Abstract:The goal of this annotated bibliography is to record every publication on the topic of comparative prime number theory together with a summary of its results. We use a unified system of notation for the quantities being studied and for the hypotheses under which results are obtained. We encourage feedback on this manuscript (see the end of Section~1 for details).
Number Theory
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is to organize and document all publications in the field of comparative prime number theory and to summarize the results of each piece of literature. Specifically, the goals of the paper include: 1. **Recording all publications**: Collecting all research results on comparative prime number theory from 170 years ago to the present. 2. **Unified notation system**: Proposing a unified notation system to represent commonly used functions and quantities in the research, as well as hypotheses related to the zeros of L-functions. 3. **Summarizing research results**: Providing a concise summary for each piece of literature, introducing its main results and methods. 4. **Encouraging feedback**: Inviting readers to provide feedback to improve the content in future updates of the document. Comparative prime number theory mainly studies various quantities in number theory, such as prime counting functions with specific properties, and comparisons between these functions. This includes but is not limited to "prime number races," which examine inequalities between prime counting functions in arithmetic progressions modulo congruence. By studying the differences and sign changes of these functions, the research can further extend to other number-theoretic quantities. In summary, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic repository for research in comparative prime number theory, facilitating researchers to consult and reference.
