Abstract:We quadratically enrich Mikhalkin's correspondence theorem. That is, we prove a correspondence between algebraic curves on a toric surface counted with Levine's quadratic enrichment of the Welschinger sign, and tropical curves counted with a quadratic enrichment of Mikhalkin's multiplicity for tropical curves.

Abstract:We define a quadratically enriched count of rational curves in a given divisor class passing through a collection of points on a del Pezzo surface $S$ of degree $\geq 3$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3.$ When $S$ is $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected, the count takes values in the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) of quadratic forms over $k$ and depends only on the divisor class and the fields of definition of the points. More generally, the count is a morphism from the sheaf of connected components of tuples of points on $S$ with given fields of definition to the Grothendieck-Witt sheaf. We also treat del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$ under certain conditions. The curve count defined in the present work recovers Gromov-Witten invariants when $k = \mathbb{C}$ and Welschinger invariants when $k = \mathbb{R}.$ To obtain an invariant curve count, we define a quadratically enriched degree for an algebraic map $f$ of $n$-dimensional smooth schemes over a field $k$ under appropriate hypotheses. For example, $f$ can be proper, generically finite and oriented over the complement of a subscheme of codimension $2.$ This degree is compatible with F. Morel's GW(k)-valued degree of an $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy class of maps between spheres. For $k \subseteq \mathbb{C}$, this produces an enrichment of the topological degree of a map between manifolds of the same dimension.

Quadratically Enriched Tropical Intersections

Abstract:Using tropical geometry one can translate problems in enumerative geometry to combinatorial problems. Thus tropical geometry is a powerful tool in enumerative geometry over the complex and real numbers. Results from $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory allow to enrich classical enumerative geometry questions and get answers over an arbitrary field. In the resulting area, $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumerative geometry, the answer to these questions lives in the Grothendieck-Witt ring of the base field $k$. In this paper, we use tropical methods in this enriched set up by showing Bézout's theorem and a generalization, namely the Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem, for tropical hypersurfaces enriched in $\operatorname{GW}(k)$.

Arithmetic Counts of Tropical Plane Curves and Their Properties

Abstract:Recently, the first and third author proved a correspondence theorem which recovers the Levine-Welschinger invariants of toric del Pezzo surfaces as a count of tropical curves weighted with arithmetic multiplicities. In this paper, we study properties of the arithmetic count of plane tropical curves satisfying point conditions. We prove that this count is independent of the configuration of point conditions. Moreover, a Caporaso-Harris formula for the arithmetic count of plane tropical curves is obtained by moving one point to the very left. Repeating this process until all point conditions are stretched, we obtain an enriched count of floor diagrams which coincides with the tropical count. Finally, we prove polynomiality properties for the arithmetic counts using floor diagrams.

Abstract:Quadratic residue patterns modulo a prime are studied since 19th century. In the first part we extend existing results on the number of consecutive $\ell$-tuples of quadratic residues, studying corresponding algebraic curves and their jacobians, which happen to be products of jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. In the second part we state the last unpublished result of Lydia Goncharova on squares such that their differences are also squares, reformulate it in terms of algebraic geometry of a K3 surface, and prove it. The core of this theorem is an unexpected relation between the number of points on the K3 surface and that on a CM elliptic curve.

Abstract:For quadratic curves over $F_p$, the number of solutions, which is governed by an analogue of the Mordell-Weil group, is expressed with the Legendre symbol of a coefficient of quadratic curves. Focusing on the number of solutions, a quadratic curve analogue of the modular form in the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture is proposed. This modular form yields the Gaussian sum and also possesses some modular transformation structure.

Abstract:Patchworking theorems serve as a basic element of the correspondence between tropical and algebraic curves, which is a core of the tropical enumerative geometry. We present a new version of a patchworking theorem which relates plane tropical curves with complex and real algebraic curves having prescribed multiple points. It can be used to compute Welschinger invariants of non-toric Del Pezzo surfaces.

Abstract:We define an enrichment of the logarithmic derivative of the zeta function of a variety over a finite field to a power series with coefficients in the Grothendieck--Witt group. We show that this enrichment is related to the topology of the real points of a lift. For cellular schemes over a field, we prove a rationality result for this enriched logarithmic derivative of the zeta function as an analogue of part of the Weil conjectures. We also compute several examples, including toric varieties, and show that the enrichment is a motivic measure.

On Motivic and Arithmetic Refinements of Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Abstract:In recent years, a version of enumerative geometry over arbitrary fields has been developed and studied by Kass-Wickelgren, Levine, and others, in which the counts obtained are not integers but quadratic forms. Aiming to understand the relation to other "refined invariants", and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory, we explain how to obtain a quadratic version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic invariants defined in the work of Kontsevich and Soibelman and pose some questions. We calculate these invariants in a few simple examples that provide standard tests for these questions, including degree zero invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ and higher-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants recently studied by Liu and Ruan. The comparison with known real and complex counts plays a central role throughout.

