Abstract:We describe a rigidity phenomenon exhibited by the second Chern Ricci curvature of a Hermitian metric on a compact complex manifold. This yields a characterisation of second Chern Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on several types of manifolds as well as a range of non-existence results for such metrics.

Abstract:On Hermitian manifolds, the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. By refining the Bochner formulas for any Hermitian complex vector bundle (and Riemannian real vector bundle) with an arbitrary metric connection over a compact Hermitian manifold, we can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and complex vector bundles by the second Ricci curvature tensors. We will also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the ( 1 , 1 ) (1,1) -component of the curvature 2 2 -form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds S 2 n − 1 × S 1 \mathbb {S}^{2n-1}\times \mathbb {S}^1 . We also construct a smooth family of Gauduchon metrics on a compact Hermitian manifold such that the metrics are in the same first Aeppli-Chern class, and their first Chern-Ricci curvatures are the same and non-negative, but their Riemannian scalar curvatures are constant and vary smoothly between negative infinity and a positive number. In particular, it shows that Hermitian manifolds with non-negative first Chern class can admit Hermitian metrics with strictly negative Riemannian scalar curvature.
Positivity and vanishing theorems in complex and algebraic geometry

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:We show that Hermitian metrics with vanishing holomorphic curvature on compact complex manifolds with pseudoeffective canonical bundle are conformally balanced. Pluriclosed metrics with vanishing holomorphic curvature on compact Kähler manifolds are shown to be Kähler and hence, are completely classified. We prove that Hermitian metrics with vanishing real bisectional curvature on complex manifolds in the Fujiki class C are Kähler and thus fall under the same classification. Finally, we formalize the notion of `altered' curvatures, which force distinguished metric structures when mandated to coincide with their `standard' counterparts.

Abstract:We present some formulae related to the Chern-Ricci curvatures and scalar curvatures of special Hermitian metrics. We prove that a compact locally conformal Kähler manifold with constant nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature is Kähler. We also give examples of complete non-Kähler metrics with pointwise negative constant but not globally constant holomorphic sectional curvature, and complete non-Kähler metric with zero holomorphic sectional curvature and nonvanishing curvature tensor.

Abstract:We examine the class of compact Hermitian manifolds with constant holomorphic sectional curvature. Such manifolds are conjectured to be Kähler (hence a complex space form) when the constant is non-zero and Chern flat (hence a quotient of a complex Lie group) when the constant is zero. The conjecture is known in complex dimension two but open in higher dimensions. In this paper, we establish a partial solution in complex dimension three by proving that any compact Hermitian threefold with zero real bisectional curvature must be Chern flat. Real bisectional curvature is a curvature notion introduced by Xiaokui Yang and the second named author in 2019, generalizing holomorphic sectional curvature. It is equivalent to the latter in the Kähler case and is slightly stronger in general.

Abstract:We observe that, for a Bismut Einstein metric, the (2,0)-part of Bismut Ricci form is an eigenvector of the Chern Laplacian. With the help of this observation, we prove that a Bismut Einstein metric with non-zero Einstein constant is Kähler Einstein. Additionally, for Bismut Einstein metrics with zero Einstein constant, we prove that they are actually Bismut Ricci flat.

Abstract:In this article, we examine the behavior of the Riemannian and Hermitian curvature tensors of a Hermitian metric, when one of the curvature tensors obeys all the symmetry conditions of the curvature tensor of a K\"ahler metric. We will call such metrics G-K\"ahler-like or K\"ahler-like, for lack of better terminologies. Such metrics are always balanced when the manifold is compact, so in a way they are more special than balanced metrics, which drew a lot of attention in the study of non-K\"ahler Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular we derive various formulas on the difference between the Riemannian and Hermitian curvature tensors in terms of the torsion of the Hermitian connection. We believe that these formulas could lead to further applications in the study of Hermitian geometry with curvature assumptions.

