Abstract:Resolving a recent problem of Bell, Frieze, and Marbach, we establish both the threshold result of Frankston--Kahn--Narayanan--Park, and its strengthening by Spiro, in the rainbow setting. This has applications to the thresholds for rainbow structures in random graphs where each edge is given a uniformly random color from a set of given colors.

Abstract:We investigate the rainbow k -connectivity rc k and ( t , k ) -rainbow index rx t , k of the inhomogeneous random graph G ( n , p ) , where any two vertices i and j are joined by an edge e i j with probability p ( e i j ) independently of all other edges, and p = { p ( e i j ) } . We show that the known threshold functions for the monotone properties rc k ( G ( n , p ) ) ≤ r and rx t , k ( G ( n , p ) ) ≤ t for integers k , r and t in the Erdős–Rényi random graph G ( n , p ) can be extended to ‘threshold landscapes’ in terms of G ( n , p ) . In contrast to the traditional plain thresholds characterized as a watershed, our threshold landscapes have two surfaces that are inherently interwoven with each other. This sheds some light on the network connectivity as appropriate trade-offs are allowed and is potentially applicable in network science where connections are not always equal.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{G}:=(G_1, G_2, G_3)$ be a triple of graphs on the same vertex set $V$ of size $n$. A rainbow triangle in $\mathbf{G}$ is a triple of edges $(e_1, e_2, e_3)$ with $e_i\in G_i$ for each $i$ and $\{e_1, e_2, e_3\}$ forming a triangle in $V$. The triples $\mathbf{G}$ not containing rainbow triangles, also known as Gallai colouring templates, are a widely studied class of objects in extremal combinatorics. In the present work, we fully determine the set of edge densities $(\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \alpha_3)$ such that if $\vert E(G_i)\vert> \alpha_i n^2$ for each $i$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, then $\mathbf{G}$ must contain a rainbow triangle. This resolves a problem raised by Aharoni, DeVos, de la Maza, Montejanos and Šámal, generalises several previous results on extremal Gallai colouring templates, and proves a recent conjecture of Frankl, Györi, He, Lv, Salia, Tompkins, Varga and Zhu.

Essentially tight bounds for rainbow cycles in proper edge-colourings

Abstract:An edge-coloured graph is said to be rainbow if no colour appears more than once. Extremal problems involving rainbow objects have been a focus of much research over the last decade as they capture the essence of a number of interesting problems in a variety of areas. A particularly intensively studied question due to Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte from 2007 asks for the maximum possible average degree of a properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow cycle. Improving upon a series of earlier bounds, Tomon proved an upper bound of $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ for this question. Very recently, Janzer-Sudakov and Kim-Lee-Liu-Tran independently removed the $o(1)$ term in Tomon's bound, showing a bound of $O(\log^2 n)$. We prove an upper bound of $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ for this maximum possible average degree when there is no rainbow cycle. Our result is tight up to the $o(1)$ term, and so it essentially resolves this question. In addition, we observe a connection between this problem and several questions in additive number theory, allowing us to extend existing results on these questions for abelian groups to the case of non-abelian groups.

Abstract:An edge (vertex) coloured graph is rainbow-connected if there is a rainbow path between any two vertices, i.e. a path all of whose edges (internal vertices) carry distinct colours. Rainbow edge (vertex) connectivity of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of colours needed for a rainbow edge (vertex) colouring of $G$. In this paper we propose a very simple approach to studying rainbow connectivity in graphs. Using this idea, we give a unified proof of several known results, as well as some new ones.

Abstract:We show that for every integer $m \ge 2$ and large $n$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with at least $n (\log n)^{53}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_m$. This is sharp up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our proof method exploits the connection between the mixing time of random walks and expansion in graphs.

Abstract:We show that for any integer $k\ge 1$ there exists an integer $t_0(k)$ such that for integers $t, k_1, \ldots, k_{t+1}, n$ with $t>t_0(k)$, $\max\{k_1, \ldots, k_{t+1}\}\le k$, and $n > 2k(t+1)$, the following holds: If $F_i \subseteq {[n]\choose k_i}$ and $|F_i|> {n\choose k_i}-{n-t\choose k_i} - {n-t-k \choose k_i-1} + 1$ for all $i \in [t+1]$, then either $\{F_1,\ldots, F_{t+1}\}$ admits a rainbow matching of size $t+1$ or there exists $W\in {[n]\choose t}$ such that $W$ is a vertex cover of $F_i$ for all $i\in [t+1]$. This may be viewed as a rainbow non-uniform extension of the classical Hilton-Milner theorem. We also show that the same holds for every $t$ and $n > 2k^3t$, generalizing a recent stability result of Frankl and Kupavskii on matchings to rainbow matchings.

