Abstract:We consider an inverse problem for a non-linear hyperbolic equation. We show that conformal structure of a Lorentzian manifold can be determined by the source-to-solution map evaluated along a single timelike curve. We use the microlocal analysis of non-linear wave interaction.

Rigidity in the Lorentzian Calderón problem with formally determined data

Abstract:We study the Lorentzian Calderón problem, where the objective is to determine a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metric up to a boundary fixing diffeomorphism from boundary measurements given by the hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. This problem is a wave equation analogue of the Calderón problem on Riemannian manifolds. We prove that if a globally hyperbolic metric agrees with the Minkowski metric outside a compact set and has the same hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map as the Minkowski metric, then it must be the Minkowski metric up to diffeomorphism. In fact we prove the same result with a much smaller amount of measurements, thus solving a formally determined inverse problem. To prove these results we introduce a new method for geometric hyperbolic inverse problems. The method is based on distorted plane wave solutions and on a combination of geometric, topological and unique continuation arguments.

Local theory of wave equations with timelike curves of conic singularities

Abstract:We develop a general theory for the existence, uniqueness, and higher regularity of solutions to wave-type equations on Lorentzian manifolds with timelike curves of cone-type singularities. These singularities may be of geometric type (cone points with time-dependent cross sectional metric), of analytic type (such as asymptotically inverse square singularities or first order asymptotically scaling-critical singular terms), or any combination thereof. We can treat tensorial equations without any symmetry assumptions; we only require a condition of mode stability type for the stationary model operators defined at each point along the curve of cone points. In symmetric ultrastatic settings, we recover the solvability theory given by the functional calculus for the Friedrichs extension.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a global existence result for nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations in infinite homogeneous waveguides, R×M, with smooth small data, where M=(M,g) is a Zoll manifold, or a compact revolution hypersurface. The method is based on normal forms, eigenfunction expansion and the special distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplace–Beltrami on such manifolds.

Abstract:For a Lorentzian homogeneous space, we study how algebraic conditions on the isotropy group affect the geometry and curvature of the homogeneous space. More specifically, we prove that a Lorentzian locally homogeneous space is locally isometric to a plane wave if it admits an Ambrose--Singer connection with indecomposable, non-irreducible holonomy. This generalises several existing results that require a certain algebraic type of the torsion of the Ambrose--Singer connection and moreover is in analogy to the fact that a Lorentzian homogeneous space with irreducible isotropy has constant sectional curvature.

Abstract:We study the scattering rigidity problem in Lorentzian geometry: recovery of a Lorentzian metric from the scattering relation known on a lateral timelike boundary. We show that one can recover the jet of the metric up to a gauge transformation near a lightlike strictly convex point. Assuming that the metric is real analytic, we show that one can recover the metric up to a gauge transformation as well near such a point.

Abstract:We investigate a parabolic-elliptic system which is related to a harmonic map from a compact Riemann surface with a smooth boundary into a Lorentzian manifold with a warped product metric. We prove that there exists a unique global weak solution for this system which is regular except for at most finitely many singular points.

Abstract:We define a conformal reference frame, i.e., a special projection of the six-dimensional sky bundle of a Lorentzian manifold (or the five-dimensional twistor space) to a three-dimensional manifold. We construct an example, a conformal compactification, for Minkowski space. Based on the complex structure on the skies, we define the celestial transform of Lorentzian vectors, a kind of spinor correspondence. We express a 1-form generating the contact structure explicitly as a (line bundle)-valued form. We prove a theorem on the projection of this 1-form to the fiberwise normal bundle of a reference frame; its corollary is an equation for the flow of time. The Appendix is less mathematical than the main body and discusses the causal relation in context of the FLRW cosmology and its natural conformal reference frame.

On the Existence of Linear Observed Systems on Manifolds with Connection

Abstract:Linear observed systems on manifolds are a special class of nonlinear systems whose state spaces are smooth manifolds but possess properties similar to linear systems. Such properties can be characterized by preintegration and exact linearization with Jacobians independent of the linearization point. Non-biased IMU dynamics in navigation can be constructed into linear observed settings, leading to invariant filters with guaranteed behaviors such as local convergence and consistency. In this letter, we establish linear observed property for systems evolving on a smooth manifold through the connection structure endowed upon this space. Our key findings are the existence of linear observed systems on manifolds poses constraints on the curvature of the state space, beyond requiring the dynamics to be compatible with some connection-preserving transformations. Specifically, the flat connection case reproduces the characterization of linear observed systems on Lie groups, showing our theory is a true generalization.