Abstract:Let (M1,g) and (M2,h) be two Hermitian manifolds. The twisted product Hermitian manifold (M1×M2f,G) is the product manifold M1×M2 endowed with the Hermitian metric G=g+f2h, where f is a positive smooth function on M1×M2. In this paper, the Chern curvature, Chern Ricci curvature, Chern Ricci scalar curvature and holomorphic sectional curvature of the twisted product Hermitian manifold are derived. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the compact twisted product Hermitian manifold to have constant holomorphic sectional curvature are obtained. Under the condition that the logarithm of the twisted function is pluriharmonic, it is proved that the twisted product Hermitian manifold is Chern flat or Chern Ricci-flat, if and only if M1,g and M2,h are Chern flat or Chern Ricci-flat, respectively.

Abstract:On a Hermitian manifold, the Chern connection can induce a metric connection on the background Riemannian manifold. We call the sectional curvature of the metric connection induced by the Chern connection the Chern sectional curvature of this Hermitian manifold. First, we derive expression of the Chern sectional curvature in local complex coordinates. As an application, we find that a Hermitian metric is Kähler if the Riemann sectional curvature and the Chern sectional curvature coincide. As subsequent results, Ricci curvature and scalar curvature of the metric connection induced by the Chern connection are obtained.

Abstract:We prove that a compact Hermitian manifold with semi-positive but not identically zero holomorphic sectional curvature has Kodaira dimension $-\infty$. As applications, we show that Kodaira surfaces and hyperelliptic surfaces can not admit Hermitian metrics with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature although they have nef tangent bundles.

Abstract:In our previous work, we introduced a special type of Hermitian metrics called {\em torsion-critical,} which are non-Kähler critical points of the $L^2$-norm of Chern torsion over the space of all Hermitian metrics with unit volume on a compact complex manifold. In this short note, we restrict our attention to the class of compact Chern flat manifolds, which are compact quotients of complex Lie groups equipped with compatible left-invariant metrics. Our main result states that, if a Chern flat metric is torsion-critical, then the complex Lie group must be semi-simple, and conversely, any semi-simple complex Lie group admits a compatible left-invariant metric that is torsion-critical.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider orthogonal Ricci curvature $Ric^{\perp }$ for Kähler manifolds, which is a curvature condition closely related to Ricci curvature and holomorphic sectional curvature. We prove comparison theorems and a vanishing theorem related to these curvature conditions, and construct various examples to illustrate subtle relationship among them. As a consequence of the vanishing theorem, we show that any compact Kähler manifold with positive orthogonal Ricci curvature must be projective. This result complements a recent result of Yang (RC-positivity, rational connectedness, and Yau’s conjecture. arXiv:1708.06713) on the projectivity under the positivity of holomorphic sectional curvature. The simply-connectedness is shown when the complex dimension is smaller than five. Further study of compact Kähler manifolds with $Ric^{\perp }>0$ is carried in Ni et al. (Manifolds with positive orthogonal Ricci curvature. arXiv:1806.10233).

Abstract:We prove two results on geometric consequences of the representation of restricted holonomy group of a Hermitian connection. The first result concerns when such a Hermitian manifold is Kähler in terms of the torsion and the irreducibility of the holonomy action. As a consequence we obtain a criterion of when a Hermitian manifold (and connection) is a generalized Calabi-Yau (in the sense that the Chern Ricci vanishes or equivalently that the restricted holonomy is inside $\mathsf{SU}(m)$). The second result concerns when a compact Kähler manifold with a generic restricted holonomy group is projective.

Abstract:We prove local Calabi and higher order estimates for solutions to the continuity equation introduced by La Nave-Tian and extended to Hermitian metrics by Sherman-Weinkove. We apply the estimates to show that on a compact complex manifold the Chern scalar curvature of a solution must blow up at a finite-time singularity. Additionally, starting from certain classes of initial data on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds we prove Gromov-Hausdorff and smooth convergence of the metric to a particular non-negative $(1,1)$-form as $t\to\infty$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold X admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if K-X (resp., K-X(-1)) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold X with complex dimension >= 2, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Szekelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.
