Abstract:Kemeny's constant measures how fast a random walker moves around in a graph. Expressions for Kemeny's constant can be quite involved, and for this reason, many lines of research focus on graphs with structure that makes them amenable to more in-depth study (for example, regular graphs, acyclic graphs, and 1-connected graphs). In this article, we study Kemeny's constant for random walks on threshold graphs, which are an interesting family of graphs with properties that make examining Kemeny's constant difficult; that is, they are usually not regular, not acyclic, and not 1-connected. This article is a showcase of various techniques for calculating Kemeny's constant and related random walk parameters for graphs. We establish explicit formulae for $\mathcal{K}(G)$ in terms of the construction code of a threshold graph, and completely determine the ordering of the accessibility indices of vertices in threshold graphs.

Sharp Thresholds in Random Simple Temporal Graphs

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 2, Page 346-388, April 2024. A graph whose edges only appear at certain points in time is called a temporal graph (among other names). Such a graph is temporally connected if each ordered pair of vertices is connected by a path which traverses edges in chronological order (i.e., a temporal path). In this paper, we consider a simple model of random temporal graph, obtained from an Erdős–Rényi random graph, [math], by considering a random permutation [math] of the edges and interpreting the ranks in [math] as presence times. We give a thorough study of the temporal connectivity of such graphs and derive implications for the existence of several kinds of sparse spanners. It turns out that temporal reachability in this model exhibits a surprisingly regular sequence of thresholds. In particular, we show that at [math], any fixed pair of vertices can asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) reach each other; at [math], at least one vertex (and, in fact, any fixed vertex) can a.a.s. reach all others; and at [math], all the vertices can a.a.s. reach each other; i.e., the graph is temporally connected. Furthermore, the graph admits a temporal spanner of size [math] as soon as it becomes temporally connected, which is nearly optimal, as [math] is a lower bound. This result is quite significant because temporal graphs do not admit spanners of size [math] in general [Kempe, Kleinberg, and Kumar, J. Comput. System Sci., 64 (2002), pp. 820–842]. In fact, they do not even always admit spanners of size [math] [Axiotis and Fotakis, On the size and the approximability of minimum temporally connected subgraphs, 2016, pp. 149:1–149:14]. Thus, our result implies that the obstructions found in these works—and more generally any non-negligible obstruction—are statistically insignificant: nearly optimal spanners always exist in random temporal graphs. All the above thresholds are sharp. Carrying the study of temporal spanners a step further, we show that pivotal spanners—i.e., spanners of size [math] composed of two spanning trees glued at a single vertex (one descending in time, the other ascending subsequently)—exist a.a.s. at [math], this threshold being also sharp. Finally, we show that optimal spanners (of size [math]) also exist a.a.s. at [math]. Whether this value is a sharp threshold is open; we conjecture that it is. For completeness, we compare the above results to existing results in related areas, including edge-ordered graphs, gossip theory, and population protocols, showing that our results can be interpreted in these settings as well and that in some cases they improve known results therein. Finally, we discuss an intriguing connection between our results and Janson's celebrated results on percolation in weighted graphs.

Abstract:Consider a graph $G$ and an initial coloring, where each node is blue or red. In each round, all nodes simultaneously update their color based on a predefined rule. In a threshold model, a node becomes blue if a certain number or fraction of its neighbors are blue and red otherwise. What is the minimum number of nodes which must be blue initially so that the whole graph becomes blue eventually? We study this question for graphs which have expansion properties, parameterized by spectral gap, in particular the Erd\H{o}s-R\'{e}nyi random graph and random regular graphs.

Abstract:We discuss the amount of physical resources required to construct a given graph, where vertices are added sequentially. We naturally identify information -- distinct into instructions and memory -- and randomness as resources. Not surprisingly, we show that, in this framework, threshold graphs are the simplest possible graphs, since the construction of threshold graphs requires a single bit of instructions for each vertex and no use of memory. Large instructions without memory do not bring any advantage. With one bit of instructions and one bit of memory for each vertex, we can construct a family of perfect graphs that strictly includes threshold graphs. We consider the case in which memory lasts for a single time step, and show that as well as the standard threshold graphs, linear forests are also producible. We show further that the number of random bits (with no memory or instructions) needed to construct any graph is asymptotically the same as required for the Erdős-Rényi random graph. We also briefly consider constructing trees in this scheme. The problem of defining a hierarchy of graphs in the proposed framework is fully open.

