zhou (1992). However, our framework is much simpler than that. As a consequence, we found new $(p,q)$-curve for the system $\partial_t^2u-\Delta u=|v|^q$, $\partial_t^2v-\Delta v=|\partial_tu|^p$ and lifespan estimate for small solutions for new region.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the fully nonlinear wave equations on the product space R3×T with quadratic nonlinearities and on R2×T with cubic nonlinearities, respectively. It is shown that for the small initial data satisfying some space-decay rates at infinity, these nonlinear equations admit global smooth solutions when the corresponding partial null conditions hold and while have almost global smooth solutions when the partial null conditions are violated. Our proof relies on the Fourier mode decomposition of the solutions with respect to the periodic direction, the efficient combinations of time-decay estimates for the solutions to the linear wave equations and the linear Klein-Gordon equations, and the global weighted energy estimates. In addition, an interesting auxiliary energy is introduced. As a byproduct, our results can be applied to the 4D irrotational compressible Euler equations of polytropic gases or Chaplygin gases on R3×T, the 3D relativistic membrane equation and the 3D nonlinear membrane equation on R2×T.

Abstract:The operator-variation-of-constants formula was derived by Wu et al. (2015) for the general multidimensional nonlinear wave equations, and the authors proved that the formula is adapted to different boundary conditions. Furthermore, an energy-preserving scheme for one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Hamiltonian wave equations with periodic boundary conditions was proposed by Liu et al. (2016). It is known that the formula is associated with the operator-valued functions which depend on Laplacian. Hence, it is crucial to show the boundness of the operator valued functions. This motivates the new study of the boundness of the operator valued functions. As an application, we extend the energy-preserving scheme from 1D to multidimensional nonlinear Hamiltonian wave equations with three different boundary conditions. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the long time behavior of solutions to the initial boundary value problem of critical semilinear wave equations with small data in exterior domain in high dimensions (n≥5). We prove that solutions cannot exist globally in time. The novelty is that we first use a cutoff function to transform the exterior problem to a Cauchy problem. Then we divide the time into two intervals, in one time interval we establish an energy estimate to control the error terms while in the other interval the asymptotic behavior of two test functions is used. Furthermore, we obtain the upper bound of the lifespan by following the idea of Zhou and Han (2014).
