Abstract:We define a quadratically enriched count of rational curves in a given divisor class passing through a collection of points on a del Pezzo surface $S$ of degree $\geq 3$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3.$ When $S$ is $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected, the count takes values in the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) of quadratic forms over $k$ and depends only on the divisor class and the fields of definition of the points. More generally, the count is a morphism from the sheaf of connected components of tuples of points on $S$ with given fields of definition to the Grothendieck-Witt sheaf. We also treat del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$ under certain conditions. The curve count defined in the present work recovers Gromov-Witten invariants when $k = \mathbb{C}$ and Welschinger invariants when $k = \mathbb{R}.$ To obtain an invariant curve count, we define a quadratically enriched degree for an algebraic map $f$ of $n$-dimensional smooth schemes over a field $k$ under appropriate hypotheses. For example, $f$ can be proper, generically finite and oriented over the complement of a subscheme of codimension $2.$ This degree is compatible with F. Morel's GW(k)-valued degree of an $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy class of maps between spheres. For $k \subseteq \mathbb{C}$, this produces an enrichment of the topological degree of a map between manifolds of the same dimension.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **the problem of counting rational curves passing through a series of points in a given divisor class**, especially in the case of del Pezzo surfaces and the base field being a perfect field (with characteristic not 2 or 3). Specifically, the authors define a quadratically - enriched method for counting rational curves. This method is applicable not only to Gromov - Witten invariants over the complex field but also to Welschinger invariants over the real field. ### Detailed Explanation 1. **Background and Motivation** - In algebraic geometry, calculating the number of rational curves passing through given points is a classical problem. For example, over the complex field, the number of rational plane curves of degree \(d\) passing through \(3d - 1\) points in general position is fixed and can be calculated by Gromov - Witten theory. - However, over the real field, this number depends on the choice of points. Welschinger introduced a signed counting method, making this count an invariant. 2. **Main Problem** - The main objective of the paper is to generalize this counting method to more general fields, especially perfect fields (with characteristic not 2 or 3). The authors define a new counting method, called "quadratically - enriched counting", which takes values in the Grothendieck - Witt group \(GW(k)\) instead of the traditional integers. 3. **Specific Problem Description** - Given a del Pezzo surface \(S\) with degree \(\geq3\), and a set of points defined on different extension fields, the authors hope to calculate the number of rational curves passing through these points. - The counting of these curves depends not only on the position of the points but also on the extension fields where the points are located. Therefore, the authors define a mapping from the connected components of points to the Grothendieck - Witt group, thus obtaining an invariant. 4. **Innovation Points** - The authors use tools in A1 - homotopy theory to re - define the degree of the mapping so that this degree can take values in the Grothendieck - Witt group. This not only covers the traditional Gromov - Witten invariants and Welschinger invariants but can also be applied to a wider range of field and surface types. 5. **Applications and Significance** - This new counting method provides a more powerful tool for studying the properties of rational curves in a wider range of mathematical structures. - It is applicable not only to the complex field and the real field but also to finite fields and other perfect fields, thus expanding the application range of traditional counting methods. In summary, this paper aims to solve the problem of counting rational curves passing through given points on a wider range of fields by introducing a quadratically - enriched method for counting rational curves and connect it with the existing Gromov - Witten and Welschinger invariants.