Some bounds on the spectral radius of connected threshold graphs

Abstract:The spectral radius of a graph is the spectral radius of its adjacency matrix. A threshold graph is a simple graph whose vertices can be ordered as $v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n$, so that for each $2 \le i \le n$, vertex $v_i$ is either adjacent or nonadjacent simultaneously to all of $v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_{i-1}$. Brualdi and Hoffman initially posed and then partially solved the extremal problem of finding the simple graphs with a given number of edges that have the maximum spectral radius. This problem was subsequently completely resolved by Rowlinson. Here, we deal with the similar problem of maximizing the spectral radius over the set of connected simple graphs with a given number of vertices and edges. As shown by Brualdi and Solheid, each such extremal graph is necessarily a threshold graph. We investigate the spectral radii of threshold graphs by relying on computations involving lazy walks. Furthermore, we obtain three lower bounds and one upper bound on the spectral radius of a given connected threshold graph.

Abstract:We introduce a natural generalization of the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random graph model in which random instances of a fixed motif are added independently. The binomial random motif graph $G(H,n,p)$ is the random (multi)graph obtained by adding an instance of a fixed graph $H$ on each of the copies of $H$ in the complete graph on $n$ vertices, independently with probability $p$. We establish that every monotone property has a threshold in this model, and determine the thresholds for connectivity, Hamiltonicity, the existence of a perfect matching, and subgraph appearance. Moreover, in the first three cases we give the analogous hitting time results; with high probability, the first graph in the random motif graph process that has minimum degree one (or two) is connected and contains a perfect matching (or Hamiltonian respectively).

Abstract:An interval in which a given graph has no eigenvalues is called a gap interval. We show that for any real number R greater than , there exist infinitely many threshold graphs with gap interval (0, R ). We provide a new recurrence relation for computing the characteristic polynomial of the threshold graphs and based on it, we conclude that the sequence of the least positive (resp. largest negative) eigenvalues of a certain sequence of threshold graphs is convergent. In some particular cases, we compute the limit points.

Maximum likelihood thresholds via graph rigidity

Abstract:The maximum likelihood threshold (MLT) of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of samples to almost surely guarantee existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in the corresponding Gaussian graphical model. We give a new characterization of the MLT in terms of rigidity-theoretic properties of $G$ and use this characterization to give new combinatorial lower bounds on the MLT of any graph. We use the new lower bounds to give high-probability guarantees on the maximum likelihood thresholds of sparse Erd{ö}s-Rényi random graphs in terms of their average density. These examples show that the new lower bounds are within a polylog factor of tight, where, on the same graph families, all known lower bounds are trivial. Based on computational experiments made possible by our methods, we conjecture that the MLT of an Erd{ö}s-Rényi random graph is equal to its generic completion rank with high probability. Using structural results on rigid graphs in low dimension, we can prove the conjecture for graphs with MLT at most $4$ and describe the threshold probability for the MLT to switch from $3$ to $4$. We also give a geometric characterization of the MLT of a graph in terms of a new "lifting" problem for frameworks that is interesting in its own right. The lifting perspective yields a new connection between the weak MLT (where the maximum likelihood estimate exists only with positive probability) and the classical Hadwiger-Nelson problem.

Ordered Graph Limits and Their Applications

Abstract:The emerging theory of graph limits exhibits an analytic perspective on graphs, showing that many important concepts and tools in graph theory and its applications can be described more naturally (and sometimes proved more easily) in analytic language. We extend the theory of graph limits to the ordered setting, presenting a limit object for dense vertex-ordered graphs, which we call an orderon. As a special case, this yields limit objects for matrices whose rows and columns are ordered, and for dynamic graphs that expand (via vertex insertions) over time. Along the way, we devise an ordered locality-preserving variant of the cut distance between ordered graphs, showing that two graphs are close with respect to this distance if and only if they are similar in terms of their ordered subgraph frequencies. We show that the space of orderons is compact with respect to this distance notion, which is key to a successful analysis of combinatorial objects through their limits. We derive several applications of the ordered limit theory in extremal combinatorics, sampling, and property testing in ordered graphs. In particular, we prove a new ordered analogue of the well-known result by Alon and Stav [RS\&A'08] on the furthest graph from a hereditary property; this is the first known result of this type in the ordered setting. Unlike the unordered regime, here the random graph model $G(n, p)$ with an ordering over the vertices is not always asymptotically the furthest from the property for some $p$. However, using our ordered limit theory, we show that random graphs generated by a stochastic block model, where the blocks are consecutive in the vertex ordering, are (approximately) the furthest. Additionally, we describe an alternative analytic proof of the ordered graph removal lemma [Alon et al., FOCS'17].

