Abstract:We investigate a parabolic-elliptic system for maps (u, v) from a compact Riemann surface M into a Lorentzian manifold N x R with a warped product metric. That system turns the harmonic map type equations into a parabolic system, but keeps the v-equation as a nonlinear second order constraint along the flow. We prove a global existence result of the parabolic-elliptic system by assuming either some geometric conditions on the target Lorentzian manifold or small energy of the initial maps. The result implies the existence of a Lorentzian harmonic map in a given homotopy class with fixed boundary data. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We investigate a parabolic-elliptic system which is related to a harmonic map from a compact Riemann surface with a smooth boundary into a Lorentzian manifold with a warped product metric. We prove that there exists a unique global weak solution for this system which is regular except for at most finitely many singular points.

Abstract:We derive the variation formula of the partial derivative-energy and of the partial derivative-energy for a smooth map from a complex Finsler manifold to an Hermitian manifold. Applying the result on a nonlinear elliptic system due to J. Jost and S. T. Yau, we obtain some existence theorems of harmonic maps from strongly Kahler Finsler manifolds to Kahler manifolds. Also, for such maps, we show that the difference between partial derivative-energy and partial derivative-energy is a homotopy invariant.

Abstract:This paper is to study further some properties of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. Some rigidity theorems for harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds are given. By introducing the stress-energy tensor of maps between Finsler manifolds, some integral formulas are obtained. Moreover, it is proved that any conformal strongly harmonic map from an n(>2)-dimensional Finsler manifold to a Finsler manifold must be homothetic.

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:For a harmonic map from a closed Riemann surface into a standard stationary Lorentzian manifold, we prove that its Hopf differential is holomorphic. Moreover, we prove that for a sequence of such maps with their energy uniformly bounded, the Lorentzian energy identity holds during the blow-up process.

Abstract:We introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution to this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. A similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied by Li and Liu (2014).
Heat flow of p-harmonic maps from complete manifolds into generalised regular balls

Abstract:We study the heat flow of p-harmonic maps between complete Riemannian manifolds. We prove the global existence of the flow when the initial datum has values in a generalised regular ball. In particular, if the target manifold has nonpositive sectional curvature, we obtain the global existence of the flow for any initial datum with finite p-energy. If, in addition, the target manifold is compact, the flow converges to a p-harmonic map. This gives an extension of the results of Liao-Tam [12] concerning the harmonic heat flow (p = 2) to the case p $\ge$ 2. We also derive a Liouville type theorem for p-harmonic maps between complete Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:For a sequence of approximate harmonic maps $(u_n,v_n)$ (meaning that they satisfy the harmonic system up to controlled error terms) from a compact Riemann surface with smooth boundary to a standard static Lorentzian manifold with bounded energy, we prove that identities for the Lorentzian energy hold during the blow-up process. In particular, in the special case where the Lorentzian target metric is of the form $g_N -\beta dt^2$ for some Riemannian metric $g_N$ and some positive function $\beta $ on N, we prove that such identities also hold for the positive energy (obtained by changing the sign of the negative part of the Lorentzian energy) and there is no neck between the limit map and the bubbles. As an application, we complete the blow-up picture of singularities for a harmonic map flow into a standard static Lorentzian manifold. We prove that the energy identities of the flow hold at both finite and infinite singular times. Moreover, the no neck property of the flow at infinite singular time is true.

Abstract:Let M and N be two compact Riemannian manifolds. Let u k (x, t) be a sequence of strong stationary weak heat flows from M×R + to N with bounded energies. Assume that u k→u weakly in H 1, 2(M×R +, N) and that Σt is the blow-up set for a fixed t > 0. In this paper we first prove Σt is an H m−2-rectifiable set for almost all t∈R +. And then we prove two blow-up formulas for the blow-up set and the limiting map. From the formulas, we can see that if the limiting map u is also a strong stationary weak heat flow, Σt is a distance solution of the (m− 2)-dimensional mean curvature flow [1]. If a smooth heat flow blows-up at a finite time, we derive a tangent map or a weakly quasi-harmonic sphere and a blow-up set ∪t<0Σt× {t}. We prove the blow-up map is stationary if and only if the blow-up locus is a Brakke motion.

Abstract: Harmonic maps are nonlinear extensions of harmonic functions. They are critical points of natural energy functionals between Riemannian manifolds. Such type of problems appear in Physics, Geometry of Finance and the study of regularity and singularity uses methods from elliptic PDE, calculus of variations and geometric measure theory. In this paper, we present a general review of harmonic maps. It is a survey that aims to cover the main classical known results regarding the harmonic maps. We present results for the regularity, blow-ups and rectifiability for local minimizers, stationary harmonic maps and weakly harmonic maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish gradient estimates for the heat flow of V-harmonic maps from complete noncompact manifolds into regular balls. We also derive a Liouville theorem for V-harmonic maps, which improves Theorem 2 in a prior work of the author, Chen and Jost and covers the results of that work and a work of Brighton. Furthermore, using these gradient estimates, we prove the global existence for the V-harmonic map heat flow and generalize the result obtained by Chen-Jost-Wang to the case where the domain manifold is complete noncompact.

Abstract:We study locally harmonic maps between a Riemann surface or a Lorentz surface M and a Riemann or Lorentz surface N . All four cases are written using a unified formalism. Therefore properties and solutions to the harmonic map problem can be studied in a unified way.It is known that harmonic maps between Riemannian surfaces are classified by the classification of the solutions of a sinh-Gordon equation. We extend this result to all the four cases of harmonic maps between Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian surfaces. The calculation of the corresponding harmonic map can be calculated by the solutions of the corresponding Beltrami equations in all the cases.We study the one-soliton solutions of this equation and we find the corresponding harmonic maps in a unified way.Next, we discuss a Bäcklund transformation of the harmonic map equations that provides a connection between the solutions of two sine or sinh-Gordon type equations. Finally, we give an example of a harmonic map that is constructed by the use of a Bäcklund transformation.

Abstract:We construct equivariant maps from double-struck B sign3 into ??2 and prove the global existence of heat flow of such equivariant harmonic maps for equivariant initial-boundary data which are not a priori required to have small range. We also show subconvergence of the solution. This supplies a regular harmonic extension of the given boundary condition.
