Abstract:Under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we illustrate that the ratio of the set of primes $p$ such that $\langle -1, 2 \rangle$ has an odd prime index in $\mathbb{F}_p^*$ to the set of primes $p$ such that the subgroup has index greater than $2$ nears $46 \%$.

Abstract:Theorem 13 of 《A note on p-nilpotence and solvability of finite groups, Journal of Algebra, 321 (5)》asserts the solvability of finite groups in which some maximal subgroups have prime indices. In this paper, we offer a new proof for this theorem. Further, we show that if G is such a finite group that either its each Sylow subgroup P is normal in G or the maximal subgroup of G containing NG ( P) has prime index, then G must be solvable.

Abstract:Zhao established a curious congruence, i.e., for any prime p≥3,∑i+j+k=pi,j,k>01ijk≡−2Bp−3(modp). In this note we prove that for any prime p≥3 and positive integer r,∑i+j+k=pri,j,k∈Pp1ijk≡−2pr−1Bp−3(modpr), where Pn denotes the set of positive integers which are prime to n.

Abstract:Given a set of primes $\pi$, the $\pi$-index of an element $x$ of a finite group $G$ is the $\pi$-part of the index of the centralizer of $x$ in $G$. If $\pi=\{p\}$ is a singleton, we just say the $p$-index. If the $\pi$-index of $x$ is equal to $p_1^{k_1}\ldots p^{k_s}$, where $p_1,\ldots,p_s$ are distinct primes, then we set $\exp_\pi(x)=k_1+\ldots+k_s$. In this short note, we study how the number $\epsilon_\pi(G)=\max\{\epsilon_\pi(x):x\in G\}$ restricts the structure of the factor group $G/Z(G)$ of $G$ by its center. First, for a finite group $G$, we prove that $\phi_p(G/Z(G))\leq\epsilon_p(G)$, where $\phi_p(G/Z(G))$ is the Frattini length of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G/Z(G)$. Second, for a $\pi$-separable finite group $G$, we prove that $l_\pi(G/Z(G))\leq\epsilon_\pi(G)$, where $l_{\pi}(G/Z(G))$ is the $\pi$-length of $G/Z(G)$.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a multiplicative subgroup of $\mathbb Z_p^*$. Define the $k$-fold sumset of $A$ to be $kA=\{x_1+\dots+x_k:x_i \in A,1\leq i\leq k\}$. We show that $6A\supseteq \mathbb Z_p^*$ for $|A| > p^{\frac {11}{23} +\epsilon}$. In addition, we extend a result of Shkredov to show that $|2A|\gg |A|^{\frac 85-\epsilon}$ for $|A|\ll p^{\frac 59}$.

On the $p$-ranks of class groups of certain Galois extensions

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $\zeta_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.

Abstract:We make many new observations on primitive roots modulo primes. For an odd prime $p$ and an integer $c$, we establish a theorem concerning $\sum_g(\frac{g+c}p)$, where $g$ runs over all the primitive roots modulo $p$ among $1,\ldots,p-1$, and $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. On the basis of our numerical computations, we formulate 35 conjectures involving primitive roots modulo primes. For example, we conjecture that for any prime $p$ there is a primitive root $g 3$ there is a prime $q 3$ there exists a Fibonacci number $F_k 3$.
On the conjecture of non-inner automorphisms of finite $p$-groups

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number. A longstanding conjecture asserts that every finite non-abelian $p$-group has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is an odd order finite non-abelian monolithic $p$-group such that every maximal subgroup of $G$ is non-abelian and $[Z(M), g] \leq Z(G)$ for every maximal subgroup $M$ of $G$ and $g \in G \setminus M$. Then $G$ has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$ leaving the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ elementwise fixed.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field and $G$ a finitely generated torsion-free subgroup of $K^\times$. Given a prime $\mathfrak p$ of $K$ we denote by ${\rm ind}_{\mathfrak p}(G)$ the index of the subgroup $(G\bmod\mathfrak p)$ of the multiplicative group of the residue field at $\mathfrak p$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis we determine the natural density of primes of $K$ for which this index is in a prescribed set $S$ and has prescribed Frobenius in a finite Galois extension $F$ of $K$. We study in detail the natural density in case $S$ is an arithmetic progression, in particular its positivity.