Abstract:Let G ≔( G 1 , G 2 , G 3 ) be a triple of graphs on a common vertex set V of size n . A rainbow triangle in G is a triple of edges (e 1 , e 2 , e 3 ) with e i ∈ G i for each i and {e 1 , e 2 , e 3 } forming a triangle in V . In this paper we consider the following question: what triples of minimum‐degree conditions (δ( G 1 ) , δ( G 2 ) , δ( G 3 ) ) guarantee the existence of a rainbow triangle? This may be seen as a minimum‐degree version of a problem of Aharoni, DeVos, de la Maza, Montejano and Šámal on density conditions for rainbow triangles, which was recently resolved by the authors. We establish that the extremal behaviour in the minimum‐degree setting differs strikingly from that seen in the density setting, with discrete jumps as opposed to continuous transitions. Our work leaves a number of natural questions open, which we discuss.

Abstract:Let $k$ and $n$ be two integers, with $k\geq 3$, $n\equiv 0\pmod k$, and $n$ sufficiently large. We determine the $(k-1)$-degree threshold for the existence of a rainbow perfect matchings in $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph. This implies the result of Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi on the $(k-1)$-degree threshold for the existence of perfect matchings in $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraphs. In our proof, we identify the extremal configurations of closeness, and consider whether or not the hypergraph is close to the extremal configuration. In addition, we also develop a novel absorbing device and generalize the absorbing lemma of Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi.

Tight bounds for rainbow partial $F$-tiling in edge-colored complete hypergraphs

Abstract:For an $r$-graph $F$ and integers $n,t$ satisfying $t \le n/v(F)$, let $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ denote the minimum integer $N$ such that every edge-coloring of $K_{n}^{r}$ using $N$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $tF$, where $tF$ is the $r$-graphs consisting of $t$ vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. The case $t=1$ is the classical anti-Ramsey problem proposed by Erdős--Simonovits--Sós~\cite{ESS75}. When $F$ is a single edge, this becomes the rainbow matching problem introduced by Schiermeyer~\cite{Sch04} and Özkahya--Young~\cite{OY13}. We conduct a systematic study of $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ for the case where $t$ is much smaller than $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)/n^{r-1}$. Our first main result provides a reduction of $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ to $\mathrm{ar}(n,2F)$ when $F$ is bounded and smooth, two properties satisfied by most previously studied hypergraphs. Complementing the first result, the second main result, which utilizes gaps between Turán numbers, determines $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ for relatively smaller $t$. Together, these two results determine $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ for a large class of hypergraphs. Additionally, the latter result has the advantage of being applicable to hypergraphs with unknown Turán densities, such as the famous tetrahedron $K_{4}^{3}$.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 1090-1112, March 2024. We call an edge-colored graph rainbow if all of its edges receive distinct colors. An edge-colored graph [math] is called [math]-rainbow saturated if [math] does not contain a rainbow copy of [math] and adding an edge of any color to [math] creates a rainbow copy of [math]. The rainbow saturation number [math] is the minimum number of edges in an [math]-vertex [math]-rainbow saturated graph. Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz conjectured that [math] for fixed [math]. Disproving this conjecture, we establish that for every [math], there exists a constant [math] such that [math] and [math]. Recently, Behague, Johnston, Letzter, Morrison, and Ogden independently gave a slightly weaker upper bound which was sufficient to disprove the conjecture. They also introduced the weak rainbow saturation number and asked whether this is equal to the rainbow saturation number of [math], since the standard weak saturation number of complete graphs equals the standard saturation number. Surprisingly, our lower bound separates the rainbow saturation number from the weak rainbow saturation number, answering this question in the negative. The existence of the constant [math] resolves another of their questions in the affirmative for complete graphs. Furthermore, we show that the conjecture of Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz is true if we have an additional assumption that the edge-colored [math]-rainbow saturated graph must be rainbow. As an ingredient of the proof, we study graphs which are [math]-saturated with respect to the operation of deleting one edge and adding two edges.

Abstract:We say that $k$ graphs $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$ on a common vertex set of size $n$ contain a rainbow copy of a graph $H$ if their union contains a copy of $H$ with each edge belonging to a distinct $G_i$. We provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Frankl on the maximum product of the sizes of the edge sets of three graphs avoiding a rainbow triangle. We propose an alternative conjecture, which we prove under the additional assumption that the union of the three graphs is complete. Furthermore, we determine the maximum product of the sizes of the edge sets of three graphs or four graphs avoiding a rainbow path of length three.