Abstract:We explore the tree limits recently defined by Elek and Tardos. In particular, we find tree limits for many classes of random trees. We give general theorems for three classes of conditional Galton-Watson trees and simply generated trees, for split trees and generalized split trees (as defined here), and for trees defined by a continuous-time branching process. These general results include, for example, random labelled trees, ordered trees, random recursive trees, preferential attachment trees, and binary search trees.

Abstract:The study of substructures in random objects has a long history, beginning with Erdos and Renyi's work on subgraphs of random graphs. We study the existence of certain substructures in random subsets of vector spaces over finite fields. First we provide a general framework which can be applied to establish coarse threshold results and prove a limiting Poisson distribution at the threshold scale. To illustrate our framework we apply our results to k-term arithmetic progressions, sums, right triangles, parallelograms and affine planes. We also find coarse thresholds for the property that a random subset of a finite vector space is sum-free, or is a Sidon set.

Abstract:We consider a generalization of the so-called divide and color model recently introduced by Haggstrom. We investigate the behaviour of the magnetization in large boxes and its fluctuations. Thus, laws of large numbers and Central Limit theorems are proved, both quenched and annealed. We show that the properties of the underlying percolation process roughly influence the behaviour of the colorying model. In the subcritical case, the limit magnetization is deterministic and the Central Limit Theorem admits a Gaussian limit. A contrario, the limit magnetization is not deterministic in the supercritical case and the limit of the Central Limit Theorem is not Gaussian, except in the particular model with exactly two colors which are equally probable.

Abstract:Let $(G_n)$ be a sequence of finite connected vertex-transitive graphs with volume tending to infinity. We say that a sequence of parameters $(p_n)$ is a percolation threshold if for every $\varepsilon > 0$, the proportion $\left\lVert K_1 \right\rVert$ of vertices contained in the largest cluster under bond percolation $\mathbb{P}_p^G$ satisfies both \[ \begin{split} \lim_{n \to \infty} \mathbb{P}_{(1+\varepsilon)p_n}^{G_n} \left( \left\lVert K_1 \right\rVert \geq \alpha \right) &= 1 \quad \text{for some $\alpha > 0$, and} \lim_{n \to \infty} \mathbb{P}_{(1-\varepsilon)p_n}^{G_n} \left( \left\lVert K_1 \right\rVert \geq \alpha \right) &= 0 \quad \text{for all $\alpha > 0$}. \end{split}\] We prove that $(G_n)$ has a percolation threshold if and only if $(G_n)$ does not contain a particular infinite collection of pathological subsequences of dense graphs. Our argument uses an adaptation of Vanneuville's new proof of the sharpness of the phase transition for infinite graphs via couplings [Van22] together with our recent work with Hutchcroft on the uniqueness of the giant cluster [EH21].

Searching for (sharp) thresholds in random structures: where are we now?

Abstract:We survey the current state of affairs in the study of thresholds and sharp thresholds in random structures on the occasion of the recent proof of the Kahn--Kalai Conjecture by Park and Pham and the fairly recent proof of the satisfiability conjecture for large $k$ by Ding, Sly, and Sun. Random discrete structures appear as fundamental objects of study in many scientific and mathematical fields including statistical physics, combinatorics, algorithms and complexity, social choice theory, coding theory, and statistics. While the models and properties of interest in these fields vary widely, much progress has been made through the development of general tools applicable to large families of models and properties all at once. Historically these tools originated to solve or make progress on specific, difficult conjectures in the areas mentioned above. We will survey recent progress on some of these hard problems and describe some challenges for the future.

Counting Spanning Trees of Threshold Graphs

Abstract:Cayley's formula states that there are $n^{n-2}$ spanning trees in the complete graph on $n$ vertices; it has been proved in more than a dozen different ways over its 150 year history. The complete graphs are a special case of threshold graphs, and using Merris' Theorem and the Matrix Tree Theorem, there is a strikingly simple formula for counting the number of spanning trees in a threshold graph on $n$ vertices; it is simply the product, over $i=2,3, ...,n-1$, of the number of vertices of degree at least $i$. In this manuscript, we provide a direct combinatorial proof for this formula which does not use the Matrix Tree Theorem; the proof is an extension of Joyal's proof for Cayley's formula. Then we apply this methodology to give a formula for the number of spanning trees in any difference graph.

Abstract:A graph is called a threshold graph if it does not contain induced C4, P4 or 2K2. Such graphs have numerous applications in computer science and psychology, and they also have nice spectral properties. In this paper, we consider the distance matrix of a connected threshold graph. We show that there are no distance eigenvalues of threshold graphs lying in the interval (−2,−1) and all the eigenvalues, other than −2 or −1, are simple. Besides, we determine all threshold graphs with distinct distance eigenvalues.
