Abstract:The method of symmetry reduction is systematically applied to derive several classes of invariant solutions for the generalized Weierstrass system inducing constant mean curvature surfaces and to the associated two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. A classification of subgroups with generic orbits of codimension one of the Lie point symmetry group for these systems provides a tool for introducing symmetry variables and reduces the initial systems to different nonequivalent systems of ordinary differential equations. We perform a singularity analysis for them in order to establish whether these ordinary differential equations have the Painlevé property. These ordinary differential equations can then be transformed to standard forms and next solved in terms of elementary and Jacobi elliptic functions. This results in a large number of new solutions and in some cases new interesting constant mean curvature surfaces are found. Furthermore, this symmetry analysis is extended to include conditional symmetries by subjecting the original system to certain differential constraints. In this case, several new types of nonsplitting algebraic, trigonometric, and hyperbolic multisoliton solutions have been obtained in explicit form. Some physical interpretation of these results in the areas of fluid membranes, string theory, two-dimensionl gravity, and cosmology are given.

Abstract:In this article, the investigation into the Lie symmetry algebra of the geodesic equations of the canonical connection on a Lie group was continued. The key ideas of Lie group, Lie algebra, linear connection, and symmetry were quickly reviewed. The focus was on those Lie groups whose Lie algebra was six-dimensional solvable and indecomposable and for which the nilradical was abelian and had a one-dimensional center. Based on the list of Lie algebras compiled by Turkowski, there were eight algebras to consider that were denoted by $ A_{6, 20} $–$ A_{6, 27} $. For each Lie algebra, a comprehensive symmetry analysis of the system of geodesic equations was carried out. For each symmetry Lie algebra, the nilradical and a complement to the nilradical inside the radical, as well as a semi-simple factor, were identified.

Abstract:Formal actions of Lie algebras over vector spaces are introduced in a purely algebraic way, as a mimic of infinitesimal operations of Banach Lie algebras over Banach analytic manifolds. In analogy with the case of abstract groups, complete wreath products and triangular actions are then defined for Lie algebras acting "en cascade" over vector spaces. Finally, a Kaloujnine-Krasner type theorem for Lie algebra extensions is proved. ----- En mimant les lois d'opérations infinitésimales des algèbres de Lie sur les variété s analytiques banachiques, on introduit de manière purement algèbrique la notion d'action formelle d'une algèbre de Lie sur un espace vectoriel. Ensuite, par analogie avec le cas des groupes abstraits, et en faisant opérer les algèbres de Lie "en cascade", on définit produit d'entrelacement ("wreath product") et action triangulaire pour les algèbres de Lie. On démontre enfin un théorème du type Kaloujnine-Krasner pour les extensions d'algèbres de Lie.

Abstract:This is a survey concerning the relationship between Lie Groupoids (and their morphisms) and singular foliations in the sense of Sussmann-Stefan (considered from a purely geometrical point of view). We focus on the interaction between the algebraic and differentiable structures underlying Lie groupoids, and between groups and graphs of equivalence relations, regarded as two basic degeneracies for groupoids. Historical remarks, motivations and examples are developed in five appendices.

Abstract:Groupoids provide a more appropriate framework for differential geometry than principal bundles. Synthetic differential geometry is the avant-garde branch of differential geometry, in which nilpotent infinitesimals are available in abundance. The principal objective in this paper is to show within our favorite framework of synthetic differential geometry that the tangent space of the group of bisections of a microlinear groupoid at its identity is naturally a Lie algebra. We give essentially distinct two proofs for its Jacobi identity.

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

Abstract:In a previous paper, it was proposed to see the deformations of a common pattern as the action of an infinite dimensional group. We show in this paper that this approac h can be applied numerically for pattern matching in image analysis of digital images. Using Lie group ideas, we construct a distance between deformations defined through a metric given the cost of infinitesimal deformations. Then we propose a numerical scheme to solve a variational problem involving this distance and leading to a sub-optimal gradient pattern matching. Its links with fluid models are established.

Abstract:This paper addresses a new approach to find a spectrum of information measures for the process of digital circuit synthesis. We consider the problem from the information engine point of view. The circuit synthesis as a whole and different steps of the design process (an example of decision diagram is given) are presented via such measurements as entropy, logical work and information vitality. We also introduce new information measures to provide better estimates of synthesis criteria. We show that the basic properties of information engine, such as the conservation law of information flow and the equilibrium law of information can be formulated.

