Abstract:We prove the local-in-time well-posedness of the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system in a bounded domain $\Omega$ with the specular reflection condition. Our result covers the case when $\Omega$ is a non-convex domain, e.g., solid torus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first local well-posedness result for a nonlinear kinetic model with a self-consistent magnetic effect in a three-dimensional $\textbf{bounded}$ domain.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the local well - posedness of the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell - Landau (RVML) system with specular reflection boundary conditions in a bounded non - convex domain. Specifically, the authors prove that in a three - dimensional bounded region, when the initial data is close enough to the relativistic Maxwellian distribution \(J(p)=e^{-p_0}\), there exists a unique strong solution for the RVML system, and this solution maintains small perturbations within a certain time interval.
### Problem Background
- **Research Object**: The relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell - Landau (RVML) system describes the kinetic behavior in high - temperature dilute collisional plasmas. In particular, in fusion devices such as tokamaks, plasma particles may reach high velocities.
- **Challenge**: Due to the existence of boundaries, especially those in non - convex domains, the regularity of the solution may degrade significantly, leading to mathematical complexity. Moreover, the introduction of magnetic field effects further increases the difficulty of the problem.
### Main Contributions
- **First Result**: This is the first time that the result of local well - posedness has been proven in a three - dimensional bounded domain for a nonlinear kinetic model with self - consistent magnetic field effects.
- **Innovative Method**: By regarding the Maxwell equations as a Hodge - type elliptic system, the authors develop a refined iterative scheme. Using div - curl estimates and the relativistic adaptive S - estimates of the KFP equation with specular reflection boundary conditions, they successfully solve this problem.
### Mathematical Tools and Techniques
- **Energy Method**: The traditional energy method is not effective enough in dealing with singularities near the boundary and low - regularity problems.
- **Specular Extension Technique**: By extending the solution to the entire space and using the Calderon - Zygmund theory, the authors can obtain the Hölder regularity of the solution and its velocity gradient.
- **Iterative Scheme**: By constructing a Picard - type iterative scheme to control the time derivatives of the particle density function and the electromagnetic field, the existence and uniqueness of the solution are proven.
### Compatibility Conditions
- **Initial Data**: The initial data needs to satisfy certain regularity and compatibility conditions to ensure the effectiveness of the iterative scheme.
### Conclusion
- **Main Theorem**: Under certain assumptions, if the initial data is small enough and satisfies the compatibility conditions, then the RVML system has a unique strong solution within a certain time interval, and this solution maintains small perturbations.
### Application Prospects
- **Plasma Physics**: This result is of great significance for understanding the kinetic behavior in high - temperature plasmas, especially in fusion energy research.
- **Mathematical Theory**: It provides new mathematical tools and techniques for solving other similar kinetic models.
Through these innovative methods and techniques, this paper provides an important breakthrough in solving boundary value problems in relativistic kinetic models.
