Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:For any given submersion $\pi:X\to B$ with closed, oriented and spin$^c$ fibers of even dimension, equipped with a Riemannian and differential spin$^c$ structure $\boldsymbol{\pi}$, we construct an analytic index $\textrm{ind}^a_k$ in odd $\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory on the cocycle level by associating to every cocycle $(\mathbf{E}, \mathbf{F}, \alpha)$ of the odd $\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory group of $X$ a cocycle $\textrm{ind}^a_k(\mathbf{E}, \mathbf{F}, \alpha)$ of the odd $\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory group of $B$. The cocycle $\textrm{ind}^a_k(\mathbf{E}, \mathbf{F}, \alpha)$ is defined in terms of the twisted spin$^c$ Dirac operators associated to $(\mathbf{E}, \boldsymbol{\pi})$ and $(\mathbf{F}, \boldsymbol{\pi})$, which are not assumed to satisfy the kernel bundle assumption. We prove a Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck type formula in odd $\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory, which expresses the Cheeger-Chern-Simons form of $\textrm{ind}^a_k(\mathbf{E}, \mathbf{F}, \alpha)$ in terms of that of $(\mathbf{E}, \mathbf{F}, \alpha)$. Furthermore, we show that the analytic index $\textrm{ind}^a_k$ and the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck type formula in odd $\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory refine the geometric bundle part of the analytic index and the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem in $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory, respectively. An as intermediate result, we give a proof that the analytic indexes in differential $K$-theory defined without the kernel bundle assumption via the Atiyah-Singer-Gorokhovsky-Lott approach and the Miscenko-Fomenko-Freed-Lott approach, respectively, are equal.

Abstract:Index theory for Lorentzian Dirac operators is a young subject with significant differences to elliptic index theory. It is based on microlocal analysis instead of standard elliptic theory and one of the main features is that a nontrivial index is caused by topologically nontrivial dynamics rather than nontrivial topology of the base manifold. In this paper we establish a local index formula for Lorentzian Dirac-type operators on globally hyperbolic spacetimes. This local formula implies an index theorem for general Dirac-type operators on spatially compact spacetimes with Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions on Cauchy hypersurfaces. This is significantly more general than the previously known theorems that require the compatibility of the connection with Clifford multiplication and the spatial Dirac operator on the Cauchy hypersurface to be selfadjoint with respect to a positive definite inner product.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of strong local Torelli and T-class for polarized manifolds, and prove that strong local Torelli implies global Torelli theorem on the Torelli spaces for polarized manifolds in the T-class. We discuss many new examples of projective manifolds for which such global Torelli theorem holds. As applications we prove that, in these cases, a canonical completion of the Torelli space is a bounded pseudoconvex domain in complex Euclidean space, and show that generic Torelli implies global Torelli on moduli space with certain level structure.

Abstract:We discuss the local index theorem for cofinite Riemann surfaces in a pedagogical way, from a more computational perspective. Given a cofinite Riemann surface $X$, let $\Delta_n$ be the $n$-Laplacian and let $N_n$ be the Gram matrix of a basis of holomorphic $n$-differentials on $X$. The local index theorem says that on the Teichmüller space $T(X)$, the second variation of $\log\det\Delta_n-\log \det N_n$ can be written as a sum of three symplectic forms $\omega_{\text{WP}}$, $\omega_{\text{TZ}}^{\text{cusp}}$ and $\omega_{\text{TZ}}^{\text{ell}}$. These are the symplectic forms for the three Kähler metrics on $T(X)$ -- the Weil-Petersson metric, the parabolic Takhtajan-Zograf (TZ) metric and the elliptic Takhtajan-Zograf metric.

The local cohomology of vector fields

Abstract:We compute the local cohomology of vector fields on a manifold. In the smooth case this recovers the diagonal cohomology studied in work of Losik, Guillemin, Fuks and others. In the holomorphic case this cohomology has recently appeared in work of Hennion and Kapranov in their study of the Lie algebra cohomology of vector fields on a complex manifold. Additionally, we construct explicit representatives for cocycles in Gelfand--Fuks cohomology via descent.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:We derive a local index theorem in Quillen's form for families of Cauchy-Riemann operators on orbifold Riemann surfaces (or Riemann orbisurfaces) that are quotients of the hyperbolic plane by the action of cofinite finitely generated Fuchsian groups. Each conical point (or a conjugacy class of primitive elliptic elements in the Fuchsian group) gives rise to an extra term in the local index theorem that is proportional to the symplectic form of a new Kähler metric on the moduli space of Riemann orbisurfaces. We find a simple formula for a local Kähler potential of the elliptic metric and show that when the order of elliptic element becomes large, the elliptic metric converges to the cuspidal one corresponding to a puncture on the orbisurface (or a conjugacy class of primitive parabolic elements). We also give a simple example of a relation between the elliptic metric and special values of Selberg's zeta function.