On the Chromatic Thresholds of Hypergraphs

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of r -uniform hypergraphs. The chromatic threshold of $\mathcal{F}$ is the infimum of all non-negative reals c such that the subfamily of $\mathcal{F}$ comprising hypergraphs H with minimum degree at least $c \binom{| V(H) |}{r-1}$ has bounded chromatic number. This parameter has a long history for graphs ( r = 2), and in this paper we begin its systematic study for hypergraphs. Łuczak and Thomassé recently proved that the chromatic threshold of the so-called near bipartite graphs is zero, and our main contribution is to generalize this result to r -uniform hypergraphs. For this class of hypergraphs, we also show that the exact Turán number is achieved uniquely by the complete ( r + 1)-partite hypergraph with nearly equal part sizes. This is one of very few infinite families of non-degenerate hypergraphs whose Turán number is determined exactly. In an attempt to generalize Thomassen's result that the chromatic threshold of triangle-free graphs is 1/3, we prove bounds for the chromatic threshold of the family of 3-uniform hypergraphs not containing { abc, abd, cde }, the so-called generalized triangle. In order to prove upper bounds we introduce the concept of fibre bundles , which can be thought of as a hypergraph analogue of directed graphs. This leads to the notion of fibre bundle dimension , a structural property of fibre bundles that is based on the idea of Vapnik–Chervonenkis dimension in hypergraphs. Our lower bounds follow from explicit constructions, many of which use a hypergraph analogue of the Kneser graph. Using methods from extremal set theory, we prove that these Kneser hypergraphs have unbounded chromatic number. This generalizes a result of Szemerédi for graphs and might be of independent interest. Many open problems remain.
Searching for (sharp) thresholds in random structures: where are we now?

Abstract:We survey the current state of affairs in the study of thresholds and sharp thresholds in random structures on the occasion of the recent proof of the Kahn--Kalai Conjecture by Park and Pham and the fairly recent proof of the satisfiability conjecture for large $k$ by Ding, Sly, and Sun. Random discrete structures appear as fundamental objects of study in many scientific and mathematical fields including statistical physics, combinatorics, algorithms and complexity, social choice theory, coding theory, and statistics. While the models and properties of interest in these fields vary widely, much progress has been made through the development of general tools applicable to large families of models and properties all at once. Historically these tools originated to solve or make progress on specific, difficult conjectures in the areas mentioned above. We will survey recent progress on some of these hard problems and describe some challenges for the future.

Abstract:In an edge-colored graph $G$, a rainbow clique $K_k$ is a $k$-complete subgraph in which all the edges have distinct colors. Let $e(G)$ and $c(G)$ be the number of edges and colors in $G$, respectively. In this paper, we show that for any $\varepsilon>0$, if $e(G)+c(G) \geq (1+\frac{k-3}{k-2}+2\varepsilon) {n\choose 2}$ and $k\geq 3$, then for sufficiently large $n$, the number of rainbow cliques $K_k$ in $G$ is $\Omega(n^k)$. We also characterize the extremal graphs $G$ without a rainbow clique $K_k$, for $k=4,5$, when $e(G)+c(G)$ is maximum. Our results not only address existing questions but also complete the findings of Ehard and Mohr (Ehard and Mohr, Rainbow triangles and cliques in edge-colored graphs. {\it European Journal of Combinatorics, 84:103037,2020}).

Abstract:Kühn, Osthus, and Treglown and, independently, Khan proved that if H is a 3-uniform hypergraph with n vertices, where n∈3Z and large, and δ1(H)>(n−12)−(2n/32), then H contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we show that for n∈3Z sufficiently large, if F1,…,Fn/3 are 3-uniform hypergraphs with a common vertex set and δ1(Fi)>(n−12)−(2n/32) for i∈[n/3], then {F1,…,Fn/3} admits a rainbow matching, i.e., a matching consisting of one edge from each Fi. This is done by converting the rainbow matching problem to a perfect matching problem in a special class of uniform hypergraphs.
Rainbow triangles in three-colored graphs

Abstract:Erdős and Sós proposed the problem of determining the maximum number F(n) of rainbow triangles in 3-edge-colored complete graphs on n vertices. They conjectured that F(n)=F(a)+F(b)+F(c)+F(d)+abc+abd+acd+bcd, where a+b+c+d=n and a,b,c,d are as equal as possible. We prove that the conjectured recurrence holds for sufficiently large n. We also prove the conjecture for n=4k for all k≥0. These results imply that lim⁡F(n)(n3)=0.4, and determine the unique limit object. In the proof we use flag algebras combined with stability arguments.