A number-theoretic problem concerning pseudo-real Riemann surfaces

Abstract:Motivated by their research on automorphism groups of pseudo-real Riemann surfaces, Bujalance, Cirre and Conder have conjectured that there are infinitely many primes $p$ such that $p+2$ has all its prime factors $q\equiv -1$ mod~$(4)$. We use theorems of Landau and Raikov to prove that the number of integers $n\le x$ with only such prime factors $q$ is asymptotic to $cx/\sqrt{\ln x}$ for a specific constant $c=0.4865\ldots$. Heuristic arguments, following Hardy and Littlewood, then yield a conjecture that the number of such primes $p\le x$ is asymptotic to $c'\int_2^x(\ln t)^{-3/2}dt$ for a constant $c'=0.8981\ldots$. The theorem, the conjecture and a similar conjecture applying the Bateman--Horn Conjecture to other pseudo-real Riemann surfaces are supported by evidence from extensive computer searches.

Abstract:Let π be a proper subset of the set of all prime numbers. Denote by r the least prime number not in π, and put m = r , if r = 2, 3, and m = r − 1 if r ≥ 5. We look at the conjecture that a conjugacy class D in a finite group G generates a π-subgroup in G (or, equivalently, is contained in the π-radical) iff any m elements from D generate a π-group. Previously, this conjecture was confirmed for finite groups whose every non-Abelian composition factor is isomorphic to a sporadic, alternating, linear or unitary simple group. Now it is confirmed for groups the list of composition factors of which is added up by exceptional groups of Lie type 2 B 2 ( q ), 2 G 2 ( q ), G 2 ( q ), and 3 D 4 ( q ).

Abstract:Let $P_{r}$ denote an integer with at most $r$ prime factors counted with multiplicity. In this paper we prove that for any $0<\lambda<\frac{1}{4}$, the inequality $\{\sqrt{p}\}<p^{-\lambda}$ has infinitely many solutions in primes $p$ such that $p+2=P_r$, where $r=\lfloor \frac{8}{1-4\lambda} \rfloor$. This generalizes the previous result of Cai.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to find all the prime numbers p for which whenever we add to p an odd square less than p we obtain a number which has at most two different prime factors. We solve completely the cases $p\equiv 1,3,5 \pmod 8$. The idea of the proof in these cases is to find the class number for the quadratic imaginary field $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt p)$. Since we know all these quadratic imaginary fields with class number 1, 2 or 4, we are able to solve these cases. The most interesting case is $p\equiv 7 \pmod 8$. We prove in this case that the Ono invariant of the field equals the class number. S. Louboutin succeeded to find all these fields, with one possible exception. Assuming a Restricted Riemann Hypothesis, the list of Louboutin is complete.

Abstract:We prove a prime number theorem first for the classical Rankin-Selberg L-function $L(s,\pi\times\pi')$ over any Galois extension with $\pi$ and $\pi'$ unitary automorphic cuspidal representations of $GL_n$ and $GL_m$ respectively with at least one of the representations subject to a self-contragredient assumption. We then extend these results to two representations $\pi$ defined on $GL_n/E$ and $\pi'$ defined on $GL_m/F$ with $E$ and $F$ cylic algebraic number fields of coprime degree where $\pi$ and $\pi'$ admit a base change lift from $\mathbb{Q}$ again given a self-contragredient assumption on at least one of the representations which lift to $\pi$ or $\pi'$.

A Note on Generalized Repunit Numerical Semigroups

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $F(A)$ is the largest integer not belonging to the numerical semigroup $\langle A\rangle$ generated by $A$. The genus $g(A)$ is the number of positive integer elements that are not in $\langle A\rangle$. The Frobenius problem is to find $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ for a given sequence $A$. In this note, we study the Frobenius problem of $A=\left(a,ba+d,b^2a+\frac{b^2-1}{b-1}d,...,b^ka+\frac{b^k-1}{b-1}d\right)$ and obtain formulas for $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ when $a\geq k-1$. Our formulas simplifies further for some special cases, such as repunit, Mersenne and Thabit numerical semigroups. The idea is similar to that in [\cite{LiuXin23},<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.03459" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.03459">arXiv:2306.03459</a>].

Abstract: We study the parity of rank of $2$-${\rm Selmer}$ groups associated to $\pi/3$ and $2\pi/3$-congruent numbers. Our second result gives some positive densities about $\pi/3$ and $2\pi/3$ non-congruent numbers which can support the even part of Goldfeld's conjecture. We give some necessary conditions such that $n$ is non $\pi/3$-congruent number for elliptic curves $E_n$ whose Shafarevich-Tate group is non-trivial. In the last section, we show that for $n=pq\equiv 5(resp. \ 11)\pmod{24}$, the density of non $\pi/3$($resp.$ $2\pi/3$)-congruent numbers is at least 75\%, where $p,q$ are primes.