Abstract:In a series of publications we developed “differential geometry” on discrete sets based on concepts of noncommutative geometry. In particular, it turned out that first-order differential calculi (over the algebra of functions) on a discrete set are in bijective correspondence with digraph structures where the vertices are given by the elements of the set. A particular class of digraphs are Cayley graphs, also known as group lattices. They are determined by a discrete group G and a finite subset S. There is a distinguished subclass of “bicovariant” Cayley graphs with the property ad(S)S⊂S. We explore the properties of differential calculi which arise from Cayley graphs via the above correspondence. The first-order calculi extend to higher orders and then allow us to introduce further differential geometric structures. Furthermore, we explore the properties of “discrete” vector fields which describe deterministic flows on group lattices. A Lie derivative with respect to a discrete vector field and an inner product with forms is defined. The Lie–Cartan identity then holds on all forms for a certain subclass of discrete vector fields. We develop elements of gauge theory and construct an analog of the lattice gauge theory (Yang–Mills) action on an arbitrary group lattice. Also linear connections are considered and a simple geometric interpretation of the torsion is established. By taking a quotient with respect to some subgroup of the discrete group, generalized differential calculi associated with so-called Schreier diagrams are obtained.

Abstract:This paper shows how left and right actions of Lie groups on a manifold may be used to complement one another in a variational reformulation of optimal control problems equivalently as geodesic boundary value problems with symmetry. We prove an equivalence theorem to this effect and illustrate it with several examples. In finite-dimensions, we discuss geodesic flows on the Lie groups SO(3) and SE(3) under the left and right actions of their respective Lie algebras. In an infinite-dimensional example, we discuss optimal large-deformation matching of one closed curve to another embedded in the same plane. In the curve-matching example, the manifold $\Emb(S^1, \mathbb{R}^2)$ comprises the space of closed curves $S^1$ embedded in the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. The diffeomorphic left action $\Diff(\mathbb{R}^2)$ deforms the curve by a smooth invertible time-dependent transformation of the coordinate system in which it is embedded, while leaving the parameterisation of the curve invariant. The diffeomorphic right action $\Diff(S^1)$ corresponds to a smooth invertible reparameterisation of the $S^1$ domain coordinates of the curve. As we show, this right action unlocks an important degree of freedom for geodesically matching the curve shapes using an equivalent fixed boundary value problem, without being constrained to match corresponding points along the template and target curves at the endpoint in time.

Symmetry group analysis of an ideal plastic flow

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Lie point symmetry group of a system describing an ideal plastic plane flow in two dimensions in order to find analytical solutions. The infinitesimal generators that span the Lie algebra for this system are obtained. We completely classify the subalgebras of up to codimension two in conjugacy classes under the action of the symmetry group. Based on invariant forms, we use Ansatzes to compute symmetry reductions in such a way that the obtained solutions cover simultaneously many invariant and partially invariant solutions. We calculate solutions of the algebraic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric and elliptic type. Some solutions depending on one or two arbitrary functions of one variable have also been found. In some cases, the shape of a potentially feasible extrusion die corresponding to the solution is deduced. These tools could be used to thin, curve, undulate or shape a ring in an ideal plastic material.

Abstract:We describe how to recover a Lie structure on a twist over a Hausdorff étale groupoid from functional-analytic data in the spirit of Connes' reconstruction theorem for manifolds. We first characterise when a smooth structure on the unit space of a Hausdorff étale groupoid can be extended to a Lie-groupoid structure on the whole groupoid. We introduce Lie twists over Hausdorff Lie groupoids, building on Kumjian's notion of a twist over a topological groupoid. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on a family of sections of a twist over a Lie groupoid under which the twist can be made into a Lie twist so that all the specified sections are smooth. We use these results in the setting of twists over étale groupoids to describe conditions on a Cartan pair of C*-algebras and a family of normalisers of the subalgebra, under which Renault's Weyl twist for the pair can be made into a Lie twist for which the given normalisers correspond to smooth sections.

Abstract:This is a survey of basic facts about the differentiable structure of infinite dimensional Lie groups. The groups of diffeomorphisms and of invertible Fourier integral operators on a compact manifold have a structure which is weaker than that of a Lie group in the classical sense. This differentiable structure is called ILH (inverse limit of Hilbert) Lie group. We indicate applications to the well-posedness problem, to hydrodynamics, plasma physics, general relativity, quantum field theory, and completely integrable PDE’s.

Abstract:The Killing operator on a Riemannian manifold is a linear differential operator on vector fields whose kernel provides the infinitesimal Riemannian symmetries. The Killing operator is best understood in terms of its prolongation, which entails some simple tensor identities. These simple identities can be viewed as arising from the identification of certain Lie algebra cohomologies. The point is that this case provides a model for more complicated operators similarly concerned with symmetry.

Abstract:This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $\Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.

Abstract:A Lie algebroid is a generalization of Lie algebra that provides a general framework to describe the symmetries of a manifold. In this paper, we introduce Lie algebroid index theory and study the Lie algebroid Dolbeault operator. We also introduce Connes' index theory on regular foliated manifolds to obtain a generalized Riemann-Roch theorem on manifolds with regular foliation. We show that the topological side of Connes' index theory can be identified with the topological side of Lie algebroid index theory. Finally, we introduce Lie algebroid Kodaira vanishing theorem, and provide some applications and examples. The Lie algebroid Kodaira vanishing theorem can be used on the analytic side of Connes' theorem to attest to the criterion of a positive line bundle from its topological information.