Abstract:We use recent duality results of Eisenbud--Ulrich to give tools to study quadratically enriched residual intersections when there is no excess bundle. We use this to prove a formula for the Witt-valued Euler number of an almost complete intersection. We give example computations of quadratically enriched excess and residual intersections.

Curve counting on the Enriques surface and the Klemm-Mariño formula

Abstract:We determine the Gromov-Witten invariants of the local Enriques surfaces for all genera and curve classes and prove the Klemm-Mariño formula. In particular, we show that the generating series of genus $1$ invariants of the Enriques surface is the Fourier expansion of a certain power of Borcherds automorphic form on the moduli space of Enriques surfaces. We also determine all Vafa-Witten invariants of the Enriques surface. The proof uses the correspondence between Gromov-Witten and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. On the Gromov-Witten side we prove the relative Gromov-Witten potentials of an elliptic Enriques surfaces are quasi-Jacobi forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. On the sheaf side, we relate the Pandharipande-Thomas invariants of the Enriques-Calabi-Yau threefold in fiber classes to the $2$-dimensional Donaldson-Thomas invariants by a version of Toda's formula for local K3 surfaces. Altogether, we obtain sufficient modular constraints to determine all invariants from basic geometric computations.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let $A(\ell,n,k)$ denote the number of $\ell$-tuples of commuting permutations of $n$ elements whose permutation action results in exactly $k$ orbits or connected components. We provide a new proof of an explicit formula for $A(\ell,n,k)$ which is essentially due to Bryan and Fulman, in their work on orbifold higher equivariant Euler characteristics. Our proof is self-contained, elementary, and relies on the construction of an explicit bijection, in order to perform the $\ell+1\rightarrow \ell$ reduction. We also investigate a conjecture by the first author, regarding the log-concavity of $A(\ell,n,k)$ with respect to $k$. The conjecture generalizes a previous one by Heim and Neuhauser related to the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula.

Secant varieties of curves, Ulrich bundles and the arithmetic writhe

Abstract:We establish a connection between the theory of Ulrich sheaves and $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. For instance, we prove that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of a morphism between projective varieties, that is relatively oriented by an Ulrich sheaf, is constant on the target even when it is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Further if an embedded projective variety is the support of a symmetric Ulrich sheaf of rank one, the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of all its linear projections can be read off in an explicit way from the free resolution of the Ulrich sheaf. Finally, we construct an Ulrich sheaf on the secant variety of a curve and use this to define an arithmetic version of Viro's encomplexed writhe for curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This can be considered to be an arithmetic analogue of a link invariant.

Abstract:We lift the affine Matsuki correspondence between real and symmetric loop group orbits in affine Grassmannians to an equivalence of derived categories of sheaves. In analogy with the finite-dimensional setting, our arguments depend upon the Morse theory of energy functions obtained from symmetrizations of coadjoint orbits. The additional fusion structures of the affine setting lead to further equivalences with Schubert constructible derived categories of sheaves on real affine Grassmannians.

Abstract:Using the theory of moduli of curves, we establish various slope inequalities for general fibered surfaces. More precisely, we introduce the notion of functorial divisors on Artin stacks and prove a theorem concerning their effectiveness. Furthermore, we consider the moduli stack of reduced and local complete intersection canonically polarized curves and prove that the closed substack parametrizing non-stable curves has no divisorial components. Applying the above theorems to some tautological divisors on various moduli stacks of curves, we obtain several slope (in)equalities, e.g., a generalization of Moriwaki's slope inequality, slope equalities of general fibered surfaces whose fibers satisfy the Morsification conjecture. As applications, we provide a positive answer to Reid's conjecture concerning algebraic Morsification of non-hyperelliptic fibrations of genus $3$ and a positive partial answer to the question posed by Lu and Tan regarding the Chern invariants of fiber germs.

Convolution monodromy groups and the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in tori

Abstract:The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09046">arXiv:2004.09046</a>), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.

Abstract:We compute Joyce's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.04694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.04694">arXiv:2111.04694</a>) enumerative invariants $[\mathcal{M}^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,d)}]_{\mathrm{inv}}$ for semistable rank $r$ degree $d$ coherent sheaves on a complex projective curve. These invariants are a generalization of the fundamental class of the moduli of semistable sheaves. We express the invariants as a regularized sum, which is a way to assign finite values to divergent series, and we obtain explicit expressions for the invariants. From these invariants, one can extract cohomology pairings on the moduli of semistable sheaves. When $r$ and $d$ are coprime, formulae for such pairings were found by Witten and proved by Jeffrey and Kirwan. Our results provide a new point of view on this classical problem, and can be seen as a generalization of this to the case when $r$ and $d$ are not coprime.

Towards refined curve counting on the Enriques surface II: Motivic refinements

Abstract:We study the motivic Pandharipande-Thomas invariants of the Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds in fiber curve classes by basic computations and analysis of a wallcrossing formula of Toda. Motivated by our results we conjecture a formula for the perverse Hodge numbers of the compactified Jacobian fibration of linar systems on Enriques surfaces in terms of its Betti numbers. This leads to an asymptotic for said Hodge numbers and raises questions about the behaviour of the extremal Hodge numbers.
