Abstract:Extensions of Stone-type dualities have a long history in algebraic logic and have also been instrumental for proving results in algebraic language theory. We show how to extend abstract categorical dualities via monoidal adjunctions, subsuming various incarnations of classical extended Stone and Priestley duality as special cases. Guided by these categorical foundations, we investigate residuation algebras, which are algebraic models of language derivatives, and show the subcategory of derivation algebras to be dually equivalent to the category of profinite ordered monoids, restricting to a duality between boolean residuation algebras and profinite monoids. We further refine this duality to capture relational morphisms of profinite ordered monoids, which dualize to natural morphisms of residuation algebras. As a special case of the discrete version of the duality between monoids and complete residuation algebras, we obtain a novel concrete description for the dual of the category of all small categories and functors.

Abstract:Stone duality generalizes to an equivalence between the categories $\mathsf{Stone}^{\mathsf{R}}$ of Stone spaces and closed relations and $\mathsf{BA}^\mathsf{S}$ of boolean algebras and subordination relations. Splitting equivalences in $\mathsf{Stone}^{\mathsf{R}}$ yields a category that is equivalent to the category $\mathsf{KHaus}^\mathsf{R}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces and closed relations. Similarly, splitting equivalences in $\mathsf{BA}^\mathsf{S}$ yields a category that is equivalent to the category $\mathsf{DeV^S}$ of de Vries algebras and compatible subordination relations. Applying the machinery of allegories then yields that $\mathsf{KHaus}^\mathsf{R}$ is equivalent to $\mathsf{DeV^S}$, thus resolving a problem recently raised in the literature. The equivalence between $\mathsf{KHaus}^\mathsf{R}$ and $\mathsf{DeV^S}$ further restricts to an equivalence between the category ${\mathsf{KHaus}}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces and continuous functions and the wide subcategory $\mathsf{DeV^F}$ of $\mathsf{DeV^S}$ whose morphisms satisfy additional conditions.This yields an alternative to de Vries duality. One advantage of this approach is that composition of morphisms is usual relation composition.

Abstract:The standard topological representation of a Boolean algebra via the clopen sets of a Stone space requires a nonconstructive choice principle, equivalent to the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem. In this paper, we describe a choice-free topological representation of Boolean algebras. This representation uses a subclass of the spectral spaces that Stone used in his representation of distributive lattices via compact open sets. It also takes advantage of Tarski's observation that the regular open sets of any topological space form a Boolean algebra. We prove without choice principles that any Boolean algebra arises from a special spectral space X via the compact regular open sets of X; these sets may also be described as those that are both compact open in X and regular open in the upset topology of the specialization order of X, allowing one to apply to an arbitrary Boolean algebra simple reasoning about regular opens of a separative poset. Our representation is therefore a mix of Stone and Tarski, with the two connected by Vietoris: the relevant spectral spaces also arise as the hyperspace of nonempty closed sets of a Stone space endowed with the upper Vietoris topology. In addition to representation, we establish a choice-free dual equivalence between the category of Boolean algebras with Boolean homomorphisms and a subcategory of the category of spectral spaces with spectral maps. We show how this duality can be used to prove some basic facts about Boolean algebras.

Abstract:Our main result is that any topological algebra based on a Boolean space is the extended Stone dual space of a certain associated Boolean algebra with additional operations. A particular case of this result is that the profinite completion of any abstract algebra is the extended Stone dual space of the Boolean algebra of recognizable subsets of the abstract algebra endowed with certain residuation operations. These results identify a connection between topological algebra as applied in algebra and Stone duality as applied in logic, and show that the notion of recognition originating in computer science is intrinsic to profinite completion in mathematics in general. This connection underlies a number of recent results in automata theory including a generalization of Eilenberg-Reiterman theory for regular languages and a new notion of compact recognition applying beyond the setting of regular languages. The purpose of this paper is to give the underlying duality theoretic result in its general form. Further we illustrate the power of the result by providing a few applications in topological algebra and language theory. In particular, we give a simple proof of the fact that any topological algebra quotient of a profinite algebra which is again based on a Boolean space is in fact a profinite algebra and we derive the conditions dual to the ones of the original Eilenberg theorem in a fully modular manner. We cast our results in the setting of extended Priestley duality for distributive lattices with additional operations as some classes of languages of interest in automata fail to be closed under complementation.