Abstract:We find the local form of all non-closed Lorentzian Weyl manifolds $(M,c,\nabla)$ with recurrent curvature tensor.If the dimension of the manifold is greater than 3, then the conformal structure is flat, and the recurrent Weyl structure is locally determined by a single function. Two local structures are equivalent if and only if the corresponding functions are related by a transformation from $\mathrm{SAff}_1(\mathbb{R}) \times \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R}) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$. We find generators for the field of rational scalar differential invariants of this Lie group action. The global structure of the manifold $M$ may be described in terms of a foliation with a transversal projective structure. It is shown that all locally homogeneous structures are locally equivalent, and there is only one simply connected homogeneous non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifold. Moreover, there are 5 classes of cohomogeneity-one spaces, and all other spaces are of cohomogeneity-two. If $\dim M=3$, the non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl structures are locally determined by one function of two variables or two functions of one variables, depending on whether its holonomy algebra is 1- or 2-dimensional. In this case, two structures with the same holonomy algebra are locally equivalent if and only if they are related, respectively, by a transformation from an infinite-dimensional Lie pseudogroup or a 4-dimensional subgroup of $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb R^3)$. Again we provide generators for the field of rational differential invariants. We find a local expression for the locally homogeneous non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifolds of dimension 3, and also of those of cohomogeneity one and two. In the end we give a local description of the non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifolds that are also Einstein-Weyl. All of them are 3-dimensional and have a 2-dimensional holonomy algebra.

Abstract:We prove that if a simply connected non-conformally flat conformal Lorentzian manifold $(M,c)$ admits an essential transitive group of conformal transformations, then there exists a metric $g\in c$ such that $(M,g)$ is a complete homogeneous plane wave. We also prove that the group of conformal transformations of a non-conformally flat simply connected homogeneous plane wave $(M,g)$ consists of homotheties, hence it is a 1-dimensional extension of the group of isometries.

Abstract:We consider 4-dimensional spacetime manifolds that are piecewise Lorentzian, where the Lorentzian components of the manifold are separated by codimension-one planes (spacelike or timelike) on which the metric is degenerate. Such manifolds are of interest because they enlarge the smooth and nonsingular solution space of the Einstein equations. Planes of degeneracy that are perpendicular to each other can exist simultaneously. We describe various solutions of this type to the vacuum equations $G_{\mu\nu}=0$ and $G_{\mu\nu}+\Lambda g_{\mu\nu}=0$, and to $G_{\mu\nu}= 8\pi G T_{\mu\nu}$ for a perfect fluid. Novel examples include static gravitational lumps of finite curvature and a spacetime that responds to a cosmological constant via oscillations in time and/or space. A spacelike degeneracy plane can be used to avoid the big bang singularity, as we have further described elsewhere.

Abstract:I tell about different mathematical tool that is important in general relativity. The text of the book includes definition of geometrical object, concept of reference frame, geometry of metric-affinne manifold. Using this concept I learn few physical applications: dynamics and Lorentz transformation in gravitational fields, Doppler shift. A reference frame in event space is a smooth field of orthonormal bases. Every reference frame is equipped by anholonomic coordinates. Using anholonomic coordinates allows to find out relative speed of two observers and appropriate Lorentz transformation. Synchronization of a reference frame is an anholonomic time coordinate. Simple calculations show how synchronization influences time measurement in the vicinity of the Earth. Measurement of Doppler shift from the star orbiting the black hole helps to determine mass of the black hole. We call a manifold with torsion and nonmetricity the metric\hyph affine manifold. The nonmetricity leads to a difference between the auto parallel line and the extreme line, and to a change in the expression of the Frenet transport and moving basis. The torsion leads to a change in the Killing equation. We also need to add a similar equation for the connection. The analysis of the Frenet transport leads to the concept of the Cartan transport and an introduction of the connection compatible with the metric tensor. The dynamics of a particle follows to the Cartan transport. We need additional physical constraints to make a nonmetricity observable. Learning how torsion influences on tidal force reveals similarity between tidal equation for geodesic and the Killing equation of second type.

Abstract:We study the conformal classes of 2-dimensional Lorentzian tori with (non zero) Killing fields. We define a map that associate to such a class a vector field on the circle (up to a scalar factor). This map is not injective but has finite dimensional fiber. It allows us to characterize the conformal classes of tori with Killing field satisfying a condition related to the existence of conjugate points given by L. Mehidi.

Abstract:We approach the problem of finding obstructions to curvature distinguished Riemannian metrics by considering Lorentzian metrics to which they are dual in a suitable sense. Obstructions to the latter then yield obstructions to the former. This framework applies both locally and globally, including to compact manifolds, and is sensitive to various aspects of curvature. Here we apply it in two different ways. First, by embedding a Riemannian manifold into a Lorentzian one and utilizing Penrose's "plane wave limit," we find necessary local conditions, in terms of the Hessian of just one function, for large classes of Riemannian metrics to contain within them those that have parallel Ricci tensor, or are Ricci-flat, or are locally symmetric. Second, by considering Riemannian metrics dual to constant curvature Lorentzian metrics via a type of Wick rotation, we are able to rule out the existence of a family of compact Riemannian manifolds (in all dimensions) that deviate from constant curvature in a precise sense.

Abstract:We consider a strongly damped wave equation on compact manifolds, both with and without boundaries, and formulate the corresponding inverse problems. For closed manifolds, we prove that the metric can be uniquely determined, up to an isometry, from the knowledge of the source-to-solution map. Similarly, for manifolds with boundaries, we prove that the metric can be uniquely determined, up to an isometry, from partial knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The key point is to retrieve the spectral information of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, from the Laplace transform of the measurements. Further we show that the metric can be determined up to an isometry, using a single measurement in both scenarios.
