Abstract:This paper is an exploratory introduction to the major theoretical issues of the Minimalist Program, including the motivation of MP, the Minimalist definition of language, computational economy, feature checking and derivation by phase. Minimalist inquiries manifest a focus on simplicity and elegance in theoretical construction. The principle of economy advocated by Chomsky and his followers serves as the supreme constraint on syntactic computation. Closely related to this principle is the operation known as "feature checking", which functions as the basis of movement. Derivation by phase, an entirely new theory developed within the framework of MP, is emerging as a standard theory that maximally reduces syntactic computation to its minimum.

Abstract:We establish the relative minimal model program with scaling for projective morphisms of quasi-excellent algebraic spaces admitting dualizing complexes, quasi-excellent formal schemes admitting dualizing complexes, semianalytic germs of complex analytic spaces, rigid analytic spaces, Berkovich spaces, and adic spaces locally of weakly finite type over a field, all in equal characteristic zero. To do so, we prove finite generation of relative adjoint rings associated to projective morphisms of such spaces using the strategy of Cascini and Lazić and the generalization of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem to the scheme setting recently established by the second author. To prove these results uniformly, we prove GAGA theorems for Grothendieck duality and dualizing complexes to reduce to the algebraic case. In addition, we apply our methods to establish the relative minimal model program with scaling for spaces of the form above in dimensions $\le 3$ in positive and mixed characteristic, and to show that one can run the relative minimal model program with scaling for complex analytic spaces without shrinking the base at each step.

Abstract:MiniJava is a subset of the object-oriented programming language Java. Standard ML is the canonical representative of the ML family of functional programming languages, which includes F# and OCaml. Different program analysis and verification tools and techniques have been developed for both Java-like and ML-like languages. Naturally, the tools developed for a particular language emphasise accurate treatment of language features commonly used in that language. In Java, this means objects with mutable properties and dynamic method dispatch. In ML, this means higher order functions and algebraic datatypes with pattern matching. We propose to translate programs from one language into the other and use the target language's tools for analysis and verification. By doing so, we hope to identify areas for improvement in the target language's tools and suggest techniques, perhaps as used in the source language's tools, that may guide their improvement. More generally, we hope to develop tools for reasoning about programs that are more resilient to changes in the style of code and representation of data. We begin our programme by outlining a translation from MiniJava to ML that uses only the core features of ML; in particular, it avoids the use of ML's mutable references.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new axiomatic system that is a minimal axiomatization of Boolean algebras. Furthermore, the symmetric difference is shown to be algebraically analogous to the modular difference of two numbers. Finally, a new method to prove equivalent relations in a Boolean algebra is also given.

Abstract:Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) is arguably the archetypical NP-complete decision problem. Progress in SAT solving algorithms has motivated an ever increasing number of practical applications in recent years. However, many practical uses of SAT involve solving function as opposed to decision problems. Concrete examples include computing minimal unsatisfiable subsets, minimal correction subsets, prime implicates and implicants, minimal models, backbone literals, and autarkies, among several others. In most cases, solving a function problem requires a number of adaptive or non-adaptive calls to a SAT solver. Given the computational complexity of SAT, it is therefore important to develop algorithms that either require the smallest possible number of calls to the SAT solver, or that involve simpler instances. This paper addresses a number of representative function problems defined on Boolean formulas, and shows that all these function problems can be reduced to a generic problem of computing a minimal set subject to a monotone predicate. This problem is referred to as the Minimal Set over Monotone Predicate (MSMP) problem. This exercise provides new ways for solving well-known function problems, including prime implicates, minimal correction subsets, backbone literals, independent variables and autarkies, among several others. Moreover, this exercise motivates the development of more efficient algorithms for the MSMP problem. Finally the paper outlines a number of areas of future research related with extensions of the MSMP problem.

On Lower Bounding Minimal Model Count

Abstract:Minimal models of a Boolean formula play a pivotal role in various reasoning tasks. While previous research has primarily focused on qualitative analysis over minimal models; our study concentrates on the quantitative aspect, specifically counting of minimal models. Exact counting of minimal models is strictly harder than #P, prompting our investigation into establishing a lower bound for their quantity, which is often useful in related applications. In this paper, we introduce two novel techniques for counting minimal models, leveraging the expressive power of answer set programming: the first technique employs methods from knowledge compilation, while the second one draws on recent advancements in hashing-based approximate model counting. Through empirical evaluations, we demonstrate that our methods significantly improve the lower bound estimates of the number of minimal models, surpassing the performance of existing minimal model reasoning systems in terms of runtime.

Abstract:An algorithm to obtain possibly absolutely minimal realizations of a given 2-D transfer function is developed. It is algebraic in nature and requires only 1-D realization theory and basic knowledge of linear algebra. Hence, the algorithm is simple and easy to program. The algorithm is guaranteed to yield absolutely minimal realizations for 2-D transfer functions having separable numerators and may also be applicable to general 2-D systems satisfying a certain consistency condition. An example is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.< >

Abstract:Existing computer programs called proof assistants can verify the correctness of mathematical proofs but their specialized proof languages present a barrier to entry for many mathematicians. Large language models have the potential to lower this barrier, enabling mathematicians to interact with proof assistants in a more familiar vernacular. Among other advantages, this may allow mathematicians to explore radically new kinds of mathematics using an LLM-powered proof assistant to train their intuitions as well as ensure their arguments are correct. Existing proof assistants have already played this role for fields such as homotopy type theory.