Abstract:We prove the local index theorem for the Rarita-Schwinger operator and higher Dirac operators using Gilkey's invariance theory. That is, we show that the supertrace of the heat kernel of a given geometric operator converges as time goes to zero, and identifies the limit as the Chern-Weil form of the Atiyah-Singer integrand.

Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.

Abstract:We describe a general construction providing index theorems localizing the Chern classes of the normal bundle of a subvariety inside a complex manifold. As particular instances of our construction we recover both Lehmann-Suwa's generalization of the classical Camacho-Sad index theorem for holomorphic foliations and our index theorem for holomorphic maps with positive dimensional fixed point set. Furthermore, we also obtain generalizations of recent index theorems of Camacho-Movasati-Sad and Camacho-Lehmann for holomorphic foliations transversal to a subvariety.

Abstract:Spectral triples for nonunital algebras model locally compact spaces in noncommutative geometry. In the present text, we prove the local index formula for spectral triples over nonunital algebras, without the assumption of local units in our algebra. This formula has been successfully used to calculate index pairings in numerous noncommutative examples. The absence of any other effective method of investigating index problems in geometries that are genuinely noncommutative, particularly in the nonunital situation, was a primary motivation for this study and we illustrate this point with two examples in the text. In order to understand what is new in our approach in the commutative setting we prove an analogue of the Gromov-Lawson relative index formula (for Dirac type operators) for even dimensional manifolds with bounded geometry, without invoking compact supports. For odd dimensional manifolds our index formula appears to be completely new. As we prove our local index formula in the framework of semifinite noncommutative geometry we are also able to prove, for manifolds of bounded geometry, a version of Atiyah's L^2-index Theorem for covering spaces. We also explain how to interpret the McKean-Singer formula in the nonunital case. In order to prove the local index formula, we develop an integration theory compatible with a refinement of the existing pseudodifferential calculus for spectral triples. We also clarify some aspects of index theory for nonunital algebras.

Abstract:Using adiabatic limits of Eta invariants, Rho invariants of the total space of a fiber bundle are investigated. One concern is to formulate the aspects of local index theory for families of Dirac operator in terms of the odd signature operator, and place known results in a context which permits the treatment of Rho invariants. The main focus is, however, to use this to compute Rho invariants for explicit classes of fibered 3-manifolds. More precisely, we consider $\U(1)$-Rho invariants of principal $S^1$-bundles over closed, oriented surfaces as well as mapping tori with torus fiber. Hyperbolic monodromy maps deserve particular attention. When discussing them, the logarithm of a generalized Dedekind Eta function naturally appears. An explicit formula for $\U(1)$-Rho invariants is then deduced from a transformation formula for these Dedekind Eta functions.

Local holomorphic De Rham cohomology introduced in this paper and punctured local holomorphic De Rham cohomology introduced by Huang-Luk-Yau are two important local invariants for varieties with isolated singularities. We find some relations between these two invariants and the invariants defined by Steenbrink on surface singularities, and from which we use these two invariants to describe when a Gorenstein singularity is quasi-homogeneous.

Abstract:In this short note we would like to show how it is possible to use techniques introduced in the theory of local dynamics of holomorphic germs tangent to the identity to study global meromorphic self-maps of the complex projective space. In particular we shall show how a meromorphic self-map of a complex projective space induces a holomorphic foliation of the projective space in Riemann surfaces, whose singular points are exactly the fixed points and the indeterminacy points of the map; and we shall prove three index theorems, relating suitably defined local residues at the fixed and indeterminacy points with Chern classes of the projective space.

Abstract:We study the local Gromov-Witten invariants of 𝒪 ( k )⊕ 𝒪 (− k −2) → ℙ 1 by localization techniques and the Mariño-Vafa formula, using suitable circle actions. They are identified with the equivariant Riemann-Roch indices of some power of the determinant of the tautological sheaves on the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane. We also compute the corresponding Gopakumar-Vafa invariants and make some conjectures about them.

Abstract:We show that any continuous $\mathbf{C}$-linear Lie algebra splitting of the symbol map from the Atiyah algebra of a vector bundle on a complex manifold is given by a differential operator of order at most the rank of the bundle plus one. Bundles equipped with such a splitting can be thought of as \emph{infinitesimally equivariant} bundles, and our theorem implies these are, in a certain sense, in a categorical formal neighbourhood of vector bundles with a flat connection.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce several new secondary invariants for Dirac operators on a complete Riemannian manifold with a uniform positive scalar curvature metric outside a compact set and use these secondary invariants to establish a higher index theorem for the Dirac operators. We apply our theory to study the secondary invariants for a manifold with corner with positive scalar curvature metric on each boundary face.