Abstract:Moisil in 1941, while constructing the algebraic models of n-valued {\L}ukasiewicz logic defined the set $B^{[n]}$,where $B$ is a Boolean algebra and `n' being a natural number. Further it was proved by Moisil himself the representations of n-valued {\L}ukasiewicz Moisil algebra in terms of $B^{[n]}$. In this article, structural representation results for Stone, dual Stone and double Stone algebras are proved similar to Moisil's work by showing that elements of these algebras can be looked upon as monotone ordered tuple of sets. 3-valued semantics of logic for Stone algebra, dual Stone algebras and 4-valued semantics of logic for double Stone algebras are proposed and established soundness and completeness results.

Abstract:Recently in \cite{FM, FlMo}, the language of MV-algebras was extended by adding a unary operation, an internal operator, called also a state-operator. In \cite{DD1}, a stronger version of state MV-algebras, called state-morphism MV-algebras was given. In this paper, we present Stone Duality Theorems for (i) the category of Boolean algebras with a fixed state-operator and the category of compact Hausdorff topological spaces with a fixed idempotent continuous function, and for (ii) the category of weakly divisible $\sigma$-complete state-morphism MV-algebras and the category of Bauer simplices whose set of extreme points is basically disconnected and with a fixed idempotent continuous function.

Overlap Algebras: a Constructive Look at Complete Boolean Algebras

Abstract:The notion of a complete Boolean algebra, although completely legitimate in constructive mathematics, fails to capture some natural structures such as the lattice of subsets of a given set. Sambin's notion of an overlap algebra, although classically equivalent to that of a complete Boolean algebra, has powersets and other natural structures as instances. In this paper we study the category of overlap algebras as an extension of the category of sets and relations, and we establish some basic facts about mono-epi-isomorphisms and (co)limits; here a morphism is a symmetrizable function (with classical logic this is just a function which preserves joins). Then we specialize to the case of morphisms which preserve also finite meets: classically, this is the usual category of complete Boolean algebras. Finally, we connect overlap algebras with locales, and their morphisms with open maps between locales, thus obtaining constructive versions of some results about Boolean locales.

Non-commutative Stone duality: inverse semigroups, topological groupoids and C*-algebras

Abstract:We study a non-commutative generalization of Stone duality that connects a class of inverse semigroups, called Boolean inverse $\wedge$-semigroups, with a class of topological groupoids, called Hausdorff Boolean groupoids. Much of the paper is given over to showing that Boolean inverse $\wedge$-semigroups arise as completions of inverse semigroups we call pre-Boolean. An inverse $\wedge$-semigroup is pre-Boolean if and only if every tight filter is an ultrafilter, where the definition of a tight filter is obtained by combining work of both Exel and Lenz. A simple necessary condition for a semigroup to be pre-Boolean is derived and a variety of examples of inverse semigroups are shown to satisfy it. Thus the polycyclic inverse monoids, and certain Rees matrix semigroups over the polycyclics, are pre-Boolean and it is proved that the groups of units of their completions are precisely the Thompson-Higman groups $G_{n,r}$. The inverse semigroups arising from suitable directed graphs are also pre-Boolean and the topological groupoids arising from these graph inverse semigroups under our non-commutative Stone duality are the groupoids that arise from the Cuntz-Krieger $C^{\ast}$-algebras.

Furthermore, the symmetric difference is shown to be algebraically analogous to the modular difference of two numbers. Finally, a new method to prove equivalent relations in a Boolean algebra is also given.

Abstract:Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.

Abstract:In this paper we explain the relationship between Frobenius objects in monoidal categories and adjunctions in 2-categories. In particular, we show that every Frobenius object in a monoidal category M arises from an ambijunction (simultaneous left and right adjoints) in some 2-category D into which M fully and faithfully embeds. Since a 2D topological quantum field theory is equivalent to a commutative Frobenius algebra, this result also shows that every 2D TQFT is obtained from an ambijunction in some 2-category. Our theorem is proved by extending the theory of adjoint monads to the context of an arbitrary 2-category and utilizing the free completion under Eilenberg-Moore objects. We then categorify this theorem by replacing the monoidal category M with a semistrict monoidal 2-category M, and replacing the 2-category D into which it embeds by a semistrict 3-category. To state this more powerful result, we must first define the notion of a `Frobenius pseudomonoid', which categorifies that of a Frobenius object. We then define the notion of a `pseudo ambijunction', categorifying that of an ambijunction. In each case, the idea is that all the usual axioms now hold only up to coherent isomorphism. Finally, we show that every Frobenius pseudomonoid in a semistrict monoidal 2-category arises from a pseudo ambijunction in some semistrict 3-category.