Abstract:As a programming paradigm, answer set programming (ASP) brings about the usual issue of the human error. Hence, it is desirable to provide automated techniques that could help the programmer to find the error. This paper addresses the question of computing a subset-minimal correction of a contradictory ASP program. A contradictory ASP program is often undesirable and we wish to provide an automated way of fixing it. We consider a minimal correction set of a contradictory program to be an irreducible set of rules whose removal makes the program consistent. In contrast to propositional logic, corrections of ASP programs behave non-monotonically. Nevertheless, we show that a variety of algorithms for correction set computation in propositional logic can be ported to ASP. An experimental evaluation was carried showing that having a portfolio of such algorithms is indeed of benefit.

Abstract:The automated construction of physical laws from raw experimental measurements poses a great challenge in modern modelling and remains an open question. The work here presents a novel generalized Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) approach, which constitutes a rigorous theoretical formulation that best fits the given data. The proposal is based on the use of generic representation of analytical functions as binary evaluation trees which are Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) utilized to allow the construction of a superstructure out of which the optimal fitting model can be identified by solving the resulting (non-convex) MINLP problems. The trees are constructed in a way that their nodes are comprised of a linear combination of basic atomic functions, either arithmetic or unary, weighted by binary decision variables. Both single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output systems are considered, as well as more complex models comprised of differential equations or even described by series summation of algebraic terms. The aim and contribution proposed methodology in this paper is to present the most general theoretical formulatioon of how models are constructed for systems quantification via analytical function forms, irrespective of the source of data. The constructed formulation is shown to contain all formulations thus far presented in the open literature, comprising a starting point either for direct fitting or for the derivation of simplified approaches.

Abstract:Counting the number of models of a Boolean formula is a fundamental problem in artificial intelligence and reasoning. Minimal models of a Boolean formula are critical in various reasoning systems, making the counting of minimal models essential for detailed inference tasks. Existing research primarily focused on decision problems related to minimal models. In this work, we extend beyond decision problems to address the challenge of counting minimal models. Specifically, we propose a novel knowledge compilation form that facilitates the efficient counting of minimal models. Our approach leverages the idea of justification and incorporates theories from answer set counting.

Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.
Modular Certification of Low-Level Intermediate Representation Programs

Abstract:Modular certification of low-level intermediate representation (IR) programs is one of the key steps of proof-transforming compilation. The major challenges are the complexity of abstract control stacks and the lack of control flow information due to their flat nature.To tackle these challenges, we present in this paper a novel Hoare-style logic framework for modular certification of p-machine style bytecode as IR programs. This logic can fully support abstract control stacks and unstructured control flows for modular certification of IR programs involving while loops, procedure call/return, recursive procedures, and even nested procedures. It applies foundational proof-carrying code (FPCC) concepts to IR level. This system is expressive and fully mechanized. We prove its soundness and demonstrate its power by certifying the implementation of some IR programs in the Coq proof assistant. This work not only provides a solid theoretical foundation for reasoning about IR programs, but also makes an important advance toward building proof-transforming compilation environment in which certified IR code with proofs can be compiled to machine checkable proof-carrying low-level assembly code.

Abstract:A Boolean function is a function that produces a Boolean value output by logical calculation of Boolean inputs. It plays key roles in programing algorithms and design of circuits. Minimization of Boolean function is able to optimize the algorithms and circuits. Quine-McCluskey (QM) method is one of the most powerful techniques to simplify Boolean expressions. Compared to other techniques, QM method is more executable and can handle more variables. In addition, QM method is easier to be implemented in computer programs, which makes it an efficient technique. There are several versions of QM simulation codes online, whereas some of them appear to have limitations of variables numbers or lack the consideration of Dont-Care conditions. Here a QM simulation code based on C programing is introduced. Theoretically it is able to handle any number of variables and has taken the Dont-Care conditions into account.
miniCodeProps: a Minimal Benchmark for Proving Code Properties

Abstract:AI agents have shown initial promise in automating mathematical theorem proving in proof assistants such as Lean. The same proof assistants can be used to verify the correctness of code by pairing code with specifications and proofs that the specifications hold. Automating the writing of code, specifications, and proofs could lower the cost of verification, or, ambitiously, enable an AI agent to output safe, provably correct code. However, it remains unclear whether current neural theorem provers can automatically verify even relatively simple programs. We present miniCodeProps, a benchmark of 201 program specifications in the Lean proof assistant, aimed at the subproblem of automatically generating a proof for a provided program and specification. miniCodeProps contains specifications about simple, self-contained programs (e.g., lists, natural numbers, binary trees) with varied proof difficulty. Despite its simplicity, miniCodeProps is sufficient to break current LLM-based provers, with state-of-the-art methods showing promise on the easy properties in miniCodeProps, yet failing to prove nearly all of the medium and hard properties. We publicly release miniCodeProps as a benchmark for furthering automated theorem proving in the context of formally verified code.

Abstract:In this paper we reexamine the place and role of stable model semantics in logic programming and contrast it with a least Herbrand model approach to Horn programs. We demonstrate that inherent features of stable model semantics naturally lead to a logic programming system that offers an interesting alternative to more traditional logic programming styles of Horn logic programming, stratified logic programming and logic programming with well-founded semantics. The proposed approach is based on the interpretation of program clauses as constraints. In this setting, a program does not describe a single intended model, but a family of its stable models. These stable models encode solutions to the constraint satisfaction problem described by the program. Our approach imposes restrictions on the syntax of logic programs. In particular, function symbols are eliminated from the language. We argue that the resulting logic programming system is well-attuned to problems in the class NP, has a well-defined domain of applications, and an emerging methodology of programming. We point out that what makes the whole approach viable is recent progress in implementations of algorithms to compute stable models of propositional logic programs.