Independent families in Boolean algebras with some separation properties

Abstract:We prove that any Boolean algebra with the subsequential completeness property contains an independent family of size continuum. This improves a result of Argyros from the 80ties which asserted the existence of an uncountable independent family. In fact we prove it for a bigger class of Boolean algebras satisfying much weaker properties. It follows that the Stone spaces of all such Boolean algebras contains a copy of the Cech-Stone compactification of the integers and the Banach space of contnuous functions on them has $l_\infty$ as a quotient. Connections with the Grothendieck property in Banach spaces are discussed.

A Stone-type duality for semilattices with adjunctions

Abstract:This paper focuses on semilattices with adjunctions (SLatas), which are semilattices with a greatest element enriched with a pair of adjoint maps. We develop a spectral-style duality for SLatas, building on prior topological dualities for monotone semilattices. As an application of this duality, we characterize SLata congruences through an adaptation of lower-Vietoris-type families. Furthermore, we investigate tense operators on semilattices with a greatest element, deriving a duality for this case by extending the results obtained for SLatas.

Abstract:We introduce the Boolean algebra of d-semialgebraic (more generally, d-definable) sets and prove that its Stone space is naturally isomorphic to the Ellis enveloping semigroup of the Stone space of the Boolean algebra of semialgebraic (definable) sets. For definably connected o-minimal groups, we prove that this family agrees with the one of externally definable sets in the one-dimensional case. Nonetheless, we prove that in general these two families differ, even in the semialgebraic case over the real algebraic numbers. On the other hand, in the semialgebraic case we characterise real semialgrebraic functions representing Boolean combinations of d-semialgebraic sets.

Abstract:An algebraic structure with two constants and one ternary operation, which is not completely commutative, is put forward to accommodate ternary Boolean algebras. When the ternary operation is interpreted as Church's conditioned disjunction, Boolean algebras are characterized as a subvariety. Different interpretations for the ternary operation lead to distinct subvarieties. Rings and near-rings of characteristic 2 are used to illustrate the procedure.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the categories of braided objects, algebras and bialgebras in a given monoidal category, some pairs of adjoint functors between them and their relations. In particular, we construct a braided primitive functor and its left adjoint, the braided tensor bialgebra functor, from the category of braided objects to the one of braided bialgebras. The latter is obtained by a specific elaborated construction introducing a braided tensor algebra functor as a left adjoint of the forgetful functor from the category of braided algebras to the one of braided objects. The behavior of these functors in the case when the base category is braided is also considered.

Abstract:In this note we give an axiomatization of Boolean algebras based on weakly dicomplemented lattices: an algebra $(L,\wedge,\vee,\tu)$ of type $(2,2,1)$ is a Boolean algebra iff $(L,\wedge,\vee)$ is a non empty lattice and $(x\wedge y)\vee(x\wedge y\tu)=(x\vee y)\wedge(x\vee y\tu)$ for all $x,y\in L$. This provides a unique equation to encode distributivity and complementation on lattices.

Abstract:Previous work has axiomatised the cardinality operation in relation algebras, which counts the number of edges of an unweighted graph. We generalise the cardinality axioms to Stone relation algebras, which model weighted graphs, and study the relationships between various axioms for cardinality. This results in simpler cardinality axioms also for relation algebras. We give sufficient conditions for the representability of Stone relation algebras and for Stone relation algebras to be relation algebras.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a skeletally small additive category. Using the canonical equivalence between two different presentations of the free abelian category over $\mathcal{X}$, we give a new and simple characterization of definable subcategories of $\rm Mod\text{-}\mathcal{X}$, and in particular definable subcategories of modules over rings. In the end, we give a conceptual proof of Auslander-Gruson-Jensen duality, which makes the duality between definable subcategories of left and right module more transparent.
